Mildred E. Engle
December 3, 2003
Mildred E. Engle, 97, passed away quietly early Wednesday morning at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.
She was a resident of the Palatine Nursing Home.
Mildred was born on November 27, 1906 in Fonda to loving parents James D. and Lena Regal Shelp. She was educated in local schools, specially the Nose Hill School in Sprakers and the old Canajoharie High School which was recently demolished. After graduating, Mrs. Engle was gainfully employed by the Beech-Nut Packing Co., and found it very much to her liking. Basically a hard candy machine operator with a splendid personality, many other opportunities became open to her within the company. Promotional events led to Mrs. Engle becoming one of the "original circus girls" that traveled about extensively distribution boxes of assorted candies to children and adults alike. Years later, after moving to Schenectady, Mildred developed a talent for selling and enjoyed several years as principal sales lady for the Imperial Dress Shop. Pride and fashion were her most precious attributes.
On November 15, 1928, she married James B. Engle at the home of her parents in Currytown, NY. Mr. and Mrs. Engel resided in Canajoharie for a number of years before moving to Schenectady and finally to Orange City, Florida where they made their retirement home.
Predeceased by her parents, her husband, a brother Robert Shelp and sisters Irene Fox, and Mary Kemp; she is survived by three wonderful sisters who enjoy the true gift of life. These sisters include Helen Hubschmitt of Nelliston, Gertrude Farroe formerly of Canajoharie who now lives with her son, Dana in Miami, Florida, and Berry Osborn of Fort Plain. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
As a special request of Mrs.. Engle, there will be no calling hours and services are at the convenience of the family.
Interment will take place later in Deland, Florida.
The family has entrusted her arrangements to the care of the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY.

Stanley Piotrowski
December 3,2003
Stanley Piotrowski, 76, of Amsterdam, died on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 after a long illness.
He was a native of Kalisz, Poland. He became a U.S. citizen in 1956.
He worked for the MICA Co. for several years and retired from G.E. after 20 years of service.
He is survived by a daughter, Helen Elizabeth Gohra, a son-in-law, Raymond, and one grandson, Jason, all of Colonie, NY. He is also survived by relatives and friends of Poland and his treasured friend of many years, John Cott of Amsterdam.
Stanley Piotrowski was a donor of the Anatomical Gift Program of Albany Medical College.
There will be no viewing hours or funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Amsterdam, 40 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Dorothy Nolan
November 30, 2003
Dorothy Nolan, 83, passed away November 30 in Sag Harbor, NY. She was the wife of Thomas Nolan.
Survivors include her daughter Kathy Walsh, Canajoharie, NY; grandchildren, Christopher Smith, Thomas Smith, Matthew Smith, Joy Smith and Shawn Walsh and two great granddaughters.
A Memorial Mass will take place December 27, at 11:00 a.m. in St. James Church, Fort Plain, NY.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Elizabeth "Betty" M. Ross
December 3, 2003
Miss Elizabeth "Betty" M. Ross, 87 of Crane Street entered into eternal rest Wednesday evening at home with her family at her side.
She was born May 10, 1916 in Amsterdam, NY a daughter of the late Albert and Catherine Dzikowicz Ruz. She was a graduate of St. Stanislaus School and always resided here.
Betty worked for the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Company, Chalmer's, General Electric Company and lastly for Ward Products Company retiring in 1989.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and it's Rosary Society.
She was also active in various seniors groups and enjoyed all social activities.
She was predeceased by her sister Wanda Ruz.
