Elizabeth J. Chapman
Elizabeth J. Chapman, 83, of 78 Linwood Ave., died at 9:15 A.M. Sunday (March 19, 2006) in Heritage Green Health Care Center.
She was born Dec. 2, 1922 in Jamestown, the daughter of Arthur and Edith Nelson Anderson.
Mrs. Chapman was a 1941 graduate of Jamestown High School, and was a member of the Jamestown Community Chapel.
In earlier years she had been employed as a sales clerk at the former Bigelow’s Department Store.
Surviving are three sons: Wayne W. Chapman of Bridgewater, Mass., Craig A. Chapman of Jamestown, and Kurt A. Chapman of Amherst, N.Y; two grandchildren: James and Tiffany; a great grandson, Damian; three nieces: Kimberly Larson of Lakewood, Valerie Peterson of Seagrove Beach, Fla., and Kori Colangelo of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a nephew, George Anderson of Portland, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur H. Chapman, whom she married March 23, 1947, and who died Dec. 20, 2004; a son, Bruce R. Chapman, who died May 26, 1993; and by a brother with whom she was very close, Raymond Anderson, who died in 2001.
The funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. Pastor Rick Huber, mission director of Busti Federated Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service Sunday in the funeral home.

Audrey D. Leake
Audrey D. Leake, 79, of 92 Pershing Ave., formerly of California, Nevada, and Florida, died at 3:29 A.M. Saturday (March 25, 2006) in WCA Hospital.
She was born April 21, 1926 in Ashville, the daughter of William and Laroka Drake Butts. She was a 1944 graduate of the former Lakewood High School.
Mrs. Leake and her late husband completed many automobile trips throughout the country visiting national parks. She loved camping and all outdoor activities, and especially enjoyed spending time in Allegany State Park.
Surviving are two daughters: Polly J. Leake and Karen D. Morgan, both of Jamestown; a son, James D. Leake, Jr. of Hamilton Square, N.J.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Leake, whom she married Jan. 1, 1946 in Jamestown, and who died Oct. 31, 2001; and by a daughter, Penny Leake, who died Feb. 18, 2002.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation will not be observed. Email condolences may be sent by visiting the website www.presentsixbeyfuneral.com.

Millred A. "Millie" Tartaglia
Mildred A. “Millie” Tartaglia, 84, of the Frewsburg Rest Home, formerly of Panama and Riverhead, N.Y., died at 10:45 A.M. Tuesday (March 28, 2006) in WCA Hospital after a brief illness.
An area resident the past nine years, she was born March 6, 1922 in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of the late Gaetano Savio and Ella Lothrop Couchie.
She was a U.S. Army Women’s Army Corps (WACS) veteran of World War II, serving from 1943 to 1945 as a skilled airplane mechanic in Tucson, Ariz. and Amarillo, Tex.
She was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church, and was a member of Samuel Derby Post 556 American Legion of Frewsburg, and the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Riverheard, N.Y.
Millie enjoyed reading, drawing, and spending time with family and friends. She participated in many activities including bowling and bingo at the Frewsburg Rest Home, and had a passion for making people laugh. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Surviving are three daughters: Ellen Quinlan of Gaithersburg, Md., Gloria Swiatocha of Riverhead, N.Y., and Sandra Tartaglia of Ohio; a son, Robert Tartaglia of Brookhaven, N.Y.; five grandchildren: Michael Quinlan, Jr. of Washington, Michelle Whitman of Panama, Anthony Tartaglia of Ohio, Danielle Swiatocha of N.Y., and Melissa Swiatocha of Kentucky; and three great grandsons: Steven Whitman of Panama, and Jake and Gabe Tartaglia of Ohio.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Salvatore A. Tartaglia, whom she married Jan. 30, 1943, and who died April 14, 1966; and by a brother, Frederick Voit.
The funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. The Rev. Msgr. Antoine Attea, pastor of St. James Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday and for one hour prior to the funeral service Saturday in the funeral home. Email condolences may be sent by visiting the website www.presentsixbeyfuneral.com.

