Mary Fijalkowski
February 12, 2003
Mrs. Mary Fijalkowski, 86, of Wall Street, Amsterdam died Wednesday at Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility where she had been a resident.
Born on April 12, 1916 in Schenectady, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sledjewski. She was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
She was employed as a laborer for Fownes Brothers Glove Factory in Amsterdam.
Mrs. Fijalkowski was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church.
She was predeceased in 1979 by her husband Anthony Fijalkowski. She was also preceded in death by her son Ronald Fijalkowski in 1993.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Armenia Fijalkowski of Rochester; five grandchildren, Kimberly Seeley of Amsterdam, Charisse Fijalkowski of Rochester, Darlene Brescia of Rochester, Steven Fijalkowski of Charlotte, NC, and Angelique Wignot of Charlotte, NC; four great grandchildren, Cassandra Seeley, Karli Seeley, Morgan Fijalkowski, Ronni-Marie Fijalkowski; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam followed by a mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church.
Burial will take place in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
A calling hour will precede the service from 8:00 until 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home on Saturday.

Arlette C. Merz
February 12, 2003
Arlette C. Merz, 83, of Amsterdam Road, Scotia, died Wednesday at St. Clare's Hospital after a short illness.
She was born in Amsterdam, the daughter of the late Matthew and Eudora Payette Coessens.
Arlette was the widow of William P. Merz Jr. they were married for 54 years.
Mrs. Merz was a lifelong area resident, had lived in Amsterdam, Cranesville and most of her life in Glenville. She had been employed as a secretary at the Auriesville Shrine in Amsterdam. Arlette was a member of St. Margaret of Cortona Church in Pattersonville where she was past President of the Rosary Society and had served as a trustee. She was a former member of the Cranesville Senior Citizens.
She is survived by her son, William Matthew (Michele) Merz of Caroga Lake, and six daughters, Diane London of Nashua, NH, Mary Anne Hart (Raymond Mullin) of Guilderland, Patricia (Edward C.) Pangburn of Duanesburg, Sheila (Herbert) Sherry of New York City, Jeanne (Douglas) Jacobs of Saratoga Springs and Loretta (Steven) Hill of Staatsburg, NY. she also leaves twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2003 at St. Margaret of Cortona Catholic Church in Rotterdam. Friends and relatives are invited and may call on the family at The White Funeral Home, 264 North Ballston Avenue, Scotia on Friday from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in Arlette's memory to the Beukendaal Fire Department, Sacandaga Road, Scotia, 12302, to Schenectady Co. Long Term Care Unit, 107 Nott Street, Schenectady, NY 12308 or to a charity of choice.

David H. Barkevich
February 20, 2003
Mr. David H. Barkevich, 60, of Crooked Street, Galway formerly of Route 67, Amsterdam, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, at his home with his family at his side.
Born on June 9, 1942 in Amsterdam, NY he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John and Caroline Kondrat Barkevich. a lifelong area resident, he was a 1960 graduate of St. Mary's Institute and went on to graduate from Hudson Valley Community College with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1962.
Mr. Barkevich served in Vietnam with the United States Army in the 1018th Quartermaster Unit, Schenectady where he received the Bronze Star and was honorably discharged from service after completing a six-year active and reserve obligation.
He was employed as a civil engineer for over 35 years by the New York State Department of Transportation. He served as Director of the New York State Department of Transportation Engineers for 6 years and was honored as engineer of the year by the New York State Department of Transportation in 1999.
Mr. Barkevich was a member of GAVAC for 10 years and served as their Training and Defensive Driving Instructor. He served as the National Safety Council's Defensive Driving Coordinator for the NYS Department of Transportation. He volunteered for the Red Cross for many years, he served as Chairman of the Disaster Committee and served as Chapter Chairman. He was instrumental in obtaining the Montgomery County Chapter House of the Red Cross and the Chapter House was dedicated to Dave in 1980 by Bishop Howard Hubbard. A member of the Hagaman Volunteer Fire Department since 1982, he served as Fire Police, Vice President, and Chairman of the Long Term Planning and Fund Raising Committee of the department. He served as Chairman of the Board of Appeals for the Town of Amsterdam. He was Past Exalted Ruler of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks #101, Amsterdam. He was named WKOL's "Citizen of the Year" in 1980 and on October 22, 2002 was Awarded the New York State Senate Liberty Medal and was named "Mr. Community Service' by Senator Hugh Farley for all his community service. He was also given a plaque by the National Red Cross for all his dedication and service to the Red Cross over the years.
Mr. Barkevich was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
Survivors include his beloved wife of over 37 years, Christine Krupa Barkevich; his loving children, Diane Conti and her husband James of Galway, Daniel Barkevich and wife Naomi of Clifton Park, and Joseph Barkevich and his fiance Jennifer Dailey of Columbia, SC; four grandchildren, Matthew and Caroline Conti and Kevin and David Barkevich; two brothers, John D. Barkevich of Caroga Lake and James Barkevich of Amsterdam; a sister, Joan Knapik of Amsterdam; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., followed by a Mass of Christina Burial to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam with Rev. Thomas Krupa officiating.
Burial will take place in St. John's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home where the Elks will be meeting at 6:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Elks National Foundation of the Hagaman Volunteer Fire Department.

