Jessie K. Paris
May 8, 2002
Jessie K. Paris, 86, of Thompson Street, died Wednesday as a result of a motor vehicle accident on Route 29 in Broadalbin.
She was born in Cowansville, PA on May 19, 1915 a daughter of John and Catherine Turek Salak and graduated from Kittaning High School in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Paris later resided in Gloversville before moving to Broadalbin.
At one time she was employed at the former Mohawk Carpet Mills. She later worked as an assembler at Ward Products in Amsterdam, retiring 21 years ago.
Mrs. Paris was an avid gardener.
She was married to John Paris Jr., on January 29, 1951 in Mississippi. He died on May 28, 1981. She was also predeceased by a brother William Salak and a sister Rose Marie Swartwelder.
Her survivors include a stepson, John Paris III of Scotia, two stepdaughters, Barbara Weldon of Amsterdam and Carol Loveless of Broadalbin; five brothers, Andrew Salak of Cowansville, PA, Joseph Salak of Lower Burrell, PA, George Salak of Dunnellon, FL, Frank Salak of Abington, VA, and John Salak of Meadville, PA; two sisters, Martha Allard of Santa Monica, CA, and Stella Edmonds of Sarver, PA; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Stahl of Broadalbin; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 38 West Main Street, Broadalbin with the Rev. Paul Moyer officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at the Rural Grove Cemetery, Inghams Mills, NY.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Broadalbin, in care of the funeral home.

Leland S. Reed
May 28, 2002
Mr. Leland S. Reed, age 92, of State Hwy. 29, Gloversville, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown. He was a resident there since August.
He was born August 26, 1909 in the town of Benson, the son of Alfred and Elizabeth Scribner Reed. He attended Northville Central School before moving to the town of Mayfield in 1924. He was graduated from Gloversville High School in 1927 and went to work on his father's dairy farm, which he took over in 1930. He operated the farm for more than 50 years before retiring in 1980 and turning the farm over to a stepson.
He was elected to the Fulton County Board of Supervisors and served his first years as Town of Mayfield Supervisor from 1938 to 1944. He helped to organize the first 4-H Club in the county and was a 4-H leader for ten years. Through his efforts on the board, the county secured it's first full-time 4-H agent.
After his service on the Board of Supervisors, he was elected to the Broadalbin Board of Education in 1946 where he served for 23 years. He was board president for several years while his children attended school there. During the years on the school board, he was director and president of the former Amsterdam-Fort Hunter Dairy Co-Op. He was active in the Fulton County Farm Bureau and Co-Operative Extension, which he served as it's president.
Mr. Reed was again elected as town supervisor in 1981 and served until 1992. He oversaw many town projects, such as the closing of the former town landfill, and the additions to the town hall and barn. He was chairman of the Fulton County Board of Supervisor's audit committee and was a member of the judicial, natural resources, and transportation committees. He was a member of the Tri-County Solid Waste Committee and Community Heritage Corporation's loan committee, and served on the Fulton County Traffic Safety Board.
He was a member of the Town of Mayfield Democratic Club where he served as it's chaplain. He was a member of the Perth Bible Church, and was associated with the Fulton County Sunday School Association.
Mr. Reed was an avid fan of the New York Yankees.
On October 10, 1930 he married the former Dorothy Hathaway, she died October 9, 1964. He later married the former Marjorie Bramer Frasier on November 12, 1965. She survives, as well as his four sons, Willard L. Reed of Gloversville and Orlando FL, Robert L. Reed of Moorisville, NY, Richard A. Reed of Lakeland, FL, James Thomas Reed of Johnstown; stepdaughter, Judith Bohne of Collins, NY; stepsons, James Frasier and Glenn Fraiser of Gloversville; stepdaughter, Linda Orleanski of Amsterdam; sister, Gladys R. Batty of Gloversville; 22 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren, and several cousins.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville where a funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday. Interment will take place at Broadalbin Mayfield Rural Cemetery, Broadalbin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Nursing Home Inc., 201 W. Madison Avenue, Johnstown, NY 12095 or the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.

