Antonio Compani
January 11, 2001
Antonio "Uncle Tony" Compani, 83, of East Main Street, Fonda, died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
He was born June 13, 1917, in Fonda, the son of Giovannina and Frank Compani. He attended Fonda schools and was a lifelong area resident.
He was an Army Air Forces veteran during World War II, serving as a staff sergeant in the 4111th AAF Base Unit.
Mr. Compani was a track supervisor for the New York Central Railroad and the Penn Central Railroad, which later became Amtrak, where he was in charge of the New York to Washington corridor. In the last few years, he was responsible for the High Speed Rail installation and maintenance of the High Speed Rail between New York and Washington, D.C., retiring from Amtrack in 1985. He later worked at the Fonda Fairgrounds.
He was a communicant of St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church in Fonda and was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701.
He married Carrie M. Zannitto Sept. 24, 1938.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, John Compani of Albany; a daughter, Carolyn M. Carpenter of Dover, Del.; a brother, Carmen Compani of Gloversville; four sisters, Rose Davis and Theresa Vallero, both of Gloversville, Julia Bell of Fonda and Philomena Musella of Schenectady; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral is 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Cecelia's Roman Catholic Church.
Burial is in St. Cecilia's Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and beginning again at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Cecilia's Church memorial fund.

Kathleen Sanders
January 11, 2001
Kathleen Deming Sanders, 85, of Wells House, Johnstown, formerly of Gloversville, died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
She was born in Northampton. She attended Northville schools and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a library assistant for the Gloversville Free Library for more than 25 years.
Mrs. Sanders was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gloversville and its Semper Fidelis class.
She was a member of the Tryon Doll Club.
She married Eseck Sanders Jan. 27, 1935. He died in 1999.
Survivors include four sons, David Sanders of Sebastian, Fla., Donald and Glen Sanders, both of Gloversville, and Daryl Sanders of Caroga Lake; three brothers, Malcolm Deming of Glen, Douglas Deming of Greenville, S.C., and Lawrence Deming of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Winifred McConnel of Greenville, S.C., and Joyce Carpenter of Easton, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 10 a.m. Monday at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.
Burial is in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Ronald Spooner
January 7, 2001
Ronald W. Spooner, 60 of 100 Charles Place, Amsterdam, died Sunday in Bryn Mawr, Pa., after a long illness.
He worked for St. Mary's Hospital for 15 years, retiring in 1999 due to illness.
Survivors include six children.
Cremation was by Liberty Crematorium, Philadelphia.
A memorial mass is scheduled at 9:45 a.m. Jan. 20 at Our Lady of Miraculous Metal Church, Blecker Street, Ridegewood.
Burial will be in New York City at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements were by the Ruffenach Funeral Parlor.

Josephine Vitale
January 12, 2001
Josephine Vitale, 94, formerly of Racecourse Street, Amsterdam, died this morning at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home.
Arrangements by the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam, are incomplete and will be announced.

Everett Heiser
January 12, 2001
Everett C. Heiser, 85, of Clinton Road, Canajoharie, died this morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Arrangements by the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie, are incomplete and will be announced.

The Rev. Martha Orr
January 10, 2001
The Rev. Martha Bolster Orr, 66, of Tazewell, Tenn., formerly of Speculator, died Wednesday at Claiborne County Hospital.
She was born in Glens Falls and was a graduate of the State University of New York at Cobleskill.
She was a bookkeeper for the Hamilton County treasurer for 27 years before retiring. She later worked part-time for the town of Lake Pleasant.
The Rev. Orr entered Wesley University Theological Studies at age 48. She was pastor of the Wells United Methodist Church, Wells, for 13 years until the onset of illness.
She was a youth leader, Sunday school teacher, choir leader, PTSA leader, and member of the Tazewell United Methodist Church at the time of her death.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Louis Orr; a son, Ralph Alan Orr of Prince George, Va.; two daughters, Nancy Lynne Hager of Tazewell and Frances Jean Allen of Fort Campbell, Ky.; three brothers, Edmond Bolster of Charlotte, N.C., and Ernest Bolster and Robert Bolster, both of Glens Falls; and four grandchildren.
The funeral is 4 p.m. Sunday at the Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St., Northville.
Burial is in Lake Pleasant Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Tazewell United Methodist Church, Tazewell, Tenn. 37879; or the Wells United Methodist Church, Main Street, Wells 12190.

