Jean Gloria Winkler
October 5, 2003
Jean Gloria Winkler, formerly residing in Schenectady, New York, died on October 5, 2003, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Mrs. Winkler moved to Knoxville with her husband of 50 years, Hubert Winkler, where they were cared for during a lengthy illnesses by their daughter Madeline and son-in-law Wayne Kline. Hubert died in 1996.
Jean was born in Amsterdam, New York on November 9, 1924 to the late Mary and Joseph Morrell. She graduated from Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam and the Mildred Elley School of Business. Jean worked at General Electric in Schenectady and VITA (Volunteers International for Technical Assistance) at Union College. She also worked at WSNY Radio station in Schenectady and for the Corporation Tax Department of New York State in Albany.
Jean supported and was a lover of the art of dance. She enjoyed attending and supporting the many activities of her grandchildren. She was a loving mother. Hubert and Jean had two daughters, Madeline and Wendy and five cherished grandchildren.
Jean is survived by Madeline and Wayne and granddaughters Lindsay and Abbey Kline of Knoxville, Tennessee; Wendy Taylor and Elliot Pagliaccio and grandchildren, Spencer and Alex Taylor and Libby Pagliaccio of Schenectady, New York.
She is survived also by her niece and nephew Jennifer Turro and Fritz Wahl, and extended family Mary Winkler, Agnes Tripolo, Anna Winkler, Lois Frame, their families and the Morrell, Winkler and Pisano progeny.
Jean was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law Madeline and Burton Wahl.
Funeral service are Saturday morning 8:15 a.m. from the Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady and 9:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, State Street, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Calling hours are Friday evening 6:30 to 9:00 at the funeral home. Interment is in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Jean Winkler Memorial Fund at NHC Cavett Hill, Farragut, Tennessee, 37922.

Alexander "Alex" Liska
October 1, 2003
Mr. Alexander "Alex" Liska, 86, of Pulaski Street, Amsterdam died Wednesday morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born on April 24, 1917 in Jersey City, New Jersey he was the son of John and Susie Heczick Liska. Mr. Liska was educated in New Jersey.
Mr. Liska lived in the Saratoga Springs area for over 21 years and during World War II Mr. Liska worked in the foundry at G.E. until starting his own foundry in the Town of Milton. In 1951 he began a contracting business and built many homes in the Saratoga Springs area until his retirement. He also built, owned and operated the Alexander Arms Apartments in Saratoga. After his retirement Mr. Liska lived in Port St. Lucie, Fl for nine years until moving back to the local area in 2001 and living in Amsterdam, NY.
Mr. Liska was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic of Amsterdam and was a member of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Langelier Young Liska whom he married in 1971; a son, Phillip Liska of Malta, NY; three stepsons, Bruce Young of Gloversville, Brian Young of Gansevort, NY and Allen Young of Troy, NY; two brothers, Peter Liska of Greenfield, NY and Frank Liska of California; two sisters, Pauline Medvic of Saratoga, and Emily Willie of California; a granddaughter, Chrissy Manolakis of Malta; six step grandchildren; a great granddaughter, Megan Manolakis and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 4, 2003 at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial that was celebrated at 9:15 a.m. at the St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Amsterdam.
Burial was in place in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Calling hours were held on Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to GAVAC.

Timothy J. VanAlstine
October 4, 2003
Mr. Timothy J. VanAlstine, 57, of Darge Dr., Apopka, Florida, (formerly of Ames, NY) died on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Florida Central Regional Hospital after a long illness.
Mr. VanAlstine was born on August 27, 1946 in Amsterdam, New York the son of Harold and Mary C. Conrad VanAlstine.
Mr. VanAlstine was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, Class of 1964. While in high school, he played in a band called the Diabolos which went on to represent Montgomery County at the World Fair in New York City.
Mr. VanAlstine was most recently the owner and operator of the Black Gold Seal Coat in Florida.
Previously, he was employed at the former Ray Kimball Electric in Nelliston, NY and Ames Building Supplies as a electrician.
Mr. VanAlstine was a resident of Florida since 1976, previously living in Canajoharie, NY. He was Veteran of Viet Nam serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1964-1968 and was of the Protestant Faith.
He was a member of the VFW Post #2093, the American Legion Post #19 and the Shriner "Babia Temple" all of Orlando, Florida. He was also a member of F.A.A.M Hamilton Lodge #79 in Canajoharie, NY.
He was a avid painter of landscapes and enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved animals.
He married the former Karen Jeanne Smith of Sprout Brook, on October 1, 1966 in Fort Plain, NY.
Survivors include his wife Karen J. VanAlstine of Apopka, FL; his mother, Mary C. VanAlstine of Canajoharie, NY; two sons, James P. VanAlstine and his wife, SSG. Lani (Ferrell) of Apopka, FL, and 1st Lt. Timothy J. VanAlstine and his wife, Beth (Hull) of Longwood, FL and stationed in Germany; one daughter, Teresa L. and her husband, Billy Dalton Dixon of Apopka, FL; eight grandchildren, James and Reed VanAlstine, Justin, Jarrod, Ashley and Devan Dixon all of Apopka, FL and Cayla and Tyler VanAlstine of Longwood, FL; one sister, Bonnie Chanell and her husband, Tom of Fultonville, NY; one brother, Terry VanAlstine and his wife, Janyce (Jones) of Palatine Bridge, NY; one cousin, several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his father, Harold VanAlstine, July 28, 1985.
A 2:00 p.m. Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2003 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating.
Burial will be in the Mapletown Cemetery in Canajoharie with full military honors conducted at graveside by the Fort Plain VFW Earl Stock Memorial Post #3275.
Family will receive friends and relatives from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service on October 12 at the funeral home.

