Esther MacDougall
June 10, 1996
Esther MacDougall, 215 Clifford St., Blackfoot, Idaho, died June 10 following a long illness. She was born in Johnstown and resided in the Town of Perth for many years and also lived in Daytona Beach, Fla. for many years.
She moved to Blackfoot to be with her daughter 2 years ago from Daytona Beach.
Mrs. MacDougall was an aide at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital for many years.
Her husband, Joseph MacDougall, died several years ago.
Survivors include her daughter, Sherry Walker of Blackfoot, Idaho, 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several cousins.
A memorial service took place in Blackfoot.
Burial was in Cedar Hill Memorial Gardens in Daytona Beach, Fla. Local arrangements were made by Jeffords Chapel, Broadalbin.

Harriet Van Dyke
July 23, 1996
Harriet Parker Van Dyke, age 82, of Route 30, Amsterdam, died Tuesday at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady after a long illness.
She was born in Cody, Wy., and was the daughter of Gordon and Dora (Phillips) Parker and was a graduate of Draper High School, Rotterdam.
She spent most of her life in the Amsterdam area and was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband John G. Van Dyke, whom she married in 1955; two sons, Norman Attendorn of Heber Springs, Ark. and the late Gordon Attendorn; a daughter, Shirley Perazzo of Glenville; five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Light's Funeral Home, Inc., 1428 State St., Schenectady.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Park Cemetery in Scotia.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Clare's Hospital Building Fund Drive, 600 McClellan St., Schenectady,12304.

John Bartlett
July 23, 1996
John E. (Al) Bartlett, 75 of 28 Winncoasch St., Laconia, N.H. and a former St. Johnsville resident died Tuesday at the New Hampshire Veteran's Hospital in Manchester, N.H.
He was born Oct. 13, 1920, in the Town of Root, the son of John and Anna Bridget (Espenosa) Bartlett.
He was educated in the Town of Root schools and lived many years in the St. Johnsville area.
His marriage to Lucille P. VonderBorn took place on Oct. 11, 1948 in Fort Plain.
Mrs. Bartlett died on Nove. 30, 1985.
Mr. Bartlett was a World War II Air Force veteran. While serving his country, he flew 51 missions, and received the following awards; Air Medal, Silver & two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Unit Badge, European/African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Medal and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on June 27, 1945 with the rank of technical sergeant.
Until his retirement, he was a self-employed carpenter throughout the Mohawk Valley.
He was a member of Fort Plain American Legion Post #554, Fort Plain V.F.W. Post #3275 and other various clubs.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Bartlett, his wife Colleen of St. Johnsville and John Bartlett, his wife Vicki of Bremerton, Washington, two daughters, Cindy Farrant, her husband Mark of Laconia, N.H. and Betsy Johnston and her husband Dick of Monmouth, Ill., a brother; Joe Bartlett of Arietta, a sister; Teresa Fausch of Clawsong, Mich., several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was pre-deceased by a daughter; Mary Bartlett and a brother; Gus Bartlett.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.
Burial will be in St. Johnsville Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Members of the Fort Plain American Legion are asked to meet at the funeral home at 7:15 p.m. Friday for services.

George DiCaprio
July 24, 1996
George D. DiCaprio, 67, of Division Street, Amsterdam, died Wednesday evening at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born in Amsterdam on Nov. 16, 1928, the son of George & Beatrice Lingenfelter DiCaprio.
He was a lifelong resident and attended local schools and was a graduate of the Spencer Business Institute. He was employed at the former Dorn's Transportation Co. in Amsterdam and later as a supervisor for the Office of General Services for the State of New York in Scotia, retiring in 1987.
Mr. DiCaprio was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained during the war.
He was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski Post 701 American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans and was also a member of the Inman Seniors. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
He married the former Margaret Zumbolo on Sept. 24, 1955.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Mark G. DiCaprio of Queensbury, two daughters, Elizabeth Headley of Winchester, Va. and Jill Sweeney of Mayfield, five sisters, Jean LaBate, Elaine Furman, Patricia Mannino and Barbara Quinn, all of Amsterdam, and Shirley Gardner of Rome, five grandchildren, one aunt, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Amsterdam or to Mount Loretto Chapel Fund in care of the Rossi Funeral Home.

Sadie Gadomski
July 25, 1996
Mrs. Sadie S. Gadomski, 71, of 17 Milton Avenue, Amsterdam, died this morning at St. Mary's Hospital.
She was born May 6, 1925, in Amsterdam, and was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ferry Szumski. She attended local schools and was a lifelong resident.
She was employed for many years by the M. Lurie Co. Later, she worked at the New York State Department of Labor in Albany before retiring in 1984.
She was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist, its Rosary Society and the Pierogi Ladies. She was also a member of St. John's Seniors.
She was married to John J. Gadomski on Sept. 15, 1946. He died March 10, 1985.
She is survived by a daughter, Paula Hubbard, Ballston Lake; one son, Thomas Gadomski of Schenectady, three grandchildren, Jill, Lisa and Jason Hubbard, all of Ballston Lake; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. John the Baptist.
Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of St. John the Baptist, 40 VanDerveer St., Amsterdam.

