Daniel Lee Dzybon

Daniel Lee Dzybon, 57 formerly of East Corning, NY, died Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at the Homestead following an extended illness.
He was born May 14, 1948 in Corning, NY, the son of the late John and Arline Bliss Dzybon. A lifetime resident of Corning and graduate of Corning/Painted Post East High School (Class of 1966).
Daniel was an employee of Dalrymple Gravel and Contracting Co, Inc. with 22 years service with the company.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and bowler. In 1981 his trophy buck (which scored 147.6) was entered in the New York State Big Buck Club. Dan was a member of the Corning Lodge of Elks #1071.
He leaves behind Claudette Roy Dzybon and their children; Donna (Michael) Marrone of Elmira, NY, Deanna Dzybon of Winston Salem, NC and Michael (Gina) Dzybon of Mocksville, NC. Four grandsons; Ryan and Jacob Marrone and Chase and Jonathan Dzybon. His sister, Deborah (James) Rolls of Elmira, NY. Also an uncle, aunts and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father in 1981, his mother in 2000, and his sister; Diane Bird in 1999.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home Chapel, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY, Thursday, June 16, 2005 from 5-8pm. Corning Elks Lodge of Sorrow will be held at 7:45pm.The family invites friends to join them immediately following (8pm)for a celebration of Daniel’s life at the Elk’s Club, 148 Walnut Street, Corning, NY. Burial Service and Interment will be held at Hope Cemetery, Friday, June 17, 2005 at 10:30am. Rev.Fr. Stephen Loposky officiating.
Those wishing may direct memorials in Daniel’s name to the AIM Independent Living Center, 271 East First St, Corning, NY 14830, where the family received support and assistance regarding brain injury or to The Homestead, 418 N. Main Street, Penn Yan, NY 14527 where Daniel was cared for by a very caring and knowledgeable staff.

Edward Hogan
Corning, NY
Edward J. Hogan, 81 years, formerly of Corning, most recently residing at Tinkertown Road, Addison, NY (in the loving care of his daughter, Colleen), died Monday, June 13, 2005 at the Corning Hospital.
He was born August 12, 1923 in Troy, PA, the son of the late James and Fannie Barrett Hogan. A lifelong resident of the area, he attended Northside High School.
Ed and Edith White were married Aug, 16, 1948 at St. Mary’s Church, Corning. She predeceased him October 29, 2002.
He was a veteran of the US Army, during World War II serving in Africa, Europe, and the Battle of the Bulge.
Ed was a retiree of the United States Post Office were he was a clerk with 30 years of service with the post office.
He was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Vincent de Paul Church, Corning VFW, and a lifetime member of the American Legion John P Eaton Post, Sugar & Spice Senior Citizens, Corning Painted Post Hall of Fame (All High Football Team), and also a member of the Marconi Lodge. Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and a lifelong friend to anyone who knew him.
He is survived by son: Patrick (Gwendolyn) Hogan of Troy, WI, daughters; Colleen (Raymond) White, Geraldine (Alan) Keeney both of Addison, NY, Kathleen (David) Bedell of Rome PA. Eleven Grandchildren, several Great Grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Brother; Joseph (Pat) Hogan of Corning, NY and sisters; Theresa (George) Ketchum of Painted Post, NY, Winifred Cross of Corning, NY and Irene Swain of Daytona Beach, FL.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY, Thursday, June 16, 2005 from 4-7pm. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home, Friday, June 17, 2005 at 9:00am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Corning, NY. Committal Prayers, Full Military Rites and Interment will be held at the family plot of St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning.
The family would appreciate Memorial Donations be given in Ed’s name to: Children’s Miracle Network, 600 Roe Ave, Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira, NY 14905, or to: Special Olympics, 6838 Industrial Park, Bath, NY 14810.

