Thomas D. Phillips Sr., 72 of County Highway 106, Johnstown, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Born in Amsterdam on March 15, 1931 a son of Ray and Ann Phillips. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Mr. Phillips was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War serving aboard the U.S.S. Tarawa Aircraft Carrier CV 40. After the war he was employed for over 15 years at Service Liquor in Schenectady working in the warehouse and later at the Schenectady Buy Rite.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #7629 4th Degree in Broadalbin, NY, and a member of the John A. Baird VFW #8690 also of Broadalbin. He was a member of the Irish American Club in Amsterdam.
Mr. Phillips was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam and was a Eucharistic Minister. He ministered to various nursing homes and many infirmed in the Amsterdam area.
Mr. Phillips at one time was a coach and president of the Amsterdam Senior Babe Ruth League. He was a former member of the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps and was a former crew chief. He was a former liaison for the Perth Youth Commission and was a member and past president of the Perth Senior Citizens. He enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren and family.
Mr. Phillips was currently serving on the Perth Town Council.
He married Margaret A. Soulla Phillips on February 2, 1958.
In addition to his beloved wife survivors include, two loving sons, Thomas D. Phillips Jr. and his wife Kathy of Broadalbin and Brian F. Phillips and his wife Debra of Johnstown; one dear brother, Raymond Phillips of Pleasant Valley, NY; one dear sister, Dorothy Shields of Amsterdam; three cherished grandchildren, Brandon T. Phillips, Sarah E. Francisco and her husband Richard Francisco and Ashley A. Phillips; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY.
The VFW Post #8690 will meet Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home and the Knights of Columbus will meet Friday at 7:30 p.m. for a service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, P.O. Box 699, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
Catherine L. Olbrycht

