Deane L. Myers
Former Instructor at Niagara Falls Air Base
Deane L. Myers, 66, of Wilmington, NC, formerly of North Tonawanda, died Sunday, September 24, 2006, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington, NC, after a long illness. Mr. Myers was born on February 7, 1940 in North Tonawanda, and was the son of the late Dwight and Marie (nee Schlicker) Myers. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietman era, and had been a member and then a civilian instructor at the 914th Airlift Wing in Niagara Falls before retiring. Deane was also a member of the American Legion, Stephen Sikora Post No. 1322 in North Tonawanda.
He is survived his sister, Elaine (Michael) Addy of Wilmington, NC; three nieces, Catherine Ryder of Niagara Falls, and Jennifer (Daryll) McDonell and Patricia Kirst, both of North Tonawanda. Also surviving are many great nieces and nephews and a special friend, Bernadette Ford of North Tonawanda.
Services are being cared for in North Carolina. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at Sunrise Chapel Mausoleum at Elmlawn Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. Friends invited. If desired, memorials to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401, are preferred by the family. A memorial service may be held locally at a later time. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc. in Tonawanda.

Cecelia E. Vassallo
Cecelia (nee DeSanto) Vassallo, age 93, of Tonawanda, died Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at Hospice Buffalo, after a long illness. Born March 23, 1913 in Ralston, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Rosario and Rose (nee Lake) DeSanto and had resided in New Rochelle, NY for the greater part of her life, before moving to Tonawanda in 1998. Mrs. Vassallo had been employed at Chase Bank and then at St. GabrielÂ’s Church in New Rochelle before retiring, and was a member of the Catholic WomenÂ’s Club in New Rochelle and the New Rochelle Rowing Club. She was the wife of the late Louis F. Vassallo, who died January 28, 1976, and sister of the late Charles, James, Robert, Donald, and John DeSanto.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy A. Shaw of Tonawanda; her grandson, Patrick L. Shaw of Tonawanda; a sister, Theresa Rosato of Williamsport, PA; and a brother, Ronald DeSanto of Williamsport, PA. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 PM Thursday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM Friday at St. Christopher R.C. Church on Niagara Falls Blvd in the Town of Tonawanda. Friends invited.
Entombment will be cared for privately at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to St. Christopher Church Music Fund, 2660 Niagara Falls Blvd, Tonawanda, NY 14150, or Hospice Buffalo, 225 Como Park Blvd, Cheektowaga, NY 14227, are preferred by the family.

Michael J. Eberwein
Retired Teacher, Coach & Civic Leader
Michael “Coach Ebs” Eberwein, age 69, of North Tonawanda, died Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at his residence, after a brief illness. Born October 31, 1936 in Tonawanda, he was the son of the late Michael A. and Margaret (nee Stoll) Eberwein and had been a lifelong resident of the Tonawandas. A Mathematics teacher in the North Tonawanda School System for 35 years, before retiring in 1993, he was a baseball coach for the freshmen and varsity teams, and a swimming coach. After retiring, he continued as a Swim Meet official for the National Federation of State High School Associations for Swimming and Diving. He received a Teacher of the Year Award and a Niagara Frontier Umpire Sportsmanship Award.
Mr. Eberwein was a member of the North Tonawanda Democratic Committee and a former Alderman and Common Council president in North Tonawanda, as well as serving on the North Tonawanda Board of Appeals. During his political career, the new Public Library and Deerwood Golf Course were opened in North Tonawanda. Mr. Eberwein was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the Church Vestry. He also belonged to the Niagara Frontier Model A Restorers’ Club, where he was the current secretary, and was the first community member of the Tonawanda News Editorial Committee.
Throughout his life, Mike valued and treasured the friendship and respect of his students and athletes, his community, and the love and devotion of his family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan (nee Agnello) Eberwein of North Tonawanda; his loving daughter, Shelby (Michael) Laspesa of North Tonawanda; and two brothers, James (Carole) Eberwein of New Hampshire, and Thomas (Beatrice) Eberwein of North Tonawanda. He was the devoted grandfather of Andrew, Hayley and Miranda. Also surviving are a son, Eric Eberwein; a daughter, Amy Raines; three additional grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Thursday and Friday at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM Saturday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Payne Ave. & Tremont St. in North Tonawanda; the Rev. Jerre W. Feagin officiating. Friends invited. Interment at Acacia Park Cemetery will follow. If desired, memorials to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094, are preferred by the family.

