Michael P. Mezzio of the Town of Newburgh, died Dec. 16 at St. Luke's Hospital.
Born Oct. 27, 1943, he was the son of Michael P. Mezzio Sr. and Leona Reynolds.
Mr. Mezzio was employed as a civil engineer for IBM, Poughkeepsie and Axiom of Poughkeepsie.
He was married to the former Audrey Clark.
He was coach for the Town of Newburgh Little League and former coach for Sacred Heart CYO Basketball and a member of Orange County Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his mother, Leona Mezzio Fox of Prescott, Ariz.; his wife, Audrey Mezzio at home; one son, Michael P. Mezzio III of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Dana Marie Johnson of Highland Mills; two brothers, Martin Mezzio of Chandler, Ariz.; and Stephen Mezzio of Tempe, Ariz.; four sisters, Elaine Mezzio of Oakland, Calif.; Mary Alice Montenaro of Spencerport.; Christine Mezzio of Scotia; and Ann Marie Palmer of Watertown; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's Church in Newburgh on Dec. 19, with Monsignor John Budwick officiating.
Burial took place in Woodlawn Cemetery in New Windsor.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Coloni Funeral Home, Route 9W, New Windsor.
Joseph Renyak
January 19, 1997
Joseph F. Renyak, 86, of Albea Drive, Hagaman, died Sunday at his home.
Mr. Renyak was born July 4, 1910 in Schenectady, the son of Andrew and Rose Wayto Renyak. He was a graduate of the former Draper High School. He then accepted a position as a welder with the General Electric Company in their apprenticeship program. In 1931 he founded Hi-Grade Welding & Fabricating Inc. in Amsterdam, which he operated until his retirement in 1982.
Mr. Renyak was a member of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church; a member of Welcome Lodge No. 829 F. & A.M.; past president of the Amsterdam Shrine Club; Amsterdam Rotary Club; and an avid flyer, belonging to several aviation clubs.
Mr. Renyak was also a past member of the Board of Directors of Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, former Perth Central School Board of Education, Home for Elderly Women Board of Directors, Montgomery County S.P.C.A. , and Fairview Cemetery Board of Directors.
He married the former Maxine Marsh on Oct. 3, 1936.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Robert Wayne Renyak of Perth; his daughter, Nadine R. Stark of Mayfield; his sister, Lena Looman of Storrs, Conn., four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Johnson-Lindsay Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Robert E. Doxey officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Alma Smiler
January 18, 1997
Mrs. Alma Rose Smiler, 75, of Guilderland, died Saturday at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.
Mrs. Smiler was born and raised in Albany and lived most of her live in Gloversville.
She worked as a customer relations representative for GTE in Gloversville for 25 years, retiring in the late 1980s.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Ellis of Johnstown and Pamela Smiler of Guilderland; a sister, Miriam Adelman of Gloversville; and four grandchildren.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Ginsburg Memorial Chapel, 116 Everett Road, Albany. Burial will follow in Beth Abraham Jacob Cemetery, Fuller Road.
A period of mourning will be observed at the home of Pam Smiler and Sol Goldstein, 18 Arlene Ave., Guilderland, through Saturday evening.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 50 Colvin Ave., Albany, 12206.
Hazel Scott
January 19, 1997
Mrs. Hazel M. Scott, 94, of McEwan Road, Canajoharie, died Sunday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Marshville on June 30, 1902, she was the daughter of George H. Dygert and Jennie Graves. She graduated from Canajoharie schools in 1920 and graduated from the Oneonta Normal School.
She taught school at the former Sprout Brook and Marshville Country School.
Mrs. Scott was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of Marshville Evangelical Church.
She was employed as a clerk for the Marshville Evangelical Church for 39 years and was a former member of the Buel Grange.
She married Carl M. Scott on Aug. 1, 1925 in Canajoharie. He died Sept. 9, 1978.
Survivors include one sister, Ruth Lynk of Sharon Springs; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Ruth Null in 1981 and Carolyn Scott in 1947.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
The Rev. Camillus Mourice will officiate.
Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours are Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Marshville Evangelical Church or the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service.
Felix McOwen
January 20, 1997
Felix F. McOwen, 56, of West Main Street, Broadalbin, died Monday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Utica on Jan. 14, 1941, he was the son of Edward and Alice Jordan McOwen. He was educated in Utica and had lived in the Utica area until moving to Broadalbin 12 years ago.
Mr. McOwen was a forklift operator for Coleco Industries, formerly in Mayfield. He later worked at N.A. Taylor in Gloversville.
Mr. McOwen was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 337 in Broadalbin.
Survivors include his wife, the former Carol A. Mamrosh whom he married on July 8, 1972; a son, Michael D. McOwen, serving in the U.S. Navy in Norfolk Va.; a daughter, Michelle A. McOwen of Lima, N.Y.; a brother, Edward McOwen of Utica; a sister, Frances Melbach of Marcy; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc. 38 West Main St., Broadalbin with the Rev. Daniel Parisi.
