Louise Hoffman
January 13, 2003
Louise Hoffman, 75, of 9 Rockefeller Drive, St. Johnsville, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2003 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Utica, NY.
She was born October 3, 1927 in Nelliston, NY the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Wagner) Winkler and was a graduate of Fort Plain High School, Class of 1944.
Her marriage to John Hoffman took place on May 16, 1948 at St. James Catholic Church in Fort Plain.
Mrs. Hoffman was employed as a secretary at Luxuray in Fort Plain, a teacher's aide for the St. Johnsville Central School District, and worked with her husband John on the family farm on Crum Creek Road until their retirement in 1984.
Louise was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and served on the St. Johnsville Board of Education for 8 years.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, John; a daughter, Mary Lowery and husband, John of Ithaca; a son, David Hoffman and wife Theresa of Rochester; granddaughters, Kathleen Lowery of Florida, and Elizabeth, Sarah and Emily Hoffman of Rochester; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a brother-in-law, Ed Hoffman.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Loretta Smith and Doris Trembley.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 17, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. from the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, St. Johnsville and at 9:30 a.m. from St. Patrick's Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Spring interment will be in St. Johnsville Cemetery.
Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Thursday, January 16, 2003 from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
All memorial contributions may be made to S.A.V.A.C. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arnold F. Eckelman
January 15, 2003
Arnold F. Eckelman, 91, formerly of Trinity Place, passed away Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock surrounded by his loving family at Montgomery Meadows where he had been a resident since May of 2000.
Born in Amsterdam on November 23, 1911, he was a son of the late George E. and Anna Claire Eckelman.
Mr. Eckelman received his education in the Amsterdam school system, and was employed with IBEW#166 as an electrician at General Dynamics Corporation, West Milton, NY, until retiring in 1975.
A U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, Mr. Eckelman served as a 3rd class electrician petty officer aboard the destroyer USS Selfridge. While returning from a scouting and gunnery mission to Pearl Harbor just prior to December 7, 1941, the Selfridge detected and destroyed a suspected enemy submarine. That incident was noted as the first act of war between Japan and the United States. He was at Pearl Harbor at the time of the surprise attack, and was an eyewitness of the explosion of the USS Arizona. Mr. Eckelman also served aboard the USS Blue and USS Badoeng Strait. On January 22, 1944 while serving aboard the USS Wells, he was initiated into the Solemn Mysteries of the Deep for having crossed the equator. He was also in the battles of Guadalcanal and Midway among others. Mr. Eckelman was the recipient of the Pearl Harbor Medal and the State of New York Medal of Merit, awarded for meritorious service in peacetime or in direct support of combat operations.
Mr. Eckelman played semi-pro baseball with the Amsterdam Rugmakers, coached by his father and was an avid bowler and golfer. He was also credited for saving the life of a drowning boy at Galway Lake.
Very dedicated to the young people of Amsterdam, Mr. Eckelman coached Elks Club little league baseball team, the Ancient Order of Hibernians Babe Ruth baseball teams and St. Michael's CYO basketball team.
Mr. Eckelman was a long-time participant at local Pearl Harbor ceremonies hosted by AMVETS Post 21 and other organizations until failing health prevented attendance.
He was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church, a member of it's St. Anthony-Holy Name Society, and a member of Knights of Columbus Council 209 and the Msgr.. Wm. A. Browne Assembly Fourth Degree. He served on numerous committees including the Bingo team.
Mr. Eckelman is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Fratianni Eckelman to whom he was married on September 2, 1945; his sons, Michael Eckelman and his wife Ellen of Mahopac, NY, Dr. C. Cleary Eckelman and his wife, Beth of Webster Grove, Missouri, and Kevin Eckelman and his wife Karol of Tribes Hill, NY; his grandchildren, Keith Michael Eckelman and Scott Christopher Eckelman both of Mahopac, NY, Brendan Palmer Eckelman of San Diego, CA, and Charles Eckelman-McIntosh and Julia Eckelman-McIntosh both of Webster Groves, Missouri; his brother, Louis Eckelman of Amsterdam, NY; and his sister, Vivian Rummler of Gloversville, NY; nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins.
Mr. Eckelman was also predeceased by his brothers, Richard Eckelman and Edward Eckelman.
The funeral with full military honors will be Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, followed at 9:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Grove Street, Amsterdam.
Interment will be this spring at St. Michael's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours are Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
Memorial gifts in Mr. Eckelman's name may be made to St. Michael's Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 699 or to Montgomery Meadows Activities Fund, Sandy Drive, both of Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Raymond W. Williams
January 14, 2003
Mr. Raymond W. Williams, 83, of Buel Road, Sharon Springs, died Tuesday evening, January 14, 2003 at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown after a long illness.
