Dr. Richard D. Kearns, age 83, of Broadalbin, NY, died suddenly Tuesday, January 27, 2002 at Hilton Head Medical Center, Hilton Head, SC.
He was born February 8, 1918 in Little Falls, NY, the son of John and Margaret Shanley Kearns. He was educated in Fonda schools, and was a 1936 graduate of Johnstown High School. He then attended Georgetown University, and transferred to Union College where he graduated in 1940. He graduated from Albany Medical College in 1944, and served his internship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City in 1945.
Dr. Kearns served two years in the Pacific Theater as a Captain and orthopedic surgeon in the US Army Medical Corps during WWII. He received the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the Word War II Victory Medal.
He returned to Fulton county after the war, serving as resident physician at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville for six months. In 1947 he opened his private practice in Broadalbin where he practiced general medicine for 38 years until his retirement in 1985. In 1949 Governor Thomas E. Dewey appointed Dr. Kearns a Fulton County Coroner, a position he held for 15 years. He received citations for his service in that capacity from Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson and Nixon.
Dr. Kearns had been a member of the medical staffs at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam. He was also a member of the American Medical Association, the Fulton County Medical Society, the State Medical Society, the Health Officers Association, and the School Physicians Association. He was a former member of the Broadalbin Rotary Club, the Antlers Country Club of Amsterdam, and the Pine Brook Golf Club of Gloversville.
On April 4, 1970 he married Grace Leszczynski who survives. He is also survived by his daughters Pamela Terlaak Poot and Ingrid Petoff of Broadalbin, Shanley Murray of Schenectady, Claudia P. Kearns of Basking Ridge, NJ, Marion Marcel Bangert of Beverly, MA: and his son John J. Kearns of Broadalbin; 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers John Kearns and Robert Kearns, and his sisters Margaret Brownell, Edna Sturm, and Rose Christman.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 W. Main Street, Broadalbin. A private Funeral Service will be held Saturday at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in the spring at Broadalbin Mayfield Rural Cemetery, Broadalbin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin Kennyetto Fire Company Inc., PO Box 295, Broadalbin, or the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps., PO Box 23, Broadalbin, NY 12025 or to the charity of your choice.
Derah E. Warrick

Derah E. Warrick, infant daughter of Shawn and Katrina Warrick, died Monday, January 28, 2002 at Albany Medical Center. She was born at St. Clare's Hospital on December 18, 2001.
Derah is the sister of Cassandra and Ashley Warrick. She is the granddaughter of Paul and Deborah Dietrich of Amsterdam, Theresa Steele of Scotia and Marty Warrick of Clifton Park. Great granddaughter of Wanda and Leonard Wells of Johnstown, James Fake of Rotterdam, Francis and Doris Warrick of Clifton Park.
A Mass of the Angels will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church, Schenectady. Calling hours will be Saturday morning from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rte 155-South of Central Ave.). Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Schenectady.
Lawrence D. Jones

