Alice Reagan Calkins
Painted Post, NY
Alice Reagan Calkins, 93 years, a life long resident of the Corning Painted Post area, died Wednesday February 7, 2007 at the Waters of Three Rivers.
She was born June 16, 1913 in Corning, NY the daugther of the late Jeremiah and Margaret Finnican Reagan and received her education from St. Patrick’s Catholic School and Corning Free Academy (graduating class of 1931).
Alice and Douglas G. Calkins were married Nov. 15, 1941 in St. Patrick’s Church, Corning, NY. (Douglas a Veteran of WWII and prominent Senior Attorney - predeceased her in 1971.)
She was employed as a secretary for Corning Inc. (Steuben Division) retiring in 1975.
Alice was a member of All Saints Parish, attending the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Painted Post and taught religious education classes to young students at the Church for many years, beginning with the church’s inception in 1952.
She was a sports enthusiast (keeping track of all areas of sports - via radio, news and tv.) Alice was a lifelong devoted New York Yankee fan. In earlier years (1956-1964) she worked diligently with the Painted Post Area Little League.
Alice was a caring and giving person - always concerned for others, sharing her home and table with students and individuals paving a way for success. A vast number of people will remember her kindness and hospitality. She had incredible dignity and was the last of her family generation. She was a loved and respected mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend to many. Alice will truly be missed by all.
Surviving her sons; David (Barbara) Calkins of Ellicott City, MD., Peter (Carolyn) Calkins of Corning, NY., and Christopher (Sandra) Calkins of Melbourne, Fl. Son in law; Howard D. Potter of Bath, N.Y. Grandchildren; James Jeffrey (Sherry) Johnson, Christine Speigner, Matthew Calkins, Katherine Calkins, Patrick Calkins, Carrie (Joel) Cook, Sarah Calkins, Rachel (Tony) Ruocco, Daniel (Stacy) Calkins, John, Jason and Michael Calkins. Eight Great Grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and countless friends.
She was predeceased by her daughter; M. Elizabeth (Liz) Potter, Brothers; Gerald (Claire) Reagan, Sisters; Genevieve (Joseph) Kelly, Catherine (Edward) Monahan, Margaret (Perry) Bradley, Dorothy (Donald) Beck and Dolores (Robert) Nitsche.
Family and Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home 216 E. First St., Corning, NY Friday February 9, 2007 from 4-7pm. A Prayer Service will be offered at the funeral home Saturday February 10, 2007 at 10:15am. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Painted Post, NY Committal Prayers and Interment will be held at the family plot in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Patrick M. "Meatball" McCaffery
Corning, NY
Patrick Michael "Meatball" McCaffery 52 years of 237 West Second Street died unexpectedly Saturday March 17, 2007 at his home.
He was born April 5, 1954 in Corning, NY, the son of Roderick L. And Rita McCarthy McCaffery. A lifetime resident of Corning, NY graduating from St. Vincent de Paul & St. Mary’s Catholic Schools and Corning Painted Post East High School.
Pat was employed as a Tradesman (Millwright) for Corning Inc. and was a member of the Steel Workers Union. He was a member of All Saints Parish and Race Services Inc.
Once you met "Meatball" you would never forget him. His generosity was unlimited when it came to his family and friends. Pat loved woodworking, cooking and helping others. His biggest love was spending time with his extended family and volunteering as a course marshall at WGI. He will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his mother; Rita McCaffery of Corning, NY Sisters; Colleen (Henry) Mapes of Campbell, NY, Mary Kay (Dominick) Lisi of Corning, NY, Kathleen McCaffery and Terry Nichols of Rochester, NY, Kelly McCaffery and Bill Sherman of Corning, NY and Maureen (David) Alford of Coopers Plains, NY. Chester S. "Chet" Harzinski 84 years of 326 Denison Parkway East died Tuesday January 30, 2007 at Founders Pavilion.
He was born November 18, 1922 in Arnot, PA., the son of the late John and Martha Dytczak Harzinski. He had attended the Arnot School System, Arnot, PA.
Chet and Mary L. Kapral were married July 1951 in St. Patrick’s Church, Corning, NY
He was employed as a Lab Technician with Corning Inc., at Sullivan Park, with 64 years active and inactive service.
Chet was a member of All Saints Parish. He was a devoted family man, avid outdoors man, enjoying gardening, fishing and hunting.
Surviving his wife of 55 years, Mary. Three sons; Robert (Rosary) Harzinski of Defiance, OH., William (Julie) Harzinski of Liverpool, NY and Richard (Rebecca) Harzinski of Corning, NY. Granddaugthers; Haili and Amanda. Sister; Regina Harzinski of Corning, NY. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by Brothers; Frank, Andrew J., Stanley, Anthony and Sister in law Marion. Sisters; Rose (and brother in law George) Mc Blane (and Catherine and brother in law Hilt) Clark.

