Stanley Michalowski
August 27, 2001
Stanley "Stosh" Michalowski, 76, of Academy Street, Amsterdam, passed away Monday evening at Mount Loretto Nursing Home where he had been a resident since 1997.
Born in Amsterdam May 19, 1925, he was a son of George and Anna Michalowski. He attended the Rome School for the Deaf. After he graduated from school, he moved back to Amsterdam. He worked as a bartender at the former Schuyler Inn and enjoyed fishing on his time off.
He was of the Roman Catholic faith.
There are no known survivors.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Loretto Nursing Home, in care of the funeral home.

Rose Marie Reksc
August 16, 2001
Rose Marie Reksc, 66, formerly of Crane Street, Amsterdam, died Thursday afternoon at Montgomery Meadows Health Care Facility in Amsterdam.
Born in Ballston Spa on June 23, 1935, she was a daughter of Michael and Barbara Isabel Zappone. She grew up in the Ballston Spa area and attended Art and Music School there. She later moved to Amsterdam where she lived for many years. She had recently been a resident of the Wells House Nursing Home and Pine View Commons in Johnstown before Montgomery Meadows.
She was a homemaker. She married Julian F. Reksc in 1953. He passed away on Jan. 19, 1988.
Survivors include a sister, Barbara Helman of Ballston Spa; two nieces, Cindy Hogan and Billie Jo Helman, both of Ballston Spa; a greatniece, Falecia Hogan and cousins.
Her mother, Barbara Zappone, passed away on July 18, 2001.
Private calling hours and funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ballston Spa Ambulance Corps c/o the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, 12010.
Arrangements are by the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc.

Barney Spencer Jr.
August 17, 2001
Barney J. Spencer Jr., 80, of State Highway 29, Broadalbin, has gone home to be with his wife, Rose. He died on Friday evening at the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Gloversville on June 14, 1921, a son of Barney and Lillian Cole Spencer and was educated in local schools. Mr. Spencer was a lifelong area resident.
At one time, Mr. Spencer was employed at the leather mills in Gloversville. He later opened Barney's Farm Market on Route 29, which he and his late wife operated for over 40 years. Mr. Spencer was most appreciative of his loyal patrons and enjoyed visiting with all of them.
He was a World War II Army veteran and served in the cavalry in China, India and Burma.
Mr. Spencer was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and was a member of its Holy Name Society.
He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 337 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8690, both in Broadalbin.
He was married to the former Rose Demarest on Nov. 17, 1940. She died on June 5, 1998.
He survivors include two sons, Barney N. Spencer III and his wife, Luz, and Dean M. Spencer and his wife, Lynda, all of Broadalbin; two daughters, Joan Beacher of Tampa, Fla. and Carolyn Perez and her husband, Raul, of Broadalbin; five brothers, Harold Spencer of Lakeside, Calif., Carl Spencer of Friendsville, Pa., Charles Spencer of Syracuse, Russell Spencer of Hohenwald, Tenn. and George Spencer of Wells; two sisters, Irma Draffen of Northville and Blanche Hayes of Johnstown; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 West Main St., Broadalbin, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 2 North St., with the Rev. Timothy Mangan officiating.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A joint ritual will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Burial will take place at the Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Amsterdam Community Cancer Program in care of the funeral home.

Palmera Fontana

Mrs. Palmera M. Fontana, 94, formerly of the New Amsterdam Apts., died Friday evening at Montgomery Meadows.
Arrangements, by the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, are incomplete and will be announced.

Palmera M. Fontana. 94, formerly of the Hi-Rise Apartments, passed away Friday evening at Montgomery Meadows.
Born in Amsterdam on March 24, 1907, she was the daughter of Michael and Assumpta Mezzano Massone.
Mrs. Fontana received her education in the Amsterdam school system, and was employed by the Mohawk Carpet Company until her retirement in 1954.
She was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Amsterdam.
Mrs. Fontana was predeceased by her husband, Martin L. Fontana on June 30, 1974 and her daughter, Arlene Fontana Lavia on May 8, 1990.
Surviving are her son-in-law, Carmen Lavia of New York City; two nephews, John Hughes of Amsterdam, NY, and Robert Hughes of Fort Meyers, FL; two nieces, Mrs. Joseph (Rita) Tessitore and Mrs. Richard (Norma) Stellato both of Amsterdam, NY; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Angelo (Helen) Petruccione of Amsterdam, NY; several great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 8:30 o'clock at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division St., followed at 9:15 o'clock by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 58 Grove St., Amsterdam. Interment will be at St. Michael's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours are Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions in Mrs. Fontana's name may be made to St. Michael's Church, 58 Grove St., Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Mrs. Gladys Mae MacDougall
August 18, 2001
Mrs. Gladys Mae MacDougall, 92, formerly of Midline Road, Amsterdam, NY, died Saturday evening at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home in Amsterdam after being a resident for eight years.
Born October 15, 1908, in Amsterdam, NY, she was the daughter of John Henry and Gertrude Astill Male. She was a life long area resident.
She was employed as a Garment Turner, for the Montco Manufacturing in Amsterdam for a number of years, until retiring in 1974.
She was a member of the Perth Senior Citizens and a former member of St, Ann's Episcopal Church in Amsterdam.
Mrs. MacDougall was married in 1927, to Herbert A. MacDougall, who died in 1963. She was predeceased by a son Russell MacDougall who died in 1941.
She is survived by her loving children who include; a son Harold Arthur MacDougall, and a daughter Barbara Gean "Babe" McNamara both of Amsterdam, a devoted companion for over thirty years, Frank Coppola of Amsterdam, fourteen beloved grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, where the Office for the Burial of the Dead will be Read by the Rev. Christopher Smith, Rector of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Amsterdam. The burial will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery in Tribes Hill, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.

