Anthony LaBate
January 18, 1999
Anthony J. "Boston" LaBate, 88, of Park Hill Adult Home, formerly of James Street, Amsterdam, died Monday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Born April 18, 1910, in Amsterdam, he was the son of Annunziato and Maria St. Angelo LaBate. He was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. LaBate was employed by Nathan's Waste & Paper Stock in Amsterdam for 60 years before retiring in 1995.
He was the secretary for the Amsterdam Men's City Bowling league for more than 45 years, secretary and treasurer of the Carpet City Classic Bowling League, secretary of Businessmen's Bowling League, and former president, treasurer and member of the board of directors of the Amsterdam Bowling Association. He was inducted into the Amsterdam Bowling Hall of Fame in 1981.
Mr. LaBate was also a member of the Columbian Italian American Social Club of Amsterdam.
He was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
Mr. LaBate married Rose Palamara Sept. 16, 1934. She died Dec. 21, 1992.
Survivors include a son, Anthony LaBate of Tamarack, Fla.; a daughter, Maryrose Bradt of Amsterdam; four brothers, Joseph LaBate of Herkimer, Samuel LaBate, Peter LaBate and Jacob LaBate, all of Amsterdam; two sisters, Mary LaBate of Amsterdam and Madeline Van Allen of Amsterdam; seven grandsons, two step-grandsons; nine great-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter.
The funeral is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Grove Street, Amsterdam.
Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Church Memorial Fund or to the Amsterdam Junior Bowling Association.

Addison Gilbert
January 17, 1999
Addison G. Gilbert Jr., 59, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died Sunday.
The son of Addison & Marian Gilbert, he graduated in 1957 from Broadalbin High School. He attended Palm Beach Junior College, Albany State Teachers College, and Albany Business College.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Gilbert; two sons, Addison Gilbert III and Steven Gilbert, both of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and a brother, Fred Gilbert of Gloversville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5200 E. Ave., West Palm Beach, Fla. 33407; or the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital, 1309 N. Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach, Fla. 33401.

Jane Allen
January 19, 1999
Jane Allen, 89, of Eagle Street, Amsterdam, died this morning at Montgomery Meadows.
Arrangements are by the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, and will be announced at a later date.

Chester Bojanowski
January 18, 1999
Chester Bojanowski, 76, of Amsterdam, died Monday at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady.
Arrangements, by the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, are incomplete and will be announced at a later date.

Lorraine Lucynski
January 18, 1999
Lorraine A. Lucynski, 76, of Locust Avenue, Amsterdam, died Monday at home.
Arrangements, by the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, are incomplete and will be announced at a later date.

Leona Davis
January 18, 1999
Leona E. Davis, 92, formerly of Skiff Road, Northville, died Monday at the Fulton County Infirmary after a long illness.
Born in the Town of Northampton, Mrs. Davis was educated in Northville.
A glove worker, she retired from the LeRowe Glove Company in 1969.
Mrs. Davis attended Perth Bible Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew Davis, in 1976.
Survivors include two sons, Edward Davis of Gloversville and Sanford Davis of Malone; three daughters, Betty Kenyon of Broadalbin, Anna King of Hopewell, Va., and Eleanor Gordon of Gloversville; two sisters, Grace Coffey of Albany and Laura Conklin of Gloversville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral and burial will be in the spring at a date to be announced.
Memorial contributions may be made to Perth Bible Church, 1863 Route 107, Amsterdam 12010
Arrangements are by the Northville Funeral Home.

Carmela DeRose
January 18, 1999
Carmela Russo DeRose, 77, of Harvard Avenue, Amsterdam, died Monday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born July 28, 1921, in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Anthony and Angela M. Sorrention Russo. Mrs. DeRose was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
She worked at various glove shops in the area and later was a cook for the Montgomery County Infirmary in Amsterdam for several years, retiring in 1986.
Mrs. DeRose was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.
She Married Carl DeRose June 11, 1944. He died March 27,1991.
Survivors include a sister, Josephine Conte of Amsterdam; and two brothers, Nicholas and Herman Ross, both of Amsterdam.
The funeral is 9 a.m. Thursday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Grove Street.
Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Church Memorial Fund.

