Margaret Hurrey, 79
Ret. Registered Nurse

Margaret “Maggie” Hurrey of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Liberty, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at Sunrise Hospital with her family by her side, following a long illness. She was 79.
The daughter of the late James and Margaret Hurrey, she was born September 9, 1926 in Pittston, Pa.
She was raised in Shamokin, Pa. She raised her family in Liberty and moved to Las Vegas upon her retirement eight years ago. She was a Registered Nurse and began her career at Community General Hospital in Liberty. She later became Director of Nursing and Administration at Walnut Mountain Care Center in Liberty. She was remembered by her patients because of her sense of humor and compassionate care.
In a family statement it was said, “Maggie dedicated her life to caring for her family. They will cherish the memories of summers spent at the Jersey Shore, holidays with Nanny’s famous pies and endless laughter due to her unique way with words.”
She was the mother of Ruth Pfriender of Las Vegas, Nev., Nancy Lomax of Duanesburg, and Dawne Steenrod of Albany; and the grandmother of Jason, Mike and Corey Pfriender of Las Vegas, Nev., Noel, Drew and Colin Lomax of Duanesburg, Lindsay, Adam and Ryan Steenrod of Albany, and Melissa, Kimberly and Scott Pfriender of Fort Myers, Fla. She is also survived by three sons-in-law, Michael Pfriender, Paul Lomax, and Dale Steenrod; and her beloved chihuahua, Baby.
A memorial service was held Friday, March 17 at Palm Mortuary, Las Vegas, Nev.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hoyt Library, 284 Wyoming Avenue, Kingston, PA 18704. Contributions will be for the purpose of purchasing nursing books in memory of Margaret Hurrey, who was a graduate of Nesbitt Hospital School of Nursing.

Helen DuCharme Exum
Fmr. Liberty Res., 93

Helen DuCharme Exum died on the evening of March 22, 2006 in Cathlamet, Washington.
She was born on September 23, 1912 in Wappingers Falls, NY to Eusebie and George DuCharme.
She always said that it was easy to remember her birth year if you remembered the “Titanic.”
In 1929, she began a career with Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corp. where she worked until 1945. She was one of the first women employees of this corporation that performed the job of industrial site layout and blueprinting.
She married William T. Exum on June 6, 1945. They were married for 42 years. He preceded her in death in 1987. They had two children, Patricia and George. Patricia preceded her in death in 1996. The family moved to Liberty, NY in 1956. Liberty is where the family called home until Helen moved to Cathlamet in 1998.
Helen enjoyed needlework, crossword puzzles, literature, art, and lively discussion on politics, history, and current events. Having worked in a library, she looked forward to books and discussion at the Cathlamet Library on Monday mornings. Having lived her life when monumental change happened in our country and the world, she enjoyed viewing current events with the impact of past history.
Survivors are George, her son, and his wife Carol Carver of Cathlamet; she is also survived by granddaughters, Maiya and Sarah Exum of Cathlamet, Wa. and Amy and Danielle Monks of El Paso, Tex; and a great-granddaughter Stormy Monks of El Paso, Tex.
She lived her faith and loved being part of her church community.
A memorial service will be held for her at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Cathlamet on April 5, 2006 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James Family Center, 1134 Columbia St., Cathlamet, WA 98612.

Wendell J. Barnes
Former Bus. Owner, 64

Wendell J. Barnes of Beach Lake, Pa., former owner of Narrowsburg Lumber Co., and lifelong resident of the area, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. He was 64.
The son of the late Marvin J. and Mary Guier Barnes, he was born January 23, 1942 in Honesdale, Pa.
Mr. Barnes was a member of the Tusten Lions Club, a former member of the Tusten Volunteer Fire Co., past president of ENAP, former board member of United National Bank, current board member of the Pike Co. Builders Association, member of Woodlock Springs Golf Club and a past club champion of Cricket Hill Golf Club.
A family statement read, “He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman. In addition to his love of travel, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, ice fishing and working in his rose garden.”
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Betty Cortese Barnes, at home; four children, James Barnes and his wife, Jane, of New Hampshire, John Barnes of Dingsman’s Ferry, Pa., Cathy Barnes of Narrowsburg, and Tracy Chicosky and a foster daughter, Emily Blake, both of Lake Ariel, Pa; two brothers, Howard and his wife, Cindy Sue, of Narrowsburg and Thomas and his wife, Debbie, of Honesdale, Pa.; six grandchildren, Alyssa Barnes, Brittany Barnes, Matthew Barnes, Christopher Doney, Michelle Doney and Jessica Clark; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Friday from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.
Funeral services will be at 10:00a.m. Friday, April 14 at the Beach Lake Free Methodist Church in Beach Lake, Pa. with Rev. James Corbin officiating.
Burial will be made in Beach Lake Cemetery, Beach Lake, Pa.