He was born in the Town of East Fishskill, NY on February 18, 1919 a son of Barney and Bertha Williams.
Mr. Williams attended the Stormville Mountain School.
Mr. Williams was employed as a night cleaner at Beech-Nut and Life Savers in Canajoharie for 30 years until his retirement.
He was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Williams was of the Episcopal faith.
He enjoyed gardening and caring for his flowers and enjoyed taking care of many different animals.
He was married to Alice S. Williams on June 13, 1987 in Canajoharie, NY.
Survivors include his wife, Alice S. Williams, Sharon Springs, NY; three sons, Raymond W. Williams Jr., Canajoharie, NY, Larry R. Williams, Canajoharie, NY, and Richard H. Williams, Canajoharie, NY; one daughter, Barbara A. Pitcher, Canajoharie, NY; several step-children; two sisters, Elizabeth Willoughby, Herkimer, NY and Beatrice Grannemann, Stuart, FL; three grandchildren; two close grandchildren, David Parkinson Jr., Sharon Springs, NY and Ray-Jay Henderson Jr., Sharon Springs, NY; eight step grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Williams was predeceased by two grandchildren, Christy Eldredge and Kevin Williams.
A 3:00 p.m. funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to National Kidney Foundation of Northeast NY, 23 Computer Drive East, Albany, NY 12205-1134.

Audrey Willis Carp
January 14, 2003
Audrey Willis Carp, 73, of Newtown, PA, and formerly of Titusville, FL, Mr. Laurel, NJ, passed away Tuesday morning.
Born in Amsterdam, NY, on February 5, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Edith Schuhardt Willis.
Audrey received her education in the Amsterdam school system and was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch Senior High School. She was a homemaker and lived in several areas of the United States.
Always involved in community and charitable organizations, Audrey served as a Troop Leader for both the Girl and Boys Scouts of America, was a Fifty Member of the Art-Wel Chapter #208, Order of the Eastern Star of Amsterdam, NY, a member of the Elks/Does of Titusville, FL, and a member of the General Federation of Women's Club where she held officer positions in Pennsylvania and Florida. As an active member of St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Titusville, Fl, she played in the bell choir before moving to her most recent residence in Newtown, PA. Sharing her love for music, she served as a substitute organist at churches in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. While living in Mt. Laurel, NJ, Audrey was very active in the Lenape High School Band Parents and helped organizational activities, serving several years as President. She also volunteered at Garden State Hospital, Marlton, NJ, and served as an officer in their auxiliary.
Her husband, Ralph E. Carp to whom she married on July 11, 1953, passed away February 15, 2002.
Surviving are her children, Cheryl C. Ludwig of Trenton, NJ, Ralph E. Carp Jr, of Perkasie, PA, and Richard E. Carp of Berlin, NJ, and six grandchildren.
The Office for the Burial of the Dead and Holy Eucharist will be read Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Ann's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Christopher A. Smith officiating.
Friends are invited to call Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 at Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be considered to the following charitable organizations that Audrey so actively supported: General Federation of Women's Club of Bangor, 22 South 5th Street, Bangor, PA 18013 or Titusville Women's Scholarship Fund c/o Kathy Sproul, 3513 Blue Herron Circle, Titusville, FL 32796.

Philomena M. Billington
January 29, 2003
Mrs. Philomena M. Billington, 87, of State Hwy 5S, passed away Wednesday at Palatine Nursing Home where she had been a resident.
Born on May 12, 1915 in Nelliston, she was the daughter of Carmelo and Clotilda Piroli Ciani. She was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
She was employed as a foreman at the Canajoharie Dress Factory until retiring.
Mrs. Billington was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Fort Plain.
She was predeceased on March 4, 1969 by her husband, Aaron Victor Billington, whom she married on November 28, 1959.
Survivors include a daughter, Sadie Billington of Fort Plain; a brother Dario Ciani of Nelliston; one sister, Sylvia St. John of Ravena, NY; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Margarete Billington; four sisters, Josephine, Mary, Gilda and Rose and six brother, Tony, Dario, Mario, Joey, Peter and Giuseppi.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Kenneth Swain officiating.
Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Palatine Nursing Home.

Julia Gondarowski
January 29, 2003
Mrs. Julia Gondarowski, 99 of State Hwy. 5S, Fort Plain where she had resided with her son and daughter-in-law for 8 years, and formerly of Amsterdam, died Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at Van Allen Nursing Home, Little Falls, NY after a long illness.
She was born in Warren, MA on June 14, 1903 a daughter of Stanley and Zofia Misiaszek Krawczyk.