Howard Valentine
July 24, 1996
Howard E. Valentine, 73, of River Street, Fort Plain, died Wednesday evening at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown after a brief illness.
Born Dec. 9, 1922 in Paragould, Ark., he was the son of Sam & Sylvia Johnson Valentine. He was educated in Arkansas.
Mr. Valentine was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving during World War II and the Korean War and was stationed at several locations across the United States during his military career of 21 years and later was a machinist for Contrail Railroad in Selkirk for 15 years, retiring in 1983.
He lived in Fort Plain since 1988 and also lived in Rural Grove and Troy.
He was a member of the Grandview Baptist Church in Fort Plain, a member of the Mohawk Valley VFW Post 3275 of Fort Plain and a member of the Smith Schultz Post No. 222 American Legion of Canajoharie.
He married Annie (Flo) Benton Valentine on Jan. 9, 1955. in Lafe, Ark.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Terry L. Valentine of Littleton, Colo.; four daughters, Linda S. Brooks of Marmaduke, Ark., Veanessa N. Burbage of Littleton, Colo., Patricia K. Curcio of Fort Plain and Melissa A. Rexius of Littleton, Colo.; a sister, Emaline Johnston of Hammond, Ind.; 15 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Carl Hawver officiating. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grandview Baptist Church, 15 Washington St., Fort Plain.

Jeffrey Barger
July 24, 1996
Jeffrey Nelson Barger, 41, of Route 80, died Wednesday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a long illness.
Born Dec. 9, 1954 in Schenectady, he was the son of Clifford and Virginia (Nelson) Barger. He was a 1972 graduate of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School, and attended Fulton-Montgomery Community College for two years. Mr. Barger lived in Fort Plain for the past 13 years.
He was a production analyst for Key Services in Corporate Woods in Albany for the past four years.
Mr. Barger was a member of the Fort Plain Reformed Church.
He was a member of the American Motorcycle Association.
He married Lynn Sherwood Barger on April 17, 1982.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Kenneth S. and Jeremy C. Barger, both of Fort Plain; a daughter, Courtney L. Barger of Fort Plain; his parents, Clifford and Virginia Barger of Charlton; three brothers, Jerry L. Barger of Medical Lake, Wash., James S. Barger of Frasier, Colo., and Jon B. Barger of Burnt Hills; his maternal grandmother, Carmita Nelson of Amsterdam; and his paternal grandmother, Alice Barger of Mohawk.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Plain Reformed Church, Canal Street. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 tonight at the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Procurement Organization, Albany Medical College, 47 New Scotland Ave., Albany 12208.

Audrey Hazzard
July 25, 1996
Audrey Hibbard Hazzard, 67, of Brookman's Corners Road, Fort Plain, died Thursday evening at home after a long illness.
Born March 10, 1929 in Cherry Valley, she was the daughter of James and Margaret Hibbard.
She was educated in Fultonville schools and was of the Protestant faith.
She was a dairy farmer on the family farm and was a cafeteria worker years ago for the Fort Plain High School.
She married Virgil E. Hazzard Sr. on Dec. 4, 1948. He died earlier this month.
Survivors include two sons, Virgil E. Hazzard Jr. of Fly Creek and James G. Hazzard of Fultonville, two stepdaughters, Patricia A. Oare and Carolyn J. Oare of Johnstown, a brother, Clarence Hibbard of Ephratah, a sister, Alice Conyne of Gloversville; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, with the Rev. Kenneth E. Dingman officiating. Burial will be Maple Avenue Cemetery in Fultonville.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice.

Lillian Savel
July 26, 1996
Mrs. Lillian Lyon Savel, 23 of Eglin Air Force Base, died at home Friday after a short illness.
Mrs. Savel was born in Gloversville, graduated from Gloversville High School and Fulton Montgomery Community College and attended Florida University.
She moved to the Pensacola, Fla., area in 1993. Later, Mrs. Savel was a resident of Fort Walton Beach before moving to the base last year.
She was a student teacher at the Preparation Station day care center in Fort Walton Beach.
Mrs. Savel attended the First Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach.
Survivors include her husband, Steven Savel, whom she married Sept. 23, 1995; her parents, Norman and Rachel Van Schaffel Lyon of Gloversville; a half-brother, Lewis Buseck of Gloversville; a sister, Teresa Lyon of Gloversville; and a half-sister, Martha Vienna of Gloversville.
A graveside service will be held at a time to be announced in Kings Cemetery, Northampton. There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, Gloversville.

Arthur Smith
July 26, 1996
Arthur W. Smith Jr. 74, of 14th Circle, S.E., Largo, Fla., an Amsterdam resident until recently, died Friday at the Morton Plan Rehabilitation Center in Clearwater, Fla.
Born in Amsterdam on Feb. 19, 1922, he was the son of Arthur W. and Laura M. Knack Smith. Mr. Smith lived here all his live until moving to Florida in April.
He was employed as a driver for Boss-Linco before retiring in 1960.
Mr. Smith was a painter at the Elwood Museum's painting classes, a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church and a member of its Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine DaBiere, whom he married Aug. 2, 1941; a son, Ronald D. Smith of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Jennifer Jones of Warner Robins, Ga.,; a sister, Margaret Peterson of Rockville, Conn.; a brother, Vincent O. Smith of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Speculator; and five grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 at St. Michael of Archangel Church. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to the church.