Mrs. Catherine L. Olbrycht, 83, formerly of Edison Street died Tuesday evening at Mount Loretto Nursing Home.
Born on October 29, 1919 in Amsterdam she was the daughter of Joseph and Magadalena Partyka Ofiara. She attended Amsterdam schools and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Olbrycht was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and it's Ladies Rosary Society. She was a devoted grandmother. She loved the outdoors especially gardening. She also enjoyed cooking.
She was employed by various local mills.
She was married to Thaddeus J. Olbrycht on June 12, 1938. He died on November 18, 2001.
Mrs. Olbrycht is survived by two sons, Thaddeus A. Olbrycht and his wife Sally and Robert J. Olbrycht and his wife Mary all of Amsterdam; one brother, Edward Ofiara of Port Ritchie, Florida; one sister, Helen Bylebyl of Boca Raton, Florida; six grandchildren, Matthew Olbrycht, Valerie Mesick and Ted J. Olbrycht all of Amsterdam, Christine LaTour of Tribes Hill, Jessica Olbrycht of New York City and Jason Olbrycht of Boston, MA; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Henry Ofiara, Walter Ofiara and Albert Ofiara.
Funeral services will be held 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place followed at 9:00 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church.
Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours will be this (Thursday) afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and in the evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The Ladies Rosary Society will conduct a service at 7:15 p.m.
Donations may be made in Mrs.. Olbrycht's memory to the Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern New York Chapter, 1717 Central Avenue, Suite 105, Albany, New York 12205.
Rudolph Felczak
July 25, 2003
Mr. Rudolph G. Felczak, 72, of Brandywine Avenue, Schenectady, died Friday evening at St. Clare's Hospital.
Born in Amsterdam on Nov. 17, 1930, he was the son of Anthony and Elizabeth Pabis Felczak. He attended Amsterdam schools and was a 1948 graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Felczak was a Korean conflict Army veteran.
He was employed by the Capital District Transit Authority until his retirement. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Schenectady. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 357, Schenectady, the Polish American Veterans, the Polish National Alliance of Amsterdam and the Schenectady Musicians Local 85.
Mr. Felczak was the beloved husband of 39 years to Patricia Felczak, whom he married on June 12, 1964; the loving father of Linda Ferrucci and her husband, Jeff of Amsterdam, Shirley Flanders and her husband, Clinton, Michael Felczak and his wife, Leslie, Timothy Felczak and Susan August and her husband, Carl, all of Schenectady; grandfather of 11 and a brother of Theresa Szewczak of Amsterdam. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam, with the Rev. John Medwid officiating. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Monday afternoon from 5 to 8 in the evening at the funeral home.
At the family's request, donations may be made in Mr. Felczak's memory to the American Heart Association, Northeastern Area, 440 New Karner Road, Colonie, N.Y., 12205-3890.
Clara Bronk
July 25, 2003
Mrs. Clara B. Bronk, 82, formerly of Maple Avenue, Canajoharie, current resident of Palatine Nursing Home, Palatine Bridge, died Friday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam following a long illness.
Born on Dec. 10, 1920 in Charleston Four Corners, she was the daughter of Clarence and Madge McDuffie Bell. Mrs. Bronk was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Fultonville High School, moving to Canajoharie in 1952.
She was first employed by Arkell and Smith before going to work for Beech-Nut Lifesavers for many years until her retirement.
She was of the Methodist faith.
Mrs. Bronk was first married in 1942 to Robert E. Shaul. He died in 1966. She later married Edward Bronk, who died in 2000. She was also predeceased by a brother, Richard Bell and a sister, Thelma Bell.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald Shaul and his wife, Iris of Canajoharie and William R. Shaul of Canajoharie; a daughter, Lorraine Shaul of Palatine Bridge; a brother, Dewey G. Bell of Charleston Four Corners; four grandchildren, Gerald E. Shaul Jr., Robert F. Shaul, Tracy Vellucci and James A. Shaul; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Lenz and Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie. The burial will take place in the Canajoharie Falls Cemetery, Canajoharie.
The family will receive relatives and friend on Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer's Association.
Mac "Matthew" J. Szala
July 30, 2003
Mr. Mac "Matthew" J. Szala, 76, of Fairmount Avenue passed away Wednesday morning at home.
He was born September 9, 1926 in Amsterdam, New York a son of the late John and Mary Barczak Szala. He was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School and always lived here.
During World War II, Mr. Szala served in the Army with the 341st Infantry Regiment in the Pacific.
He was first employed by the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Company.
For several years he was employed by Consolidated Diesel in Schenectady, New York before retiring in 1977.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and it's St. Michael the Archangel Society. He was also a member of the Polish-American Veterans.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years Dolores Niski Szala whom he married August 14, 1949. His devoted children Lawrence (Debbie) Szala, Glenville, New York, Timothy Szala, Amsterdam, New York, and Joan (Michael) Downey, Amsterdam, New York; his cherished grandchildren, Brian Downey, Nicole Szala, Christopher Szala, Kristen Downey and Jackie Szala; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held 8:30 Saturday morning at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church Street followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 o'clock at St. Stanislaus Church.
Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Hospice of Amsterdam, St. Stanislaus Church Renovation Fund or the American Cancer Society.
John F. Lukas
July 26, 2003
Services were held for John F. Lukas, 82 of Elizabeth Street, Rotterdam, who died Saturday at St. Clare's Hospital.
Born in Schenectady, John served with the United States Marines Corps during WWII from 1942-1945.
Upon return from the service John began his career as a letter carrier in both the Schenectady post office and retiring from the Niskayuna post office.
John belonged to the U.S. Marine Corps League in Albany, the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Hilderbrand Post #1895, the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 88, the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 358, the Rotterdam Democratic Club, a retired member of the Rotterdam Volunteer Fire Department, District 2.
John also was a member and the 1st installed Chaplain of the Rotterdam Elks Lodge 2157.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Zelazny Lukas; one daughter, Sharon Hayes and her husband Gary of Johnstown; two grandchildren, John Hayes and Jackie Bull and her husband Ronald both of Johnstown; two step grandchildren, Gary Hayes and his wife Jing of Fort Myers, Florida and Tina Ferrara and her husband Chris of Schenectady; three great grandchildren, Jason, Lukas and Mitchell; two step great grandchildren, Rita and Zoe. He is also survived by one sister and several nieces and nephews.
Private services were held at the convenience of the family.
It was requested that there were no calling hours.
Burial, with full military honors, was held in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
Those wishing to remember John in a special way may send contributions to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union Street, Schenectady or to the charity of one's choice.

