Jason G. Compagnino, 20, of Hagadorn Mills Road, Broadalbin, died Tuesday in an auto accident on Sand Hill Road in Mayfield.
Born in Schenectady, Mr. Compagnino was a 1995 graduate of Galway Central School. He was voted most valuable player of the Galway Eagles baseball team in 1994. He was on the All Star team in 1993 and 1994.
He was a carpenter with Clute Construction in Charlton at the time of his death.
Survivors include his parents, Mario J. and Sharon M. Zych Compagnino of Broadalbin; three brothers, Nicholas Compagnino of Schenectady; Mario J. Compagnino Jr. of Broadalbin and Anthony Compagnino of Ballston Spa; a sister, Gina Compagnino of Galway; and his maternal grandmother, Mabel Zych of Rexford.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Sacandaga Road, Galway. Burial will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to charity.
Hope Willett
March 25, 1997
Mrs. Hope E. Willett, 91, of Gloversville, formerly of Caroga Lake, died Tuesday at the Fulton County Infirmary.
Born and educated in Wheelerville, Mrs. Willett was a homemaker and a member of the North Bush United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Nick Stoner Senior Citizens and Caroga Lake Historical Society.
Her husband, Delbert Willett, whom she married Aug. 22, 1927, died in 1964.
Survivors include four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown. Spring burial will take place in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to charity.
Salvatore Petrillo
March 27, 1997
Salvatore Petrillo, 90, formerly of Route 67, Amsterdam, died early this morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.
Born March 19, 1907, in Amsterdam, he was the son of Dominick and Carmella Napoleon Petrillo. He was a lifelong resident.
Mr. Petrillo was employed for 35 years as a loom fixer for Bigelow Sanford Carpet Mills, Amsterdam, and later as a supervisor at the Consolidated Novelty Co., also in Amsterdam for 19 years, retiring in 1974.
During World War II, Mr. Petrillo served in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees, stationed in Trinidad.
He was a communicant of St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church of Amsterdam.
Mr. Petrillo married to the former Iva Engle Oct. 12, 1935. She died Nov. 28, 1987.
Survivors include two btothers, Andrew Petrillo of Mahwah, N.J., and Alec Petrillo of Amsterdam; two sisters, Rose LaValle of New York City, and Linda Greenwall of Franklkin, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Lawrence Decker officiating. Interment will take place in Fairview Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Ina Bond
March 26, 1997
Mrs. Ina Wainright Bond, 78, of Yates Village, Schenectady, died Wednesday at home.
Born in Fultonham, Mrs. Bond was a resident of Schenectady for 50 years.
She was a matron at the Heritage Home for Women for 23 years, retiring in 1995.
She married Willard B. Bond on May 3, 1975.
In addition to her husband, survivors include five sons, Walter S. and Donald G. Van Buren, and Clifford A. Bond, all of Schenectady, William W. VanBuren of Mariaville Lake and Bradford R. Van Buren of Ballston Lake; three stepsons, Willard B. Bond Jr. of Schenectady, and Raymond B. and Robert B. Bond, both of Ballston Lake; three daughters, Ida Kilburn of Perth and Linda Peek and Kathryn Van Buren, both of Schenectady; a stepdaughter, Marion Kearney of Bombay; 39 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Schenectady Memorial Park Cemetery, Giffords Church Road, Rotterdam.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Light's Funeral Home, 1428 State St., Schenectady.
Laura Humpel
March 26, 1997
Laura H. Humpel, 85, of Pattersonville, died Wednesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Feb. 9, 1912 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Arnold and Lena Herzog Beer. She was educated in Amsterdam schools and was a life-long area resident.
Mrs. Humpel was a former member of the United Methodist Church on Golf Course Road.
She was a homemaker and was married to Karl F. Humpel in June of 1945. He died April 3, 1995.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Betty Sutkas of Pattersonville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be private and there will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the Chuctanunda Cemetery, Minaville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mariaville Volunteer Fire Department.
Arrangements are by the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam.
Ellsworth Simpson
March 25, 1997
Ellsworth Charles Simpson, 81, formerly of 401 Harrison Lane, Spartanburg, S.C., formerly of 401 Harrison Lane, died Tuesday in Magnolia Manor.
