Clara C. Ratynski
January 9, 2002
Mrs. Clara C. Ratynski, 81, of Clizbe Avenue died Wednesday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility.
Born on February 24, 1920 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Konieczna Spiewak.
Mrs. Ratynski attended Amsterdam Schools and was a lifelong area resident.
She at one time worked for the General Electric Company in Schenectady and later was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Church.
Mrs. Ratynski is survived by her husband of 57 years, Edward F. Ratynski whom she married on December 30, 1944; one son, Edward R. Ratynski and his wife Susan of Amsterdam; one daughter, Edwina Spagnola and her husband, Robert of Amsterdam; one brother, Stanley Spiewak of Winter Haven, Florida; five grandchildren, Michael Parillo, Jennifer Spagnola, Justin Ratynski and Rebecca Ratynski all of Amsterdam and Christopher Parillo of Alexandria, Virginia; one great grandson, Jordan Jackson of Amsterdam; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Ratynski is predeceased by two sons, John R. Ratynski and Jeffrey C. Ratynski.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 11:00 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be one hour prior to the services from 9:30 until 10:30 Friday morning. Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Ratynski memory to St. Mary's Church in care of the funeral home.

Margaret A. Pedrick Bougher
January 9, 2002
Mrs. Margaret A. Pedrick Bougher, 88, of Corbin Hill Rd., Sprakers NY, died Wednesday morning at St. Johnsville Nursing Home after a long illness.
Mrs. Pedrick Bougher was born September 19, 1913 in Schenectady the daughter of Ward and Ella Getman Beck.
She was educated in Johnstown Schools.
She served as Union President of the Glove Workers Union in Gloversville for five years until her retirement. She was previously employed for several years as a glove maker for the former Crescendo Glove Shop in Johnstown.
She was a resident of the area for most of her life, spending winters in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Mrs. Pedrick Bougher was of Protestant faith.
She was a life member of the Elks Club, B.P.O.E.#1557 in New Smyrna Beach, Fl. She was elected Elk Lady of the Year, 1984.
Survivors include: one daughter, Nita P. Bell of Town of Charleston; one son, Clayton W. Pedrick of Herkimer; one sister-in-law, Cora Beck of Ephratah; two special nieces, Patricia Symolon of Stone Arabia and Carolyn Goody of Ephratah and friend Esther Jones of New Smyrna Beach, Fl; twelve grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
An 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 14 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie with the Rev. R.W. Williams officiating.
Burial will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.
Calling hours will be 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 North Main St., Gloversville, NY 12078 in memory of Margaret Pedrick Bougher.

Flossie Wellman
January 7, 2002
Mrs. Flossie Wellman, 82, of Lynk St., Sprakers, NY died January 7, after a short illness at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.
She was born December 1, 1919 in Worcester, NY the daughter of Gilbert and Minnie Clapper Hicks.
Mrs. Wellman was educated in Jefferson Schools.
She was a mother and homemaker. She was formerly employed as an aide at Dawn Crest Nursing Home, Fultonville.
Mrs. Wellman had resided in Sprakers for 25 years. She previously resided in Palatine Bridge.
She was a member of Christian Church of Charleston Four Corners. She was baptized at the church on July 13, 1997. She was also a member of the Women's Bible Study Group of the church.
Mrs. Wellman married Leland A. Wellman on July 31, 1940 in Laurens, NY. He predeceased her on April 3, 1991.
She was also predeceased by three brothers: Howard Hicks, Edward Hicks and Elmer Hicks.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law; Charlotte and Donald Way of Fonda, Wanda and Primo Iacobucci of Sprakers, and Shirley Spagnuola and Edward Bebbe of Sprakers; two sons and daughters-in-law: Ronald and Patricia Wellman of Glen and Randy and Lorraine Wellman of Fonda; one brother and sister-in-law: Vincent and Anne Freeman of Sloansville; eighteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A 10:00 a.m. Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 11 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie with the Rev. Brett Popp and the Rev. Eric Handel co-officiating. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours are Thursday, January 10 from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christian Church of Charleston Four Corners, 1380 Lykers Rd., Sprakers, NY 12166 in memory of Mrs. Wellman.

