Ward D. Hazard, 65, of Littauer Place, Gloversville, died late Thursday evening at Nathan Littauer Hospital.
Born in Charleston, Sept. 8, 1931, he was the son of Garfield and Margaret Vosburgh Hazard. He was educated in Fultonville Schools.
Mr. Hazard was employed as a window framer for Kas-Keller for 11 years and also was employed by Glen-Mohawk Dairy for more than 18 years. He also worked for Fiber Conversion Company in Broadalbin, retiring due to a disability.
Mr. Hazard was of the Methodist Faith.
He was former president of the Fultonville Drum Corps, former cub master of Fultonville, a former member of the Fultonville Volunteer Fire Department for more than 13 years, where is a honorary life-time member. He also was a member of the Church Bowling League in Gloversville for many years. He served with the U.S. Army Reserves from 1954 to 1957.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Hojohn Hazard, whom he married Sept 17, 1952; one son, Richard W. Hazard of Gloversville; one daughter, Gail Downer of Windsor, Conn.; two brothers, Everett Hazard of Canajoharie, and Garfield Hazard of Fonda; four sisters, Nettie Guyette and Marguerite Lohmeyer, both of Amsterdam, Regina Peeler of Fonda and Ella Mae Colby of Fultonville; two granddaughters; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Jackson-Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Spring burial will take place in Maple Avenue Cemetery in Fultonville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Alvin Gray
January 30, 1997
Mr. Alvin Gray, 73, of Lipe Place, Canajoharie, died Thursday evening at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after being stricken.
He was born Dec. 1, 1923 in St. Johnsville, the son of Aaron and Maggie Cretser Gray. He had resided in Canajoharie for the past 48 years.
Mr. Gray was employed as a machine operator for 40 years by Remington Arms in Ilion until retiring in 1982.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Mr. Gray was married May 1, 1948 to Hazel Holley, who survives.
Other survivors include a son, Ronald Gray of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Sandra Pinkevicz of Fulton; a brother, Reuben Gray of Ilion; two granddaughters, Brittany and Michelle Pinkevicz, both of Fulton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
Services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Adeline Bowley officiating.
Interment will be in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Corps. care of the funeral home.
Katherine Popielarz
February 1, 1997
Mrs. Katherine Anna Popielarz, 95, of the Glendale Home Nursing Facility, formerly of Green Corners Road, Glenville, died Saturday morning.
She was born Nov. 20, 1901 in Amsterdam, a daughter of the late Paul and Mary Szczepanik Dybas. She was educated locally and resided in the area most of her life. Mrs. Popielarz was a homemaker. She also owned and operated a family dairy farm with her husband before retiring.
She was a member of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Hagaman. She also was a member and lector of the Glenville Grange for many years.
Mrs. Popielarz was married to Michael P. Popielarz, who died in 1981.
Survivors include three daughters, Florence Calamaras of Seaford, Long Island, and Alice Poploski and Wanda Palumbo, both of Amsterdam; two sisters, Agnes Bielecki and Ceil Stacy, both of Amsterdam; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam.
Services will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed at 11:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stephen's Church, Hagaman.
Spring burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Hagaman.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Church.
John Marie
January 31, 1997
John "Knobby" Marie, 81, of Route 30 in the Town of Mayfield, died at his home Friday.
He was born Feb. 8, 1915 in Pierce, W.Va., a son of Guiseppe and Maria Galvati Marie. He moved to the Amsterdam area as a child, where he has since resided.
Mr. Marie was employed by the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mills for 25 years. He then went to work for the Watervliet Arsenal as a machinist for 30 years, retiring in 1985.
He was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
On April 22, 1951, he married Mary Marie, who survives. Other survivors include a brother, Louis Marie of Scotia; a sister, Rose Romeyn of California; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam. Services will be conducted 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home followed at 9:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.
Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice or the Fulton County SPCA care of Karen Blinsinger.
Nellie Staber
February 1, 1997
Mrs. Nellie Staber, 93, formerly of East Main Street, Amsterdam, died Saturday at Montgomery Meadows.
She was born Sept. 26, 1903 in Brooklyn, the daughter of Anthony and Mary Nagiones Stokna.
Mrs. Staber had attended St. Mary's Institute.
She was first employed by Breier of Amsterdam until 1965. She was then employed as a seamstress by Mohawk Sportswear until her retirement.
Mrs. Staber was a member of St. Casimir's Parish and its living rosary, St. Casimir's Ladies Auxiliary and St. Casimir's Seniors.
Her husband, Stanley Staber Sr., died Nov. 4, 1957.
Survivors include a son, Donald P. Staber of Galway; a brother, Richard Stokna of Galway; a sister, Genevieve Murry of Little Egg Harbor, N.J.; two grandchildren, Michael Staber of Galway and Diane Staber of Amsterdam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Staber was predeceased by her son, Stanley A. "Rocky" Staber, who died Feb. 26, 1992.