Cremation will take place at the Parkview Crematory, Schenectady. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Josephine Amadon
January 19, 1997
Mrs. Josephine A. Amadon, 99, of the Getman Home, Gloversville, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Mayfield, Mrs. Amadon was a graduate of Northville High School and attended St. Faith's Academy in Saratoga.
She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she served as a deacon and was a member of the Women's Fortnightly Society.
She served as a 5th Ward Republican committeewoman and in the same capacity on the National Republican Committee. She was a charter member of, and for more than 20 years, served on the board of directors for the Mental Health Association and the Mental Health Day Center. She was a member of the Fulton County Historical Society and a charter member of Mountain Lake Chapter 2700, Order of the Eastern Star for more than 66 years.
Her husband, Clarence H. Amadon, whom she married July 30, 1917, died in 1966.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jean A. Taylor of Gloversville; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Spring burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Ehle Funeral Home, 15 N. William St., Johnstown.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Getman Home; Mountain Valley Hospice, or the Central Association for the Blind, 507 Kent St., Utica, 13599.
Mary Baldwin
January 20, 1997
Mrs. Mary Helen Baldwin, 88, of Mayfield, died Monday at the Extended Care Facility of Nathan Littauer Hospital after a long illness.
Mrs. Baldwin was born in Bleecker. She was a glovemaker for the former Louis Meyer Glove Company and later for the former Cresendoe Glove Company retiring in 1970.
Mrs. Baldwin was a member of the Amalgamated Gloveworkers Union.
Survivors include her husband, Richard G. Baldwin, whom she married March 19, 1948; two sons, Charles Gifford of Bleecker and Edwin Gifford of Kingsman, Ariz.; a daughter, Beverly Birch of Gloversville; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St.
Spring burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity or church of one's choice.
Olive Conrad
January 20, 1997
Olive Conrad, 87, formerly of Division Street, Amsterdam, died Monday morning at Montgomery Meadows.
Born in the Town of Danube, Herkimer County, on Oct. 6, 1909, she was the daughter of John and Iva Suits Goodbread.
Mrs. Conrad was educated in the Herkimer School System.
She was employed by the Barlow Manufacturing Company until her retirement in 1964.
Mrs. Conrad was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of its Rosary Society.
Her husband, George A. Conrad whom she married in 1940, died in 1983.
Mrs. Conrad is survived by two sons, John Conrad and David Conrad, both of Amsterdam; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, followed at 11:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church.
Calling hours will be held today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the mortuary.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Memorial contributions in Mrs. Conrad's memory may be made to St. Mary's Church Development Fund, 156 East Main St., Amsterdam.
Rebecca Curley
January 20, 1997
Miss Rebecca Elizabeth Curley, 13, of Goode Road, Ballston Spa, died Monday at Albany Medical Center Hospital after being stricken.
Born in Niskayuna, Miss Curley was a sixth-grader at the Maple Avenue Middle School in Saratoga Springs.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Renee and Matthew Whelan of Ballston Spa; her father and stepmother, Todd and Darlene Curley of East Galway; a brother, Jordan Curley of Ballston Spa; a stepsister, Donna Swart of East Galway; her paternal grandparents, Thomas and Jean Curley of Ballston Spa; her maternal grandmother, Marion Colpoys of Ballston Spa; her step-grandmother, Anita Whelan of Ballston Spa; and her step-grandfather, Michael Whelan of Las Vegas, Nev.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Milton Avenue.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Armer Funeral Home, 39 E. High St.
Burial will be in Ballston Spa Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Emergency Corps, Thompson Street.
Vincent Orapello
January 20, 1997
Vincent S. Orapello, 54, of State Route 67, Fort Johnson, died Sunday evening at St. Mary's Hospital, shortly after being admitted.
Born in Amsterdam on Aug. 5, 1942, he was the son of Michael F. and Antoinette Nicosia Orapello.
Mr. Orapello was educated in the Amsterdam School System and was a member of the first graduating class of Fulton-Montgomery Community College where he majored in education. He received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Oneonta State Teachers College.
He was employed by the Cap Snap Corp., Clifton Park, as quality assurance manager. He was active in various committees as a member of the Irish-American Club of Amsterdam.
He served with the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1963 as a radar operator, achieving the rank of Petty Officer.
Mr. Orapello was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
He married Madeline V. Christman on April 15, 1973.
Along with his wife, survivors include a daughter, Amy Orapello of Fort Johnson; his mother, Antoinette Orapello of Amsterdam; a brother, Michael Orapello Jr. of Amsterdam; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., followed at 9:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church.
Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Orapello's memory to the Fort Johnson Volunteer Fire Department or to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps in care of the Riley Mortuary Inc.
