John Davey
January 3, 2000
John Davey
John T. "Jack" Davey Sr., 80, of Van Dyke Avenue, Amsterdam, died this morning at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born June 22, 1919, in Amsterdam, the son of John and Winifred Smith Davey. He was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute.
He was employed at the former Fonda-Johnstown-Gloversville Railway Co. as an Amsterdam transit driver for 30 years and as a custodian at the former Bishop Scully High School for 10 years.
Mr. Davey was an accomplished drummer in his own band and with others.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 209, and the 4th Degree Monsignor William A. Brown General Assembly.
He married Jean Agresta in 1942.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, John T. Davey Jr. of Amsterdam; two daughters, Rosalie Farrington of Rotterdam Junction and Winifred Borja of Rochester; a brother, William F. Davey of Virginia; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, followed at 10:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, 158 E. Main St., Amsterdam.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Institute.

Elmer Harris
January 2, 2000
Elmer W. Harris, 84, of Stewart Street, Amsterdam, died early Sunday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 24, 1915, in Piercefield, the son of Wallace and Grace Kidder Harris. For many years, he lived in Tonawanda and worked for Vanraulte as a textile mechanic for 43 years, retiring in 1980. He lived in Fredonia for 14 years before moving to Saratoga Springs in 1961. Mr. Harris moved to Amsterdam in 1996.
He was active with the Boy Scouts of America, and was a scout leader. He was also a member for the First Presbyterian Church in Fredonia.
He married Ruth E. Haskin May 5, 1938.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, David Harris of Gilroy, Calif., and Steven Harris of Amsterdam; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces.
A memorial service is scheduled at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Dan Wheeler officiating.
Burial of cremains will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
A calling hour will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Elsie Dicks
January 1, 2000
Elsie A. Dicks, 90, of Sagamore Drive, Liverpool, died Saturday evening at Birchwood Healthcare Center in Liverpool after a long illness.
She was born March 29, 1909, in Woodside, the daughter of Isaac and Lillian Shepherd Dicks. She graduated from Fort Plain High School. She moved to Liverpool in 1996.
She was employed at the Beech-Nut Nutrition Corp. in Canajoharie as a stenographer for 44 years, retiring in 1974.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She was a member of the Beech-Nut 25-year club.
Survivors include two nieces, Joan Oksa of Liverpool and Barbara Hoffman of Hopedale, Mass.; two nephews, Robert Dicks Sr. of Whitesboro and John Dicks of Tampa, Fla.; 11 great-nieces and great-nephews; and seven great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Gray-Hotaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Alan Baumback officiating.
Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.
A calling hour will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 126, Canajoharie 13317.

Norbert Gerow
January 1, 2000
Norbert Lorne Gerow, 81, of Gloversville, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home, Gloversville, following a short illness.
He was born Aug. 20, 1918, in Ontario, the son of Richard N. and Frances Young Gerow. He attended school in Canada. He moved to Gloversville in 1994.
He served with the Canadian Army from 1938-1945.
He was employed as a toolmaker.
He was a member of St. Mark's Baptist Church in Rochester, where he was a former deacon and chairman on committee for evangelism.
Survivors include three sons, Gordon Gerow of Hilton, Richard Gerow of Rochester, and John Gerow of Naples; a step-sister, Brenda McHale of Rochester; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
There are no services or calling hours.
Cremation will be in Vale Crematory, Schenectady.
Arrangements are by the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main St., Johnstown.

Hermosa Wilkins
January 2, 2000
Hermosa Johnson Wilkins, 95, of 15 Gillen Terrace, Gloversville, died Sunday at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility where she resided for two weeks.
She was born June 12, 1904, in Ludlow, Vt., the daughter of Alvin and Jennie Smith Johnson. She graduated from Ludlow High School. She lived in Gloversville since 1939.
She was a hairdresser for several years.
She married W. Nelson Wilkins in 1939. He died in 1958.
Survivors include a son, James N. Wilkins of Gloversville; a daughter, Hannah Voigt of Oak Park, Ill.; a sister, Vinette Dornbier of Inglis, Fla.; a brother, Neil Johnson of Rutland, Vt.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
There are no services or calling hours.
Interment will be in Union Rural Cemetery, Mayfield, in the spring.
Arrangements are by the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., Gloversville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany 12205.