A native of Jasper, he was the son of the late Earl W. and Eva D. White Simpson. He retired from Polylok Corp., Tarboro, N.C. as vice president. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church of Spartanburg; and was also a member of the Walton Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Rosenfeld Simpson; a son, Joseph E. Simpson of Glens Falls, two daughters, Sally Stewart and Sonja Missita both of Spartanburg; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted Thursday at Bethel United Methodist Church by the Revs. Thurman W. Anderson Jr. and Daniel A. Morrison Jr.
A memorial service will also be held at a later date in Fultonville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 245 S. Church St., Spartanburg, S.C., 29306.
Arrangements are by the J.F. Floyd Mortuary, Spartanburg, S.C.
Andrew Malinchak
March 26, 1997
Andrew Malinchak, 77, of Little Falls, died Wednesday in Valley Health Services.
Born Feb. 7, 1920 in Short Creek, Ohio, he was the son of Nicholas and Anna Ramonda Malinchak. He came to this area as a child and attended Middleville schools.
He served with the U.S. army during World War II in the European Theatre as a paratrooper and attained the rank of corporal. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Normandy on June 6, 1944. He was captured by the German Army and was a prisoner of war in Germany from June 6, 1944, until his liberation on May 1, 1945.
He married Mary Nasypany on June 11, 1949 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Herkimer. He and his wife were owners and operators of Mally-Dale Farm in Little Falls for many years until their retirement in 1979. Mr. Malinchak was also the owner and operator of Malinchak Trucking and was a salesman for Madison Silos and was awarded top salesman in 1972.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church and a member of the Central New York area American EX-P.O.W. Inc., the staff sergeant at Steve Stefula VFW Post 4612 and the American Legion posts in both Schenectady and Albany. He was a former member of the Holstein Association, the Farm Bureau and the Extension Service.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a brother, John Malinchak of Florida; two sisters, Mary Kohn of Little Falls and Nancy Florian of Fort Plain; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by two sons, Michael and Nicholas Malinchak.
A funeral was conducted this morning at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer, and at St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church with the Rev. Nicholas Newmerzycky, pastor, officiating.
Calling hours were Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Little Falls Hospital or to St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Sharon McConchie
March 26, 1997
Mrs. Sharon L. Offenbecker McConchie, 51, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Galway and Ballston Spa, died Wednesday at home.
Born in Mechanicville, Mrs. McConchie worked for the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs, until moving to Florida.
While living in Florida, she worked at a restaurant.
Survivors include three daughters, Kelly Sanders of Galway, Tracey Pred of Atlanta, Ga., and Suzanna McConchie of Guilderland; and four grandchildren.
A service and burial will take place in Florida.
Local arrangements are by the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Galway.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley Health Care Center.
Pauline Jones
March 27, 1997
Mrs. Pauline L. Jones, 79, of Eastern Avenue, West Charlton, died Thursday at her daughter's home after a long illness.
Born in Oneida, Mrs. Jones lived in Hamilton until moving to West Charlton in 1996.
She was a secretary for the Madison County Department of Social Services.
Her husband, Arthur E. Jones, died in 1972.
Survivors include a daughter, Christie Schrader of West Charlton; a son, David Jones of Hubert, N.C., a sister, Tinker Conklin of Coco Beach, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Galway Volunteer Ambulance Corps; the West Charlton Volunteer Ambulance Corps; the West Charlton Volunteer Fire Department or Hospice of Schenectady.
Arrangements are by the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Galway.
Gertrude Winne
March 26, 1997
Mrs. Gertrude Mabel Winne, 87, of the Oakridge Adult Home, Esperance, formerly of Cherry Valley, died Wednesday at Bassett Hospital in Cobleskill.
Mrs. Winne was born in Pittsfield, Mass.
She was a communicant of the First Presbyterian Church in Cherry Valley for more than 50 years.
She married F. LeVere Winne on Aug. 2, 1934. He died in 1961.
Survivors include three daughters, June Biava of Novato, Calif., Joyce Ciancarelli of Portsmouth, N.H., and Gail Epstein of Poughkeepsie; a stepson, Frank L. Winne of Florida; three sisters, Helen Geer of Sun City, Ariz., Ethel LaPier of Pittsfield and Marion Jones of Avila Beach, Calif., seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Cherry Valley.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements are by the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
Winifred Olsen
March 26, 1997
Ms. Minifred L. Olsen, 70, of Middleline Road, Milton, died Wednesday at Saratoga Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Wilton, Ms. Olsen lived in Schenectady for many years and was a 1942 graduate of Nott Terrace High School.