Hazel I. Morris
January 8, 2002
Hazel I. Morris, 97, of Maple Avenue, Ballston Spa died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
She was born in Charlton, October 31, 1904. She was a seamstress and worked at the Ballston Knitting Mill and then for Van Raalt in Saratoga Springs and retired from the Ballston Dress Shop.
She was a member of Ballston Area Seniors.
She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years George Morris, her son George Morris, Jr., and her daughter Martha McCann.
Survivors include five grandchildren: Sue Hicks of Rexford, William McCann, Jr. of Brunswick, Ralph McCann of Scotia, Jean Carpenter of Charleston, and Terry Zemken of Glen; twelve great-grandchildren; one great great-granddaugher and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 8:00 p.m. Friday at Armer Funeral Home Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa. Spring burial will be in the Factory Village Cemetery in Ballston Spa.
Calling hours will be Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Glen Reformed Church, 1526 State Highway 161, Fultonville, NY 12072.

Rose M. Aleksa
January 9, 2002
Rose M. Aleksa, 77, of County Highway 107, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Amsterdam on October 4, 1924, a daughter of John and Katherine Kristonavicius Karuzas, she attended local schools and lived here all her life.
Mrs. Aleksa was employed as a secretary for General Electric Co, in Schenectady and later for the Perth Central School in the same capacity until she retired in 1986. She was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church and was member of it's Ladies Auxiliary and the Living Rosary Society of the church. Rose loved to knit and crochet and made many keepsakes for family and friends.
She is survived by her devoted husband Joseph, whom she married on August 29, 1953; two loving sons: Joseph A. and his wife Lynn Aleksa of Vienna W. Virginia; and Peter J. and his wife Sharon Aleksa of Dalton, Mass; her four grandchildren: Peter, Michael, Jocelyn and Joseph Aleksa; a brother: John Karuzas of Boynton Beach, Fla.; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services are Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Gut Park Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Casimir's Church with Fr. Stanley Swierzowski celebrant.
Interment will take place in St. Casimir's Cemetery. calling hours are Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home where St. Casimir's Ladies Auxiliary will conduct a Chaplet Service at 6:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to St. Casimir's Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.

William F. Conrad
January 9, 2002
Mr. William F. Conrad, 84, of Bayard Street, Amsterdam, died Wednesday afternoon at the Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany.
Born May 17, 1917 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Albert and Ann Nadler Conrad. He was a lifelong Amsterdam resident. In 1935 he graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Mr. Conrad was a US Army Veteran of World War II. His rank was T5 and he served with the US Army 9th Division. He was in the battle of North Africa, Algiers, Sicily, Normandy, France and the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Conrad was appointed to the Amsterdam Fire Department in 1945. He was promoted to chauffeur in 1947 and captain in 1955, retiring in 1978 at the rank of Captain and thirty-three years of service.
He was a member of Welcome Lodge #829 F.& A.M. for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Perth Seniors, Inman Center, and Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Amsterdam.
Mr. Conrad enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved to go trout fishing in Canada.
He was married on June 1, 1946 to Doris Greene Conrad. Besides his wife he is survived by a son; David A. Conrad and wife Barbara of Fort Johnson, Lorin R. Conrad of Summerset, NJ; two grandchildren; Julie Fenton and Jaime Conrad of Amsterdam; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave. with the Rev. William Siiss officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The Masons from Welcome Lodge #829 will conduct a service at 6:30 p.m. that evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 40 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY 12010

Eugene R. Cornell Jr.
January 8, 2002
Eugene R. Cornell Jr., 76, of East Street, Galway (Regency Estates). died Tuesday at his home after a short illness.
Mr. Cornell was born September 18, 1925 in Amsterdam, New York. He resided in Galway all of his life and was educated in the Galway School system. He was an avid reader.
He worked for General Electric, Schenectady, NY for 35 years as a test operator in microwave tubes, retiring in 1985. He proudly served as a Technical Sergeant in the Army during the second World War.
Mr. Cornell was an active member of the Galway United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Galway Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Millington Cornell whom he married in Galway on September 19, 1953; one daughter: Pamela Neahr, of Galway; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Brett and Kyle Neahr, all of Galway; one brother: Harold Cornell, of Austin, Texas; one sister: Jeannine Butler, of Schenectady; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Sacandaga Road, Galway Village. Friends are welcome to call Friday evening 6 to 8 p.m. at the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Galway.
A Spring burial will be held at the Galway Cemetery.
The family suggests donations be made to the Community Hospice of Saratoga.
Arrangements are by the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Inc., Sacandaga Road, Galway, New York.

