Angelina Ferrari
April 24, 2002
Angelina Ferrari, 78, of Grieme Avenue, died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam on December 17, 1923, she was the daughter of Augusto and Mary Rose Martini Ferrari.
Miss Ferrari was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School and was a life-long city resident.
She was employed as a seamstress with several area garment manufacturers, retiring in 1985.
She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church and was a former member of St. Rita's Sodality Society.
Survivors include five sisters; Mrs. John DeMaria, Mrs. Celeste Guarasi, Mrs. Augustine Mazur, and Mary Rose Ferrari, all of Amsterdam; and Mrs. Edith Parks of Covington, Ohio. She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Anna Romano of Schenectady. Also, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:15 a.m. from the DeStefano Funeral Home, Rt. 5-S, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends Thursday 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corp., P.O. Box 11, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Marilyn Tesiero Sickler
April 22, 2002
Marilyn Tesiero Sickler, 74, of Crooked Street, Galway Lake died Monday morning at home.
Born in Amsterdam on July 31, 1929 a daughter to Edward and Sarah (Boyd) Tesiero.
Marilyn attended local schools as well as Ryder College and was a lifelong area resident. She worked at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital for over twenty years most of which were spent as a Physical Therapist's Assistant. She was a loving family woman and was also active with the Galway Senior Citizen's Group. She was a lifelong communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
Survivors include three sons; Robert Sickler, Edward Sickler and his wife Heidi and Thomas Sickler all of Galway Lake; a daughter Nancy Bellen and her husband Frederick of the Outer Banks, NC; a brother, Edward Teserio ofPacamo, MD; a sister, Sr. Edward Marie Tesiero S.A. of Graymore, NY; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a nephew.
Services are 12:15 Friday afternoon at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Grove Street. The Very Rev. James J. Gulley, celebrant. Interment will take place 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are this evening from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mae H. Hayes
April 23, 2002
Mae H. Hayes, 95, of (7 Timmerman Avenue) St. Johnsville Nursing Home, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at the nursing home.
She was born May 8, 1906 in Middlesprite, NY, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Gleason, and was educated in Middlesprite schools.
Mae was married to Harold Hayes who predeceased her in July 1974.
Mrs. Hayes was a member of St. Patrick's Church.
With family as her first priority, Mae proved herself as a loving and caring mother-in-law, grandmother and friend.
While a resident of the nursing home Mae made many friends at the home and enjoyed the many activities the nursing home had to offer.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law; Marjorie Hayes of St. Johnsville, her grandchildren; Richard Hayes and wife Darlene, Elaine McFee and husband Danny, Eileen Kretser and husband Ronald, Donna Sweeney and husband David, Gary Hayes and wife Anna, and Jerry Todd Hayes, six great granddaughters, six great grandsons, two great great grandsons, one great great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter; Genevieve Hayes, three sons; Harry, Donald and Gerald Hayes, and sister; Gertrude Moyer.
Funeral services will he held on Friday, April 26, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, St. Johnsville, with Sister Dolores Stevens, of St. Patrick's Church officiating. Interment will take place in West St. Johnsville Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Thursday, May 25, 2002 from 6 -8 p.m. All memorial contributions may be made to S.A.V.A.C. or to the St. Johnsville Nursing Home. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Louis M. Grasek Sr.
April 30, 2002
Louis M. Grasek Sr., 76, of State Highway 30A passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at his home with his family.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Grasek lived in the Town of Charleston for the past 16 years.
A graduate of Queens Vocational High School. He was employed by New York City Transit Authority retiring in 1985. Mr. Grasek was a U.S. Navy Veteran, during WWII serving on the U.S.S. Reeves, and during the Korean War on the U.S.S. Cecil. He was a member of the American Legion Post 701 of Amsterdam, Capital District Destroyer Escort Sailors' Association, 40/8 of Amsterdam, New York State Legion Press Associates, a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church where he served as an usher and Eucharistic minister, Duanesburg Senior Citizens, Charleston Historical Society, Charleston Senior Citizens, Town of Charleston Planning Board, and attended the Delanson Senior Mealsite.
Mr. Grasek is survived by his wife Margaret Bettinger Grasek whom he married September 11, 1948; two sons, Louis M. Grasek Jr., of Delanson, and Thomas Grasek of Romulus; three daughters, Susan Traficenti of Shepard, Michigan, Margaret Major of Paramus, New Jersey, and Mary Burns of LaGrange, New York; one sister, Pauline Baumann of Brooklyn; ten grandsons and four granddaughters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Delanson. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the White-Van Buren Funeral Home, 1779 Main Street, Delanson Thursday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Interment will be in Saratoga National Cemetery. Contributions in Louis's memory may be made to Our Lady of Fatima Church, P.O. Box 219, Delanson, NY 12053.

Alfred Joseph "Whitey" Paris
April 30, 2002
Alfred Joseph "Whitey" Paris, 89, formerly of the Wallins Corners Apartments, passed away Tuesday morning at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake following a short illness. He was a resident of the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid for the past two years.
Born in Schenectady on March 24, 1913, a son of John and Katherine Puras, emigrants from Lithuania who came to this country in 1899.
He lived in Amsterdam most of his life, and worked as a weaver for Mohawk Carpets before and after his tour of duty with the US Army in Europe during World War II.
He was an extremely talented self taught individual who thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and was quite a fisherman, hunter, taxidermist, mechanic, boat builder, home builder, caring husband, father and good friend. Although Al and Sadie, his wife, made several trips to Europe and Hawaii once retired, they most loved to spend time at their camp on the Great Sacandaga Lake along with family and friends.
He was a longtime communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
Survivors include his loving wife, the former Sadie Sidlauscus "Schell" whom he married on Christmas Day in 1941, a resident of the Uihlein Mercy Center; his two sons, Donald and his wife Christine of Pheonixville, PA,; and Martin Paris of Lake Placid; a granddaughter, Lynn Marie Paris of Niskayuna, and a sister, Virginia Licardo of Enfield, Conn. Nieces and nephews also survive.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of St. John the Baptist, VanDerveer Street, Amsterdam. Father Stanislaus J. Swierzowski celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. Interment is in St. Casimir's Cemetery after which the family asks those in attendance to join them at the Best Western Hotel on Market Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a remembrance may be made in Alfred's name to the Uihlein Mercy Center, 420 Old Military Road, Lake Placid, NY 12946.

