Lillian Carpenter
January 4, 1998
Lillian Carpenter, 92, of East Center Street, Mohawk, died Sunday at home.
Born June 26, 1905, in Nelliston, she was the daughter of Edward and Esther Smith Dygert. She attended Nelliston schools.
In her early years, she was employed at Beech-Nut in Canajoharie, retiring several years ago.
Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the Mohawk Reformed Church and a member of the Rebecca Lodge in Mohawk.
She was married to Freeman Carpenter, who died in 1977.
Survivors include three sisters, Alice Smith of Fort Plain, Evelyn Dygert of Palatine Bridge and Hazel Dygert of Nelliston; three nieces, two nephews, a cousin, several great-nieces and great-nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk, with the Rev. James DeWitt, pastor of the Mohawk Reformed Church, officiating.
Spring burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Little Falls.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mohawk Reformed Church or to MOVAC.

Margaret R. Ley
January 3, 1998
Mrs. Margaret "Peg" Ley, 79, of North Main Street, Broadalbin, died Saturday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 5, 1918, in New Haven, Conn., she was the daughter of Frederick William and Louisa Weller Rimler. She was a graduate of New Haven Commercial High School. Mrs. Ley moved to Amsterdam in 1950, and has resided in Broadalbin since 1952.
She was a communicant of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Amsterdam.
She married Henry C. Ley on Feb. 4, 1942.
In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, Harold Ley of Rochester, Russell Ley of Scotia and Richard Ley of Saratoga Springs; four daughters, Cynthia Knotts of Wichita, Kan., Diane Ley of Cohoes, Wendy Ley of Chelmsford, Mass., and Peggy Ann Richter of East Longmeadow, Mass.; a sister, Marie Sheiffele of Hamden, Conn.; eight grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Office for the Burial of the Dead will be read and Holy Eucharist celebrated by the Rev. Christopher A. Smith at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Episcopal Church, 37 Division St., Amsterdam. Cremation will follow at Vale Crematory.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson-Lindsay Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made to charity of one's choice.

Robert M. Hearn
January 3, 1998
Mr. Robert M. Hearn, 90, formerly of East Hill, Canajoharie, died Saturday at the Martin Luther Nursing Home in Clinton, where he resided since 1989.
Born June 21, 1907, in Port Byron, he was the son of Michael E. Hearn and Julia Quinn. He graduated from Savannah High School in Rochester and attended Auburn Business College in Auburn. He lived in Canajoharie from 1959 to 1989.
He was employed at the New York State Employment Office in Rochester and later was a salesman for American Greeting Co., in Rochester. He was then the owner and operator of Hearn's Corner Store in Canajoharie retiring in 1972.
Mr. Hearn was a communicant of St. Peter's & Paul's Catholic Church in Canajoharie.
He overcome polio as a young boy.
Mr. Hearn was a former member of the Canajoharie-Palatine Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Canajoharie Country Club.
He married Mary M. Burkhard on April 22, 1946. She died Aug. 2, 1993.
Survivors include two daughters, Regina H. McGuire of Fairfield, Conn., and Colleen J. Perry of Clinton; two sons, Brian Q. Hearn of Canajoharie and Stephen B. Hearn of Hampton; a brother, William M. Hearn of Canajoharie; five grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Robert R. Hearn in 1982.
A prayer service will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's & Paul's Catholic Church, Canajoharie. Spring burial will be in St. Peter's & Paul's Cemetery, Canajoharie.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, Capital District Chapter, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, 12206, or to the Disabled American Veterans, County Annex Building, Fonda 12068.