Clarence A. Gasner
January 9, 2002
Clarence A. Gasner, 88, formerly of Old State Road, Broadalbin died Wednesday afternoon at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility.
He was born in the town of Mayfield on October 25, 1913 a son of Archie and Mary Johnston Gasner and attended schools in Munsonville. In 1927 he moved to Broadalbin and continued his education. Mr. Gasner was a lifelong area resident.
At one time, he worked on the family farm in Broadalbin. He later operated his own dairy farm in Union Mills for several years.
Mr. Gasner was a member of the Broadalbin United Methodist Church.
He was married to the former Florence Marcus Gasner on October 21, 1934. She died on October 6, 1983.
He was also predeceased by a brother George Gasner.
Survivors include five brothers: Burt Gasner, John Gasner, and Clayton Gasner, all of Broadalbin, James Gasner of Amsterdam, and Thomas Gasner of Hagaman, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 38 West Main Street, Broadalbin with the Rev. Dr. Patricia A. Bush officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-7 p.m. Spring burial will be in the Union Mills Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, or to the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps, in care of the funeral home.

Esther Marsh Luther
January 10, 2002
Mrs. Esther Marsh Luther, 81, of Clarke Ave., Fort Plain, died early Thursday morning at home.
She was born September 4, 1920 in Beekmantown, NY, the daughter of Fred D. and Lina Rea Marsh.
Mrs. Luther graduated from Plattsburgh High School. She graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a B.S. in Elementary Education.
Mrs. Luther was a kindergarten teacher for Canajoharie Central School District. Prior to that, she taught in Rupert, Vermont.
She was a life long area resident.
Mrs. Luther was a member of St. John's & St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Canajoharie. She was a former member of Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, serving as treasurer and a dispatcher, and a former member of the Colonial Club of Canajoharie.
She married Charles D. Luther on July 9, 1943 in Rock City Falls, NY.
Mrs. Luther was predeceased by one son: Fred Charles Luther and one brother: Herbert Marsh.
Survivors include her husband Charles D. Luther of Fort Plain; two daughters and sons-in-law: Rea L and Lawrence Bishop of Cicero and Virginia L. and Dietmar Jaeck of Hartwick, NY; one sister: Virginia M. Wormood of Plattsburgh, NY; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephews.
A private Graveside Service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery in the spring. There are no calling hours. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, PO Box 126, Canajoharie, NY 13317 in memory of Mrs. Luther.
Arrangements are made by Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, NY.

Salvatore Nicosia
January 9, 2002
Salvatore Nicosia, 87, of Tracy, CA died Wednesday at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital. He has been a resident of Tracy for the past 12 years prior he resided in San Jose, CA.
He was born March 13, 1914 in New York, NY.
Mr. Nicosia was a retired machinist from Lockheed Aerospace.
He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. He was a Tinker and a Mr. Fixit. He even built his own house. He loved his family times especially his grandchildren.
Mr. Nicosia is survived by his wife Mary of 62 years; his children: Anthony and Kathryn Nicosia of Menlo Park, CA and Salvatore and Karen of Tracy, CA; five grandchildren: Steven Nicosia and Michael Nicosia of Tracy, Mary Teresa Cater of Sacramento, Tina Louise Meyer of San Jose and Tammi Nicosia of San Mateo; seven great-grandchildren; and also siblings: Benedetto Nicosia, Tiny Orapello, Bessie Fiorello, Josephine Hassfurter and Charlie Vassi all of Amsterdam.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 17 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave., Tracy, CA 975376. Interment will be in Santa Cara Mission Cemetery, 490 Lincoln Ave, Santa Clara, CA.

Virginia M. Cannizzaro
January 12, 2002
Virginia M. Cannizzaro, 78, of Division Street, passed away Saturday evening at St. Mary's Hospital. She had been staying with her daughter for the past several months.
Born in Amsterdam on August 19, 1923, a daughter of Peter and Catherine Belive Capel. She was a 1941 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Mrs. Cannizzaro was a homemaker and active in the Mohawk Valley Italian American War Veterans Auxiliary where she served as past president and currently treasurer. She was also past president of the New York State Italian American Veterans Auxiliary. She was a communicant Of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, and was past president of it's Altar Rosary Society. Virginia was a dedicated member of the Liberty Association Residential Committee.
Her beloved husband Salvatore "Sam" Cannizzaro, whom she married April 21, 1946 preceded her in death in 1999.
Her loving family includes her sons: Michael and his wife Debi Cannizzaro of Sewell, NJ, and Steven Cannizzaro of Palatine Bridge; her daughter: Marie and her husband Gary Kwiatkowski of Jamison, PA; two brothers: Peter and Ben Capel of Amsterdam; five grandchildren: Shelly Sykes-Hershowitz, Michael and Christopher Cannizzaro, Jason and Erin Kwiatkowski; five great-grandchildren: Kate and Rachel Sykes, Zayne and Isabelle Cannizzaro and Karlee Kwiatkowski; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services are Saturday at 8:15 a.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church. Interment is in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. It is the request of the family that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Liberty Association in care of the funeral home.