She was a bookkeeper and for many years, working for the former Rudd Pontiac. Later, she worked in the same capacity for the former Star Furniture, retiring in 1992 from M. Gold & Sons Electrical Contractors.
Ms. Olsen was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Olsen of Ballston Spa; four brothers, Donald Olsen of Alplaus, Clarence and Kenneth Olsen, both of Niskayuna, and Earl Olsen of Schenectady; three sisters, Dorothy Febbie and Patricia Olsen, both of West Charlton and Joyce Olsen of Schenectady; three granddaughters and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Faith United Methodist Church, Brandywine and Eastern Avenues. Burial will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie.
Arrangements are by the N. Rossi & Sons Funeral Home.
Pearl Oby
March 27, 1997
Mrs. Pearl R. Eckler Oby, 84, of Duanesburg Road, Princetown, died Thursday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a short illness.
Born in the Pumpkin Hook section of Stark, Mrs. Oby was a graduate of Owen D. Young School in VanHornesville. She had been a resident of Princetown since 1938.
She was a baker and chef for more than 30 years at area restaurants, including the former Hub Restaurant in Duanesburg and Chevaliers Swiss Inn in Guilderland.
She worked in the same capacity at Bericals Diner, which subsequently became Rose's Diner. She retired in the mid-1970s.
Mrs. Oby attended Lynnwood Reformed Church.
Mrs. Oby owned harness racing horses for more than 50 years and was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association and New York State Harness Racing Association.
Her husband of 66 years, Clem B. Oby, died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Ila Mae Oby of Duanesburg; a sister, Helen M. Famulare of Richfield Springs; and a brother, Floyd Eckler of Richfield Springs.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady. Burial will be in Schenectady Memorial Park, Rotterdam.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Lynnwood Reformed Church.
Hazel Vosburgh
March 27, 1997
Hazel M. Vosburgh, 91, of the Palatine Nursing Home, formerly of McKinnley Road, Palatine Bridge, died Thursday at the home.
Born March 14, 1906 in Marshville, she was the daughter of Peter and Hattie Showerman Vosburgh. She was educated in Marshville and was a homemaker.
She married Henry Vosburgh on June 11, 1927. He died April 8, 1980.
Survivors include a daughter, Clara Vosburgh of Palatine Bridge.
Funeral services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie. Burial will take place at a later date in Fort Plain Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Henry Dado
March 27, 1997
Mr. Henry J. Dado, 77, of Tessiero Drive, Fort Johnson, died Friday morning at St. Mary's Hospital following a long illness.
Born Nov. 30, 1919 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Albert and Sophie Petera Dado. He had lived in Fort Johnson since 1954.
Mr. Dado was employed in the Large Steam Turbine Division of the General Electric Co. in Schenectady for 20 years before retiring in 1984.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with Troop A, 86th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized of the 6th Armored Division in the European Theater. He received the Bronze Star medal and his unit received a Presidential Unit Citation for its crossing of the Prum River.
Mr. Dado was a Roman Catholic.
Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Louise Chenault, whom he married Aug. 5, 1942; two daughters, Darlene Reichard of Delanson and Nancy Capel of Amsterdam; two brothers, Albert Dado and Theodore Dado of Amsterdam; two sisters, Lillian Slusarz of Scotia and Adele Gawlak of Amsterdam; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Betz Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
Services will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Mithen officiating.
Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in his memory to the Wellness Institute of St. Mary's Hospital, care of the Foundation of St. Mary's Hospital.
Mary Smith
March 27, 1997
Mary Greig Smith, 94, formerly of Kreisel Terrace, Amsterdam, died Friday morning at Montgomery Meadows. She formerly was a resident of the Sarah Jane Sanford Home in Amsterdam and the St. Johnsville Nursing Home.
Born June 1, 1902 in Montrose, Scotland, the daughter of David and Charlotte Loney Smith. She came to Amsterdam in 1911.
Miss Smith was a graduate of the Oneonta Normal Teachers School, the Albany State Teachers College, and received her master's degree from the College St. Rose.
She was an elementary and junior high school teacher in the Amsterdam City School District for many years, retiring in 1964.
Miss Smith was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Schenectady, and a member of the Daughters of the Nile.
She was a communicant of the United Presbyterian Church of Amsterdam.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 12 to 2 p.m. Monday at the Betz Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dan J. Wheeler officiating.
Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in her memory to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps., care of the funeral home.