Joseph P. Gavry
January 4, 1998
Joseph P. Gavry, 79, of Summit Avenue, Amsterdam, died Sunday morning at his home.
Born Nov. 16, 1918, in Amsterdam, he was the son of Stephen and Sadie Stanionis Gavrylczyk. He attended local schools and was a lifelong resident.
Mr. Gavry was employed for more than 30 years by the General Electric Co. in Schenectady, before retiring in January of 1982.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Military Police in the United States.
He was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, and was one of the first commentators appointed to serve and lead worship at Mass.
He was a member of the G.E. Quarter Century Club.
He married Helen Stankevich on Aug. 4, 1947.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Paul Gavry of the Town of Florida and Christopher J. Gavry of Boston, Mass.; a brother, Bernard Gavry of Garden Grove, Calif.; two grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. this afternoon at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of St. John the Baptist. Burial will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery.
A calling period will begin at noon today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Frank I. Brooks
January 3, 1998
Frank I. Brooks, 84, of Honeywell Corners Road, Broadalbin, died Saturday morning at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a brief illness.
Born March 17, 1913, in Mayfield, he was the son of Watson and Amy Jeffers Brooks.
He was educated locally and was a lifelong area resident.
For 19 years, he was employed by the Broadalbin Central School as a custodian. He had previously been employed by the General Electric Co. in Schenectady and the Mohasco Corp. in Amsterdam.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Holy Name Society, Perth Senior Citizens, and the Senior Citizens Bowling League.
Mr. Brooks was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Broadalbin.
He married Stella Bilobran on June 7, 1936.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, David Brooks of Broadalbin; two grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Church, Broadalbin. Spring burial will be at Union Mills Cemetery in Broadalbin.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Church, Broadalbin.

William Raabe
January 2, 1998
William Raabe, 85, of East State Street, Gloversville, died Friday at the Lexington Center after a brief illness.
Mr. Raabe was born in Gloversville and was a lifelong area resident.
He attended the Gloversville Lexington Senior Day Treatment Center.
There are no immediate survivors.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Tuesday at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lexington Center.

Susan Musto
January 3, 1998
Mrs. Susan Musto, 100, formerly of Gloversville, died Saturday at the Fulton County Infirmary.
Born in Italy, Mrs. Musto lived most of her life in the Fulton County area.
She was the widow of Thomas Musto.
Survivors include a daughter, Norma Blanco of Palm Harbor, Fla.
A private service will be conducted in St. John's Cemetery, Darien, Conn.
Arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

Frank Giglio
January 4, 1998
Mr. Frank Giglio, 99, of Touareuna Road, Hoffmans, died Sunday morning at Albany Veterans Administration Hospital.
Mr. Giglio was born May 18, 1898 in Hoffmans, where he was also educated.
For 42 years, he was employed by the New York State Barge Canal System as chief lock operator at Lock 7 in Niskayuna.
Mr. Giglio was a World War I veteran of the U.S. Army and a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.
He was a 50-year member and former chief of the Hoffmans Volunteer Fire Department, past commander of the James T. Bergen Post 39, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a longtime member of the 4th Ivy Division.
Mr. Giglio was a communicant of St. Margaret of Cortona Roman Catholic Church, Rotterdam Junction.
He married Florence Giglio on July 1, 1926. She died Sept. 25, 1963.
Survivors include a son, Vincent Giglio of Schoharie; a daughter, Florence Rivera of Kinderhook; six grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret of Cortona Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Rotterdam Junction. Burial will be at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Glenville.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Margaret of Cortona Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Rotterdam Junction, 12150.

Mary Sism
January 3, 1998
Mary Cruthers Sism, 97, died Saturday morning at the Wilkinson Extended Care Facility in Amsterdam.
Born Oct. 8, 1900, in the Town of Providence, she was the daughter of Fred and Gertrude Craig Wolfe. She was educated in Ballston Spa., and graduated from the Oneonta Normal School for Teachers.
For 37 years, she was a teacher with the Broadalbin Central School System, mainly at the elementary level.
She attended Broadalbin Methodist Church.
Mrs. Sism was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Fulton County Retired Teachers Association, the Cloverdale Rebecca Lodge, the Broadalbin and Galway Senior Citizens, and a 70-year charter member of the Broadalbin American Legion Auxiliary.
She was married in 1920 to Truman Cruthers; he died in 1949. In 1951, she married Arthur Sism, he died in 1965.
Survivors include a son, Richard Cruthers of Copiague, a daughter, Millicent Brown of Galway, three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours.
Burial will be at Broadalbin Cemetery.
A memorial service will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin Methodist Church or the Providence Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Galway, 12074.
Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Broadalbin.