Robert "Bob" Gross
Lake Wales, FL
Robert Lynn "Bob" Gross, 81 years formerly of Corning and most recently of Liberty, PA and wintering in FL, died Monday June 6, 2005 at the Winter Haven Hospital in Florida.
He was born December 14, 1923 in Tiadaghton, PA, the son of the late Robert William and Hillred Parsons Gross.
Bob was a graduate of Charleston High School and Mansfield University. He also attended Kalamazoo University in Michigan, the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY and Boston University, MA.
He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp, serving during World War II as a B25 pilot (totaling 31 years active and reserve service).
Bob and Norie Falk were married in 1947. She predeceased him June 2, 1992. His second marriage was to Dolores "Sis" Harper in August of 1993.
He was a teacher for the Corning/Painted Post School System, teaching at Corning Free Academy and Northside High School, retiring with 27 years service. Bob was a past officer of the New York State Teachers Association.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Corning and Oregon Hill Church in Morris, PA, a member of 46 years and Exalted Ruler of the Corning Lodge of Elks #1071. An avid hunter and fisherman and Hunter Safety Course Instructor. Bob had given his time as a Boy Scout Leader for over twelve years. A member of the National Rifle Association and National Geographic Society, the Corning VFW and the John P. Eaton American Legion Post.
Surviving his wife, Dolores "Sis" Gross. Daughters, Patti Farmer of Denver, CO, Pam Gross of Lake Wales, FL, Peggy (Larry) Stinson of Bath, NY, Penny (Tim) Mase of Liberty, PA, Sally (Kevin) Marmora of Nauvoo, PA and Jan Bailey of Williamsport, PA. Sons, Michael D. (Patsy) Gross of Waverly, NY, Harold (Jan) Gross of Corning, NY, Craig (Toni) Gross of Tampa, FL. and Brian (Tina) Gross of Hampton, VA. Brothers, Mort (Waneta) Gross of Corning, NY, Don Gross of Sacramento, CA and Jim (Helen) Gross of Corning, NY. Sisters, LeLa Ames of Los Angeles, CA and Laura Heichel of Cameron, NY. Twenty Grandchildren and Twenty one Great Grandchildren. Also several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Edna Bower.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Haughey Funeral Home 216 E. First St., Corning, NY.
The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church of Corning, 110 East First St, Corning, NY, Saturday June 18, 2005 from 1-4pm. A Lodge of Sorrows Service will be conducted by the Corning Lodge of Elks #1071 at the church, Saturday June 18, 2005 at 3:45pm. A Memorial Service will follow at 4:00pm, Rev. James Ellis and son, Craig Gross officiating. Prayers of Committal, Full Military Rites and Interment will be held at Kennedyville Cemetery in Wellsboro, PA, Sunday June 19, 2005 at 2pm.
The family would appreciate Memorial Donations be given in Bob’s name to the American Cancer Society, 1400 Winton Road North, Rochester, NY 14609-5896.
The family invites all to a Celebration of Bob’s Life following the service on Saturday 5pm at the Corning Lodge of Elks #1071, 148 Walnut St., Corning, NY.

Sonia Tostanoski
Corning, NY
Sonia H. Tostanoski, 67 years of West Sycamore Street, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at her home.
She was born November 4, 1937 in Elmira Heights, NY, the daughter of the late George and Anastasia Kerrick Platko. She was a graduate of Thomas Edison High School.
Sonia and John "Jack" Tostanoski were married October 15, 1960 in Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Elmira Heights, NY, they moved to Corning in 1961.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, a past parish council member, an active volunteer for the church and the Altar Society. She was a Trustee of the Holy Myrrhbearers Monastery. Sonia was a loving wife, mother, sister, godmother and Baba. She was a care-giver of her grandchildren, and was a selfless, generous person always giving of herself to others.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years; Jack, sons; Timothy John (Michele) Tostanoski of Painted Post, NY, Jay John (Lee) Tostanoski of Corning, NY. Grandsons; Nicholas John and Alexander Timothy. Sisters; Olga Mowchan of Dallas, TX and Tillie Spencer of Florida. Brother; Stephen (Joan) Platko of Groton, CT. Also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY.
The family will receive friends Thursday, June 2, 2005 from 2-4 & 6-8pm at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, 254 Sunset Drive, Corning, NY with Funeral Matins at 7:30pm. The Funeral Divine Liturgy will be Friday, June 3, 2005 at 10:00am, at the church, the Rev. Stephen Loposky celebrant. Burial Service and Interment will be held at the family plot in St. Mary’s Orthodox Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Sonia requested Memorial Donations be given to St. Mary’s Orthodox Church Building Fund, 7 Chatfield Place, Painted Post, NY 14870.