Harold V. Heppeard
Navy Veteran of WW II
Harold “Lefty” Heppeard, 79, of the Town of Tonawanda, died Friday, September 29, 2006, at Veterans Hospital, Buffalo. Born June 13, 1927 in Rittman, Ohio, he was the son of the late Foster and Dolly (nee Hobbel) Heppeard. Mr. Heppeard had been a resident of the Tonawandas for the greater part of his life and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed with Bricklayers Local No. 45 in Buffalo until retiring, and was a member of the American Legion, Tonawandas Post No. 264. He was also an avid golfer and hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice M. Heppeard; three daughters, Mary Lou (Steve) Hovie, Susan (Al) Saxton and Eileen Heppeard; a son, Daniel Heppeard; and a brother Douglas Heppeard. Also surviving are a step-son, James (Evie) Allen; a step-daughter, Patricia (Michael) Krajewski; eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren..
Services were cared for privately at the convenience of the family, followed by inurnment at Elmlawn Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc. in Tonawanda.

Thomas L. Batt
Owned & Operated Batt Agency
Thomas L. Batt, age 84, of Wheatfield, died Friday, October 6, 2006, at Hospice Buffalo after a long illness. Born February 10, 1922 in Buffalo, he was the son of the late Lee and Ethel (nee Brumley) Batt and had been a lifelong resident of Wheatfield. An Army Air Force Veteran of WWII, he owned and operated the Batt Agency for 60 years. He was a past president of the Wheatfield Business Association and the Wheatfield Republican Club, a life member of St. Johnsburg Volunteer Fire Company and the American Legion, Wheatfield Post No. 1451, and was an award winning member of the Amateur Trap Shooting Association. He was the husband of the late Alice (nee Jaeger) Batt, who died in 1985.
He is survived by his son, Thomas L. Batt of Wheatfield.
Friends may call from 1-4 PM on Sunday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda, where funeral services will be held at 4 PM Sunday; the Rev. Msgr. James Connelly officiating. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to Niagara Feline Friends, 6943 Ellicott Road, Lockport, NY 14094, are preferred.

Russell G. Manz
Retired from Niagara Mohawk
Russell G. Manz, age 87, of the Town of Tonawanda, died Monday, October 9, 2006, at his residence after a brief illness. Born June 4, 1919 in Buffalo, he was the son of the late Christian and Wilhelmina (nee Schwender) Manz and was an Army Veteran of WWII. Mr. Manz was a purchasing agent for Niagara Mohawk before retiring, and was a member of St. Christopher R.C. Church, the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 860, and the LaSalle Yacht Club. He was the brother of the late Lester C. Manz, who died in 1993.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Eileen (nee Manning) Manz; his brother-in-law, Dr. H. Merton Smith; a niece, Barbara Ann McQueeny; and three nephews, Robert E. Fischer, Jr., Matthew Smith and Adam Smith. He was the great uncle of Maddie and Ryan McQueeny, and Robert E. Fischer, III, and cousin of John Feider and Bonnie Flickinger.
Services were cared for privately at the convenience of the family, followed by interment at Acacia Park Cemetery. If desired, memorials to Hospice Buffalo, 225 Como Park Blvd, Cheektowaga, NY 14227, are preferred by the family. Arrangements entrusted to the care of the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda.

Daniel W. Sinon
Avid Musician
Daniel W. Sinon, age 36, of North Tonawanda, died unexpectedly Saturday, October 21, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo. Born October 2, 1970 in North Tonawanda, he was the son of Diane (nee Dieter) and the late Robert G. Sinon, and was employed as a machine operator at ESP in Amherst. Daniel was an avid musician and enjoyed playing his guitar and working on his computer. He was the grandson of the late Russell and May Dieter and William and Clara Sinon.
He is survived by his mother, Diane Alexander of North Tonawanda; three sisters, Susan (Philip) Murphy of Cambria, Barbara (John) Sattelberg of Pendleton, and Karen (Donald) Sinon of Wheatfield; and a brother, David Sinon of Farmington. Also surviving are five nieces and two nephews.
There is no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 1 PM on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 453 Old Falls Blvd in North Tonawanda. Arrangements entrusted to the care of the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda.
