Louise A. Carbone Petrosino
February 25, 2002
Louise A. Carbone Petrosino, 82, formerly of Division Street, Amsterdam, NY passed away Monday at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Mount Airy, Maryland after a long illness.
A Prayer Service was held at the nursing home upon her death by Father Peter J. Sweeney of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Damascus, Maryland.
Born in Fort Johnson, NY on April 6, 1919 a daughter of Luigi and Maria Grazia Vertucci Carbone. She was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Mrs. Petrosino was the owner and operator of the former Louise's Bridal Shoppe in Amsterdam from 1963 to 1971. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. She was a member of St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary also in Amsterdam.
She married John M. Petrosino on September 24, 1939 at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. He passed away on March 14, 1970.
Survivors include one son, Joseph J. Petrosino and his wife Marcia of Damascus, MD; three daughters, Victoria P. Sollecito and husband John of Amsterdam, NY, Mary Jane Mancini and husband Albert of Amsterdam, NY and Nancy Emmanuele and husband Raymond of South Carolina; one brother John Carbone of Scotia, NY; two sisters, Catherine Swierzowski of Tribes Hill, NY and Florence Warren of Amsterdam; 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Howie and Rose Guynup.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam with Father James Gulley as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association of NY, 85 Watervliet Avenue, Albany, NY 12206 or to the Adult Day Care program at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, 50 Route 30 North, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Mildred K. Nicholas

Mrs. Mildred K. Nicholas, 87, formerly of Rotterdam Junction, NY, resident of McQueen Road since 1992, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born February 15, 1915, in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Charles and Maude VanHorn Kane. She lived most of her life in Rotterdam Junction and attended Woestina Schools.
She was employed by Grant's in Schenectady and later Liggiero's Market in Rotterdam Junction until retiring a number of years ago.
Mrs. Nicholas loved to read mysteries and enjoyed feeding her birds outside her home. She loved the outdoors, camping and especially the times spent at Piseco Lake with her family.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rotterdam Junction.
Mrs. Nicholas was married on August 28, 1937, to Edward W. Nicholas who died May 9, 1995.
She is survived by her loving family; Nancy Wainwright of Scotia, NY and Sally Hemstreet of Perth, NY; a sister Lucella Howitt of Beland, FL; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Wainwright, Timothy Wainwright, Tracey Hemstreet Faulds and Tricia Hemstreet Terleckey; eight great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev. Cal Briggs-Harris officiating. There will be a private Legacy Candle Ceremony held on Wednesday. There will be no calling hours. Cremation will be in Vale Crematory, Schenectady.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Foundation of St. Mary's Hospital, 427 Guy Park Avenue, P.O. Box 91, Fort Johnson, NY 12010 or to the Johnstown Public lLibrary, 38 South Market Street, Johnstown, NY 12095.

Robert J. Frazier

Mr. Robert J. Frazier, 63, of James Street, Amsterdam passed away Monday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, after being stricken at home.
He was born on November 18, 1938 the son of Joseph and Alice Altieri Frazier. He was a lifelong area resident and was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School class of 1956.
Mr. Frazier was the owner and operator of Page One Graphics in Schenectady for many years.
He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
Survivors include his wife, Clorinda Zumbolo Frazier whom he married on April 9, 1961; his mother Alice Altieri Frazier Chiricko of Amsterdam; a son Joseph G. Frazier and his wife Jeanette of Gasport, NY; two daughters Roberta L. Cira and her husband Kori of Clayton, NC, and Anita L. Newell and her husband Bruce of Wilmington, NY; a sister Maryann Haskell and her husband Roger of Glenville, NY; 11 grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam. The burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to a charity of one's choice.