Donald LaComb
January 18, 1999
Donald A. LaComb, 70, of Pickle Hill Road, Fort Plain, died suddenly at home Monday.
Born Aug. 28, 1928, in Trenton, he was the son of Edward J. and Mabel Eckert LaComb. He was educated in Holland Patent, and lived in Hinckley before moving to Fort Plain where he lived most of his life prior.
He was an auto mechanic at Voght's Garage in Canajoharie for 35 years, retiring in 1980.
Mr. LaComb was a World War II veteran and served with the U.S. Navy.
He attended Aldersgate Free Methodist Church in Canajoharie.
Mr. LaComb was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 853 of Canajoharie and Moose Lodge 2276 of Dade City, Fla. He was also a former member and former second assistant chief of the South Minden Volunteer Fire Department.
He married Helen Caldwell July 24, 1947.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his mother; two sons, Donald E. LaComb of Canajoharie and David H. LaComb of Fort Plain; four daughters, Louise Folts of Fort Plain, Pauline Monk of Dade City, Fla., Cindy Peeler of Verona, N.J., and Linda Conklin of St. Johnsville; four brothers Raymond LaComb, John LaComb and Kevin LaComb all of Hinckley, and Robert LaComb of Steuben; three sisters, Eunice Caldwell of Coldbrook, Ruth Moore of Connecticut, and Gladys Peterson of Fresno, Calif; 23 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 10 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating.
Cremation will be at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady.
Burial of cremains will be in Ohio, N.Y., at a later date.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, Box 126, Canajoharie 13317; or Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Department, Box 28, Canajoharie 133317.

Earl Ostrander
January 19, 1999
Earl Ostrander, 84, formerly of Carmichael Street, Amsterdam, died Tuesday at the Palatine Nursing Home, where he lived since October.
Born in Cranberry Creek, Mr. Ostrander was educated in Mayfield.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army in the Pacific.
For many years, Mr. Ostrander was a truck driver for the Ashline Trucking Company in Corinth. In 1974 he retired from the Town of Chester Highway Department.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian Tennison Ostrander, in 1993.
Survivors include a son, William O. Steenbergh of Gloversville; a stepson, Lavern Tennison of North Creek; two daughters, Lorraine Maloy of Arlington, Texas, and Fred Siegle of Amsterdam; a half-brother, Leon Ostrander of Mayfield; 21 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday at the Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St., Northville.
Spring burial will be in King Cemetery, Northampton.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Palatine Nursing Home, Lafayette Street, Palatine Bridge 13428.

Louise Unislawski
January 20, 1999
Louise Otto Unislawski, 93, of 4 VanWyck St., Gloversville, died Wednesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a short illness.
Born July 7, 1905, in Halberstadt, Germany, she was the daughter of Gustav and Martha Otto. She moved to Gloversville in 1926.
She was employed by Schine Enterprises of Gloversville, and later by the Naudin family of Gloversville as a housekeeper for many years.
Mrs. Unislawski was a member of St. James Church, Gloversville.
She was predeceased by her husband, Herman Unislawski, in 1977; and by a son, Henry Unislawski.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph Unislawski of Johnstown and Herbert J. Unislawski of Gloversville; a sister, Erna Gersthemier of Akron, Ohio; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, with the Rev. Lauretta J. Dietrich officiating.
Spring interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 521 N. Main St., Gloversville 12078; or to a charity of one's choice.

Arthur Goss
January 20, 1999
Arthur G. Goss 79, of Garden Street, Amsterdam, died Wednesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Born March 28, 1919, in New London, Conn., he was the son of Frederick and Patience Chamberlain Goss. He moved to Amsterdam in 1946.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army and the U.S. Merchant Marines.
Mr. Goss was first employed as a boiler room operator by St. Mary's Hospital and later as a custodian by Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1972.
He attended St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amsterdam.
Mr. Goss was predeceased by his daughter, Patience Goss Zea, June 9, 1995.
He married June Porath March 29, 1947.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, George Goss of Amsterdam; four daughters, June Miles of Schenectady, Ida Brown of Perth, and Debbie VanBuren and Cheryl Goss, both of Amsterdam; a sister, Mattie Daniels of Mystic, Conn.; 22 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Janice Caiazzo officiating.
Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
