Robert Brearey
October 20, 2003
Mr. Robert Brearey, 76, of Prospect Street, Nelliston, NY died Monday, October 20, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, NY following a brief illness.
Bob was born on June 3, 1927 in Rochester, NY the son of Thomas and Elsie Latten Brearey. He was a graduate of Ithaca High School, Class of 1945 and Ithaca College in 1950. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Music Education in 1960 and a Masters Degree in Administration from Rutgers College in New Jersey.
Bob was most recently employed as Superintendent of the Fort Plain Central School District retiring in 1983. Prior to coming to Fort Plain in 1972, he was the Supervising Principal at Houndsfield Central School and Sackets Harbor. Previous to that, Bob was the Supervising Principal at McGraw Central School for seven years and District Principal at Union free School in Dannemora. He began his career in education by teaching Instrumental Music in Malone for two years and New Paltz for nine years. He has been an area resident of Nelliston since 1972 and prior to that of Sackets Harbor.
Bob was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Fort Plain United Methodist Church and former Choir Director of the church. He was a former Board Member of the Fort Plain Central School, former member of the Lions Club, past President of the Fort Plain Rotary and former member of the F & AM of Fort Plain, Lodge #443. He is a current member of the Canajoharie/ Fort Plain B.P.O.E. Lodge #2621, Fort Plain American Legion Post #554 and Loyal Order of the Moose #853 of Canajoharie.
On June 11, 1950, Bob married the former Jean Bedson in Remsenburg on Long Island.
He is predeceased by one grandson, Thomas Brearey.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Brearey of Nelliston; three daughters, Susan J. Karmo of Guilderland, Cynthia C. Summerfield of Nelliston, Pamela J. Pakenas of Amsterdam and one son, Robert R. Brearey of Oakdale, Minnesota; one sister, Jean Carney of Rochester; five granddaughters, one grandson and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A 10:00 a.m. memorial service will be held on Friday, October 24, 2003 at the Fort Plain United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carter Adriance officiating.
Burial will follow in the Fort Plain Cemetery with full military honors at graveside conducted by the Fort Plain VFW Earl Stock Memorial Post #3275.
Family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, October 23 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain.

Theodore J. Gorzynski
October 19, 2003
Mr. Theodore J. Gorzynski, 85, of Natick, Massachusetts, formerly of Teller Street, Amsterdam, NY died Sunday, October 19, 2003 at the Hearthstone at Golden Pond in Hopkinton, Massachusetts.
Born in Schenectady, NY he was the son of the late Joseph and Constance Kalinowska Gorzynski.
During World War II, he served in the Army in North Africa and Italy and was awarded the Purple Heart later blessed by Pope Pius XII.
Mr. Gorzynski was a machinist for 37 years at the General Electric Company in Schenectady, NY before retiring.
Mr. Gorzynski was a member of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church.
He was married to Jean B. Piechocki Gorzynski who died in 1990.
He is survived by one son, Edward J. Gorzynski and his wife Diane, Natick, Massachusetts, two sisters, Helen Wilock and Sophie Chmielinski and one brother, Stanley Gorzynski all of Schenectady, NY; two grandchildren, Joseph E. and Jenna L. Gorzynski, Natick, Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held 10:30 Friday morning at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church Street, Amsterdam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 o'clock at St. Stanislaus Church.
Interment will follow at St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours will begin at 9:30 Friday morning.

Mary Louise Bergh

October 19, 2003
Mary Louise Bergh, 95, of Guy Street, Amsterdam, passed away Sunday afternoon at her home.
Born in the village of Schoharie, NY on April 23, 1908 a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Teabout. She was a lifelong area resident and attended Schoharie, NY schools.
Mrs. Bergh worked for over 15 years at the former Textile Workers Union Office in Amsterdam. She later worked as a housekeeper in many private Amsterdam homes.
She was a member of the St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church of Amsterdam.
She was married to Abraham Bergh whom pedeceased her.
Survivors include two sons, George and Richard Bergh, both of Amsterdam; two daughters, Janet Bergh of Amsterdam and Marsha Buckman of Albany, NY; one sister, Beatrice Elderage of Stratford, NY; a god-daughter, Gertruce Bills of Norcross, Georgia; 14 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Isabelle Bergh who died in April of 1999.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam.
Cremation will take place at Vale Cemetery Crematorium in Schenectady.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice c/o Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.