Bernice Leszczynski
October 2, 2003
Mrs. Bernice Leszczynski, 97, formerly of Church Street, Amsterdam died Thursday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility.
Born in Amsterdam she was the daughter of Frank and Clementine Przybylowski. Litwa She was educated in local schools and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Leszczynski was at one time employed by the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mills and later by M. Lurie Co. She subsequently worked for the former Big N until retiring. She was a member of the Church of Saint John the Baptist and it's Ladies' Rosary Society.
Mrs. Leszczynski was married to Peter John Leszczynski for 61 years. They were married on May 24, 1930. He died on September 30, 1991.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Thomas P. Lacey and his wife, Beverly of Ludlow, Vermont and Raymond F. Leszczynski and his wife, Diane of Auburn, New York; one sister, Violet Zelonka of Amsterdam; seven grandchildren, Kevin Lacey of Great Fall, Montana, Kimberly Miller of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Kristen Snow of Salt Lake City, Utah, Kirk Leszczynski, Jamie Leszczynski, Jason Leszczynski and Justin Leszczynski all of Auburn; three great grandchildren, Kate Miller, Darby Lacey and Jack Miller; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is predeceased by one sister, Winifred Adamski.
Funeral services will be held 9;00 a.m. Friday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 9:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of Saint John the Baptist.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Thursday afternoon from 4:00 to 8:00p.m. in the evening at the funeral chapel.
Donations may be made in Mrs. Leszczynski memory to the Church of Saint John the Baptist or to Meals on Wheels, 17 Carmen Court, Palatine Bridge, NY 13428.

Ruth P. Bode
October 3, 2003
Ruth P. Bode, 96, formerly of Fonda, died October 3, 2003 at the Mariner South West Nursing Home in Houston, Texas.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert F. Bode who died January 4, 1988.
Mrs. Bode was a teacher for many years in both the Johnstown and Fonda Fultonville School Districts. She was a member of the Fonda Reformed Church.
She is survived by her children, James W. Bode and his wife, Sheila, of Fonda, Lewis F. Bode and his wife, Joyce of Fonda; a daughter, Alice Michelson of Missouri City, Texas and son, Edward Bode of Gloversville; nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda at the convenience of the family.

Charlotte Carter
October 7, 2003
Charlotte Carter, 68, of 5 Ann Street, St. Johnsville, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, NY.
She was born April 2, 1935, in St. Johnsville the daughter of the Frederick and Pearl (Lieber) Carter.
Charlotte was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School, class of 1953 and was a life long resident of the St. Johnsville area.
Charlotte was last employed at Ideal Wood Products in Little Falls and at one time she worked at the former Little Falls Felt Shoe Co.
Miss Carter was of the Protestant faith and was an avid bowler, bowling in St. Johnsville, Canajoharie and Fort Plain leagues. She was also a former member of the St. Johnsville Volunteer Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary.
Survivors include her sister, Marian (Dolly) Smith of St. Johnsville, many nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, and several great, great nieces and nephews and several cousins; an aunt, Mildred House of Rochester; and her feline companion, Coco.
She was predeceased by two brothers, William and Richard Carter and a nephew, Brian Smith.
Friends and relatives may call at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, St. Johnsville on Thursday, October 9, 2003 from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Funeral services and interment will be at a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a charity of one's choice.