Stephen Ryder
January 5, 2000
Stephen E. Ryder, 69, of Orange Street, Gloversville, died Wednesday at home after a long illness.
He was born in Gloversville March 24, 1930, the son of Stephen E. and Ellen Payne Ryder. He was a 1948 graduate of Gloversville High School and a lifelong area resident.
He was a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1970, serving in combat in Korea and Vietnam.
He was then an insurance salesman for The Equitable, an automobile salesman at the former Shepard Pontiac-GMC, as well as at Rose Buick, Pontiac, GMC, and at the former Procita Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, all of Gloversville. He retired in 1992.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Johnstown, where he was active in NOAH, a community team that serves meals to several hundred people on Sundays.
Mr. Ryder was also a member of Kokuski Masonic Lodge 15 of Fussa, Japan; past patron of Cayadutta Chapter 166 Order of the Eastern Star; Pine Tree Rifle Club; the EOMEOS; the Ancient Order of Foresters; Hales Mills Country Club and its men's group; was a member of American Legion Post 137, a life member of VFW Post 2077, all of Gloversville; and the NRA. He was also a volunteer for the Fulton County Meals on Wheels.
He married Janette R. Lardie Oct. 5, 1963.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Stephen Ryder of Albuquerque, N.M., Stephen Ryder of Gloversville, and Gordon Ryder of Durango, Colo.; a brother, Sidney J. Batty of Ballston Spa; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral is 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. George M. Garin, Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. today at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc. 51 Fremont St., Gloversville.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 1 N. Market St., Johnstown 12095; or Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville 12078.

Martha Camm
January 6, 2000
Martha Camm, 80, formerly of Johnstown, died Thursday at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home, where she had been a patient since November.
She was born in Bartow, Fla., and graduated from high school there. She lived in the Johnstown area most of her life.
During World War II, she worked in the engineering office of the War Department. Most recently she was an assistant in the Fulton County Office for the Aging.
Mrs. Camm was a member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church and volunteered in the church office.
Survivors include her husband, Edwin S. Camm; three daughters, Ruth Camm of Brookline, Mass., Jane Trilling of Lutz, Fla., and Jean Sparacin of Ossining; and five grandchildren.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church, Johnstown.
Cremation will be at Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley.
There are no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Ehle Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to Nathan Littauer Nursing Home.

James Stevens
January 6, 2000
James T. Stevens, 58, of Lyon Street, Amsterdam, died Friday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Schenectady on March 24, 1941, he was the son of George and Bernice Butts Stevens. He attended Schenectady schools and was a graduate of Mt Pleasant High School. He had lived in Amsterdam for the past 30 years.
Mr. Stevens was employed by General Electric. He was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church of Amsterdam, a member of the G.E. Quarter Century Club and a former member of the Carmen Volunteer Fire Department.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He married the former Michele Giaquinto on Aug. 8, 1970.
Besides his wife, survivors include a son, James M. Stevens of Amsterdam; two daughters, Renee and Tammy Stevens of Amsterdam; two sisters, Anne Fowler of Schenectady and Karen Keenan of Saratoga; a grandchild; nieces; nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:15 a.m. Monday at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, in care of the funeral home.

Elena Gonzalez
January 6, 2000
Elena G. Gonzalez, 81, of Upper Franklin Street, Fultonville, died Friday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Costa Rica on January 12, 1918, she was the daughter of Evangelina and Federico Gonzalez. She was educated in Costa Rica and moved to this area nine years ago.
Mrs. Gonzalez was a homemaker and a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
She was predeceased by her husband, Hernam Estrada.
Survivors include a son, Bonarges Estrada of Costa Rica; seven daughters, Iris Estrada Gonzalez, Zaida Estrada Gonzalez and Vilma Estrada Gonzalez, all of Costa Rica, Evangelina Soto and Ruth Tirado, both of Amsterdam, Gladys Rivera of Arizona and Sonia Vega of Fultonville; a brother, Federico Gonzalez of Costa Rica; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam. Burial is in St. John's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Edward Fox
January 10, 2000
Edward D. Fox Sr., 65, of Stone Arabia Street, Nelliston, died suddenly Monday at the Amsterdam Riverfront Dialysis Center.
He was born Oct. 27, 1934, in Nelliston, the son of David L. and Alice E. Lampman Fox. He was educated at the former Nelliston School and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Fox was a bulk tank truck driver for several area dairies. He retired from Delwood Dairy in Herkimer in 1997.
Mr. Fox served in the U.S. Army.
He was of the Lutheran faith.
He was a member of Fort Plain American Legion Post 554, Canajoharie-Fort Plain Elks Lodge 2621, Canajoharie Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 853, Ephratah Rod and Gun Club, and Earl Stock Memorial VFW Post 3275 in Fort Plain.
Survivors include two sons, Edward D. Fox Jr. of Gloversville and Jeffrey A. Fox of Nelliston; a brother, Richard Fox of Fonda; five sisters, Myra Fox of Fort Plain, Jean Vainauskas of Hagaman, Elizabeth Belfance of Perth, Raylene Cole of Amsterdam, and Alma Wells of Mount Morris; and one grandson.
A memorial service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday at the Gray, Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.
Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.
There will be no calling hours.