Beatrice Brooks Persse
February 18, 2003
Mrs. Beatrice Brooks Persse, 86, died Tuesday morning, February 18, 2003 at Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, Amsterdam. She had resided there for five years.
She was born July 28, 1916 in Amsterdam, the daughter of Martin and Cora Osterhoout Brooks. She graduated from Fultonville Free Union High School in 1935, and lived most of her life in Fultonville.
Mrs. Persse served as organist of the Fultonville Reformed Church for over 40 years. She was a member of the Reformed Church Women's Organization, and served as a Deaconess on the Reformed Church Consistory for several terms. She was a Republican Committee person for 17 years in the Town of Glen. She was Past President of VFW Auxiliary Post #562, and a member of the Fultonville High School Alumni Association. For many years she served as hostess at the family owned Manor House Restaurant in Gloversville.
She was married to R. Schuyler Persse on September 13, 1941. Mr. Persse died May 17, 1969.
Mrs. Persse is survived by a son, Richard S. Persse and his wife Pamela; two grandsons, Richard S. Persse III and Stephen R. Persse; three great grandchildren, Joshua, Brandon, and Brianna Persse; a sister-in-law, Betty Moyer; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by 14 brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the Fultonville Reformed Church, corner of Route 5S and 30A, Fultonville, where a funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Adrian Gray and Rev. Jack Millard officiating.
Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fultonville Reformed Church; or the Fonda-Fultonville Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Montgomery Street, Fultonville, NY, 12072; or The Fonda-Fultonville Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 218, Fonda, NY, 12068; or to the charity of your choice.
Arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., Gloversville.