Eleanore "Ellie" Frances Smith

Eleanore "Ellie" Frances Smith, 82, of Saratoga Springs, NY entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2002 at Saratoga Hospital after a happy and fulfilling life.
Ellie was born in Cleveland, Ohio, Novemeber 20, 1919, the daughter of the late Liguori and Ella (Wahl) Schell.
She was proud to be the loving wife of WWII veteran Walter W. Smith who passed away in 1974. She will always be the cherished mother and best friend of her daughter, Charlene De Lucia and much loved mother-in-law of Ronald De Lucia, both of Saratoga Springs. She is survived by her dear brother, L.J. "Bill" Schell and his wife, Kathy, of Kirtland, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.
She felt privileged to be cared for by Dr. Joseph Bell and the compassionate staff of Saratoga Hospital during her last weeks.
She graduated from Jane Addams High School in Cleveland, Ohio in 1937. While in Cleveland, Ellie worked at TRW, Greyhound, and Weldon Tool, and was an avid figure skater, and a member of the Gates Mills Players, and Chagrin Valley Little Theater.
Ellie was deeply religious and strongly patriotic. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Ballston Spa and St. Clements Church in Saratoga Springs.
Ellie was a member of the following groups in New York: Adirondack Players and Galway Players; Hagaman, Perth, Ballston Spa and St. Mary's (Amsterdam) Seniors, St. Stephen's (Hagaman) Rosary Society, Saratoga Christian Women's Club, Saratoga Red Hat Society. She volunteered at Proctor's Theater and Saratoga's Home Made Theater.
"Miss Ellie" was a sweet lady who had many friends of all ages who will remember her flare for living, her smile that would light up a room, her wit and sense of humor, fashionable appearance, and caring ways.
Do not mourn her passing, celebrate her wonderful life!!!
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the charity or church of your choice.
Calling hours will be at The Wheeler Funeral Home, 25 Hyde Blvd., Ballston Spa, NY from 10:00 -11:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Ballston Spa at 12:00 noon on Saturday, June 1, 2002.
Her final earthly resting place will be at Saratoga National Veterans Cemetery in honor of her late husband, Walter. Services there will be held at a later date.

Marjorie Nellis
April 25, 2002
Marjorie Nellis, daughter of Clayton and Elizabeth Rivenburg Nestle, born February 14, 1916 died on April 25, 2002 in Gettysburg, PA.
She married Woodrow C. Nellis on November 9, 1946.
He preceded her in death on December 16, 1988.
Surviving are cousins, nieces and nephews.
Burial was in Fort Plain Cemetery.

David John Furman
May 22, 2002
David John Furman passed away May 22, 2002 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born April 10, 1942, the son of Andrew and Victoria Leia Furman. He attended area schools.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church.
Mr. Furman was a truck driver for various companies.
He was a member of the National Guard and John J. Wyszomirski Post 701.
Survivors include twin sons, Joshuah D. and Jeffrey D. Furman, Amsterdam; one brother Richard Furman; one sister Marcella Bucoff; and several nephews and nieces.
There will be no viewing hours or services.
Donations may be sent to Special Olympics-Area 9, the Tuberous Sclerosis Association or the March of Dimes in his memory.

Maria G. Rivera
May 26, 2002
Mrs. Maria G. Rivera, 61, of St. Lucille Drive, Schenectady, died Sunday morning in Yuaco, Puerto Rico, while visiting family.
Born August 6, 1940, in Guanica, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of Ricardo and Esmeralda Santana Lozada. She moved to Amsterdam in 1956 and later to Schenectady in 1976.
She was employed by General Electric Company of Schenectady and later worked for the Office of General Services for the State of New York in Schenectady.
Mrs. Rivera was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam, NY and Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Schenectady.
She enjoyed cooking, was an avid reader and loved camping with her family on the Sacandaga Lake.
She was married on July 11, 1975, to Dominick Rivera.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Richard Caraballo of Schenectady, NY, Louis Caraballo of Vanceboro, NC, and Gunnery Sergeant Michael Caraballo of the U. S. Marine Corp. Kailua, Hawaii; a daughter, Wanda Rivera of Schenectady; eight brothers, Carlos Lozada of El Paso, TX, Jose Lozada of Kissamee, FL, Bruce Lozada of Schenectady, Louis Lozada of Amsterdam, Victor Lazada of Miami, FL, Julio Santiago of Puerto Rico, William Gomez of Camden, NJ, and Carlos Lozada Jr. of New York, NY; a sister, Rosa Lozada of Schenectady; two grandchildren, Janina Caraballo and Desiree Ryan; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Grove Street, Amsterdam. Burial will take place in St. Michael's Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Association.

George Davidson
May 28, 2002
Mr. George Davidson, 71, of State Highway 10, Johnstown, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown, after a short illness.
He was born on July 8, 1930 in West Islip, the son of Max and Julia Stagg Davidson.
Mr. Davidson served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952.
He owned and operated Davidson Plumbing and Heating in Long Island, in 1975 he went to work for the General Electric Company in Schenectady, and retired from the Johnstown Knitting Mill.
Mr. Davidson made fabulous woodcarvings and furniture, selling many on the internet.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Cordes Davidson whom he married, November 2, 1953; one daughter, Jane Davidson and her husband, Robert J. Bertschi of Babylon, Long Island; two grandchildren, Johnathan Pearlman of Merrick, Long Island and Tara Pearlman of Babylon, Long Island; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by one son, George A. Davidson, and one brother, Charles Davidson.
Mr. Davidson has donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College.
There will be no services or calling hours.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice or to Albany Medical College.
Arrangements are by the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.