Ernestine Gilda Wood

Mrs. Ernestine Gilda Wood, 74, of Lincoln Avenue, died Monday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born May 15, 1927 in Broadalbin, NY, she was the daughter of Aaron and Alice E. Kissinger VanDerSluys. In 1945 she graduated from Broadalbin High School and moved from Broadalbin to Amsterdam twenty two years ago.
She was employed as a hairdresser in Broadalbin for a short time before working twenty five years, until retiring in 1976.
Mrs. wood was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Amsterdam, the church's Women Christian Service Circle and choir. She was also a former member of the Broadalbin Methodist Choir, St. Lukes Evangelical Lutheran Church Choir and Mohawk Valley Chorus.
She loved music and enjoyed people a great deal.
Mrs. Wood is survived by her loving family; a daughter, Claudia G. Stack of Amsterdam; two sisters, Beverly J. VanDerSluys and Retha Danylee both of Amsterdam; two grandchildren, Daniel Richard Stack and Jason Andrew Stack; a great grandson, Kieran; and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 42 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, with the Rev. William E. Siiss officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A Legacy Candle Ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. that evening.
Flowers are acceptable, however those desiring may make memorial contributions in her memory to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 42 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Patrick A. Leonetti
February 25, 2002
Patrick A. Leonetti, 82, of State Hwy 67, passed away Monday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital after being stricken at home.
Born in Amsterdam on April 13, 1919, a son of Charles and Madeline Guiffre Leonetti, he was a lifelong resident and attended local schools.
Mr. Leonetti served with the Us Army from 1940 to 1945, in Europe and Cairo in the Middle Eastern Campaign. He was employed for the city of Amsterdam Recreation Department as groundskeeper for many years. Later, he was employed as a security guard for Wackenhut Corp. until his retirement. Pat's favorite pastime was cooking for his family, neighbors and friends.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife, the former Ann Swiatecka whom he married on July 3, 1946. Together they enjoyed fifty-five years.
His loving daughter Madeline and her husband Jim Bottisti of Broadalbin; grandsons: Michael and Stephen Furman; brother, Vito DiSalvi of Amsterdam; sisters: Lucy DiSalvi and Anna Marie Cox both of Albany; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
He was predeceased by a sister: Jennie Meyers of Gloversville.
Services are Thursday at 9:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Interment is in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 5-8 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps, PO Box 11, Amsterdam.

Howard D'Arcangelis
February 13, 2002
Howard J. D'Arcangelis, 58, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at Albany Medical Center Hospital, surrounded by his entire family and many friends.
Born in Fort Plain, NY, he was a graduate of Siena College in Loudonville and received a master's degree in English from the State University at Albany. He was an English teacher at Bethlehem Central Middle School for 33 years retiring last January. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Otesaga (Leatherstocking) Golf Club in Cooperstown where he enjoyed playing with friends and family. His hobbies also included carpentry, gardening, reading and bowling.
He was predeceased by his father Chancy Anthony D'Arcangelis.
Survivors include his mother Caroline; his loving and devoted wife of 34 years AnnMarie Dardani D'Arcangelis; his daughters, Lisa Natalie and her husband Carmen and their children, Lorenzo Anthony and Giovanni Rose of Ravena, Teresa D'Arcangelis and her husband, Dan Lappies of Coxsackie, Valerie Galante and her husband, Peter of Coxsackie; son, Antonio of Coxsackie; brothers Edward of Stamford, CT, Raymond and his wife, Linda of Mariaville and Chancy of Latham; sisters, Jeannie and her husband John of Schroon Lake, Annette and her husband, Frank of Groton, CT, Mary Anne and husband, Gary of Albuquerque, NM and Carol Lynne of Toronto, Ontario. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Services were held at St. Mary's Church in Coxsackie with Fr. J. Moyna, pastor officiating. Interment was in the family plot of the St. Mary's Cemetery in Coxsackie.
Contributions in Howard's memory may be made to The Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation (PKD Foundation) at 4901 Main Street, Suite 200, Kansas City, MO 64112-2634 or to The Coxsackie Rescue Squad.

Robert W. Casler

Robert W. Casler, 74 of 93 Old Meadow Road, St. Johnsville, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2002 at his home.
He was born January 1, 1928 in the Town of St. Johnsville the son of the late Vernon and Edith (Smith) Casler. Robert was educated in St. Johnsville schools and was a lifelong resident of the St. Johnsville area.
For many years Robert was employed at Beech-Nut in Canajoharie.
Mr. Casler was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his cousins; Harlin Smith of St. Johnsville, Frances (Smith) Shuster of Dolgeville, and Frank and Norma Smith of Caroga Lake, and many second cousins and friends.
Graveside services will be held in the spring at West St. Johnsville Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, St. Johnsville.