Ruth N. Knoeck

Mrs. Ruth N. Knoeck, 81, of Bauder Road, Fort Plain, NY died Saturday, August 2, 2003 at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond and Carol Gould after a brief illness.
She was born December 27, 1921 in Roseboom, NY a daughter of George and Ina Morton Whiteman.
Mrs. Knoeck was educated at Cherry Valley High School.
Mrs. Knoeck was a mother and homemaker.
She was a lifelong area resident. She was the former Treasurer in the Democratic Committee. She completed her husband's term as Councilman for the Town of Minden.
Mrs. Knoeck was of the Christian faith.
She was a member of the Hallsville Grange and the Women's Home Bureau of the town of Minden.
She was married to Leo J. Knoeck on May 18, 1940 in Fort Plain, NY. He died on November 21, 1993.
Survivors include one grandson, Kevin Gould, Emmaus, PA; one granddaughter, Wanda Eick, Fort Plain, NY; two great grandsons, David Gould, Emmaus, PA and Cody Eick of Fort Plain, NY; four sisters, Mary Dingman, Salt Springville, NY, Irene Judkins, Oneonta, NY, Loretta Moyer, Middlefield, NY and Margaret Sitterly; one dear companion, Warren Casler, Fort Plain, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Carol M. Gould in 1973; two brothers, Fred and Stewart Whiteman; two sisters, Helen Whiteman Schaffer and Hilda Moulder; and one half brother, Irvin Genter.
An 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY, with Pastor Alan Potter of Ames Cornerstone Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Monday evening, August 4, 2003.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Ruth N. Knoeck to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 North Main Street, Gloversville, NY 12078.
Frances I. Janis

Mrs. Frances I. Janis, 81, of Pioneer Street, Amsterdam passed away Sunday evening at her home after a long illness.
Born on September 28, 1921 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Frank and Veronica Satas. She was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and attended local schools.
Mrs. Janis was employed by G.E. in Schenectady during the early 1940's until going to work for Esquire Novelty in Amsterdam for many years until her retirement.
She was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam, a member of St. Casimir's Ladies Auxiliary and the St. Casimir's Seniors, where she served as treasure at one time.
She was married on June 15, 1947 to George P. Janis. He died on January 23, 1981.
Survivors include her loving daughters, Georgianne Constantino and her husband, John of Perth, NY, Barbara DaBaire of Clearwater, FL, Michele Kazala and her husband, Keith of Amsterdam, Carol Riberdy and her husband, Neil of Dolgeville, NY, and Nina Knapp and her husband, Stewart of Altamont, NY; a dear brother, Stephen Satas of Amsterdam; eight cherished grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be Celebrated at 9:00 a.m. at the St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, East Main Street, Amsterdam with the Rev. Stanley Swierzowski officiating.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home where a Legacy Candle Ceremony will be held at 7:45 p.m. St. Casimir's Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 6:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Casimir's Memorial Fund, 260 East Main Street, or Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 246 Manny Corners Road, Amsterdam.
June Lee Bowen

June Lee Bowen, 58, of Oak Brook Manor, Ravena, passed away Friday at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Born in Niskayuna, NY on September 27, 1944 a daughter of Frank and Mildred Vesely Cistin. She had been a resident of Hillside House of Coeymans, Inc., on Oak Brook Manor in Ravena for over 20 years.
June worked for the Center for the Disabled AARC in Albany, New York and enjoyed tennis and bowling in her spare time.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She married Donald Bowen in January 1988.
In addition to her husband survivors include her step father, Everett Kellam of Ravena, NY; one sister, Carol Jordan of Amsterdam, several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam,
Interment will follow in Schenectady Memorial Park.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for the Disabled, 314 South Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208.
