Helen Bowmaker
November 2, 1996
Mrs. Helen DiPace Bowmaker, 81, of Sharon Springs, died Nov. 2 at the Palatine Bridge Nursing Home after a long illness.
Born July 31, 1915 in Sharon Springs, she was the daughter of Scott and Elsie Cross Madison.
A lifelong resident of Sharon Springs, Mrs. Bowmaker was a graduate of Sharon Springs High School, where she played on the girls basketball team.
She was employed as a teller at the Central National Bank, retiring in 1977.
Mrs. Bowmaker was a member of the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church and was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Reach for Recovery, the Firemen's Auxiliary, the United Methodist Women, the Silver and Gold Club, the Twentieth Century Club and the Bassett Hospital Auxiliary.
Her first husband, Anthony DiPace, died Dec. 26, 1944. She was married to George Bowmaker until his death in April of 1977.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Pfau of Jacksonville, Ill.; a son, Anthony L. DiPace of Sharon Springs; a sister, Grace Lynk of Sharon Springs; two brothers, Raymond Madison of Cherry Valley and Alton Madison of Duanesburg; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Nov 6 in Sharon Springs. Burial took place in Sharon Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Lappeus Funeral Home, 32 Park St., Sharon Springs.

Howard Smith
November 10, 1996
Howard A. Smith Jr., 46, of Route 67, Ephratah, died Sunday at his home.
Born Oct. 25, 1950 in Gloversville, he was the son of Howard N. Smith and Elizabeth Alkinburgh. He was educated at the Oppenheim-Ephratah schools.
Mr. Smith had worked at Keymark in Fonda for the last 19 years and at the time of his death he was a supervisor.
He lived in Ephratah for 17 years.
He was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army.
He married Marilyn Anderson on July 21, 1973.
In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include three sons, Howard A. Smith III and Jason R. Smith of Johnstown and Joshua A. Smith of Ephratah; three sisters, Alice Gallt and Bessie Getman of Lasselsville, and Naomi Abare of Stratford; two brothers, David R. Smith of Lasselsville and Harry J. Smith of Fort Plain, a grandson and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with Pastor Bob Kilmer officiating. Burial will be in Fical Cemetery, Lasselsville.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Petro Mazak
November 11, 1996
Petro Mazak, 85, of Austin Street, Amsterdam, died Monday at his home.
Born Nov. 12, 1910 in Zahwizdia, Ukraine, he was the son of Fedir and Donia Solyma Mazak. Educated in the Ukraine, Mr. Mazak came to the Amsterdam area in 1949.
He was a carpenter in the Ukraine. He worked for the former Bigelow Sanford Carpet Mills and later for the Laborers Local Union 190, Glenmont.
Mr. Mazak was a member of the Ukrainian Congress Committee, the Ukrainian Club of America and the Ukrainian National Association.
He was also a member of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
He married Maria Mazak on Nov. 21, 1939.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a sister, Stefania Kowalchuk of the Ukraine; nieces, nephews and cousins in the Ukraine.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Interment will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A Parastas Service will be conducted at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Children of Chernobyl in care of the funeral home.

Edna Solloway
November 11, 1996
Mrs. Edna Solloway, 92, formerly of Mountainview Road, Mayfield, died Monday at the Nathan Littauer Nursing Home.
Born in Broadalbin, Mrs. Solloway attended schools in Gloversville and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a self-employed musician for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Solloway owned and operated the former Magic Dog Kennel in Mayfield, where she raised and trained American Kennel Club-registered German shepherds.
She was a member of the Mayfield United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Solloway was a member of the Sacandaga Park Theatrical Society.
An accomplished equestrian, she was a member of the New York State Saddlehorse Association and the Elmwood Riding Club.
Her husband, Howard Solloway, died in 1973.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Ann Solloway of Gloversville; two brothers, Robert Brundige of Massachusetts and Eugene Brundige of Gloversville, and a sister, Marg Sino of Florida.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave. Burial will be in Mayfield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home.

Richard Van Buren
November 6, 1996
Funeral services were conducted Monday for Richard A. Van Buren, 35, of Philadelphia, formerly of Carlisle, who died Wednesday from from injuries sustained in an auto accident.
Born in Cobleskill, Mr. Van Buren was a 1980 graduate of Cobleskill High School.
He was a labor foreman at J.G. Nascon Construction in Eddysburg, Pa. at the time of his death.
He married Marie Gross Van Buren on Nov. 10, 1990.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Richard Michael Van Buren of Philadelphia; a daughter, Alexa Marie Van Buren of Philadelphia; his parents, Robert and Alice Fan Buren of Carlisle, and a brother, Robert F. Van Buren of Cobleskill.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Van Buren Children's Trust Fund, Prime Bank, 1000 Cottman Ave., Philadelphia 19111.
Arrangements are by the Wackerman Funeral Home.