Marian J. Livermore Halm
Painted Post, NY
Marian Janet Livermore Halm, 89 years of 3731 Meads Creek Road died Wednesday January 17, 2007 at The Waters of Three Rivers.
She was born May 4, 1917 in Corning, NY the daughter of the late Lawrence and Edith Phelps Livermore.
She was a lifetime resident of the area and she had attended the two room school house in Coopers, and was a graduate of Painted Post High School and Elmira Business Institute. She also had attended several banking educational programs.
Marian and George J. Cleveland Halm were married January 1, 1937 in the Campbell-Erwin Baptist Church, Coopers Plains, N.Y.
She was first employed with the Corning Glass Works Optical Department. Later she became employed at the First National Bank of Painted Post, N.Y., retiring from the First National Bank(Central Trust Bank) in 1968. She was co-owner of Halm-Livermore Laundry Mat, Elmira, N.Y. She was second generation of the family to serve as superintendent of the Coopers Plains Cemetery, retiring the position in 1999.
Marian was a member of the Campbell Erwin Baptist Church since her 12th birthday and served as Sunday school teacher and organist for the church for many years. She was a member and president of the Missionary Society of the church. Marian was a member and past regent of Corning DAR., member and Vice Chairman of the N.Y.S. DAR., N.Y.S. Chairman of the Flag of the USA., past matron of the Eastern Star, member of the Coopers Plains Grange #820, Corning Music Association and a past member of Church Women United.
Marian was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She loved people, especially infants and children and was a friend to so many, opening her home with caring hospitality. She truly will be missed by her family, many friends and business associates.
Surviving her husband of 70 years; George. Daughter and Son in law; Nancy and Francis Schosger of Painted Post, NY. Grandson; Francis G. Schosger of Painted Post, NY. Great Granddaughters; Thomasina Schosger and Julia Schosger both of Painted Post, NY. Also, sister in law, Irene Farr Livermore of Florida., and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brother; Clyde W. Livermore and sister; Inez F. Albee and brother in law; David Albee and Granddaughter; Lauralynn Schosger.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home 216 E. First St., Corning, NY Sunday January 21, 2007 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a Memorial Service at 3:30pm. Corning-Baron Steuben NSDAR will conduct a Memorial Service at 7:30pm. A Funeral Service will follow calling hours at the funeral home Sunday at 8pm., Rev. Dr. W. Hugh Tucker (retired pastor) and pastor Tom Bell of the Campbell-Erwin Baptist Church will officiate.
Committal Prayers and Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at the family plot in Coopers Plains Cemetery.

