Milton Furman
February 23, 1998
Milton W. "Sarge" Furman, 82, of Hawk Street, Schenectady, died Monday at the home of his daughter in Albany after a short illness.
Born in Schenectady, Mr. Furman was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School.
A former American Locomotive Co. employee, Mr. Furman served in the Schenectady Police Department for 35 years, retiring as a detective sergeant in 1978.
Mr. Furman was a member of Schenectady Lodge 1174, Free and Accepted Masons.
He was a 32nd-degree member of the Scottish Rite, Cyprus Temple and a member of the Schenectady Police Benevolent Association.
He was an award-winning body builder in Schenectady for many years.
His wife, Lois Mae Renz Furman, whom he married Aug. 16, 1946, died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Ann Weidman of Albany; two sisters, Helen Grundhoeffer of Parsippany, N.J. and Marion Luther of Schenectady; a brother, Louis Furman of St. Johnsville; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted in the spring at Esperance Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway at Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady. Members of Schenectady Lodge 1174 will conduct a service at 4 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany or Community Hospice of Schenectady.

Marion E. Blowers
February 23, 1998
Mrs. Marion E. Blowers, 81, of Old Trail Road, Johnstown, died Monday at home.
Born Feb. 17, 1917, in the Town of Mohawk, she was the daughter of Carl and Estella Hollenbeck VanAntwerp. She was lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Blowers assisted in the operation of the family farm through several generations, along with her father when the farm was known as the Elmview Farm, Old Trail Road, which was later operated by her husband and now by her son.
She was a former member of the Reformed Church, Fonda.
She married George W. Blowers, Sept. 4, 1937. He died Sept. 29, 1979.
Survivors include a son, Richard C. Blowers of Johnstown; four daughters, Shirley Weiermiller of Elmira, Janice Born of Plano, Texas, Susan Dupras of Ballston Lake and Barbara Warschawski of Gloversville; a sister, Margaret Brower of Johnstown; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, with the Rev. Jack Peters, pastor of the Village Bible Church in Fonda officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, 12078.

Robert J. Shields
February 24, 1998
Robert J. Shields, 50, of Storrie Street, Amsterdam, died Tuesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 8, 1947, he was the son of George W. and Dorothy Phillips Shields. He was a 1966 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
He was employed as a driver for the Coca-Cola Co. in Gloversville and Albany, retiring several years ago due to disability.
Mr. Shields was the treasurer of the Northeast Senior Baby Ruth League and was also very active in various senior and junior baseball programs over the years in Amsterdam.
He was of the Roman Catholic faith.
Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Shields of Amsterdam; a son, Robert J. Shields Jr. of Charolette, N.C.; a sister, Doris J. Lawyer of Johnstown; a grandson and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be private and conducted at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Betz Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Margy M. Shaw
February 24, 1998
Miss Margy M. Shaw, 95, formerly of Western Boulevard, Gloversville, died Tuesday at the Wilkinson Health Care Center, Amsterdam, after a short illness.
Born in Gloversville, Miss Shaw was a 1920 graduate of Gloversville High School and a graduate of the Gloversville Business School, where she later taught from 1922 to 1929.
She was a bookkeeper and manager for several New York City area businesses. After moving back to Gloversville, she worked in the same capacity for a number of local businesses, retiring in 1964.
Miss Shaw was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.
She also was a former member of the YMCA.
Survivors include a cousin, Eleanor Getman of Fonda.
A service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave. Spring burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
A calling hour will be prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to charity.

Morris Robb
February 20, 1998
Morris Robb, 81, of Las Vegas, formerly of Gloversville, died Friday in Las Vegas.
Born in Gloversville, Mr. Robb was a graduate of Gloversville High School.
During World War II, he served with the Army.
For many years, Mr. Robb worked in California designing storefront advertising, until retiring and moving to Nevada.
He was a former member of Knesseth Israel Synagogue.
Survivors include a nephew, Benjamin Robb of Gloversville; and a niece, Francine Robb of Norwalk, Conn.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in Knesseth Israel Cemetery.
A memorial service will take place in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice.
Local arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home.