Lawrence D. (Larry, Bud) Jones, 75, of Ridge Road, Scotia passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 after a long illness.
Mr. Jones was a graduate of Hudson High, Hudson, NY. He was a WWII veteran serving in the United States Navy.
He was a Master Plumber in the area for many years and a member of the Steamfitters Union. In 1964 he founded Ridgevue Plumbing and Heating, retiring in 1996.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Centre Glenville United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Guan Ho-Ha Fish and Game Club and the Scotia Lions Club. He was an avid boater first on the Hudson River and then on the Great Sacandaga. He was the Captain of The Summer Fun.
He leaves his wife Irene E. Shaw Jones whom he married May 29, 1948; his three sons, Douglas L. and Mark C. both of Scotia, Todd A. of Canajoharie, and one daughter Ellen I. of Galway, daughter-in-law Louise Moyer Jones of Canajoharie and one grandson Grant Lawrence Jones of Canajoharie. He is also survived by one sister, Ruth Barber of Hudson, NY. He is predeceased by three brothers. Several nieces, nephews and many friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at the Centre Glenville United Methodist Church, Bolt Rd., Scotia, NY. Calling hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday evening February 4, 2002 at the Glenville Funeral Home, Glenville, NY. Burial will be in the Barkersville Cemetery, Barkersville, NY in the Shaw family plot.
Donations in Mr. Jones memory may be made to the Centre Glenville United Methodist Church, Bolt Road, Scotia, NY 12302.
Margaret V. Ryan
January 29, 2002
Margaret V. Ryan, age 86, of Saint Petersburg, Florida, formerly of Amsterdam, New York, died Tuesday, January 29, 2002 at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute in St. Petersburg. Born in Amsterdam, she retired from Amsterdam Printing Company and moved to Florida in 1973. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
She is survived by one son, Lawrence of Schenectady, NY, three daughters; Peggy Baron of New Port Richey, FL, Linda Piurek of Amsterdam, NY, Susan Kaminsky of Austin, Texas; one brother; John Vidulich of St. Petersburg, FL; two sisters, Ida Vidulich of St. Petersburg, FL and Virginia O'Brien of Saratoga, NY; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Her husband Thomas predeceased her on June 3, 1983.
Arrangements by Faupel Funeral Home, Port Richey, Florida. Intement will be in St. Jospeh's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Angelina Fondacaro
January 28, 2002
Angelina Fondacaro, 94, of Mirimar, Florida, passed away Monday, January 28. Angelina was born in Amsterdam, New York and moved with her family in 1958 to South Florida.
She is survived by her daughter, Dolores Hermann, grandsons; Gary Conti (Nina) and Kevin Conti (Relles); seven great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren; a brother Vincent Gentile all of Florida and a sister Marie Turrisi of Amsterdam.
Funeral services were held in Hollywood, Florida.
Melvin J. Dwyer
January 30, 2002
Mr. Melvin J. Dwyer, 82, of Esperance Road, Esperance, died Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at home, after a long illness.
He was born November 6, 1919 in Johnstown. the son of Francis T. and Amelia Stryker Dwyer.
Mr. Dwyer attended Johnstown Schools and served in the United States Navy from 1938 - 1940.
He was employed as a diesel mechanic at the former Coleco in Mayfield until his retirement in 1985.
Survivors include his wife Rose Smrtic Dwyer whom he married December 1, 1940. Ten children John, Richard, Benjie and Joan Dwyer all of Johnstown. Jane, Louis and Matthew Dwyer all of Esperance. Rose Ann Dwyer, Sandra Cromling and Terri McClarren all of Broadalbin. Two brothers Charles Dwyer of Johnstown, Paul Dwyer of Gloversville. Three sisters Genevieve Pileggi of Florida, Marion Hansen of Tribes Hill, and Betty Tyrell of Gloversville. 30 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two brothers Francis T. Dwyer and Richard Dwyer. Two sisters Anna Marie Calandrelli and Mildred Russo.
There will be no funeral service or calling hours.
Cremation will be in Vale Crematory, Schenectady.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Oneonta, New York.
Arrangements are by the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown, New York.
Marie Agnes (Mabee, Abele) Hamm
January 5, 2002
Marie Agnes (Mabee, Abele) Hamm, 81, of Wittman, Arizona, passed away unexpectedly on January 5, 2002 in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Burial was in the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix.
She was born on October 18, 1920 in Amsterdam. New York. Daughter of the late William Mabee and the Late Frances (Bojanowski) Mabee of Providence, New York.
Marie was a graduate of Amsterdam High School and later attended art school in New York City. While in New York she worked at Macy's Department Store and enjoyed helping with the Macy's parade. She married Harold Abele and was a homemaker and 4-H leader for many years as she raised her children. After Harold's death she worked at Sears in Colonie Center and Lawless Container Corp.. in Scotia. She then won a scholarship to Hannah Harrison School in Washington, DC. Upon her graduation, she became the executive housekeeper at Trenton State College in New Jersey where she worked until her retirement. After her retirement she moved to California and married Clarence Hamm. They moved to Phoenix and finally to Wittman where Clarence was the pastor of the Chaparral Missionary Baptist Church. Marie enjoyed her home in the country and her cactus garden. She had just celebrated her 10th anniversary and had a full ceremony to renew her wedding vows in December.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Harold Francis Abele of Schenectady, her sister Alice LaBombard of Montana, her brother James Mabee of Texas, and her nephew Chester Kowalski of Florida.
She is survived by her husband, the Pastor Clarence C. Hamm of Wittman, Arizona, daughter Christine Meinhold and son-in-law William Meinhold of Schenectady, daughter Marilyn Abele of Gloversville and son Timothy Abele of Saratoga. She is also survived by her granddaughters; Victoria Aquilone of Bedford, Texas, Tammy Micken of Broadalbin, and Jessie Abele of Saratoga. Her grandsons are; Raymond and Nelson Brownell of Galway, Carl Salmon of Bennington, Vermont, and William Abele of Saratoga. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and friends across the country.
"We will miss the love and comfort you gave us all as well as your adventurous spirit and appreciation of life. You will always be in our hearts and will be with us on all the paths of our lives."
Mabelle Walker

