Martha Cordone
March 31, 1997
Martha Cordone, 79, of Mayfield, died at her home Monday morning.
Born Feb. 3, 1918, in Gloversville, she was the daughter of Albert and Adelia Denmark Rocklin. She was educated in local schools and moved to Mayfield in 1958.
Mrs. Cordone held various jobs in the local leather industry.
She married Paul R. Cordone in 1944.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Lynn Kaiser of Amsterdam; a stepdaughter, Barbara Ann Albanese of Clifton Park; and a stepson, Paul R. Cordone Jr. of Gloversville; a sister, Lorena Kratky of Venice, Fla.; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two nieces.
A prayer service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home Inc., Second Avenue, Gloversville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church, Gloversville. Intombment will take place in the family mausoleum in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Laura Bower
March 29, 1997
Laura Bower, 87, formerly of Broadalbin, died Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla.
Born Nov. 26, 1909 in Union Mills, she was the daughter of Louis and Carie Luthye Ballweber and was a graduate of Broadalbin High School. She later graduated from the Oneonta Teacher's Training Class.
Mrs. Bower taught school in Broadalbin and Perth, and later taught first grade at Boulevard School in Gloversville for more than 40 years, retiring in the late 1960s.
She was active in local and county Republican Clubs. Mrs. Bower was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Broadalbin and served as matron.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Broadalbin.
She married John J. Bower on Oct. 30, 1931. He died March 22, 1991.
Survivors include a son, Phil Bower of Tallahassee; a brother, Louis Ballweber of Mayfield; a sister, Rebecca Gorthy of Glens Falls; three grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted in Tallahassee. Burial will take place at the Broadalbin Cemetery at a later date. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced at the First Presbyterian Church in Broadalbin.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Local arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., Broadalbin.

Robert Giaquinto
March 31, 1997
Robert A. Giaquinto, 68, of The Mall, Amsterdam, died Monday at Saratoga hospital after a brief illness.
Born July 19, 1928 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Peter and Theresa Audi Giaquinto. He was a 1945 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School, and a lifelong city resident.
Mr. Giaquinto was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was employed as a truck driver with the Boss-Linco Trucking Firm for many years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Teamster's Union Local 279 of Albany.
He was also a member of the South Side Veterans Association, and the Armory Grill and Port Jackson Bocce leagues.
He married Rosalie Natale on Nov. 9, 1952.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Peter Giaquinto of Ballston Spa; a daughter, Donna Rose Krawczyk of Ballston Spa; three sisters, Olympia Vottis of Schenectady, Lena Scarofile and Celia Stoddard, both of Amsterdam; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the De Stefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery.
A calling hour will be conducted from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the South Side Veterans Monument Restoration Fund in care of Richard Dantini, 24 Essex St., or the Rubin Dialysis Center, 59 C. Myrtle St., Saratoga Springs, 12866; or the American Diabetes Association, 50 Colvin Ave., Albany, 12206-1106.

Donna McLain
March 30, 1997
Mrs. Donna L. McLain, 54, of Prospect Avenue, Gloversville, died Sunday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a long illness.
Born in Gloversville, Mrs. McLain was a graduate of Gloversville High School and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. McLain was a specialist fourth class in the U.S. Army and served in Alabama.
She was a housekeeper at Nathan Littauer Hospital.
Mrs. McLain was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Christy Alvarez of Amsterdam; a brother, Thomas Townsend of Gloversville, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Ave. Burial will take place at a later date in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Albany Medical Center Hospital Dialysis Center.

Francis Baurle Jr.
March 31, 1997
Francis J. Baurle Jr., 68, of Caroga Lake, died Monday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after a long illness.
Born and educated in Gloversville, Mr. Baurle was a lifelong area resident.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served in the Army Reserve.
Mr. Baurle was employed as a truck driver for 35 years at Korkay Co. in Broadalbin and later worked for Coleco Industries in Mayfield, retiring in 1988 due to the onset of illness.
He was an assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 14 and a member of the Caroga Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Adirondack CB Club.
Mr. Baurle was a member of the North Bush United Methodist Church.
He married Alma Wadsworth Baurle on Jan. 10, 1970.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Paula F. Baurle of Caroga Lake, Susan Farhart and Roxanne Watson, both of Mayfield; two stepdaughters, Barbara Williams and Terri Lyon, both of Gloversville; four brothers, Gardner and Allen Baurle, both of Gloversville, Emmett Baurle of Johnstown and Donald Baurle of Queensbury; a sister, Donna Wyllie of Mayfield; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville. Burial will take place at a later date in Wadsworth Cemetery, Hope.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Caroga Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