John Alan Mandzak

John Alan Mandzak, 79 years of 2105A Indian Hills Road., died Tuesday January 16, 2007at his home.
He was born August 19, 1927 in Corning, N.Y. the son of the late Simeon and Kata Timko Mandzak. John was a lifetime resident of the area and had attended Corning Free Academy. He was a veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marine Corp., stationed on the S.S. Ben Robertson in the China Sea during WWII (1945-1946).
John and Marguerite Butler were married June 2, 1945.
She predeceased him April 15, 1996.
He was a self employed carpenter/builder working in construction locally.
Surviving his son; John Michael (Patricia) Mandzak of Lewistown, Idaho. daughters; Mary Lisi of Savona, N.Y., Karen (Douglas) Gross of Pulteney, N.Y. and Lisa (Rick) Boyd of Orlando, Fl. Thirteen Grandchildren and Four Great Grandchildren. Sisters; Mary Baker of Bloomington, Indiana, Anne Kakos of Yonkers, NY., Kay (Terry) Baker of Rockville, MD. Brothers; George (Betty) Mandzak, Madison, Fl. and Michael (Mary) Mandzak of Washington, DC. Several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by daughter; Kathleen Hicks.

John Joseph Croft Jr.
Corning, NY
John Joseph Croft, Jr. 94 years formerly of Roosevelt St., died Wednesday evening January 10, 2007 at Corning Hospital.
He was born in Omaha, Nebraska March 21, 1912 the son of the late John and Margaret Moran Croft.
He was a graduate of Addison High School and had attended Georgetown University (Engineering Dept).
John and Pauline "Polly" Nitsche were married May 5, 1939 in St. Mary’s Church. She predeceased him September 12, 2004.
He had been a resident of Corning for approximately 85 years.
John was a supervisor of Engineering of Furnace Design for Corning Inc. from 1939-1946. He left that position to establish his own business John Croft Builders working in the area from 1947 to the late 1980's. He was also a member of Croft, Manning and Adamy Developers and was involved with the development of the water systems and housing development of Morningside Heights, Gang Mills.
He was a member of All Saints Parish attending St. Vincent de Paul Church, a member of Home Builders Association and the Elmira Flying Club. John had purchased his own plane in 1957 and was an avid pilot.
As a local builder over the years he was involved with the construction of numerous homes in Corning, Big Flats, and Erwin. His talents, trustworthiness and efforts for others were part of his success as a Businessman and devoted community citizen.
He was a loving and devoted Husband, Dad and Grandfather. Always generous to others, caring for and helping many individuals.
Surviving his daughter; Mary Elizabeth Rimavicus of Eastham, MA. Granddaughter; Malia Elizabeth Rimavicus of Kawai, Hawaii. Brother; William H. (Mary) Croft of San Antonio, TX. Sister in law; Catherine Croft of East Corning, N.Y. Also several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by son; John "Jackie" Croft (1972) and older brother Edward Croft and youngest brother; Bernard F. Croft.

Mary E. O'Brien

Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" O’Brien 90 years, formerly of West Fourth Street died Wednesday December 27, 2006 at Founders Pavilion.
She was born July 12, 1916 in Canandaigua, NY. the daughter of the late Matthew C. and Agnes Bagley O’Brien. A lifelong resident of Corning, graduating from Corning Free Academy and the University of Rochester Economics Department, receiving her BA Degree.
Betsy was employed in the Administration Department at Cornell University and later with Corning, Inc.
She was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Mary’s Church and was a life long member of the Legion of Mary.
Surviving her cousins; Ellen Hallett of Wellsley, MA., Brien Hallett of Hawaii, Joseph Hallett, Wellsley, MA., Irene Hallett, Memphis, TN and David Hallett of Mt.Pleasant, S.C. Also numerous Cousins.
The Haughey Funeral Home 216 E. First St., Corning, NY has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