Mary T. Smoogen
Corning, NY
Mary Theresa Smoogen, 81 years of Steuben St, Painted Post, NY died Friday, May 27, 2005 at Founders Pavilion.
She was born March 21, 1924 in Corning, NY the daughter of the late James and Carmella DiVincenza Lesso. A graduate of Corning Free Academy and a lifetime resident of the area.
Mary and John "Jack" Smoogen were married August 14, 1948 at St. Mary’s Church, Corning, NY. He predeceased her December 23, 1991.
She was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Vincent de Paul Church, a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She loved her trips to the casinos, winning at BINGO, and playing cards.
Mary was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Surviving her son; William J. Smoogen of Fort Lauderdale, FL, daughters; Deborah Ann Gilbert of Fort Mill, SC and Nancy (Paul) Williamson of Corning. Grandchildren; David Heller, Stacie Leonard, Jodi Smoogen, Mark Williamson, Scott Williamson, and William Smoogen. Great grandchildren; Mikayla, Connor, Tyler and Nicole. Brother; John (Sylvia) Balldini of Corning, NY, sister; Ann (Milton) Hollenbaugh of Corning, NY, sister-in-law; Esther Lesso of Corning, NY. Also several nieces and nephews.

A Prayer Service will be held at the funeral home Tuesday, May 31, 9:30am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 10:00am St. Vincent de Paul Church. Eileen Purcell

Eileen N. Purcell, 84 years, of West Second Street, died Thursday, May 26, 2005 at the Corning Hospital.
She was born March 23, 1921 in Corning, NY the daughter of the late Willaim and Elizabeth Curran Nares. A lifetime resident of the area, she was a graduate of St. Patrick’s Catholic School, and Corning Free Academy.
Eileen and Thomas F. Purcell were married June 20, 1959 at St. Patrick’s Church, Corning, NY.
She had been employed with Schulte United Department Store as the office manager, the First National Bank & Trust Company and Rockwells Department Store on Market Street, Corning, NY.
She was a member of All Saints Parish attending St. Mary’s Church, and had helped with the counting of the collection. Eileen was a loving and devoted wife and mother dedicated to the needs of her family. To know her was to love her.
Surviving her loving and devoted husband Thomas of 45 years, sons; Roger W. (Margaret) Purcell of Albany, NY and Thomas J. Purcell Jr. of Rochester, NY. Brother; Joseph (Carolyn) Nares of Corning, NY sisters-in-law; Mary (La) Wilson of Ohio and Ellen Carver of Big Flats, NY, also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sister, Grace Howe.
There will be no calling hours. A Prayer Service will be held Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 9:00am at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 9:30am at St. Mary’s Church, Corning. Committal Prayers and Interment will take place at the family plot of St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning, NY.

Florence Connaughton
Florence L. Connaughton, 92 years of Sharwill Place, Corning, NY, died Monday, May 23, 2005 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center.
She was born, September 11, 1912 in Corning, NY the daughter of the late George and Bertha Lutz Schaller. She was a lifetime resident of the area, and a graduate of St. Patrick’s Catholic School.
Florence and Alfred Connaughton were married in St. Vincent de Paul’s Church, October 7, 1967. He predeceased her in 1996.
Florence had been employed with Corning Hospital as a switchboard operator, and at Ingersoll Rand in the Blue Print Department.
Florence was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Vincent de Paul Church. She was a loving and devoted wife, she enjoyed baking, cooking, and socializing with her many dear friends. She also enjoyed a good game of euchre.
She is survived by step-daughters; Maureen Connaughton of Chester, NY and Jane Connaughton of Corning, NY. Sister; Caroline O’Brian of Corning. Also several nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband, her sister; Gertrude Todd, and brothers; Edward Schaller and Leo Schaller.