Alice M. Many
Ret. LPN, 84

Alice M. Many of Liberty, a retired Licensed Practical Nurse and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 7, 2006 at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 84 years of age.
The daughter of Frank and Grace Hall Hamilton, she was born May 28, 1921 in Neversink. She was the widow of Earl Many.
Mrs. Many was a member of the Grooville Free Methodist Church. She loved music and had played the piano in the church for many years. She had been employed at the Sullivan County Infirmary before retiring. She had also been a seamstress and enjoyed crafts.
Survivors include her daughter, Alice Theis of Kingston; three brothers, Charles Hamilton and his wife, Bernice, of Grahamsville, Frank Hamilton and his wife, Jane, of Plattsburgh and Lake Worth, Fla., and Clinton Hamilton and his wife, Emiko. of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Cora Greene of Liberty; an adopted granddaughter, Karen Many of Yonkers; nieces, nephews and cousins, including Betty Jane McNamara of Napanoch and Kathryn Hamilton of Walden.
Funeral services will be private. Rev. Robert W. Hoag will officiate.
Burial will be made in the Rural Cemetery, Grahamsville.
Arrangements are by the Harris Funeral Home, Liberty.

Elizabeth E. Backer
Ret. Bookkeeper, 83

Elizabeth E. “Betty” Backer of Monticello died Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 83.
The daughter of August and Willow Steele Lange, she was born September 28, 1922 in Liberty.
She was a bookkeeper for Landfield Garage in Monticello, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a volunteer for 15 years at the former Walnut Mountain Care Center in Liberty.
She is survived by her husband, William T. “Sonny” Backer, at home; a son, Keith Backer of Poughkeepsie; a daughter, Lorri Logan and her husband, Paul, of Ellenville; two grandchildren, Caitlin and Erin Logan of Ellenville; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Edson Lange and a sister, Lois Lange Kuck.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 14 at Ramsay’s Funeral Home, 55 St. John Street, Monticello with Rev. Gene Smith officiating. Burial will be in Rock Ridge Cemetery, Monticello.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of the Hudson Valley, 35 Orchard Street, White Plains, NY 10603-3397.

Vera Huber
Homemaker, 83

Vera Huber of Shandalee, a homemaker and an area resident for over sixty years, died Friday, April 7, 2006 in Boynton Beach, FL. She was 83.
The daughter of the late Henry and Karoline Hyll Muller, she was born October 7, 1922 in New York City.
Vera moved to Shandalee in 1945 after marrying Charles Huber. There they owned and operated the family farm and established a boarding house. Established in 1864 by Nicholas and Elizabeth Fries, the farm was later sold to their daughter, Anna Fries and her husband, Balthasar Huber, thence to Charles and Vera. She continued operating the boarding house after her husband’s passing with assistance from her children.
Survivors include three sons, Henry C. Huber of New York City, Carl T. Huber of Shandalee and John E. Huber and his wife, Janet of CA; a daughter, Carol A. Huber of Shandalee; a brother, Frank Muller of Kenoza Lake; two grandsons, Rick Huber of Liberty and Jay Huber and his wife, Erin of UT; and three great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 15 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Ave., Roscoe.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Paul Hagedorn will officiate.
Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery in Roscoe.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Livingston Manor Vol. Ambulance Corp. or the American Cancer Society.

Hailey Nicole Mack
Infant

Hailey Nicole Mack, infant daughter of Kevin T. Mack and Amy L. Winter, died Friday, April 7, 2006 at O.R.M.C. Horton Campus. Hailey was born February 11, 2006 in Suffern.
A family statement read, "During her short stay, she brought so much joy to us and our entire family."
She is survived by her loving parents; one sister, Krysten Mack at home; maternal grandparents, Robert Winter of Middletown, Janet Winter of Ellenville; paternal grandparents, Bradley Mack of Newburgh, Marianne Mack of Wurtsboro; two aunts, Tina Misla and her husband, Luis, and Jennifer Mack of Middletown; two uncles, James Winter of Middletown, and Bradley Mack of Bloomingburg; two cousins, Arianna and Tyler; maternal great grandparent, Marion Earney; and paternal great grandparents, Helen and Frank Henion and Donald and Eleanor Mack.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, April 12 at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, Middletown.
Burial was made in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.

Doris A. Russo
Ret. Secretary, 79

Doris A. Russo of Lava, a retired secretary at Hamburg Savings Bank, and a longtime resident of the area, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was 79.
The daughter of the late Henry and Anna Schrimpf Amend, she was born November 7, 1926 in Brooklyn.
She was a former member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Brooklyn, attended Beach Lake United Methodist Church, Beach Lake, Pa., and was a member of the Lava Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Joseph, at home; two sons, Gregg Russo and his wife, Lisa, of Atlanta, Ga. and Richard Russo and his wife, Marie, of Sheldon, Ct.; a sister, Adele Amend of Narrowsburg; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Lauren Russo.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at the Beach Lake United Methodist Church, Beach Lake, Pa. with Rev. Dr. Gordon Weightman officiating.
Interment will be made at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 24 in Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg.
Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.