Rose Finateri
February 24, 1998
Mrs. Rose Brunetto Finateri, 88, of School Street, Johnstown, died Tuesday at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam.
Born in Graniti, Italy, Mrs. Finateri attended Johnstown schools.
She was a glove maker for the Superb Glove and Sutton Glove companies, retiring in 1953.
Mrs. Finateri was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church.
Her husband, Angelo J. Finateri, whom she married June 30, 1934, died in 1995.
Survivors include a son, Angelo E. Finateri of Fort Johnson; a daughter, Marie LeFevar of Gloversville; a sister, Minnie Oliver of Johnstown; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A prayer service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, corner of Main and Melcher streets, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Spring burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Nancy E. Cooke
February 24, 1998
Nancy E. "Double D" Cooke, 62, of Voorhees Street, Amsterdam, died Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Born Aug. 17, 1935 in Syracuse, she moved to Amsterdam in 1975.
She worked as a delivery person for The Recorder and the Daily Gazette for many years until becoming ill.
Ms. Cooke was a base operator for many years for local two-way radio users.
She was a member of the Pilgrim Holiness Church of Amsterdam.
Survivors include her fiance, Paul Drake of Amsterdam; and many friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Aaron Sherman officiating.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Fryes Bush Cemetery, Fort Plain, in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Anneira Van Avery
June 7, 1998
Anneira Van Avery, 75, of Center Street, Fultonville, died Sunday at North Adams Regional Hospital in North Adams, Mass.
Born in Fultonville, she was the daughter of Christopher and Bertha McNiece James and was located in local schools.
She was employed as a glovemaker for Swears Glove Co. in Johnstown from the time she was 16 until she retired 25 years ago.
She was a member of the fonda Fultonville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Nelson Van Avery of Fultonville and David Van Avery of johnstown; three daughters, Noreen Langford of Amsterdam, Paula Whitman of Mayfield and Kathy Nunnally of Anniston, Ala.; two brothers, Kenneth James of Fultonville and Bernard James of California; 23 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville. Burial will be in Maple Avenue Cemetery in Fultonville.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Montgomery County Society to Prevent Cruelty to Animals, Route 5S, Amsterdam, 12010.

Roy E. Darling
June 6, 1998
Roy E. Darling, 57, of East Main Street, Johnstown, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a brief illness.
Born July 20, 1940 in Gloversville, he was the son of Ralph E. and Gladys Warner Darling and was a lifelong area resident.
He was employed at Argotsingers Poultry Farm many years ago and at C.G. Tanner and Son in Gloversville for 21 years before retiring.
Mr. Darling was a member of The Redmen's Club of Johnstown and was a former member of the Broadalbin Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, of Gloversville, survivors include a daughter, Vicki L. Winn of Northville; two brothers, Robert J. Darling of Gloversville and James D. Darling of Johnstown; two grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. Burial will be in Broadalbin Rural Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany, 12205.

Lottie Kretser
June 7, 1998
Mrs. Lottie Nealy Kretser, 95, of the St. Johnsville Nursing Home and a former resident of New Turnpike Road, Fort Plain, died Sunday at the nursing home after a long illness.
Born May 5, 1903 in Johnstown, she was the daughter of Elias Warner Leavenworth and Eudora Susan Buck. She was educated in Ephratah and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Kretser was employed most of her working life at various glove shops and also worked at Beech-Nut Nutrition Corp. for five years. She retired in 1982 from Noone's Glove Shop in Johnstown after 16 years of service.
She was a member of the Ephratah United Methodist Church, and was also a member of the W.S.C.S. of the church and also the AARP.
She married Frank Kretser on Dec. 2, 1920. He died June 28, 1962.
Survivors include seven sons, Melvin W., William J., Arnold S., and Roger C. Kretser, all of Fort Plain, Derward Kretser of Kennewick, Wash., Ralph E. Kretser of Tok, Ak., and Gary Kretser of St. Johnsville; three daughters, Irene E. VanEvera and Geraldine Nellis, both of St. Johnsville, and Beverly J. Cotton of Fort Plain; 49 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Camillus Mourice of Stone Arabia United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Ephratah Rural Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