Mabelle Hojohn Walker, 86, of Bunn Street, Amsterdam, passed away Friday at her home.
Born in Randall, on June 26, 1915, she was a daughter of Charles and Blanche Brown Bryant. She attended Fort Hunter School and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a homemaker and of the Protestant faith.
Her husband, Ronald Walker, predeceased her, along with two sons, Charles Hojohn and Phillip Bruce Hojohn.
Survivors include three sons, Daniel Hojohn and Wayne Hojohn, both of Rotterdam and Harry Hojohn of Denver, Colo.; four daughters, Beverley Hazzard of Gloversville, Danine Christman of Amsterdam, Helen Voekler of Glen and Valerie Hojohn of Simi Valley, Calif. and a sister, Jean Pershlak of California. Many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren also survive.
Cremation will take place in Vale Cemetery Crematorium, Schenectady. Private burial of remains will take place in the spring in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, 12010.
Rita Pikor

Rita Belanger Pikor, 90, of the Stratton Apartments, Amsterdam, passed away Friday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born in Worcester, Mass. on Aug. 2, 1911, she was a daughter of George and Nellie Hedge Belanger. She moved to Amsterdam in 1920. She attended Amsterdam schools and St. Mary's Institute.
Mrs. Pikor was employed as a packer for the Eddy Brush Co., Amsterdam, and also worked at the Bigelow Sanford Carpet Mills. She was an avid bowler and bowled in several leagues in the area.
She was a communicant of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, Hagaman. She was a member of the Perth Senior Citizens, Northway Mobile Home Club and an honorary member of St. Stephen's Church Altar Rosary Society.
She married Albert P. Pikor on Feb. 2, 1930; he passed away on Dec. 12, 1980.
Survivors include a son, Charles Pikor and his wife, Carrie, of Broadalbin; a brother, Adelard Belanger of Amsterdam; a sister, Gertrude Persico of Amsterdam; a grandson, Stephen Pikor of Broadalbin; several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, Hagaman. Spring interment will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to St. Stephen's Church Memorial Fund in care of Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc.

Caroline Kaufman

Mrs. Caroline Kaufman, 84, formerly of Union Street, Amsterdam, died Saturday afternoon at the Montgomery Meadows, Amsterdam.
Born on July 14, 1917 in Johnstown, Pa., she was a daughter of Frances and Anthony Drzal. She lived most of her life in Amsterdam and attended Amsterdam schools.
She was a homemaker and was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
Mrs. Kaufman was married on Nov. 28, 1936 to Stephen Kaufman, who died on May 15, 1984. She was also predeceased by a son, Edward J. Kaufman, who died April 12, 2000.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 8 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Church in care of the funeral home.
Leona Frey
January 28, 2002
Leona B. Frey, 82, formerly of Sunset Road, Amsterdam, passed away Monday at her daughter's home in Novato, Calif.
Born in Aug. 24, 1919 in Allport, Pa., she was a daughter of George Washington and Mary L. McDonald Swisher. She graduated high school in Elmira and later received her B.S. degree in Business from Russell Sage College, Albany.
She moved to Amsterdam in 1940 and remained there until moving to California in August of 2000.
She was employed for over 35 years by Montgomery County as a supervisor in the Social Services Dept.
She was a member of the American Red Cross. She was past president of the NYS Chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Organization. Mrs. Frey was an emergency medical technician with the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps for 16 years. She was also a member of the Inman Senior Citizens Center in Amsterdam and provided tax preparation services for seniors.
She was predeceased by her husband, Carl H. Frey, whom she married on June 29, 1953.
Survivors include two daughters, Colleen Rose of Novato, Calif. and Linda Holt of Broadalbin; three grandchildren, Christian D. Rose of San Rafael, Calif., Scott Holt and Anne Dickson, both of Broadalbin; two step sons, Arthur C. Frey of San Jose, Calif. and William Frey of Amsterdam; a brother, Orvis Swisher of Beaver Dams; a best friend, Eva Swisher of Beaver Dams and several great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Grace and brothers, Chester, Clarence and Lloyd.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Cranesville Reformed Church, Cranesville, with the Rev. Jacob Marvel officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 11, Amsterdam, 12010 or to the Cranesville Reformed Church, 105 Cranes Hollow Road, Amsterdam, 12010.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