Agda L. Ball
Agda L. Ball, 90, formerly of 122 Ivy St., died at 6:35 A.M. Wednesday (April 5, 2006) in the Lutheran Retirement Home.
She was born Nov. 18, 1915 in Freehold Twp., Pa., the daughter of Emil and Alice Miles Lind.
A 1934 graduate of Jamestown High School, she had formerly been employed as a food service worker by the Jamestown Public School District.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church and had been a member of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran CHurch of America. She was also a former member of the Chautauqua County Women's Republican Club.
She enjoyed knitting and sewing, and had made many quilts and sweaters for Lutheran World Relief.
Surviving are two daughters: Marie A. Hill of Jamestown, and Sylvia L. Will of Depew; three grandchildren: Kelly M. Hill and Daniel N. Hill, Jr., both of Jamestown; and Bonnie A. Zdrojewski of Gand Island, N.Y.; and four great grandchildren: Derek T. Hill, Taylor A. Hill, and Robert N. Henke, all of Jamestown, and Brook Lyn Zdrojewski of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl A. Ball, who died Nov. 26, 1972; three sisters: Nettie Lind, Mildred Power, and Jessie Hedstrand; and by three brothers: Walter, Paul, and Vandel Lind.
Rev. Daniel Rumfelt, Lutheran Retirement Home chaplain, will officiate at the service. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, 120 Chandler St., Jamestown, N.Y. 14701; or to Hospice Chautauqua County, 4840 West Lake Rd., Mayville, N.Y. 14757

Robert J. Hammond
Robert J. Hammond, 73, of 3938 Salisbury Rd., died at 7:00 A.M. Monday (June 5, 2006) in WCA Hospital.
He was born Dec. 1, 1932 in Jamestown, the son of Harry A. and Eva Seekins Hammond.
For the past 33 years he had been the owner and operator of Hammond Greenhouse on the Salisbury Road. In earlier years he had worked for the Nordine Greenhouse in Mayville, with his father at Hammond & Son Blacktopping in Bemus Point, and for the Village of Bemus Point.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting fishing and boating. He also loved all growing things, including flowers, trees, and shrubs.
Surviving are his wife, the former Carol Foster, whom he married Jan. 12, 1963 in the Falconer First United Methodist Church; Three sons: David J. Hammond and his wife Dawn of Lakewood, John A. Hammond of Jamestown, and Mark L. Hammond of Fredonia; and a granddaughter, Leanne M. Aten of Lakewood.
The funeral will be at 8:00 P.M. Wednesday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. The Rev. Susan Anslow Williams of St. Lukes Episcopal Church will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until the time of the 8:00 P.M. funeral service Wednesday in the funeral home. Email condolences may be sent by visiting the website www.presentsixbeyfuneral.com

Ross T. Butler
Ross T. Butler, 89, of Covenant Manor, died Thursday (Apr. 27, 2006) om WCA Hospital.
He was born Dec.13, 1916 in Jamestown, a son of Jay A. and Naomi Wiggers Butler.
Mr. Butler spent the majority of his professional like in the family real estate business in Lakewood, which was started by his father in 1893. He was a past president of the Jamestown Board of Realtors, and chaired the Town of Busti Board of Assessors. A graduate of Lakewood High School, he continued his professional education throughout his career. This included course work sponsored by the Society of Real Estate Appraisers, the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, and advanced appraisal study at Cornell University. He also managed the former Arrowley Manor Apartments. Mr. Butler was active in community service, having served as president of the Lakewood Kiwanis Club, and was a past board member and life member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club.
A devoutly spititual man, Mr. Butler was a dedicated member of the Christian Science Church in Jamestown. He always has a love for activity on Chautauqua Lake, where he enjoyed gatherings at family homes in Lakewood, and later in Greenhurst.
Survivors: Wife, the former Priscilla (Sally) Camp; daughter: Judith Carrithers; sons: Craig and Douglas Butler; 4 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; devoted friends, especially Allen (Jack) Smith.
Preceded in death by two brothers: John and Frederick Butler
The family is indebted to Vicky Krug, his gentle and loving caregiver over the past four years. She and his children were at his bedside in his final hours.