Lawrence Nordlie
Corning, NY
Lawrence A. "Mike" Nordlie 84 years of Corning, NY died unexpectedly Tuesday December 12, 2006 at the Corning Hospital.
He was born August 14, 1922 in Wellsboro, PA the son of the late Einar and Hilda Lundequist Nordlie. A graduate of Wellsboro High School. He relocated to the area in 1940. Veteran of WWII serving with the United States Army 98th Infantry Division stationed in the Philipines and at Sampson Air Force Base. (1942-1946)
After WWII Mike met and married Marianne Schwerer; September 25, 1948 in Corning, NY, his beloved wife of 54 years. She predeceased him January 26, 2002.
He was employed as a Chemical Technologist with Corning, Inc., retiring in 1984 with 41 years service with the company. During his employment with Corning, Mike received several government patents for his contributions to the glass industry.
In his early years Mike enjoyed hunting and fishing in Corning’s surrounding areas. Both Mike and Marianne liked working with landscaping and on improvement projects in and around their home. Following their retirement with Corning Inc. they continued to thoroughly enjoy their life together.
In later years he discovered that his talents went beyond his skills in carpentry and wood working. Mike discovered he could beautifully design and carve in wood almost anything he set his mind to.
In still later years he discovered how much he enjoyed traveling. This new hobby tide in with his life long passion for reading almost anything and continued his deep interest in history.
Until his wife Marianne’s death, Mike made every effort to attend his WWII 98th Division Reunions.
In the past four years, if it was 5pm you could usually find Mike having a beer with his buddies at the East End Pub or American Legion.
Mike continued to make new friend with all the people he came in contact with. Both his friends and devoted family will miss him very much.
All who knew him as "Unka Mike" are grateful for the wonderful memories they have.
Unka Mike was a "keeper" but the Lord graciously decided it was time for him to be in his eternal home. Uncle Mike went suddenly with complete peace, leaving behind his lifetime of love and memories for us all to cherish.
Survivors are his nieces; Cathy Guy of Ellicott City, MD. Julie Slater of Lancaster, NY, Janis Moore of Port Aransas, TX., Mary Ann Kratochvil of Muncie, IN. and Pat Buckley of Louisville, KY. His nephew; Mike Miller of Lafitte, LA. Cousin; Arlene Rylander of Corning, NY. Sister in law; Ruth Nordlie of Raleigh, N.C.
There will be a Funeral Service at the Haughey Funeral Home 216 E. First St., Corning, NY 14830 Friday December 15, 2006 at 2pm followed by Committal Prayers & Interment at the family plot in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning, NY.

James Edward Dugan
James Edward Dugan, age 84 years, native of Hornby, NY and well known resident of West Second Street in Corning passed away at the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath, NY, Thursday December 28, 2006, courageously living with the disabling effects of Parkinson's.
Jim was born July 5, 1922 in Corning, son of Benjamin and Edith Stewart Dugan. He grew up in Hornby attending the one-room schoolhouse there while helping out on his parents' potato farm. He graduated from Northside High School in 1940 and began working at Chowning Regulator where he went through their apprentice program. There he honed his skills becoming a master machinist, tool-dye maker and eventually shop foreman. While working at Chowning and part-time at Harry Mourhess's Texaco Gas Station, he invented and patented a rotary pump-motor that he marketed internationally. Harry sponsored his patent application. Jim retired from Chowning Regulator in 1987 with 40 years service with the company.
During his career, Jim also worked short term at both Glendale Tool and at the A&P plant in Big Flats, N.Y.
In 1943 Jim voluntarily joined the US Marine Corps and was stationed in the Marshall Islands during World War II, maintaining the engines on the military's F4U Corsair airplanes. Following his honorable discharge in 1945 he continued his support of the Marines as a life-long member of the Southern Tier Marine Corps League.
After the war, Jim and his loving wife of 53 years, Genevieve Wenderlich raised a family of six children. He always found time to help his friends and community. As a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Mary's church he was involved with multi remodeling projects for the church and building projects for Habitat for Humanity.
Jim was also a longtime salesman fir Knapp Shoes and in his spare time somehow managed to maintain all of Corning District's voting machines for over 35 years.
When he wasn't working, Jim found time for outings at Keuka Lake with family and close friends. Other highlights include a trip to Hawaii with his wife Gen in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary; in 1997 a trip to Ireland with his children to visit his ancestor's birthplace and in 19 he went to New Orleans where he became reacquainted with his marine buddy and tent-mate from WWII.
He will be greatly missed by his family, neighbors, relatives and his many, many friends and acquaintances throughout the area including his friends at Keuka Lake's Camp Airy.
Surviving him are his six children: Patricia E. Dugan (Roy Ernst) of Corning, Judith M. Echols (Les) of Corning, James B. Dugan (Charlotte Brion) of Painted Post, NY, Joan D. Wilson (James) of Dundee, Daniel J. Dugan of Elmira and William O. Dugan of Corning; his grandchildren: Stacy Ellen Vacca, Jennifer and Erin Dugan Echols, Cory Marie (Rich Pulver) and Patrick Brion Dugan; and a great-grandson Braiden Pulver; a sister Laura Lehman of Hornby; sisters-in-law, Mary Wenderlich of Auburn, Richardean Wenderlich of Corning and Rose Colamarino Dugan; brother-in-law, Edward Gustina of Painted Post; his loving nieces Jean Hakes, Edith Stempin, Faye Lehman, Kathleen Greene and Rosemary Wang; also other nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and great nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Genevieve in 1997, his son, John Dugan in 1954; his granddaughter, Stephanie Elizabeth Vacca in 1978 and his brother Alex in 2000.