Hollis Blanchard Sr.
August 19, 2001
Hollis R. Blanchard Sr., 79, of the Town of Tonawanda, died Sunday, August 19, 2001, at the VA Medical Center in Buffalo following a lengthy illness.
Born in Indian Lake, he had been a resident of the Tonawandas for the past 47 years.
Mr. Blanchard was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and very much enjoyed woodcrafting.
He is survived by his wife, Etha E. (Cleveland) Blanchard; three children, Hollis R. (Julie) Blanchard Jr. of the City of Tonawanda, Clifford Blanchard of Stoney Creek and Roland (Pearl) Lemery of Broadalbin; three sisters, Erma Eldridge, Patricia McChesney and Gerry Joyce and one brother, Roger Blanchard, all of the Adirondacks. He is also survived by three special friends, Juan Rivera, Tiger Jackson and Murphy; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Neal and Stanley Blanchard.
There will be no prior visitation. Private burial will be in Indian Lake.
Arrangements are by John O. Roth Funeral Home Inc., Tonawanda.

Catherine M. Neuberger

Catherine M. Neuberger, 39, of Horstman Drive, Scotia, died Monday, August 20, 2001, in Germany after a long illness.
Cathy is survived by her loving husband, John W. Neuberger whom she married in 1983. She is also survived by her cherished children, John W. Neuberger III and Christina C. Neuberger, both of Scotia; her loving parents, Richard and Mary Jobin of Amsterdam; two devoted brothers, David Jobin and his wife, Anita, and Richard Jobin, all of Amsterdam; a devoted sister, Carol Mellon and her husband, Kevin, of Fultonville; her dear grandmother, Catherine Gallucci and her husband, Frank, of Australia; her mother-in-law, Elaine M. Bonanno Neuberger of Rotterdam; and her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Mylinski and her husband, Thomas, of Scotia.
Funeral arrangements, by the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Scotia, will be announced.
Memorial contributions in Cathy's name are requested to be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, N.Y. 12211 or to Ellis Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 1015, Schenectady, New York 12301-1015.

Debra Shang

Debra "Debbie" Shang, 44, of Voorhees Street, Amsterdam, passed away Tuesday evening at Montgomery Meadows after a brief illness.
Born in Amsterdam July 2, 1957, a daughter of Robert and Patricia Shults Shang, she was a lifelong area resident and attended Amsterdam schools.
She was employed at Hillcrest Spring Adult Home in Amsterdam and Amsterdam Printing Company. She last worked for The Recorder newspaper.
She was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
Survivors include her two brothers, William J. Shang of Galway and Robert Shang of Amsterdam; an aunt, Lorraine Voigt of Amsterdam, aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev.. Stanislaus Swierzowski officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.
The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service on Friday beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, in care of Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc.

Theodore V. Stone
August 22, 2001
Theodore V. Stone, 58, of Vedder Street, Amsterdam, died early Wednesday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 4, 1943 in Schenectady, the son of Raymond and Vera Knapp Stone. Mr. Stone was a lifelong area resident and attended locals schools.
He was employed by the former Weber Construction Company in Schenectady until working throughout the area as a self-employed carpenter.
He loved the Adirondacks and was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish and took part in many of the local fishing tournaments.
Survivors include his son, Jeffrey P. Stone Sr. and his daughter-in-law, Brenda, of Broadalbin; his daughter, Donna L. Waldvogel and son-in-law, Jeffrey, of Broadalbin; a brother, Raymond Stone Jr., of Duanesburg; two sisters, Dorothy Smith of Pattersonville and Ethel Zasa of Schenectady; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Jr., Nicole and Michael Stone, Amanda and Russell Gomula and Connie and Jeffrey "JJ" Waldvogel; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends Saturday from 1 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12206.

Mrs. Catherine Mae Babravich
August 23, 2001
Mrs. Catherine Mae Babravich, 73, of Lower Lepper Road, Fort Johnson, died Thursday morning at the St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, NY.
Born on September 5, 1927, in Corinth, NY, she was the daughter of Cletus and Gertrude Maue Sweeney. She attended schools in Corinth until moving to Schenectady where she graduated from Draper High School in 1944. She moved to the Amsterdam area in 1946 and has been a resident of Fort Johnson since 1948.
Mrs. Babravich was a Ward Secretary for St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam for twenty four years until retiring in 1992.
She was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Tribes Hill, NY and she was also a member of the church's Sacred Heart Rosary Society, the Sacred Heart Rosary Makers and the Circle of Prayer Group. She also spent time making quilts for AIDS babies.
Her beloved husband, John Anthony Babravich, whom she married on February 17, 1946, died April 13, 1992.
Survivors include her loving children; two sons: John Babravich of Fort Johnson, Richard and his wife Bonnie Babravich of Broadalbin, NY; and a daughter: Cleta J. and her husband Charles Niles of Johnstown, NY; her brother John Duffy of Clifton Park, NY, a grandson Richard John Babravich of Amsterdam; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
The funeral service will be held on Monday morning at 9:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be Celebrated at 10:00 am at the Sacred Heart Church in Tribes Hill, NY. The burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home. The Rosary Society will meet at 3:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the St. Mary's Foundation for the Emergency Room in care of the funeral home.