Survivors include her sisters, Clara Spring, Rochester, NY, Jane Mancini of Amsterdam, Violet Dybas, Hagaman and her brother Albert Roz of Schenectady. Other survivors include loving nieces and nephews, Evelyn (Gerald) Easton, Indiana, Nancy (Tom) Henretty, Hilton, NY, David (Pam) Mancini, Virginia, James (Sue) Mancini, New Jersey, Arlene (Tim)Testa, Cobleskill, NY, Gary (Maryann) Mancini, Clifton Park, NY, Shirley Dybas, Hagaman, Jonathan (Pat) Roz, Castleton, NY, Stephen (Becky) Roz, Ballston Spa, NY, Anne Marie (James) Walrath, Amsterdam, Paul (Jamie) Dybas, Port Crane, NY, Sandra (Randy) Spitz, New Jersey, Thomas Roz, Hopewell Junction, NY; many great nieces and great nephews and great great grand nephews and nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 Saturday morning at St. Stanislaus Church , Cornell Street, Amsterdam, NY.
Calling hours will be this evening (Friday) 6:00-8:00 p.m.at the Jendrzejczak Funeral, 200 Church Street with the Rosary Society conducting services at 7:00 p.m.
Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam in lieu of flowers.

William Arthur Bing III
December 2, 2003
William Arthur Bing III, 89, formerly of Amsterdam, passed away suddenly Tuesday evening at Med-Central Health Systems in Mansfield, Ohio with his family at his side.
Born in Albany, NY on July 20, 1914, a son of Dr. William A. Bing II, and Caroline Harwood Bing, he lived in Amsterdam for many years where his father practiced medicine.
William was a graduate of Northwestern University in Boston. He began his career as a pilot and worked for Mohawk Airlines until he retired. He served in the U.S. Army as a flight instructor and was known then as the "maestro".
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam. He lived in Whitesboro for twenty-three years and in Mansfield since July of this year to be closer to his daughter.
William was also a member of the Q-B Flying club.
In September 1, 1935, he was united in marriage to the former Betty Jane Shuttleworth.
In addition to his beloved wife of sixty-eight years, his family includes his daughters, Caroline B. Koehler of Mansfield, and Betty Jane (Mrs. Kenneth) Bosch of Wilmington, Delaware; eleven grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, William A Bing IV in 1989, and his brother, John Bing.
Funeral services are Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue. The Rev. David Koehler, Bill's grandson, will officiate.
Interment will take place in Fairview Cemetery.
Calling hours are Sunday from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Thomas J. Montagnino
December 4, 2003
Mr. Thomas J. Montagnino, 81, of Vrooman Avenue, Amsterdam, passed away Thursday morning at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born in Amsterdam on October 22, 1922, he was a son of Vincenzo "James" and Concetta Lombardo Montagnino.
Mr. Montagnino received his education in the Amsterdam school system and was a 1939 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He was employed by the United States Postal Service as Supervisor of Clerks at the Amsterdam Post Office until his retirement on April 16. 1980.
Mr. Montagnino was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Western Pacific and was the recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with the Bronze Arrowhead and the Purple Heart Award, for being wounded in action.
Mr. Montagnino was a parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Past President of the Letter Carriers Union for 20 years and Past President of the Columbian Social Club all of Amsterdam, NY.
Mr. Montagnino is survived by his wife, Joan "Ginger" Montagnino, to whom he was married on July 26, 1975; two daughters, Sharon Montagnino of the state of Wyoming and Karen Nass of Schenectady, NY; one stepdaughter, Sondra Stephens and her husband Brent of Schenectady, NY; and one stepson. Paul Pikul and his fiance, Patches Piasecki of Amsterdam, NY; two brothers, Joseph Montagnino and his wife Jeanette and Vincent Montagnino and his wife Lorraine all of Amsterdam, NY; two sisters, Sara Rouse and Sue LeCornu and her husband Charles, all of California; three step grandchildren, Anthony Kaczmarek, Paul Pikul and Christopher Piasecki; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral service will be at the convenience of the family.
There are no calling hours.
Interment with full military honors will be at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
Memorial gifts in Mr. Montagnino's name may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 7 Washington Square, Albany, NY 12205.
Arrangements are by the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Lorraine D. Williams
December 3, 2003
Lorraine D. Williams, age 56, of Gloversville, died Wednesday at the Albany Medical Center, Albany, NY. Born May 5, 1947 in Little Falls, NY, she was the daughter of Willis and Alice Oeser Geweye.
Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband, James G. Williams of Gloversville; her mother, Alice Geweye of Fort Plain, NY; her children, John J. Williams and his wife, Brandy of Gloversville, Jeanette R. Williams of Gloversville, James B. Rio Williams of Gloversville and Yvette C. Williams of Gloversville; her step children, Lynn A. Williams, James G. Williams and Annette F. Williams, all of Gloversville; her brother, John Geweye and his wife, Paula of Fort Plain; her sister, Karen Hinkle and her husband, John of Walton, NY; six grandchildren, one great grandchild; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by her father, Willis Geweye and her sister, Yvonne Kane.
There will be no services or calling hours.
Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions can be made to the National Children's Cancer Society or the Mountain Valley Hospice.
Arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Avenue, Gloversville, NY.

Edith Corcoran
December 3, 2003
Edith Corcoran, a former resident of Amsterdam, passed away December 3, 2003 at her home in Great Neck, NY after a brief illness. She was 109 years of age.
Mrs. Corcoran, known as Peg to her friends, was born in Amsterdam on May 17, 1894 to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Brennen. She attended Amsterdam schools and graduated from the Amsterdam City Hospital Nursing Training School, Class of 1916. Nursing played an important role in her life, and she was proud member and past president of the school's alumni association.
In 1917 she married James Corcoran also of Amsterdam and they resided here until moving to Great Neck in 1981 to be near their daughter Lenore. Mr. Corcoran passed away a short time later.
Until a couple of years ago, Mrs. Corcoran was able to care for herself in her own home. This past May, the New York Times published an article on her being the eldest resident of Nassau, and her one hundred years of playing the piano. She entertained the reporter with several Irving Berlin songs. She was the eldest member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church. She had a special place in her heart for St. Ann's.
Admired for her quick wit and sense of humor, she was an avid baseball fan, she rooted for both the Yankees and the Mets.
Mrs. Corcoran is survived by her daughter, Lenore; granddaughters, Lisaanne Altmann and Nancy Guzzetta and great grandchildren, Anika and Jeremey Altmann.
Her son James Corcoran Jr. predeceased her in 1989.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue. The Office for the Burial of the Dead will be read on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Christopher A. Smith officiating.
Spring interment will take place in Green Hill Cemetery.

George A. Taylor Jr.
December 8, 2003
Mr. George A. Taylor Jr., 56 of Warner Robins,GA, died Monday morning at the St. Clares Hospital in Schenectady, after being transferred from the home of his sister Carolyn of Schenectady who was caring for him with hospice during his illness.
Born February 14, 1947, in Amsterdam, NY he was the son of George A. and Earline Simmons Taylor Sr.
He was a graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School and served twenty five years in the U.S. Air force as a Master Sergeant. George was a Viet Nam Veteran and received the Republic of Viet Nam Gallantry Cross.
Mr. Taylor was employed in 1992 as a dispatcher by the Warner Robins Police Department in Warner Robins, GA, until retiring in October of this year due to ill health.
Survivor include a son, Brandon Taylor of Texas; a daughter Yolanda Lee Taylor of Kent, WA; his mother, Earline Simmons Taylor of Amsterdam; four brothers, Edward A. Taylor of Dayton, OH, Mansoor Homeed of Albany, NY, Michael Taylor of Columbus, OH and Glenn R. Taylor of San Diego, CA; three sisters, Elaine Smith of Amsterdam, Carolyn Taylor Pinn of Schenectady and Mary Alice Taylor of Albany; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Mr. Taylor was predeceased by his father, George; two brothers, Henry Taylor who died in 1997 and Lawrence A. Taylor who died in 2003.
Funeral services will be private and will be held at the convenience of the family at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY with the Rev. Kenneth Q. James officiating. Burial of cremains will take place in Fairview Cemetery.