Claudio Barrera Sr.
February 24, 2002
Claudio Barrera Sr., 71, of Schenectady, died Sunday, February 24, 2002 at Hallmark Nursing Home in Schenectady. Mr. Barrera was born in Ibor, Florida, grew up in New York City and had been an Albany area resident for fifty years.
He had worked as a well driller for Hall and Company in Delmar for thirty years, retiring in 1991.
Claudio was a bird enthusiast and raised parakeets and homing pigeons.
He is survived by his wife of fifty one years, Lillian G. Barrera. He is the beloved father of Claudio Barrera Jr. and his wife Kerry of Saratoga, Michael Barrera and his wife Kathy, David Barrera all of of Phoenix, AZ. Anthony Barrera and his wife Terri of Niskayuna, Deborah Mullins and her husband Eugene, Lawrence Barrera and Stephen Barrera all of Colonie. Brother of Carlos Barrera, Carmen Gatto, America Barrera, Ralph Barrera and his wife Yolanda, Linda Slosak and her husband Daniel, and the late Martin and Armando Barrera. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.).
Funeral services will be private. Interment will be in Memory's Garden.

John J. Gurren Sr.
February 23, 2002
John Joseph Gurren Sr., died suddenly on February 23, 2002. Born in Albany, he was the son of Walter J. and Eleanor Gurren, Sr.
John was employed as an inspector for many years with General Electric Co. in Schenectady. More recently, he owned and operated J.G. Computers.
Mr. Gurren was a member of the Local Order of Moose #1185 in Johnstown and a member of Parents Without Partners.
He is survived by his son, John J. Gurren, Jr. and a daughter, Christy A. Gurren. He is the brother of Anne Grant, Walter J. Gurren, Jr., Margaret Backstrom and Mary Gurren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.). Calling hours will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice in memory of John J. Gurren, Sr.

Edward Michael Matus
February 23, 2002
Edward Michael "Edjo" Matus, 77, of St. Johnsville passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2002 at his home.
He was born in St. Johnsville on August 6, 1924, the son of the late Joseph and Katherine (Pasieka) Matuszewski. Edward attended St. Johnsville High School, a graduate of the class of 1941.
On January 21, 1950 Edward was joined in holy matrimony to the former Evelyn Ouderkirk of St. Johnsville.
Edward is survived by his wife Evelyn, daughters; Michal Ann Rizzo and husband Joseph of Oneonta, and Patricia Jean Meyers of Utica. He is also survived by three grandchildren; Joseph Edward Rizzo, Nicola Katherine Rizzo and Roy Edward Meyers. He was predeceased by three brothers; Frank Matus, Thaddeus Matus and Stanley Matuszewski.
Mr. Matus was a retired Postmaster of St. Johnsville, NY, having been the only postmaster to attain permanent status in this office. He was nominated to this position by President Lyndon Baines Johnson and confirmed by the U.S. Senator Samuel Stratton.
Edjo, also know as "Big Train" was a well-known athlete in his youth. He played for various baseball teams in the area and was a former pitcher for the New York Giants' Farm Team, being signed in 1947.
Edward Matus was a veteran of World War 11, serving in Europe. He was a veteran of Normandy and Northern France Campaign. He was wounded in action and spent over a year in the hospital recovering from his injuries. His decorations include Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, European, African, Middle East Campaign medals with two major battle stars, a Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the NYS Conspicuous Service Cross. He was especially proud of the recent recognition by the French Government and the New York State Senate to all World War II veterans who fought on French soil. Medals were given to each veteran for fighting and defending French soil.
Mr. Matus was a member and past commander of the Starr-Colorito VFW, Morris J. Edwards American Legion, Post #168, Earl Stock Post 3275 VFW, a charter member of the Battle of Normandy Foundation, the 101st Airborne Association, Static Line Association Airborne, Military order of the Purple Heart #130 in Herkimer, lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Post #162 in Herkimer, and the National Commanders Colonel DAV club.
A Memorial Mass of Resurrection will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in St. Johnsville. The family will be receiving friends and relatives immediately following the services at the church hall. Interment will take place in St. Johnsville Cemetery in the spring. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, St. Johnsville, NY. In lieu of flowers, all memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Plain Animal Hospital, 13 River Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339.
Edward Matus will be remembered as a very loving father and mentor. He was always there whenever they needed him. His daughters were the light of his life, as were his three grandchildren whom he showered with love. They will miss him terribly. Dad, Grandpa we love you.