John J. Shostek
February 19, 2003
John J. Shostek, 63, of 1326 Kringsbush Road, St. Johnsville, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, NY.
He was born July 27, 1939 in Johnstown, PA., the son of Agnes M. (Czyrnik) Shostek and the late William P. Shostek. John was a graduate of Johnstown Catholic High School, class of 1956, and attended St. Francis College in Loretta, PA, and became a resident of St. Johnsville in 1962.
His marriage to Rose Battisti took place on February 6, 1965 at St. Patrick's Church in St. Johnsville. The couple shared a blessed union of marriage for 37 years until the passing of Mrs. Shostek on October 9, 2002.
Mr. Shostek was in the U.S. Army, enlisting in October 1958 and was honorably discharged in February 1962 serving with the 81st Boat Transportation Co. in Europe. He also was a member of DASE, a specially trained unit specializing with Defense Against Soviet Espionage until his time of discharge from France at the rank of SP5.
For 13 years, John and his wife Rose owned and operated the Village Restaurant in Canajoharie. He was also previously a plant manager with the former Palatine Dye & Finishing Co. in St.. Johnsville. Up until recent retirement, he was a manager with Lee Dyeing Co., Inc. in Johnstown/Gloversville, NY.
Mr. Shostek was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in St. Johnsville.
Survivors include his mother, Agnes of Johnstown, PA.; a son, John J. Shostek Jr. and his wife, Beth of Canajoharie; three daughters, Deborah Mosher and husband, Scott of Fort Plain, Dawn Failing of Palatine Bridge, and Jean Grandy and fiance Jeff Doxtater of Little Falls; a brother, Edward Shostek and wife, Sandy of Erie, PA; a sister, Phyllis Mical an husband Joe of Chicago, ILL; his grandsons, Michael Shostek, Kory Failing, Chauncey (CJ) Mosher, Nathan Mosher, Kyle (Goober) Grandy and Samuel Shostek; his granddaughter, Kelly Pope; a great grandson, Anthony Shostek; many nieces and nephews, including Dave and Paula Sutton of Amsterdam; and several cousins, aunts and uncles, his mother-in-law, Violet Battisti of St. Johnsville; and in-laws, Joseph and Connie Battisti of Fort Plain, Peter and Jane Battisti of St. Johnsville, Anthony and Patricia Battisti of Jordanville, Paul and Jeanne Battisti of St. Johnsville and Dennis Battisti and Pia Kadtke of Palatine Bridge.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 24, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. from the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, St. Johnsville, and at 9:30 a.m. from St. Patrick's Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Spring interment will take place in St. Johnsville Cemetery.
Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Sunday, February 23, 2003 from 2:00-5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make all memorial contributions to S.A. V.A.C. or to St. Patrick's Church Bereavement Group.
Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Virginia Ann Papa
February 20, 2003
Virginia Ann Papa, 85, of Center Street, Fonda passed away Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born on June 9, 1917 in Schenectady, NY she was the daughter of Paul C. and Mary McCarthy Schermerhorn. She was an area resident most of her life.
She was employed for a number of years for the former Templeton Glove Company of Fonda as a glove inspector.
She was a communicant of St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church in Fonda.
Mrs. Papa was a member of St. Cecilia's Rosary Society and the Johnstown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a den mother for Cub Scouts in Fonda and also did volunteer work for the American Cancer Society.
She is survived by her husband, Andrew F. Papa Sr., whom she married December 14, 1946. She is also survived by a daughter, Marion Alfano of Johnstown, NY; a son, Andrew F. Papa Jr. and his wife, Diane D. of Fonda; five grandchildren, Joe Alfano, Eva Stoner, Alisha Kobas, Danielle and Desiree Papa; and two great grandchildren, Keegan and Natalie Stoner; a brother, Paul D. Schermerhorn of Schenectady, NY and a cousin Anne Seld of Seneca Falls, NY.
She was predeceased by a brother John R. Schermerhorn.
Funeral services as well as a service conducted by the Johnstown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be held Saturday during calling hours at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville.
Interment will follow the funeral service in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Calling hours are Saturday from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Evelyn O. Zoller
February 20, 2003
Mrs. Evelyn O. Zoller, 87, formerly of Brookmans Crs. Road, Fort Plain, NY died Thursday, February 20, 2003 at Palatine Nursing Home after a long illness.
She was born March 31, 1915 in the Town of Danube, NY the daughter of Leland and Ruth Bellinger Snyder.
Mrs. Zoller was educated at Fort Plain Central School.
Mrs. Zoller was a mother and homemaker. she was a life long area resident.
She was of the Protestant faith.
Mrs. Zoller was a member of Otsquago Grange in Hallsville, former Superintendent of the Floral Building at the Fonda Fair for over 10 years and enjoyed flowers
She married Lester E. Zoller on November 25, 1937 in the Town of Minden, NY at her parent's home. Mr. Zoller died on September 13, 1996.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Z. and David Bouck, Fort Plain, NY; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry A. and Janice Zoller, Fort Plain, NY; one brother, Harland Snyder, Fort Plain, NY; three grandchildren, Andrea Bouck, Fort Plain, NY, Keri Zoller and Kyle Zoller both of Fort Plain, NY; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A 4:00 p.m. funeral service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2003 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in Fort Plain Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to charity of one's choice.

Mary (Penge) Liskiewicz
February 20, 2003
Mary (Penge) Liskiewicz, 88, formerly of East 13th Street, New York City, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2003, at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home where she was a patient for the past three years.
Born in Naples, Italy on October 30, 1914, she was the daughter of Mario and Antoinette Penge.
She moved to New York City at the age of 6 years and was a life long New York City resident.
Mrs. Liskiewicz was employed in the garment industry, retiring in 1979.
She was of the Roman Catholic faith and was a member of the International I.L.D.W.U. Garment Workers Union.
She was married to Peter Liskiewicz,whom is deceased. She is also predeceased by a son, Michael Liskiewicz.
Survivors include one brother, Anthony Penge of Amsterdam; one granddaughter and one grandson and two nephews.
Funeral services and calling hours will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5-S, Amsterdam.

Frances M. Anthony
February 19, 2003
Mrs. Frances M. Anthony, 62, of Eagle Street, Amsterdam died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.
Born on July 15, 1940 in Amsterdam she was the daughter of Stephen and Veronica Blazevitch Gegzno. She was a lifelong area resident and was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
She worked various jobs in Amsterdam until going to work for General Electric Co. in Schenectady for the past 28 years.
Mrs. Anthony was a communicant of St. Casimir;s Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
Survivors include her mother, Veronica Gegzno of Amsterdam; a son, Mark D. Anthony of Amsterdam; three brothers, Paul and Edward Gegzno both of Amsterdam and Michael Gegzno of Mayfield; a sister, Wanda Madej of Amsterdam; an aunt, uncle and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, 260 East Main Street, Amsterdam with the Rev. Stanley Swierzowski officiating.
Burial will take place in St. Casimir's Cemetery.
Calling hours are private.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church.
Arrangements are by the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
