Doris Riach
February 4, 2000
Doris F. Riach, 77, of Spring Street, Gloversville, died Friday at the Nathan Littauer Extended Care Facility, Gloversville, after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Cobleskill and attended schools there.
Mrs. Riach was employed by Rubins Glove Co. until her retirement. She was a member of the Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Riach, who died in 1988.
Survivors include a son, Steven Riach of Gloversville; a stepson, Joseph Riach of Gloversville and four grandchildren.
Cremation will take place at Parkview Crematory, Schenectady. A graveside service will be conducted in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nathan Littauer Extended Care Facility, 99 E. State St., Gloversville, 12078.
Arrangements are by the Barter and Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown.

James Dobis
February 4, 2000
James Dobis, 81, of Lakewood Drive, Saratoga Springs, died Friday at Saratoga Hospital.
Born in Amsterdam on June 18, 1918, he was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Dobis was employed by the U.S. Government at the Army Depo in Schenectady. He was a member of St. Clement's Church.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific theatre. He participated in the battle for Guadicanal and was awarded a Bronze Star and a Presidential Citation.
He married the former Mary McAfee on Aug. 12, 1983.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Dobis, in 1980; a daughter, Jacqueline Hudson, in 1995 and a granddaughter, Lori Hudson, in 1988.
Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, James Dobis of Hereford, Ariz. and Michael Dobis of Saratoga Springs; a sister, Mary Baker of Amsterdam; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Saratoga Springs.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the William J. Burke and Sons Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Capital District Chapter, 1450 Western Ave., Albany, 12203 or to the Alzheimer's Association, Capital District Chapter, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, 12206-2083.

Dorothy Waters
February 4, 2000
Dorothy I. Waters, 87, of 31 Ann St., St. Johnsville, died Friday at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home.
Born in Amsterdam on March 10, 1912, she was the daughter of Thomas and Elsie Dingman Nevins. She was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute and attended the Broadalbin Teachers Training Class.
Mrs. Waters was employed by Central National Bank at its St. Johnsville office until her retirement. She served as Town Tax Collector and served two terms on the Town Council. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church and the Senior Citizen Saints of St. Johnsville.
Survivors include two sons, Hector Allen of Oppenheim and John Waters, of East Schodack; a daughter, Linda Waters of Palatine Bridge; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. Kenneth Swain officiating. Spring burial will be in Fort Plain cemetery.
A calling hour will precede the funeral service, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to S.A.V.A.C.

Amelia Abdella
February 7, 2000
Amelia Abdella, 92, of 16 Judson Parkway, Gloversville, died Monday at home after a short illness.
She was born April 24, 1907, in Gloversville, the daughter of Hykel I. and Hanna H. Simon Abdella. She was a 1925 graduate of Gloversville High School and completed two years at a finishing school in Washington, D.C.
She was a bookkeeper at the former H.I. Abdella Clothing Store in Gloversville and later worked at Burdine's Clothing in Miami Beach, Fla., as well as at Addis Co. in Syracuse. Most recently she was an aid at the Syracuse University Library.
She was a member of Cayudutta Chapter 166 Order of the Eastern Star, Gloversville, for more than 50 years.
Survivors include three nieces, Joan N. Esper of Gloversville, Anita Potocar of Bethel Park, Pa., and Linda Ramirez of Corona, Calif; two nephews, David Abdella and Douglas Abdella, both of Redlins, Calif.; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
A prayer service is scheduled at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, with the Rev. Donald Czelusniak, pastor of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, officiating.
Spring interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Calling hours are 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville 12078; or a charity of one's choice.

Bernice Dockerty
February 7, 2000
Bernice C. Dockerty, 92, of the Little Falls Skilled Nursing Facility, and formerly of St. Johnsville, died Monday at Little Falls Hospital.
She was born May 8, 1907, in St. Johnsville, the daughter of Michael O. and Amelia Wiles Dockerty. She was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School, the Kingston Hospital Nursing School, and of Babies Hospital in New York City. She was a resident of the St. Johnsville area for more than 88 years.
Until her retirement in 1959, she was a registered nurse at Van Allen Nursing Home in Little Falls. She worked at various hospitals, including Kingston Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital and Amsterdam Memorial Hospital. She was also a pediatric nurse, taking outside cases and traveling with sick children.
Survivors include her sister, Agnes Dockerty of Amsterdam; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, followed at 2 p.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. Kenneth Swain officiating.
Burial will be in St. Johnsville Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Van Allen Nursing Home or to St. Patrick's Church.

