Mary Wirene
February 24, 1999
Mary Miller Wirene, 78, formerly of Niskayuna, died Wednesday at the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia after a long illness.
Born and raised in Johnstown, Mrs. Wirene was a 1942 graduate of Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Md., where she received a bachelor's degree in English. She moved to Schenectady in 1942.
During the 1940s, Mrs. Wirene worked for the General Electric Co. in Schenectady. During the 1960s and 1970s, she was a realtor for McCabe and Willig in Niskayuna.
Mrs. Wirene was active with the Schenectady Girl Scouts and was a member of the Mohawk Golf and the Schenectady Stockade Association.
She was a communicant of St. George's Episcopal Church and was a member of its Altar Guild. She was the former director of The Shop at the Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, William A. Wirene Sr., in 1981.
Survivors include a son, W.A. Wirene Jr., of Clinton; two daughters, Mary Lou Bates of Niskayuna and Jamie Schwarzfeld of Pelham Manor; a step-daughter, Barbara Hillis Samson of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. George's Episcopal Church, 30 N. Ferry St., Schenectady.
Burial is private.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Baxter-Andrew Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. George's Church.

Frank Zegarelli
December 30, 1998
Frank Zegarelli, 79, of Foster City, Calif., died Dec. 30.
Born April 23, 1919, in Amsterdam, he was the son of Carmela and Benedict Zegarelli. He attended schools in Amsterdam.
He entered the Navy in 1942 serving in the Pacific as a pharmacist mate.
Mr. Zegarelli's first career was as a professional singer. He performed with Naval bands and on armed service radio until 1946. Upon leaving the service, he joined the Pipers, a 22-piece band in Chicago, and signed a recording contract with Victor Records and Music Corps. of America until the orchestra disbanded.
He continued to work in Chicago under the name Frank Martin, appearing in nightclubs, on radio and television. He appeared in the film A City That Never Sleeps and several short musical subjects.
He was an active board member of the Professional Ballet School and Young Artists Ballet Theatre.
He is survived by his wife, Denise of Foster City, Calif.; a daughter, Carmela Peter of Foster City, Calif.; seven sisters, Connie Lee, Joanna O'Day, Georgia Whitten, and Nancy Frascatore, all of Alabama, Rose Goldner of Florida, Angie Isabel of Amsterdam, and Claire Istorico of Albany; four brothers, Ben Zigarelli of San Diego, Anthony Zigarelli, Dominic Zigarelli, and Joey Zigarelli of Alabama; a granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.
Cremation took place at the Desert Memorial Cremation and Burial Society, Las Vegas.

The Rev. Edna Felter
February 23, 1999
The Rev. Edna M. Felter, 80, formerly of Lafayette Street, Palatine Bridge, died Tuesday in Bethel.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie.

John Lucas
April 27, 1999
John M. Lucas, 52, of Sixth Avenue, Gloversville, died at home Tuesday after being stricken.
Born Aug. 12, 1946, in Gloversville, he was the son of Edward and Lillian Hobbs Lucas. He was a lifelong area resident and a 1964 graduate of Gloversville High School.
He served in the Army National Guard.
Mr. Lucas was a Gloversville firefighter for several years in the 1970s and a self-employed certified chimney sweep until the onset of his disability.
He married Darlene Meyers, who died 1978. He married Angelina B. Capparello in 1994.
In addition to his wife, survivors his mother; two sons, John Lucas Jr. and Eric Lucas, both of Gloversville; a stepson, Daniel Szabo Jr. of Largo, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Tracie Jo Gallt of Johnstown; a brother, Michael Lucas of Gloversville, two sisters, Sandra Raco of Gloversville and Valorie Cowell of Danbury, Conn.; two grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Lindsay D. Lucas.
The funeral is 10 a.m. Thursday at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St, Gloversville, with the Rev. R.W. Williams officiating.
Interment will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York, 3 Washington Square, Albany 12205.