Mary K. Syper
October 19, 2003
Mrs. Mary K. Syper, 68, of Division Street, Amsterdam, passed away Sunday morning October 19, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam on January 13, 1935, she was a daughter of John and Gladys Hine Sweet.
Mrs. Syper received her education and was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute, Amsterdam, NY.
Mrs. Syper was employed at Fownes Bros, & Co., Inc, and retired from the New York State Department of Labor in 1997.
Mrs. Syper was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Amsterdam, NY.
Survivors include her husband, Walter Syper to whom she married on April 11, 1953; three daughters, Debra Baranello and her husband Thomas of Amsterdam, NY, Barbara Kelly of Niskayuna, NY, and Karin Hetrick and her husband Jef also of Niskayuna, NY; one brother, John R. Sweet and his wife JoAnn of Port Chester, NY; one grandson, Andrew Kelly of Niskayuna, NY; one aunt, Ruth Hine of Gloversville, NY; one brother-in-law, Sidge Olszewski of Atlanta, GA; one nephew, Mark Olszewski of Atlanta, GA; one niece, Regina Allan of Port Chester, NY; one great niece, Alexa Allan and one great nephew, David Allan both of Port Chester, NY.
Cremation was held at Park View Crematory, Schenectady, NY.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service which will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2003, at noon, at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY.

Theresa M. MCGillin
October 22, 2003
Theresa M. McGillin, of Lincoln Ave, Amsterdam, passed away on Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of Amsterdam, she was the daughter of the late Pasquale and Giovanna Iannuzzi Lucente.
She was of the Roman Catholic Faith.
Mrs. McGillin was a homemaker, She was married on July 5, 1936 to Eugene F. McGillin who passed away on August 13, 1989.
She was also pre-deceased by her Granddaughter Shelli Ann Calhoun Johnson on June 14, 1999 and two sisters, Helen Vergona and Marion Pitts.
Survivor's include her loving family; four sons, William McGillin and his Shirley, Richard McGillin, Robert McGillin, Thomas McGillin and his wife Linda all of Amsterdam; two daughters, Joan German and her husband Raymond of Amsterdam, and Kathryn Calhoun of Millington, TN; one niece, Mary Jane Allen of Amsterdam; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren also survive.
A private memorial service will be held at St. Mary's cemetery at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY, 12010.

Margaret Weaver
October 21, 2003
Mrs. Margaret Weaver, 93, of Grand Street, Amsterdam passed away Tuesday morning October 21, 2003 at home following a long illness.
Born in Glenanne, Northern Ireland on May 14, 1910, she was a daughter of Samuel and Sarah Martin Kerr.
Mrs. Weaver was employed for 25 years at Mohasco Corp./Mohawk Carpets as a clerical worker, in the accounting department.
Mrs. Weaver was predeceased by her husband Arnold Weaver on August 28, 1968 and is the dear mother and treasured friend of one son, Arnold Weaver of Amsterdam and one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Gerald Tuohy of Franklin, WI; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Mrs. Weaver was predeceased by four sisters and brother.
The family is especially grateful to Gerald and Bonnie Faulds for all of the help and concern they have given to Mrs. Weaver.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hagaman Cemetery, Pawling Street, Hagaman, NY with Hospice Chaplin Rev. John Califano officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial gifts in Mrs. Weaver's name may be made to Hospice of Amsterdam, 246 Manny Corners Road, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Colonel Richard A. Ames Sr.
October 22, 2003
Colonel Richard A. Ames Sr., U.S. Air Force, Retired, a highly decorated veteran from World War II, died at Waldo County General Hospital on October 22, 2003, just a week short of his 92nd birthday. He was born in Lynn, Mass, on October 28, 1911, the son of Avis L. Ames and Corinna Ausin Ames. He left life as he lived it, with courage and dignity and a never failing sense of humor. He was married to Jane Good Ames for 55 years to whom he gave the full measure of his love and devotion to the very end of his liFe.
He is survived by his devoted wife Jane Ames of Northport, Maine. He leaves behind two daughters, three sons, and ten grandchildren; Richard Austin Ames Jr. of Santa Anna, CA; Marilyn and Sean Hardies and children Anna 19, Lauren 17, Sean 12 and John 8 of Amsterdam, NY; Dr. Dawn and Dr. Neal De Vos of Aptos, CA; Jeffrey and Julie Ames and children, Maria 7, Christina 5, and Anna 2 of Valrico, FL; and Randal and Mary Ames and children, Katherine 13, Sarah 12, and Colleen 9, of Elizabethtown, KY.
For his family Col. Ames was a model of intelligence, integrity, energy and kindness.
Col. Ames attended high school in Henniker, NH, and then graduated from Stearns Preparatory School at Mount Vernon, NH. He went on to major in aeronautical engineering at the University of Virginia and the University of Michigan.
Col. Ames began his military career in 1937 when he entered flying cadet training at Randolph Field, Texas. After receiving his commission as a Second Lieutenant, he served a three-year tour at Langley Field, VA. After a year each at Mitchel Field, NY and Charlotte, NC, he received orders assigning him to duty in Europe. He served as a fighter pilot and in numerous command and staff positions in North Africa, Corsica, France, Italy, and Sicily. Highlights of his time in the European theatre of operations include command of one of the first operational radar units in the war, capture of Dictator Mussolini's personal staff, acceptance of surrender by the Commander of the Italia Air Force, and assignment as the personal escort and bodyguard for Prime Minister Churchill. After a short break from the European theatre to attend the Naval War College, Col. Ames was ordered to Japan where he first served on General MacArthur;s staff as the Director of Operations for the Fifth Air Force and theN as Base Commander of Johnson Air Field. Following the War, he returned to the States to serve in the Policy and Plans Division in the Pentagon. It was there that he met and married his lovely wife Jane. Following his Pentagon duty, he graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College and then served for two years in Ankara, with the Joint Military Mission Aid to Turkey. There he was responsible for establishing Turkey's air defense against Russia, a key component of the Marshall Plan. Col Ames completed his illustrious military career as the Senior Air Advisor to the 101st Air Defense Wing, Maine National Air Guard, at Bangor, Maine. His many awards and decorations include the Bronze Star for Heroism, Legion of Merit, the British Oak Leaf Emblem, European, Middle East and Pacific Campaign Medals, Army Operation of Japan, and World War II Victory Medal.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, Col. Ames earned his stock broker's license and worked with Means Investment Company of Bangor, and enjoyed his avocation of farming. He later settled in Northport, and devoted his energies to home renovation, "Flying" his fleet of tractors, and guiding his five children through college, two whom graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
A memorial service will take place on Friday, October 31, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 81 Court Street, Belfast.
A reception will follow at the Parish Hall of the church.
There will be no visitation.
Interment with full military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA in the spring.
Arrangements are under the care of the Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Waldo County General Hospital, 118 Northport Avenue, Belfast, Maine 04915.