Lauretta T. Beckhorn

Lauretta T. Beckhorn, 91 years, of Frog Hollow Road, Painted Post, NY died Saturday, May 21, 2005 at Corning Hospital following an extended illness. She was born October 16, 1913 in Pulteney, NY daughter of the late Archie and Ada J. Anderson Thompson. Lauretta was a graduate of Savona Central School and Alfred University in 1935. She married Louis Arthur Beckhorn September 17, 1937, he predeceased her on December 24, 2004. Prior to retirement Lauretta was employed as a Senior Accountant in the Financial Department at Ingersoll Rand with 33 years of service. She was a member of the Coopers Plains United Methodist Church and the Corning Painted Post Quota Club. Survivors include her two sisters, Shirley (Richard) Lester of Avoca, NY, Margaret Lois Rasmussen of Fairfield, Ct her brother Warren (Ruby) Thompson of Savona, NY, several nieces, nephews, good friends, Betty and Jack Clarkson and Bea and Phil Ingraham. Lauretta was predeceased by her husband Louis, brother Joseph Thompson and sister Virginia Reynolds. Family and friends are invited to call from 1 to 3 PM Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at the Haughey Funeral Home 216 E. First Street, Corning, NY. Funeral and committal services will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 3 PM with Rev. J. David Wolcott of the Coopers Plains United Methodist Church Officiating. Interment will be on the family plot in Fairview Cemetery, Painted Post, NY.

Raymond E. Calkins

Raymond E. Calkins, 85 years of Green Meadows Acres, Campbell, NY, died Monday May 16, 2005 at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 6, 1920 in Corning, NY, the son of the late Dennis Emery and Mary Hughes Calkins. A lifetime resident of the area and a graduate of Corning Free Academy. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II, serving in the Philippines.
He was a retired employee with Corning Incorporated as a grinder.
Raymond and Catherine E. Barrett were married May 25, 1946 in St. Vincent de Paul Church, Corning, NY. Catherine predeceased him March 4, 1988.
Ray was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Patrick’s Church. He was a gentle and loving man and enjoyed reading and challenging puzzles.
Surviving his special friends; Robert Sr. and Annette Buckley of Campbell, NY and Gordon and Alberta McCann of Savona, NY, sisters-in-law; Veronica Baker of Cameron Mills, NY, Gertrude Williams of Woodhull, NY, Betty Graham of Hernando, FL and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY, Friday, May 20, 2005 from 10:30-11:30am with funeral and committal services to follow at 11:30am. Interment will be held in the family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning, NY.

Dorothy Ketchum

Dorothy Yvannah Ketchum, 92 years of 315 Delaware Ave, Painted Post, NY, died Friday May 13, 2005 at Founders Pavilion.
She was born June 8, 1912 in Geneva, NY the daughter of the late Robert and Jennie Ames Young. A lifetime resident of the area and a graduate of Northside High School, Ferguson School of Dance and Mr. Beard’s School of Business.
Dorothy and Harold "Hattie" Ketchum were married August 1, 1936 in Waverly, NY. He has predeceased her.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Painted Post, NY, a Girl Scout leader, member of the Girl Scout Council, a Cub Scout den mother, a member of the Calvin U. Smith School PTA and a supporter of several humane causes. Among her interest were cooking, crossword puzzles, flowers, reading, current events and the sport of baseball. She devoted her life to her family. They include her daughters; Linda J. Fields of Painted Post, NY, Jeanne (Jeffrey) K. Smith of Endwell, NY, son; David L. Ketchum of Painted Post, NY. Grandchildren; Nathan (Jennifer) Smith, Marlee (Eric) Flanders, Matthew and Gregory Smith, Jessica and Timothy Ketchum and Zachary Fields. Three Great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY, Sunday, May 15, 2005 from 3-5pm. A funeral Service will be held at the funeral home, Monday, May 16, 2005 at 11:00am Reverend Gary McCaslin officiating. Prayers of Committal and Interment will be held at Chapel Knoll Cemetery, Coopers Plains, NY.