Anna Skoda
January 10, 2001
Anna Skoda, 91, formerly of Oakwood Avenue, Johnstown, died Wednesday at Hyde Park Nursing Home after a long illness.
She was born in Piermont.
She was a glove maker for various glove companies.
Mrs. Skoda was a member of St. Anthony's Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Stephen Skoda, in 1984.
Survivors include a sister, Tilly C. Young of Poughkeepsie; and a brother, Anthony Sefcovic of Tarpon Springs, Fla.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Church.
Burial is in St. Anthony's Cemetery in the spring.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are by the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home.

Earl Califano
December 21, 2001
Earl Joseph Califano, 88, of Anaheim, Calif., died Dec. 21.
He was born in Amsterdam, the son of Anthony and Mary Grace Califano and lived in Anaheim for the past 15 years.
He was an insurance manager for the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Survivors include his wife, Stephanie Califano; a daughter, Sandra Pfeffer; a brother, Angelo Califano; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the San Antonio Church in Anaheim Hills.
Arrangements were by the Memory Garden Mortuary.

Elizabeth Wheeler
January 30, 2001
Elizabeth V. Wheeler, 93, of Hetcheltown Road, Glenville, died Tuesday at the Glendale Nursing Home following a long illness.
She was born in Rockingham, N.C., and lived on Academy Street in Amsterdam for a time.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Wheeler was a communicant of the First Reformed Church of Scotia.
She was past president and former member of the First Reformed Church Neighborhood Club, member of the Scotia-Glenville Gold and Silver Club, the Leisure Club, the Happy Travelers of the Gold and Silver Club, and a member of AARP.
She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Charles D. Wheeler, in 1972.
Survivors include a son, James V. Wheeler of Broadalbin; a daughter, Caroline W. Snyder of Schaghticoke; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at the White Funeral Home, 264 N. Ballston Ave., Scotia.
Burial is in Park Cemetery, Scotia.
A calling hour will precede the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society.

Nancy Twedt
February 1, 2001
Nancy E. Twedt, 65, of Route 30A, Central Bridge, died Thursday at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill after being stricken at home.
She was born in Middleburgh and lived in Sloansville and Middleburgh before moving to Central Bridge. She was a 1955 graduate of Middleburgh High School.
Mrs. Twedt worked at the former Westheimers Carrot Barn in Schoharie and the former Coleco Industries in Amsterdam. For the past several years, she was a child care provider in her own home.
She was a member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She was a Girl Scout leader in Central Bridge and bowled in the Women's League at the former Schoharie Lanes.
She married Casper J. Twedt in 1959.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Diane M. Spoor of Middleburgh; two sons, Ernest V. Twedt of Esperance and Eric O. Twedt of Cobleskill; two brothers, Ted Diamond of Middleburgh and Donald Diamond of Central Bridge; three sisters, Shirley Lawyer and Sandy Tiedemann, both of Middleburgh, and Pat Mango of Schenectady; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, Church Street, Central Bridge.
Burial is in the old section of Middleburgh Cemetery at a later date.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Langan Funeral Home, 21 N. Main St., Central Bridge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Bridge Fire Department Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 294, Central Bridge 12035.

Barbara Heaton
February 1, 2001
Barbara A. Heaton, 67, of Stratton Apartments, Amsterdam, died Thursday at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility following a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 16, 1933, in Amsterdam, the daughter of George and Sarah Norris Stangle. He was a 1950 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and a lifelong area resident.
She was a homemaker for many years before becoming a certified nursing assistant.
Mrs. Heaton was employed at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, retiring in 1995 after 20 years of service.
She was a former member of the Lion's Club in Amsterdam.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Heaton of Saratoga Springs and Jeffrey Heaton of Amsterdam; two daughters, Laurie Lawton and Mary Jo Schrader, both of Broadalbin; three brothers, Robert Stangle of Broadalbin, Richard Stangle of Selkirk and Edward Stangle of Glens Falls; five sisters, Jeannette Stangle of Broadalbin, Gertrude Natale and Elizabeth Grajewski, both of Fort Myers, Fla., Doris Karchesky of Amsterdam, and Mary Ester Nicholas of Lockport; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Cremation is at Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady.
A memorial service is scheduled at 3 p.m. Monday at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin, with the Rev. Dan Wheeler officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam or the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.