Blanche Holland
March 31, 1997
Mrs. Blanche Holland, 87, of McDonald Drive, Fort Johnson, died Monday evening at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Pearl Halvey
March 31, 1997
Pearl Halvey, 88, of Pine Street Extension, Broadalbin, died Monday at the Mariner Hospital in Port Orange, Fla.
Born June 10, 1908 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of David and Emma Johnson. She was educated in Amsterdam schools and was a glovemaker before retiring. She was a former member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion Post No. 8690 Auxiliary.
Her husband, James P. Halvey, died in 1957.
Survivors include two sons, James P. Halvey Jr. and Richard W. Halvey, both of Amsterdam; and several grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Robert Doxey officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson.
Calling hours are Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

John Gavel
April 2, 1997
John Gavel, 90, of James Street, Amsterdam, died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital.
He was born May 10, 1906 in Amsterdam, and moved to Europe at an early age. He returned to Amsterdam at the age of 17.
Mr. Gavel was employed as a machinist for the General Electric Co. in Schenectady until retiring in 1972.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.
He was married to Stella Ilnicki Gavel. She died on March 2, 1981.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph J. Gavel and John A. Gavel, both of Amsterdam; three daughters, Dolores Miller of San Diego, Calif., Sylvia Kowalski of Irving, Texas, and Carolyn Deay of Amsterdam; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Marilyn Whitney
April 2, 1997
Marilyn J. Whitney, 66, of 21 McCleary Ave., Amsterdam, died Wednesday afternoon at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a short illness.
Born Sept. 30, 1930 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Otto and Lela Hoffman Strack.
Mrs. Whitney was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam and a 1948 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Mrs. Whitney was employed by the Holzheimer & Shaul Store in Amsterdam for 35 years.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 487, Broadalbin, and was a past matron. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Amsterdam.
She married Robert J. Whitney on April 26, 1975.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two stepsons, Paul Whitney of Portland, Maine, and Michael Whitney of Birmingham, Ala.; a stepdaughter, Patricia Morini of Amsterdam; a brother, Otto Strack Jr. of Ballston Spa; a sister, Joyce Wellman of Inverness, Fla; five step-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Alfred Kahler officiating. Burial of cremains will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps of Amsterdam in care of the funeral home.

Robert Scott
April 1, 1997
Robert Gordon Scott, of Riviera Circle, Larkspur, Calif., died Tuesday at his home.
Born in Amsterdam in 1927, he was the son of John D. and Christina Beaton Scott. He was a graduate of Mercersburg Academy, the University of California at Berkeley and attended Boalt Hall School of Law.
He served with the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 in post-war Europe, earning a field commission as second lieutenant.
He was admitted to the California Bar Association in 1955. Mr. Scott practiced law in San Francisco from 1955 to 1969. He was owner and chief executive officer of the Van Der Horst Corp. of America, retiring in 1988 due to poor health.
Mr. Scott was a member of the San Francisco and California Bar Association; co-founder of the San Francisco Police Athletic League in 1958 and the New Frontier Democratic Club in 1960.
Survivors include his former wife, Carol Cicurel Scott; two daughters, F. Christine Scott of Los Angeles, and Ellen Alexandra Scott of Larkspur; two sisters, Sarah Scott Blumenfeld of Boxford, Mass. and Elizabeth Scott Blase of Naples, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Montgomery Memorial Chapel at the San Francisco Theological Seminary at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Arrangements are by the Neptune Society of Marin, 700 Larkspur Landing Circle, Suite 163, Larkspur, Calif.

John Naple
April 2, 1997
John P. "Sonny" Naple, 80, of Kimball Street, Amsterdam, died Wednesday morning at his home.
Born March 16, 1917 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Pasquale and Maria Rosa Umberto Naplolitano. He was a lifelong resident and attended local schools.
Mr. Naple was employed at the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mills until its closing. He then worked for 27 years with the New York State Thruway Authority, retiring in 1980.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army's 80th Division in Europe. During his youth, he was a star basketball player with the former Amsterdam Textile Basketball Team. He was a member of the Amsterdam YMCA and played on its handball league. Mr. Naple was also an assistant Boy Scout master and a member of the Catholic War Veterans.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
He married the former Dorothy Huckans on May 26, 1946.
In addition to his wife, survivors include five sons, John P. Naple and Richard P. Naple, both of Amsterdam, Steven P. Naple of Broadalbin, William L. Naple of Lasselsville, and Timothy M. Naple of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Marie L. Naple of San Diego, Calif., and Woodstock, Vt., a sister, Rose DiMenno of Amsterdam; 18 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. Interment is in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Amsterdam YMCA.
