Eleanor Horning
July 13, 1996
Eleanor T. Horning, 69, of Dillenbeck Road, Palatine Bridge, died Saturday at Bassett Health Care in Cooperstown after a long illness.
Born in Cherry Valley, May 19, 1927, she was the daughter of Edgar Spencer and Bertha Eckerson. She graduated from Fultonville High School in 1944.
She moved to Palatine Bridge from the Town of Root in 1972.
Mrs. Horning was a machine operator at the Beech-Nut Life Savers Corp. in Canajoharie for 30 years, retiring in 1985.
After her retirement, she spent winters in St. Cloud, Fla.
She was a member of the Canajoharie United Methodist Church and the Cross Trails Square Dance Club.
Survivors include her husband, Alfred A. Horning, whom she married Feb. 2, 1974; two daughters, Donna Marie Jones of Nelliston and Peggy Lee Allen of Canajoharie; a son, Dale Lisle Post of Gloversville; a stepson, Richard Horning of Gloversville; a step-daughter, Sandra Gibson of Canajoharie; a brother, Carl Spencer of Ballston Lake; a sister, Doris McCaffery of St. Cloud, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Elvira Fletcher
July 14, 1996
Elvira M. Fletcher, 73, of State Highway 29, Gloversville, died Sunday morning at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after being stricken.
Born Oct. 13, 1922, in the Town of Mayfield, she was the daughter of John P. and Jessie E. Wert Fletcher.
She was a lifelong area resident and was educated in Broadalbin schools.
Miss Fletcher worked in the shipping department of several area glove shops, including the former Spear Gloves in Gloversville, and for 20 years at the former Crescendoe Glove Company in Gloversville until 1974.
She is survived by a brother, Woodrow W. Fletcher of Gloversville; a sister, Charlotte J. Fletcher, also of Gloversville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with the revs. Matthew Collins and Herbert Johnson officiating.
Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 261, Gloversville, or to St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.

Clarence Smith
July 15, 1996
Clarence Smith, 73, of 307 Pennsylvania Ave., Johnstown, died Monday at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, following a long illness.
Born April 23, 1923, in Caroga Lake, he was the son of William and Lillian Smith. He lived in Mayfield for 17 years before moving to Johnstown in 1983.
Mr. Smith was an Army veteran of World War II.
He worked at the former G. Levor and Co. in Gloversville until it closed. He was later employed as a forklift operator for about 20 years at Coleco Industries on Patch Road in Mayfield, retiring in 1988.
Mr. Smith attended the Wesleyan Church of Gloversville.
He married Marion Leona Smith May 11, 1946. She died Oct. 7, 1992.
He is survived by a daughter, Sharon J. Walker of Mayfield; a son, Gary D. Smith of Johnstown; a brother, Kenneth Smith of Oregon; a sister, Shirley Coons of Meco; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Mark Bailey, pastor of the Wesleyan Church, officiating.
Interment will be Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 311 Turner St., Suite 415, Utica 13501.

Helen Olbrych
July 15, 1996
Helen M. Olbrych, 89, of Milton Avenue, Amsterdam, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born in Amsterdam Feb. 13, 1907, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Szufnara Zielinski.
Mrs. Olbrych was a lifelong area resident, and was educated locally.
She worked for the former Bigelow Sanford Carpet Mills and later for the New York State Tax Department.
Mrs. Olbrych was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist and its Rosary Society.
She was married to Stanley Olbrych, who died in 1980.
Survivors include a brother, Peter Zielinski of Amsterdam; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy Olbrych who died in 1986.
Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. John the Baptist.
Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours are Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to Hospice of Amsterdam.

Marian DelVecchio
July 13, 1996
Marian T. DelVecchio, 65, former Democratic Commissioner of the Saratoga County Board off Elections, died Saturday at Saratoga Hospital.
Born Nov. 14, 1930, in Troy, she had resided in Keeseville before moving to Saratoga Springs more than 50 years ago.
She was a 1948 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School and worked for the General Electric Co. in Schenectady for several years. Appointed to the election board office in 1964 as a deputy, she served for 26 years as the longest tenured commissioner of elections in the state. She retired in 1994.
She was predeceased by her husband, John J. DelVecchio Sr., who died Jan. 13, 1993.
Mrs. DelVecchio is survived by three daughters, Marian DelVecchio-Ross of Galway, Michele M. Phillips of Saratoga Springs and Lisa G. Doriski of Greenwich; a son, John J. DelVecchio Jr. of Galway; two sisters, Janice Wall of Albany and Shirley O'Connor of Colonie; three brothers, Alfred (Jack) Wright Jr., of Menands, Richard Wright of Binghamton and Robert Wright of Albany; three grandchildren; aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway, Saratoga Springs.
Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Avenue.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs.
Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Family and Community Services of Saratoga County or to Saratoga Friends of Hospice.

Dorothy Dybowski of McCaffrey Avenue, Amsterdam, died this morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

Clarence Kosinski of Upper Locust Avenue, Amsterdam, died Monday evening at the Albany Medical Center.