Barbara L. Aiken
BEMUS POINT – Barbara L. Aiken, 76, of 4020 N. Oriental Ave., died at 5:20 P.M. Saturday (June 17, 2006) in WCA Hospital.
She was born March 4, 1930 in Bemus Point, the daughter of E. Ward and Elizabeth Davidson Lamphear.
Mrs. Aiken was a 1948 graduate of the former Bemus Point High School. Prior to retiring, she was employed as a cafeteria worker by the Bemus Point Central School District. She had also worked for many years at the Casino in Bemus Point, in both the snack bar and at the former upstairs bowling lanes.
She was a member of the Bemus Point United Methodist Church. She was also an active member of “The Club”, a group of friends who have met regularly for over 60 years. She had conducted the youth bowling league at the Casino Lanes, and had served as an election inspector for many years.
An excellent cook who enjoyed preparing food for family functions, she also enjoyed cross stitching, cross word puzzles, ceramics, and crafts of all kinds.
Surviving are her husband, Frederick W. Aiken, whom she married Sept. 25, 1949 in the Bemus Point United Methodist Church; two sons: Daniel B. Aiken and his wife Kay of Newburgh, Ind., and Donald J. Aiken and his wife Bonnie of Niobe; a daughter, Rebecca L. Armeli and her husband Carl of Celoron; seven grandchildren: Stacy Laughton and Christopher Aiken, both of Newburgh, Ind., Cole and Brandon Armeli, both of Celoron, Faith Little of Wilmington, N.C., and James and Jennifer Aiken, both of Niobe; and four great grandchildren: McKenna Andreas and Bresden Laughton, both of Newburgh, Ind., and Wyatt and Sierra Aiken, both of Niobe.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Lamphear.
The funeral will be at 12:00 Noon Thursday in Bemus Point United Methodist Church. The Rev. Daniel G. McBride, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the funeral service at noon Thursday in the church. Email condolences may be sent by visiting the website www.presentsixbeyfuneral.com.

Eugene F. Sorensen
Eugene F. Sorensen, 62, of 35 E. Livingston Ave., Celoron, died at 6:15 P.M. Saturday (June 17, 2006) as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Kennedy.
He was born Nov. 20, 1943 in Jamestown, the son of Harry and Waive Saxton Sorensen.
A graduate of Falconer High School, he had served in the U.S. Air Force as a fuel specialist with the 48th Fighter Wing in England.
He had been employed as a driver with Falcon Transport since 1992, and earlier had been a foreman at Jamestown Metal Products.
He attended the Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club and Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion.
He enjoyed roller skating with his wife at Evans Skateland.
Surviving are his wife, the former Geraldine Rosendahl (Brezee), whom he married Dec. 31, 2003; a son, Reid A. Sorensen and his wife Joanna of Lakewood; two grandchildren: Stephanie K. and Dylan T. Sorensen, both of Lakewood; a stepson, H. Todd Rosendahl of Warren; a stepdaughter, Leeanna J. Dowd of Sugar Grove; four step grandchildren: Peter Morrison, Alex Giordon, and Dakota and Summer Rosendahl; a brother, Walter Sorensen of Lakewood; and two sisters: Joyce Lusk of Jamestown, and Joanne Farr of Falconer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonita Brown Sorensen in 2000, and by a daughter, Kim Sorensen in 1975.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 1 in Calvary Baptist Church, 200 Fairmount Ave., Jamestown. Pastor Ray Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery

Viola I. DeMeyere
GLENDALE, Ariz – Viola I. Meek DeMeyere, 88, formerly of Sherman and Ashville, died Oct. 16, 2005 in Glendale.
She was born Oct. 21, 1916 in Salamanca, the daughter of John and Mary Stoltz Meek.
She was a former member of Our Lady of the Snows Roman Catholic Church in Panama, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.
She is survived by two sons: Gary (Rose) DeMeyere of Jamestown, and Jim (Dianne) DeMeyere of Glendale, Ariz.; three daughters: Ann (Dick) Damon of Niobe, Sally (Jim) Brochetti of Haverhill, Mass., and Dianne (Tom) Harrington of Monroe, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Remington of Westfield.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert “Dutch” DeMeyere, whom she married Sept. 3, 1938 in Bradford, Pa., and who died in February, 1995; two infant sons; two sisters: Margaret Remington and Eva O’Brien; and three brothers: Henry, Robert, and Joseph Meek.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Saturday in Our Lady of the Snows Roman Catholic Church in Panama. Visitation will not be observed.