Peter Capel Jr.
April 30, 2002
Peter Capel Jr., 76, of Caroline Street, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
Born in Amsterdam on March 18, 1926, a son of Peter Sr. and Catherine Belive Capel. He was educated locally and was a lifelong resident. Mr. Capel was employed for over forty years as a truck driver for the union, retiring from Dorn's Trucking in 1985.
He served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II and was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski Post 701 American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Capel was a lifelong communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, the former Josephine Zumbolo whom he married on April 29, 1951; five sons, Gary (Nancy) Capel of Amsterdam, Richard (Kathy) Capel of Scotia, Joseph (Betsy) Capel of Amsterdam, Peter (Julie) Capel of Stillwater, Minn., and John Capel of Amsterdam; his daughter, Kathleen (Larry) Zanella of Amsterdam; one brother, Benny Capel of Amsterdam; nine grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins survive.
His sister Mrs. Virginia Cannizzaro, predeceased him on January 12, 2002.
Services are Friday at 12 noon at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Church, East Main Street. The Very Rev. James J. Gulley, celebrant.
Interment is in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home where the Post 701 American Legion will be conducting a service at 7:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Anna L. DiCaprio
April 30, 2002
Anna L. DiCaprio, 89, of Luther Street, Amsterdam, passed away Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam. Miss DiCaprio was a resident at Mount Loretto Nursing Home for the past few years.
Born in Amsterdam on August 17, 1912 she was a daughter of Sisto A. and Maria Leonelli DiCaprio. She was a lifelong area resident and was educated in local schools.
She was employed by the General Electric Company in Schenectady for 32 years retiring in 1975.
Miss DiCaprio was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
She was a member of the G.E. Quarter Century Club. She was also a member of the Community Seniors.
Survivors include, one brother, Peter DiCaprio of Arizona and many nieces, nephews and cousins survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in Amsterdam. Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Church Fund, P.O. Box 699, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to a charity of one's choice.

Wasyl Hupalowsky
April 30, 2002
Mr. Wasyl Hupalowsky, 88, formerly of James Street, died Tuesday morning at the Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility where he resided since 1998.
Born in Ukraine, he lived and worked in Canada before coming to this area in 1960. He then worked in the local carpet mills.
Mr. Hupalowsky was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.
He was married to Olga Dudyk Hupalowsky. She died April 28, 1988.
There are no immediate survivors.
A Requiem Divine Liturgy will be held at 9:30 Thursday morning at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. Interment will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Marion H. Allen
May 7, 2002
Mrs. Marion H. Allen, 83, of Lafayette Street, Palatine Bridge, died Tuesday evening, May 7, 2002 at the Palatine Nursing Home after a brief illness.
She was born July 22, 1918 in Utica, NY the daughter of Henry and Julia Laugline Schreppel.
Mrs. Allen attended the Utica School System.
Mrs. Allen was a mother and homemaker. She was a resident of the area for 50 years.
She was of Roman Catholic faith.
She married her husband George D. Allen on December 31, 1941 at St. Peter's & Paul's Catholic Church in Canajoharie, NY. He died in 1954.
Mrs. Allen is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, George D. and Marlene Allen of Port Crane, NY; two sisters, Josephine Wrobel, Canajoharie, NY and Irene Fredericks, Palatine Bridge, NY; one grandson, George M. Allen, Albuquerque, NM; and one granddaughter, Carolyn H. Allen of Port Crane, NY.
A 9:00 a.m. funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2002 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY. Father Kenneth Swain officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, NY.
Calling hours are 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 10 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mrs. Allen to: American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.

Nell D. Wojnas
April 14, 2002
Miss Nell D. Wojnas, 94, of Ojai, California died April 14, 2002 after a brief illness. She was born October 25, 1907 in Poland, the daughter of Caroline and Mark Wojnas. She and her parents moved to Amsterdam, NY and she was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist.
Miss Wojnas worked as a payroll agent for the New York State School System in Rome, New York. When she retired in 1969, she moved to Ojai, CA and lived there for 33 years.
She was predeceased by four sisters, Mrs. Della Rogers, Genevieve DuPont, Mary Wojnas and Edna Wojnas; and one brother Joseph Wojnas. She is survived by four nieces and one nephew of California.
Visitation and services were held April 18 at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai, CA, with Rev. Michael McFadden, O.S.A. officiating. Interment was at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura, CA.

A graveside service is set for Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Fort Plain Cemetery for Miss Hazel L. Dygert, 91, of Dygert Road, Nelliston who died Tuesday, December 18, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam. Arrangements are by the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie.

A graveside service for former Sharon Springs resident, Ruth B. Janicki,who died Tuesday, February 12, in College Grove, TN, will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 18, at the Slate Hill Cemetery.
She was the mother of Marion-Lupo-Croker of Canajoharie, Barbara A. Card of College Grove, TN and the late Wayne Janicki.