Marion Mahar
April 27, 1999
Marion E. Mahar, 82, formerly of Pine Street, Gloversville, died Tuesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home after a long illness.
Born in Rockwood, Mrs. Mahar worked for several area glove shops before retiring in 1978.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Johnstown.
Mrs. Mahar married Charles Rossiter in 1936. He died in 1938.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.
Burial will be in Rockwood Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Barbara Musbek
April 26, 1999
Barbara G. Musbek, 65, of Circle Drive, Johnstown, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a long illness.
Mrs. Musbek was born in Shelton, Conn.
She was a homemaker.
She married George R. Musbek Sr. June 21, 1954. He died in 1997.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna Burge of Paragon, Ind., and Pamela Musbek of Branford, Conn.; two sons, George R. Musbek Jr. of Newport, N.H., and Alan Musbek of Shelton; two sisters, Harriet Sambrook of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Edna "Pinky" Wolfe of Fonda; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at the A.G Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.
Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery.
A calling hour will begin prior to the service at the funeral home.

Hilda Jones
April 25, 1999
Hilda Wege Jones, 93, of Wallace Street, Scotia, died Sunday at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, after being stricken at home.
She worked was a matron at the Schenectady County Jail and later worked for the the sheriff's department in the 1960s.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Scotia, the White Shrine of Jerusalem; a 75-year member and past worthy matron of the George Hope Chapter of the Eastern Star; a former state officer for the Eastern Star; and a member of the Beukendaal Chapter of the Eastern star. She was a former member of the Scotia Gold and Silver and Senior Citizens of the Fifth Ward of Amsterdam.
She married Louis H. Wege, who died in 1955. She later married John T. Jones. He died in 1977.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Wege of Houston and Russell Wege of Scotia; three daughters, Esther Brinkerhoff of Syracuse, Ada Buyce of Broadalbin, and Barbara Cronan of Florida; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at the White Funeral Home, 264 N. Ballston Ave., Scotia.
Interment will be in Parkview Cemetery, Schenectady.
Calling hours are 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Reformed Church Memorial Fund.

Dorothy Palmer
April 27, 1999
Dorothy A. Palmer, 86, of Vanderveer Street, Amsterdam, died Tuesday at home.
Born June 15, 1912, in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of David L. and Emma Smith DeForest. She was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Mrs. Palmer was employed by Mohawk Carpet Mills and later by Ward Products until retiring.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.
She married Alfred H. Palmer July 4, 1935. He died Aug. 18, 1972.
Survivors include three sons, David Palmer of Jacksonville, Fla., Thomas Palmer of Hurley, and Donald Palmer of Milton, Wash.; a daughter, Janet Donahue of Fargo, N.D.; a sister, Ethel Norton of Vero Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services are 10 a.m. Friday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, with the Rev. Dan Wheeler officiating.
Interment will be in Greenhill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 40 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Joseph Syzdek
April 27, 1999
Joseph J. Syzdek, 81, of Chrisler Avenue, Schenectady, died Tuesday at Ellis Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Amsterdam, Mr. Syzdek was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He lived in Schenectady for 58 years.
For 30 years, he was a machinist in the General Electric Co.'s large steam turbine department, retiring in 1979.
Mr. Syzdek was a communicant of the Church of St. Adalbert.
He was also a member of the GE Quarter Century Club.
Mr. Syzdek married Isabelle Kota Syzdek Sept. 28, 1941.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a brother, Victor Syzdek of Florida; and a sister, Dorothy Syzdek of Florida.
The funeral is 8 a.m. Friday at Light's Funeral Home, 1428 State St., Schenectady, followed at 9 a.m. by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Adalbert.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Adalbert's Restoration Fund.

Ernest Tennant
April 27, 1999
Ernest L. Tennant, 79, of County Route 106, Amsterdam, died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.
Born Dec. 2, 1919, in the Town of Day, he was the son of Roy and Hazel Deming Tennant. He was educated locally and moved to Fort Johnson in 1952. He has lived in Amsterdam since 1962.
He was an oil delivery man for the Morini Coal and Oil Co., retiring in 1985.
Mr. Tennant was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific.
He was a member of St. Lucke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Amsterdam.
Mr. Tennant married Marguerite L. Kraft Feb. 1, 1947.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, the Rev. Thomas W. Tennant of Canajoharie; a daughter, Kathy A. Bever of the Town of Florida; three brothers, Cecil Tennant of Edinburg, Raymond Tennant of Hadley, and Wolfred Tennant of Richmond, Va; a sister, Pearl Colvin of Edinburg; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Friday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Fun-eral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., with his son, the Rev. Thomas W. Tennant, officiating.
Interment is in Fort Plain Cemetery.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam.