Mrs. Gondarowski was educated in Poland through primary grades with some further education also in Poland to become a teacher.
Mrs. Gondarowski was a homemaker and mother.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church in Amsterdam, NY.
Mrs. Gondarowski enjoyed gardening and farming.
She was married Joseph Gondarowski in the United States. whom predeceased her.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Margaret Gondarowski, Fort Plain, NY; two sisters, Anna Dziedzic, Amsterdam, NY and Jane Rood, Little Falls, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A 8:15 a.m. Prayer Service will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie followed by a 9:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at the St. James Roman Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain with Father Kenneth Swain officiating.
Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Amsterdam, NY.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2003 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Church Memorial Fund, 50 Cornell Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Marianna Shults
January 29, 2003
Mrs. Marianna Shults, 88, of State Hwy. 5S, Fort Plain died Wednesday at St. Johnsville Nursing Home where she was been a resident.
Born on January 13, 1915 in Hallsville, NY, she was the daughter of John and Antoinette Dievendorf Lieber. She was a lifelong resident and graduate of Fort Plain High School. She went on to graduate from Albany Business College.
She was employed for over 20 years as a bookkeeper for G.L.F., which later became Agway of Fort Plain, until retiring in 1970.
Mrs. Shults was a member of Fort Plain Reformed Church and served on its consistory.
She was a faithful member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Otsquago Chapter, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Turtle Club, National Bell Association and former member of the Hallsville Grange.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard Shults whom she married on June 6, 1936; two sons, Gary L. Shults and his wife Helen of Canajoharie and Manly E. Shults and his wife Karen of Delhi, NY; two daughter, Sondra Failing of Fort Plain and Gayle S. Smith and her husband Jack of Cooperstown; two sister, Janet O'Brian of Crawfordville, FL and Doris Stiles of Amsterdam; 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death in 1937 by an infant son, Leonard John Shults and an infant daughter, Annette Shults in 1954. She was also predeceased in 2001 by a sister, Margaret Thompson.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 12:30 at the Fort Plain Reformed Church, Canal Street with the Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating.
Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours are Saturday from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie where the Order of the Eastern Star will meet at 5:45 p.m.
Memorial contribution may be made in her memory to Fort Plain Reformed Church or MidCounty Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Lena D. Alessi
January 30, 2003
Mrs. Lena D. Alessi, 75, a former resident of Park Hill Adult Home passed away Thursday at Montgomery Meadows following a long illness.
Born on January 28, 1928 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Samuel and Melena Rizzo Bursese. She was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
She was employed as a clerk for Hays & Wormuth in Amsterdam.
Mrs. Alessi was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.
She was a member of the Amsterdam Women's Business & Professional Club.
She was predeceased in 1992 by her beloved husband Joseph Alessi.
Her loving family includes her sisters, Carmella Orapallo of Amsterdam and Helen Rowan of Galway; and a brother, Lawrence Bursese of Hawaii. She is also survived by her dear nieces and nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
Burial will take place in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Calling hours are Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to National Parkinson Foundation, 131 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Joan Kathleen Goldy
January 23, 2003
Joan Kathleen Goldy, 73, died from cancer January 23, 2003 in Euclid, OH.
Born in Elmira, NY on April 2, 1929, the daughter of Eugene J. McBride and Beulah A. German. Joan was predeceased by both of her parents.
The McBride family moved to Amsterdam in the early 1930s. She attended St. Mary's Grade and High School, where she met her future husband. She married Walter J. Goldy, August 29, 1949 in Amsterdam, NY. The Goldys resided on Hewitt Street until 1956, when they relocated several times. She and Walter have been residents of Euclid, OH the past 32 years.
She is the mother of Catherine J. Siemers (Don), Lawrenceburg, IN, David T. Goldy, Overland Park, KS, Janet M. Davis (Greg), Jacksonville, FL, William J. and John E., of Euclid; grandmother of Jennifer M. Siemers, Denver, CO, Allison M. Evans (nee Siemers, Chris), Lexington, KY, Mark D. and Benjamin W. Siemers, Lawrenceburg, IN, Justin N. Lundquist (Sarah, nee Ashbrook), Calumet City, IL; sister of John T. McBride (Harriet nee Mayhew), deceased), Grand Rapids, MI; step sister of Rebecca Sue Richardson (nee McBride, Philip), Quinton, AL, Anthony Pallone and Carol Korva (nee Pallone) of Amsterdam, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, January 27, 2003 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Euclid, Deacon Andrew J. Goldy, Joan's brother-in-law, Somersville, MA, assisted in the ceremony.
Interment was in the Mentor Cemetery, Mentor, OH.
The family suggests donations to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th Street, Cleveland, OH, 44119.