Grace Mead
November 12, 1996
Grace Figner Mead, 67, of Midline Road, died Tuesday evening at home after a long illness.
Born Oct. 7, 1929 in New York City, she was the daughter of James A. and Martha C. Smith Figner Sr. She came to the Middleburg area as a young lady and came to the Amsterdam area and attended Amsterdam schools as a child.
She received a degree in nursing from Fulton-Montgomery Community College and was a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was employed as a supervisor for Fownes Bros. Gloves in Amsterdam for 11 1/2 years, retiring in 1992 due to illness.
Mrs. Mead was of the protestant faith.
She was a member of the AARP.
She married Robert E. Mead on June 8, 1985.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, David W. Andrews of Amsterdam; a daughter, Lesley W. Andrews of Amsterdam; a brother, James A. Figner Jr. of Toms River, N.J.; a sister, Barbara Snipes of Huntington, Conn.; several nieces nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Burial will be in Glen Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Robert Green
November 11, 1996
Robert C. Green Sr., 41, of Jay Street, Amsterdam, died Monday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after being stricken.
Born March 20, 1955, he was the son of Frederick and Elmir Covey Green Sr. He was a lifelong area resident and was educated in local schools.
Mr. Green worked in construction for various companies.
He was a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Chuctanunda Fish and Game Club.
He was married to Elvana Green of Cobleskill.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Robert C. Green Jr. of Amsterdam and Jason R. Green of Cobleskill; three brothers, Frederick Green Jr. of Corinth, Roger A. Green and Randy H. Green Sr., both of Amsterdam; one sister, Beverly M. Green of Amsterdam, one granddaughter, Kristen Green of Amsterdam, and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place with the Rev. Robert E. Doxey officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Carmeta Nelson
November 12, 1996
Carmeta L. Nelson, 95, of the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, Amsterdam, died Tuesday after a short illness.
Born Feb. 15, 1901 in Stone Arabia, she was the daughter of Jeremiah Lasher and Cora Gray.
At one time, Mrs. Nelson had worked as an inspector at Remington Arms in Ilion.
She lived in Ilion most of her life and had lived in Fort Plain before moving to Amsterdam to reside and later moved to the facility in 1994.
Mrs. Nelson was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Ilion and the former Stone Arabia Reformed Church.
She was a member of the Eastern Star in Ilion and a member of the Amaranth in Ilion.
She married Kenneth S. Nelson on Oct. 26, 1921. He died Jan. 12, 1992.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia N. Barger of Charlton; three grandchildren, Jerry Barger of Deer Park, Wash.; Jon Barger of Burnt Hills and James Barger of Fraser, Colo.; three great-grandchildren, Courtney Barger, Kenneth Barger and Jeremy Barger all of Fort Plain. She was predeceased by a grandson, Jeffrey N. Barger, on July 24, 1996.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Jeff Thibodeau officiating. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Ann Mahoney
November 9, 1996
Mrs. Ann Mahoney, 66, of Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of Gloversville, died Saturday at Boca Raton Community Hospital as the result of injuries sustained in an auto accident that day.
Born in Syracuse, Mrs. Mahoney lived in Florida for the past eight years and resided most of her life in Gloversville.
She and her husband operated the Elms Restaurant in Meco.
Mrs. Mahoney was a former member of Sacred Heart Church.
Her husband, John F. Mahoney Jr., died in 1983.
Survivors include five sons, John F. Mahoney III of Memphis, Tenn., Patrick N. Mahoney of Saratoga Springs, Paul J. Mahoney of Delray Beach, and Stephen J. and David P. Mahoney both of Gloversville; three daughters, Elizabeth A. Flaherty of Great Falls, Va., Monica A. Mahoney of Richmond, Va., and Bridget Thommen of Delray Beach; a brother, John Van Arnam of Syracuse; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Ave., and at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will be in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Norman Crowley
November 11, 1996
Norman G. Crowley, 62, of Malta Meadows, died Monday at home after being stricken.
Born in Mechanicville, Mr. Crowley lived most of his life in Round Lake and Ballston Spa.
He served with the Navy during the Korean War.
Mr. Crowley worked out of Local 105 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union in Schenectady for 27 years, retiring in 1985.
He was the widower of Janet Abeale Crowley.
Survivors include three sons, Norman G. Crowley Jr. of Cherry Valley, and Wade J. and Wayne "Mike" Crowley, both of Round Lake; a daughter, Suzanne Dorrough of Ballston Lake; a brother, Glenn Crowley of Fort Plain; four sisters, Chiquita Ann Smith of Fonda, Constance Krogh of Wynantskill, Romona Goldfoot of Ballston Lake, and Patricia Hatley of Manchester, N.H.; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. today at the Dunning Street Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, Clifton Park.