Clara K. Reamon
October 25, 2003
Mrs. Clara K. Reamon, 87, of Moyer St., Canajoharie died Saturday evening at her home after a long illness.
Born on June 17, 1916, the daughter of Andrew and Emma Loop Kretser, she was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Mrs. Reamon was employed as a secretary for Ferraro's Ford Motor Co., Canajoharie until going to work for Beech-Nut until her retirement.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a communicant of St. Peter & Pauls Roman Catholic Church, Canajoharie.
Survivors include her husband, Donald H. Reamon whom she married on November 11, 1938; a son, Thomas A. Reamon of Kinderhook, NY; a daughter Patricia M. Palleschi and her husband Alfred of Canajoharie; 3 sisters in-law, Priscilla Fisk of Ft. Plain, Grace Kretser of Sprakers, and Virginia Kretser of Palatine Bridge; five grandchildren, Kristin, Tommy and Lauren Reamon, and Sean and Jason Palleschi; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter & Pauls Roman Catholic Church, Cliff St., Canajoharie with the Rev. William Gaffigan officiating. The burial will take place in the Canajoharie Falls Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 126, Canajoharie, NY 13317, Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 North Main St., Gloversville, NY 12078, or the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter, 133 Hilltop Rd., Sprakers, NY 12166.

Edward Knezich
October 24, 2003
Edward A. Knezich, 81, formerly of Glen Avenue, Amsterdam, passed away Friday evening at Montgomery Meadows.
Born in Amsterdam on December 9, 1921, he was a son of Joseph and Lucy Bussanich Knezich.
Mr. Knezich received his education at the former St. Joseph's School in Amsterdam and was employed by the General Electric Co. in the steam turbine division for 12 years until 1958, New York State Barge Canal System and at the State Capitol as an elevator operator until retiring in 1969.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Knezich served with the 37th General Hospital throughout Europe and Africa.
Mr. Knezich was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and a parishioner of the former St. Joseph's Church, both of Amsterdam.
Mr. Knezich was a life member of the John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701, a 50-year member of the Y.M.C.A. and a former knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 209.
Survivors include a brother, Brother Bernard J. Knezich, F.S.C. Brothers of the Christian Schools, LaSalle Institute, Troy; two sisters, Lucy Vainauskas and Edith Merendo, both of Amsterdam; nieces; nephews and cousins.
Mr. Knezich was predeceased by his brothers, John Knezich, Joseph Knezich and Albert Knezich and by a sister, Jennie Davis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 9:15 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Amsterdam. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Calling hours are Monday evening from 5 to 8 at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam.
Memorial gifts in Mr. Knezich's name may be made to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Cemetery Fund, 39 St. John St., Amsterdam, 12010.