Norman Kneeskern Sr.
October 11, 2003
Norman L. Kneeskern Sr., 84, of Stone Arabia Road, Nelliston, died early Saturday morning at home after being stricken.
Born on March 2, 1919 in Rockwood, he was the son of Charles and Minnie Polmateer Kneeskern. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
During World War II he served with the 470th Anti-Aircraft Battalion of the U.S. Army, serving in Luzon, New Guinea, Australia and the Philippines.
He was employed by Beech-Nut for over 20 years until retiring as battery shop supervisor in 1981.
Norman loved to spend his time outdoors working in his vegetable garden, growing beautiful flowers, tending to his fruit trees and grape vines or just feeding the birds. He also liked to spend his time as a mechanic working on engines and collected and worked on model trains.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Eckler Kneeskern, whom he married on June 23, 1939; a son, Norman Kneeskern Jr. and his wife, Sharon of Nelliston; a daughter, Cheryl Loadwick and her husband, Gary of Canajoharie; a sister, Lenora Brown of Selkirk; four grandchildren, Sarah and Emily Loadwick and Holly and Stephen Kneeskern; nieces; nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Lenz and Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie. The burial will take place in the Fort Plain Cemetery.
Calling hours are Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Joyce B. Fuller
October 11, 2003
Joyce B. Fuller, 72, of North First Street, Northville died Saturday, October 11, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
She was born December 22, 1930 in Scotia, NY the daughter of the late George B. and Myrtle Cady Phillips.
Joyce was a graduate of Scotia High School, class of 1948 and then was employed as an executive secretary for Schenectady Chamber of Commerce.
She then married George L. Fuller Jr. on April 8, 1950; he predeceased her January 31, 1993.
She was later employed by the Northville Central School, retiring in 1988.
Joyce was a member of the Northville United Methodist Church, a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program, a board member of the Northville Public Library for ten years and was still working as a volunteer at the Library.
Survivors include three daughters, Diane and her husband Carl Vallieu of Mayfield, NY, Patricia and her husband Calvin Nephew of Mineville, NY, and Nancy and her husband Michael Hadland of Northville, NY; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren and many dear friends also survive her.
She was predeceased by her brother Maxwell Phillips and grandson Victor Vallieu.
Friends may call Tuesday, October 14, 2003 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Northville Funeral Home where funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at 2:00 p.m.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice or the Northville Library.

Nelson Monroe Kiernan
October 13, 2003
Nelson Monroe Kiernan of Gloversville, passed away October 13, 2003 at the Nathan Littauer Nursing Home of complications from Parkinson's Disease. He was 78.
Mr. Kiernan was born March 4, 1925 in Gloversville, the son of the late Frank and Florence Hollet Kiernan. He was a graduate from Gloversville High School in 1942. Following wartime service in the U.S. Navy he then graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1947, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Fraternity.
Nelson married Monica H. Smith in 1947.
He was vice president (and chief pilot) of Harold J. Smith Leather Corp. until 1970, when he founded Kiernan-State Street Leather Corporation. He remained president until his death.
Over his lifetime, Mr. Kiernan was an avid skier, golfer, fisherman and traveler. He served on the board of directors of Nathan Littauer Hospital and Nursing Home and its parent Colonial Healthcare Corp.) from 1965-1996 and was elected director emeritus in 1996. During his tenure, he served on various committees including extended care, interhospital liaison, laboratory, planning, capital acquisitions, personnel and executive. He was a former member of the Pine Brook Golf Club, The Antlers Country Club, The Mid Ocean Club (Bermuda), The Bourbonais (Quebec), The Eccentric Club, and The Lexington Foundation Board of Directors.
Mr. Kiernan is survived by his wife, Monica; and his children, Susan of Gloversville, Michael of Gloversville, Linda of Wanaque, NJ, Jennifer and her husband David Moran of So. China, ME, and Peter and his wife Shawn Cleland of Caroga Lake. He is also survived by his brother, Paul Hollet Kiernan of London, England and grandchildren, Kimberly, Christine, Daniel, John and Maria.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, October 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Street, Gloversville.
Interment is in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown, NY.
Contributions in Nelson's memory may be made to the Nathan Littauer Foundation, 99 E. State Street, Gloversville, NY 12078.

Fred Guido Scarano
October 9, 2003
Mr. Fred Guido Scarano, age 79, formerly of 2 Arthur Street, Little Falls and most recently residing at 451 State Highway 163, Fort Plain, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Thursday evening, October 9, 2003. He was surrounded with the love and support of his family at his bedside a the time of his passing, which occurred in his home.
Visitation was at the Enea Funeral Home, 24 Monroe Street, Little Falls on Sunday, October 12th from 5-8 p.m.
Fred's funeral was from the Enea Funeral Home, Little Falls at 10:15 Monday, October 13 and then proceeded to Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Albany Street, Little Falls, where a Mass of Resurrection was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. A funeral procession followed to St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer, where he was laid to rest. The United States Marine Corps offered full military honors. Members of the Herkimer VFW formed an honor guard.
Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