Angelo J. Sementilli
Elmira, N.Y.
Angelo Joseph Sementilli 71 years of 161 Seneca St., Corning, N.Y. died Tuesday December 5, 2006 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center.
He was born November 10, 1935 in Corning, N.Y. the son of the late Vincenzo and Margarita Sorge Sementilli. A lifetime resident of Corning and a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School and Northside High School. He was a member of the New York State National Guard.
Angelo and Pietrina Sagaria were married October 6, 1956 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
For many years he and his brother Philip continued the ownership of his fathers restaurant , known as Jimmy’s Restaurant located on Market Street in Corning, N.Y.
Angelo was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and brother. His caring ways and humor will truly be missed by his family and many friends.
He was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Vincent de Paul Church, and member of the Church Choir, Resurrection Choir and a member of the Painted Post Barbershop Chorus.
Surviving his wife of 50 years, Pietrina. Daughters; Anita (Joe Melussi) Sementilli of New York, N.Y. and Ann Marie (Gary) Ermatinger of Pineville, LA. Sister; Mary (Howard) Orr of Panama City, Fl. Brothers; Dr. Vincent (Eleanor) Sementilli and Philip (Leona) Sementilli all of Corning, N.Y. Grandson; Brandon Ermatinger. Also several nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his Son; Joseph Angelo Sementilli and Sister; Mariangela Sementilli.

Theresa M. Fitzgerald

Theresa M. Fitzgerald 76 years formerly of Corning, N.Y. died Thursday November 23, 2006 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center.
She was born Oct 1, 1930 in Corning, N.Y. the daughter of the late John & Georgiana Xavier Louiz.
She was a graduate of Corning Free Academy.
Theresa Louiz and Robert Fitzgerald were married November 22, 1952 in Corning, N.Y.
She was a Homemaker.
Theresa was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Vincent de Paul Church.
Surviving: Daughter; Cindy (Rick) Pazzaglia of Columbia Cross Rds., PA. Daughter in law; Jane Fitzgerald. 12 Grandchildren; Bobbie, Lee, Tonya, Angela, Kristin, Kyra, Kaitlin, Joel, Heather, Eric, Brittany and Ryan. One great grandson; Rhiley. Also several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by Husband of 53 years; Robert "Bob" Fitzgerald(Sept. 26, 2006). Son; Paul Robert Fitzgerald (Sept. 12, 2004). Brothers;John Louiz and Eddie Louiz. Sisters; Mary McHale (Cerbara), Augusta Andrade, Margaret Knight, Louise Wheeler and Matilda Aker.
Callings hours will be held at the Haughey Funeral Home 216 E. First St., Corning, NY 14830 on Sunday, November 26, 2006 from 2-4pm. Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home Monday, November 27, 2006 at 9am, Committal Prayers & Interment will follow at the family plot in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning, NY.