There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be conducted 9 a.m. Monday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Joseph Grabys officiating. Interment will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Casimir's Cemetery Fund.
Edward Kniep
February 1, 1997
Mr. Edward A. Kniep, 89, of Canal Street, Fort Plain, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.
He was born May 5, 1907 in the Bronx, the son of Henry and Julia Reinhardt Kniep. He was educated in the Bronx.
Mr. Kniep was employed at the Terminal Bag & Burlap Co. in the Bronx as a truck driver, and later at Holland Trucking Co. in Manhattan as a truck driver for many years before retiring.
He lived in Fort Plain since 1975. Mr. Kniep was a veteran of World War II serving with the Signal Corp of the U.S. Army, 88th Division.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He also was a member of VFW Post 3275 of Fort Plain.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Friest Kniep, whom he married March 29, 1941 in the Bronx; a son, Kenneth E. Kniep of Fort Plain; two granddaughters, Miranda Kniep and Lacey Kniep, both of Fort Plain; a grandson, Preston Kniep of Fort Plain; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours and services will be private. There will be a graveside service with military honors in the spring at Fort Plain Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Swain officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Center, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
Arrangements are by Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Fort Plain.
Alice Sulem
February 1, 1997
Mrs. Alice Knack Sulem, 81, of Romeyn Avenue, died Saturday morning at the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
She was born March 19, 1915 in Amsterdam, the daughter of Charles and Ethel Knack. She was a lifelong area resident.
With her husband, Louis Sulem, she owned and operated Sulem's Market on East Main Street in Amsterdam for 30 years until 1963. She later was employed as a sewing machine operator by Chalmer's Knitting Mill, Montco Manufacturing, and the Willow Glen Company, retiring in 1980.
Mrs. Sulem was a communicant of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Amsterdam. She married Louis Sulem Sept. 16, 1934.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Louis E. Sulem of Guilderland and Edward R. Sulem of Gloversville; two daughters, Alice L. Sulem and Ann Champain, both of Amsterdam; two brothers, Randolph Knack of Amsterdam and Ernest Knack of Akron, Ohio; a sister, Louise Milunski of Amsterdam; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Betz Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Services will be conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the Office for the Burial of the Dead will be read by the Rev. Christopher Smith, rector of St. Ann's Episcopal Church.
The interment will be in Hagaman Cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps., care of the funeral home.
Marjorie Jordan
January 29, 1997
Mrs. Marjorie Ellen Jordan, 93, of Pine, Ariz., formerly of Starkville, died Wednesday at Payson Care Center, Payson, Ariz. after a short illness.
Born June 13, 1903 in Sprakers, she was the daughter of John and Estella Neahr Hall. She was educated in Schenectady and Montgomery county schools.
Mrs. Jordan was a homemaker.
She had lived in Arizona for the past six years.
Mrs. Jordan was a members of St. James Lutheran Church in Starkville. She also was a member of St. James Guild.
Her husband, Harvey A. Jordan, whom she married Nov. 7, 1931 in Amsterdam, died Feb. 9, 1981.
Survivors include a son, Albert H. Jordan of Gloversville; a daughter, Edith C. Miller, of Pine, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.
Spring burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, care of St. Paul's, 36 Lydius St., Fort Plain, 13339, or to the charity of choice.
Richard Kling
February 1, 1997
Richard A. Kling, 74, of Arnold Avenue, Amsterdam, died Saturday at Albany Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.
Born March 3, 1922 in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of Anthony and Helen Miegel Kling.
He attended Snyder High School and graduated from St. Peter's College, both in Jersey City.
He was employed by Poly-Mag in Sag Harbor, Ill., and most recently by Coleco Industries as a department manager, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Kling was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as an artillery instructor.
He was a member of the Strike and Spare Bowling League and the American Legion Post No. 39 in Amsterdam.
Mr. Kling was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
He married Audrey Nickerson Kling on May 8, 1943.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Audrey Cornish of Jamesburgh, N.J., Elizabeth Bosler of Setauket, Anna Burtt and Patricia Loucks, both of Amsterdam; six grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., followed at 9:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Evelyn Meyer
February 1, 1997
Mrs. Evelyn J. Meyer, 72, of Tupelo Drive, Clifton Park, formerly of Greenwich, died Saturday at home after a long illness.
Mrs. Meyer was a 1943 graduate of Gloversville High School and a graduate of Albany Business College. She received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Albany State University.
Mrs. Meyer was employed by the New York State Division of Parole at Great Meadows State Prison in Comstock, retiring in 1980.
She was a member of the Halfmoon Senior Citizens.
Survivors include her husband, William Meyer; a son, John McFarland of Albany; a daughter, Darlene Peaslee of Saratoga Springs; a brother, Clayton Longfritz of Gloversville; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at a late date. There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga, 12866.