Leon Finkle
May 30, 2002
Leon Finkle, age 78, of Gloversville, died Thursday at the Bassett Health Care Center, Cooperstown, NY.
He was born March 4, 1924 in Gloversville, the son of Isaac and Bertha Kleinsinger Finkle. He graduated from Gloversville High School and later received a business degree from Bryant College in Providence, RI. Mr. Finkle was a US Army Veteran during WWII serving with the 90th Chemical Mortar Battalion in the European Theater.
Mr. Finkle was the Chairman of the Board of Finkle Distributors of Johnstown at the time of his death. He joined the family business in 1946 and was instrumental in starting the expansion of the company which became a nationally known distributor throughout the northeast, distributing food products, tobacco and many other consumer goods. He became the first recipient of the Young Executive Achievement Award in the industry. In 1989 he was honored as Man of the Year by the Neve Yerushalayim School in Israel. In 2001 he was honored by the NY State Tobacco Assn. with their Beacon of the Industry Award. Mr. Finkle was the treasurer of the Marian and Leon Finkle Foundation supporting charities locally and nationally.
Mr. Finkle was a member of the Knesseth Israel Synagogue, the Jewish Community Center, the B'nai Brith and the Pine Brook Golf Club, all of Gloversville. He was a member of the Congregational Sons of Israel Synagogue of Amsterdam, NY. He was a former board of directors member of the City National Bank of Gloversville, a former president of the NY State Tobacco Distributors Assn., and was on the board of the Gentle Winds Condominium of St. Croix, U.S. V.I.
Mr. Finkle is survived by his wife, Marian Gollender Finkle, whom he married October 19, 1946; two sons, Mark Finkle of Gloversville and Dan Finkle of Niskayuna, NY; two daughters, Amy Subar of Potomac, Maryland and Jane Finkle of Philadelphia, PA; nine grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Abraham, Harry and Charles Finkle.
There will a funeral service held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Knesseth Israel Synagogue, 34 East Fulton Street, Gloversville, with the Rabbi Martin Gordon officiating. Interment will take place at the Knesseth Israel Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions can be made to the Knesseth Israel Synagogue or the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY, 13326. Arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Avenue, Gloversville.

Clayton Cole Swears
May 27, 2002
Colonel (Ret.) Clayton "Slip" Cole Swears, 86, of Odenton, MD, died on May 27, 2002 after a long illness.
He was born in Broadalbin, NY on August 13, 1915. After attending Broadalbin Schools he went to NY State Ranger School from which he graduated in 1935. He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Forestry with a BS degree in 1940 and received an MS in wildlife management in 1941 from the same institution.
In 1942 at Ft. Monmouth, NJ he was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the Signal Corps of the U. S. Army and sent to his first assignment in Arlington Hall Station. He became a Major in 1945 as a result of a distinguished wartime career in cryptology. After the war he was stationed at army headquarters in Tokyo. Subsequently he went to Bad Abling in Germany where he was post commander. He spent several years at Fort Devens in Massachusetts and then moved to Maryland where he was posted in 1966 at NSA for ten years. During this time he spent a year in Vietnam in charge of Army communications.
Major commendations include Legion of Merit with three oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation with oak leaf, Air Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Joint Services Commendation, and two medals from the government of South Vietnam.
He was married to Dee Elaine Skinner 1941-1990 and to Nancy Abbott Thompson in 1992. He attended the Main Post Chapel Protestant congregation at Fort Meade. Slip loved hunting and fishing. He was a life long member of the Masonic Order and a Sojourner. He spent summers in Falmouth, Maine for the past ten years.
Survivors include his wife of ten years and four sons, Clayton Cole Swears Jr., Robert C. Swears, Michael S. Swears and Barry C. Swears. He was predeceased by two sons Douglas B. Swears and David L. Swears.
In lieu of sending flowers the family requests that donations in his memory be sent to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 3551 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19140.

Herbert A. Looman
May 30, 2002
Mr. Herbert A. Looman, 71, of 187 Mohawk Street, Canajoharie died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at his residence of natural causes.
He was born in Fairfield, New York on August 31, 1930 the son of the late August and Ruth A. (Burroughs) Looman and was educated in schools in Middleville and Little Falls.
His marriage to the former Janet Schrell took place on December 7, 1953 in Baltimore, Maryland.
A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he served from December 31, 1947 until he was honorably discharged on November 16, 1951 with the rank of Private First Class. He served in the Caribbean and Mediterranean areas. He was awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his service.
Herb was employed at BeechNut Manufacturing Company for 30 years, retiring from there in June 1992.
His affiliations included the DAV of Richfield Springs and the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #3275 of Fort Plain. His personal interest was in stock car racing, not only watching them, but he drove his own car #2 "The Outlaw".
Surviving him are his wife Janet of 48 years; his daughters Marilyn Lee Louman at home, Rosemarie Louman of Palatine, Jean Ann Louman of Johnstown, Terri Lee Palemine, Florida, and Cheri Looman at home; his brothers, Richard "Tom" Looman of Little Falls, and August "Buck" Looman of Oppenheim; seven grandchildren and three great grandsons, also nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 3, 2002 at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Kenneth Dingman will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Fort Plain Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday from 4-7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Mid-County Ambulance Corps, or to the American Cancer Society in his name.