Helen Miller
February 5, 2000
Helen E. Miller, 71, of West Madison Avenue, Johnstown, died Saturday at the Wells Nursing Home after a long illness.
She was born in Ephratah and educated at the Rome School for the Hearing Impaired.
She was a glove maker at home and owned a farm in the Ephratah area until 1966, when she retired.
She was a member of the Perth Bible Church.
Her husband, Robert S. Miller, died in 1993.
Survivors include four sons, Roy Miller of Lee, Fla., Kevin Miller of Madison, Fla., Brian Miller of Johnstown, and Leonard Miller of Gloversville; three daughters, Judy Wendt of Crossville, Tenn., Freda Brothers of Dolgeville, and Anna Bentley of Johnstown; three sisters, Lila Mosher of Little Falls, Alberta Foley of Herkimer, and Vivian Hill of Ephratah; two brothers, Richard Anderson of Valois and Gerald Anderson of Little Falls; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, Main and Melcher streets, Johnstown..
Spring burial will be in Ephratah Cemetery.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnstown Lions Club or to the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society.

John Melita
February 6, 2000
John B. Melita, 87, formerly of Cayadutta Street, Johnstown, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after being stricken.
He was born in Albany and educated in Johnstown.
Mr. Melita was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was the owner of Melita's Gem Lab on Main Street in Johnstown from the early 1950s until 1975 when he retired.
Mr. Melita was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.
He was a member of the Johnstown VFW and the Sacandaga Swingers Square Dancing Club.
Survivors include a brother, Charles Melita of Keck Center; and three sisters, Maria Stack and Antonina M. Rindenello, both of Schenectady, and Josephine Marafiote of Fairlawn, N.J.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church.
Spring burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, Main and Melcher streets, Johnstown.

William Kania
February 7, 2000
William Kania, 98, formerly of Kania Road, Amsterdam, died Monday at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.
He was born in Galway, raised on the family farm, and attended Galway schools.
Mr. Kania operated the family farm for many years, after the death of his mother.
A craftsman, he was a skilled tree surgeon, grave digger, and long-time bus driver for the Galway school system.
Mr. Kania was a member of the West Galway Presbyterian Church.
There are no survivors.
The funeral is 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Sacandaga Road, Galway.
Interment will be in West Galway Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Galway Presbyterian Church.

Sadie Grzywienski
February 7, 2000
Sadie Grzywienski, 90, of Haskell Street, Hagaman, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital.
She was born Jan. 4, 1910, in the town of Florida, the daughter of Kostany and Frances Somak Kowalski. She was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
She was a twister at the former Mohawk Carpet Mills in Amsterdam before retiring in 1965.
She was a communicant of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Hagaman.
She married Zygmont "Ziggy" Grzywienski June 5, 1938. He died Feb. 9, 1996.
Survivors include two sisters, Lottie Stark of Hagaman and Winifred Francisco of the town of Florida; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 10 a.m. Thursday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, Hagaman.
Calling hours are 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Church or to the Hagaman Volunteer Fire Department.

Richard Halvey
February 6, 2000
Richard W. Halvey Sr., 68, of Green Street, Amsterdam, died Sunday evening at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 12, 1931, in Amsterdam, the son of James and Pearl Johnson Halvey. He was a 1949 graduate of St. Mary's Institute and was self-employed as a floor covering mechanic until retiring in 1986.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during the Korean War.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
Mr. Halvey was a member of Carpenters Union Local 370, Albany, and a charter member of the Irish-American Club of Amsterdam.
He married Assunta (Sue) Petrucelli Nov. 15, 1952.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include five sons, Richard Halvey Jr. of Aurora, Colo., William Halvey of Coconut Creek, Fla., Michael Halvey of Raleigh, N.C., Thomas Halvey of Las Vegas, Nev., and David Halvey of Amsterdam; two daughters, Susan Halvey of Amsterdam and Kathleen Halvey of Lakewood, Colo.; a brother, James P. Halvey Jr. of Amsterdam; 10 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, followed at 9:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson.
Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