Emery Sheridan
July 18, 1996
Emery E. Sheridan, 72, of Midline Road, Amsterdam, died Thursday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born in Amsterdam June 14, 1924, the son of Emery and Elizabeth Wallin Sheridan, he was a lifelong resident.
Mr. Sheridan was educated in the Amsterdam School System. He was employed by the Federal Government with security at the Voorheesville Supply Depot, and the Leo W. O'Brien Federal Building in Albany. He retired in 1982.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and served in Europe as a tank gunman from 1943 to 1946.
Mr. Sheridan was of the Catholic Faith.
He was a former member of the Elks Lodge 101, and a member of the Arthur Carter Municipal Golf Course.
Survivors include his wife, the former Sarah Lee Sheridan, whom he married in 1975; one brother, Wallin J. Sheridan of Fonda; one sister, Virginia Litwa of Amsterdam; three step-children, Ernest Perretta of Okinawa, Japan; David Perretta of Nashville, Tenn., and Mary Lou Holloway of Albany; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins and several step-grandchildren.
Private services will be held Saturday at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., with Dr. Thomas Mithen officiating.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Richard Murray
July 17, 1996
Richard "Dick" R. Murray, 69, of Bossi Lane, Guilderland, died Wednesday at home.
Born in Whitesboro on June 20, 1927, he was the son of Sydney and Anna Murray. He attended city schools and after high school he went into the Army. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947.
He graduated from RPI in Troy in 1952, with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. During his hears at RPI he played hockey. He received his master's degree in mechanics in 1955 while working full time with the Rensselaer Health Department and then Keis & Holroyd Engineering Firm in Troy. In 1953 he went with the State Office of General Services and in 1964 to the New York State University central office, where he stayed as director of Engineering Services until his retirement in 1991. He received his professional engineering license in 1957.
He served as Town of Guilderland Zoning Board of Appeals Chairman from 1981 to 1983; Town of Guilderland Planning Board member, from 1977 to 1980; Town of Guilderland Youth Commission member, 1977 to 1980; Fort Hunter Water District Board member, 1984 to present; Guilderland Town Board, 1984 to present; Town of Guilderland Republican Committee, 1973 to present; Guilderland Central School District Continuing Ed. Advisory Committee, from 1979 to present; Western Turnpike Rescue Squad member, 1980 to 1983; a member of VFW Post No. 5294; Guilderland Elks No. 2480; a member of Lynnwood Reformed Church and its part-time Choir, is a past Decon and a member of Church's Mens Brotherhood, RPI's Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and past president of its Housing Association (president for 25 years); Tri-City Youth Hockey in Troy ; and assistant Scout Master, Boy Scouts of America for eight years in Guilderland.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Marie Heiser Murray; one son, James Murray of Rotterdam; one daughter, Jane Pfaffenbach of Rotterdam; one brother, Robert Murray of Amsterdam; two sisters, Jean Graff of Amsterdam; and Mary Ellen Dixon of Hanlon, Iowa and four grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lynnwood Reformed Church, Carmen Road.
Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 5216 Western Turnpike, Guilderland.
Interment is in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.

Anna Jarosik
July 17, 1996
Mrs. Anna Jarosik, 90, of Sharon Springs, died Wednesday at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, after a short illness.
Mrs. Jarosik was born in Vienna, Austria. She fled to Lincoln, England, during World War II. She encountered difficulty obtaining a visa to enter the United States and wrote for help from Eleanor Roosevelt, who assisted her.
A resident of Sharon Springs for the past five years, she had previously lived at the Isabella House in Manhattan.
She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Columbia University. She was a former teacher at the National Council of Jewish Women Day Care Center in Brooklyn.
She was the widow of Joseph "Pepe" Jarosik.
Survivors include a niece, Eva Moseley of Cambridge, Mass., a nephew, Paul Steiner-Cotati of California and her caregivers, Gloria and Fred Santillo of Sharon Springs.
A private memorial service will be held.
There are no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Lappeus Funeral Home.

Bob Lubin Ekstein
July 17, 1996
Bob Lubin Ekstein, 83, of 6817 E. Pointe Pine St., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., formerly of Gloversville, died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital, West Palm Beach, from injuries sustained in an auto/pedestrian accident last week.
Born in St. Louis, Mr. Ekstein lived most of his life in Gloversville. He was a certified public accountant before retiring in 1986 and moving to Florida.
He was a member of Knesseth Israel Synagogue in Gloversville.
Mr. Ekstein was the widower of his first wife Eisenberg Ekstein.
Survivors include his wife, Esther Korman Ekstein, three sons, Alan R. Ekstein of Delmar, and Myron and Carl Ekstein, both of New York City; two stepsons, Howard Korman of Jacksonville, Fla., and Steven Korman of Milford, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Reyna Horner of Jacksonville; two sisters, Mary Silverman of New York City and Naomi Ekstein of Florida; and six grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave.
Burial will be in Beth Emeth Cemetery, Turner Lane, Loudonville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Knesseth Israel Synagogue, 84 E. Fulton St., Gloversville, 12078.
