Stanley and Mary Dishaw, formerly of Spencerport
Stanley R. Dishaw, 80, of Virginia Beach, died October 30, 2003. Mary T. Dishaw, 77, also of Virginia Beach, died December 8, 2004. Stanley was born May 14, 1923, in Ogdensburg to Silas and Maude Dishaw. Mary was born November 27, 1927 in Syracuse to Harold and Frances Keville. They are survived by their son, Timothy, of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Stanley joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served on board the USS Howard F. Clark (DE 533) as a Machinist Mate, fighting in the Pacific theatre at Iwo Jima, the Philippines, and Okinawa. Discharged in 1946, he returned to the U.S. and on July 4, 1953 married an energetic, go-getter of a woman who would be his wife for over 50 years. Their first house was in Baldwinsville. They then moved to Spencerport, a place they so dearly loved. This is where their son was born, and Stanley started work with Aetna Life and Casualty as a safety inspector. A promotion within Aetna transferred them to Granby, Connecticut where they lived until his retirement in 1985. They then lived in Many, Louisiana, Little River, South Carolina and finally Virginia Beach, Virginia. Stanley will be remembered as a strong, proud man, not one to often show his emotions. He loved his family and truly valued his friends.
Mary grew up on a farm near Syracuse and worked at Niagara Mohawk Power. When her son was born she took up raising him full time. Still active in the community, Mary became a champion of environmental protection wherever she lived. In Spencerport, she was the primary catalyst for the design and implementation of the Towpath canal park, and received numerous awards, which included the Marion B. Darrow conservation medal. In Granby she once again made her mark by serving on a variety of committees, and was especially proud of her work on the Tudor and Laura Holcomb farm project. In Many, she was the recipient of the state's Good Land Use Award, and was recognized by the governor himself. Mary will be remembered as a strong-willed woman, devoted and unyielding in her causes to make this world a better place for all of us.
Their last wish was to have no service, but to simply be remembered fondly by those they loved, and to be buried in Minoa, New York, near where they started their lives together.