Grace Ann Barker 86 years formerly of Corning, N.Y. died peacefully in her sleep at the Wayne County Nursing Home.
She was born August 4, 1920 in Corning, N.Y. the daughter of the late Clement and Theresa Kane Nitsche.
A life long resident of the area graduating from St. Mary’s Catholic School and Corning Free Academy and attended courses in Sewing at Cornell Cooperative Ext.
Grace was employed as a secretary for the Corning City School District for thirty years retiring in 1982.
She was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Mary’s Church, a charter member and former officer, secretary of the Education Association of Corning/Painted Post, a member of St. Mary’s Rosary Society, the League of the Sacred Heart, the Lioness Club and the Republican Committee Fourth Ward and Secretary.
She also volunteered at the Corning Hospital and the American Red Cross.
Grace loved to play bridge and Bingo. She taught sewing classes and was a Girl Scout Leader.
Among Survivors; Son, Charles R. (Lorraine) Barker of Hammondsport, N.Y. and Daughter, Kathy A (William) Semmler of Newark, N.Y. Two Grandchildren; Robert (Kate) Semmler and Laura Semmler. Two Great Granddaughters; Emma Grace Semmler and Chloe Rose Semmler. Also nephews; Jude (Carol) Nitsche and Charles (Mary Kay) Nitsche and niece; Judith Nitsche.
She was predeceased by Brothers; Robert and wife Dolores Nitsche and Charles and wife Maude Nitsche.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home 216 E. First St., Corning, N.Y. Sunday October 22, 2006 from 4-7pm. A Prayer Service will be offered at the funeral home Monday October 23, 2006 at 9:00am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am at St. Mary’s Church. Committal Prayers and Interment will be held at the family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning, N.Y.
A Memorial Mass will be offered Wednesday October 25, 2006 at 4pm at St. Michael’s Church, Newark, NY.
The family would appreciate Memorial Donations be given in Grace’s name to Wayne County Nursing Home Foundation/Activity Fund, 1529 Nye Rd. Lyons, NY 14489

Glenn E. Warner Sr.
Corning, NY
Glenn E. Warner, Sr. 78 years formerly of Presho and Village Square Apts., Painted Post, N.Y., died Saturday October 14, 2006 at Founders Pavilion.
He was born August 17, 1928 in Presho, NY, the son of the late Louis Raymond and Clara L Schoonover Warner. He attended the Presho School and was a graduate of Northside High School. He was a Veteran of the Army Air Force, serving during World War II.
Glenn and Joyce Ayers were married August 28, 1950 in Presho, N.Y.
A lifetime resident of the area and employed as a machinist with Ingersoll Rand-Dresser Rand, retiring in 1990 with 30 years service with the company.
Glenn was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed following the children and grandchildren with all their sports activities. He was an avid hunter, trapper, fisherman and gardener. Glenn will truly be missed by his family and many friends.
Surviving his wife, Joyce. Two sons; Glenn E. Warner, Jr. of Painted Post, N.Y. and Robert R. (Deborah) Warner of Presho, N.Y. Daughter; Kathie (Mickey) Bierwiler of Painted Post, N.Y. Four Grandchildren; Matthew (Jamie) Warner, Michelle (Joel) Dundas, Ryan Bierwiler and Andrea Warner. One great granddaughter; Allison Warner. Brother; Burton (Wanda) Warner of Painted Post, N.Y. Also several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother; Ross Warner and two sisters; Katie Adler and Marion Connelly.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home 216 E. First St., Corning, N.Y. Tuesday October 17, 2006 from 2-4pm and 6-7:30, with a Funeral Service to follow (7:30pm at the funeral home), Rev. Sandra Olmstead officiating. Committal Prayers and Interment will be held Wednesday October 18, 2006 at 10:00am at the family plot in the Presho Cemetery.
The family would appreciate Memorial Donations be given in Glenn’s name to: Founders Pavilion, 205 E. First St., Corning, N.Y. 14830.
