Frank A. ‘Al’ Tonjes
Dairy Farmer, 71

Frank Alvin "Al" Tonjes of Callicoon, a dairy farmer and longtime area resident, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Frank and Alvina Mueller Tonjes, he was born November 20, 1928, in Nanuet.
Mr. Tonjes is survived by his wife, Cathleen Cullen Tonjes, at home; four daughters, Mary Theodoro of Glen Ridge, N.J., Doyle Degan of Goshen, Susan Nicoletti of Cochecton and Josephine Lowe of Circleville; four sons, Christopher Tonjes of San Mateo, Calif., Mark Tonjes of Atlanta, Ga., Timothy Tonjes of Callicoon and Peter Tonjes of Cambridge; a sister, Marge Maquadt of Westwood, N.J.; a brother, Robert Tonjes of North Carolina; 27 grandchildren; and 13 nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Stwart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. George's R.C. Church in Jeffersonville on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Nee officiating.
Burial will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jeffersonville First Aid Corps, Jeffersonville, N.Y. 12748.

Gertrude C. Eckes
Homemaker, 88

Gertrude C. Eckes of Narrowsburg, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late Adolph and Catherine Andersen Scheidel, she was born January 1, 1912, in Honesdale, Pa. She was the widow of Sylvester Eckes who died in 1987.
In a family statement, it was said, "Gertrude liked to entertain and play pinochle and she always supported local organizations."
She is survived by four nephews and their spouses, Donald Eckes, Wilbur and Carol Eckes, Edward and Helen Eckes, all of Sparrowbush, and Alfred Eckes of Athens, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Virginia Eckes of Harrissonburg, Va.; and several cousins.
Friends may call at the Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Phyllis Haynes officiating.
Burial will be made in Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lava Fire Department, or the Tusten Volunteer Ambulance, both at Narrowsburg, N.Y. 12764.

Mary E. Manzi
Silk Screen Printer, 77

April 18, 2000 -- Mary E. Manzi of Hialeah, Fla., a former resident of Mongaup Valley, a silk screen printer and a homemaker, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at the Hialeah Hospital. She was 77 years of age.
The daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Murtaugh Seaman, she was born April 22, 1922, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Leo J. Manzi who died December 25, 1994.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rose and John Bogaert of White Lake; two grandchildren, Christine Maas of Neversink and John Bogaert of Natick, Mass.; several nieces and nephews, including Edward Geski, and his wife, Maureen, of Tallahassee, Fla. She was predeceased by her twin sister, Elizabeth Martin, and an older sister, Eleanor Geski.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at the White Lake Reformed Presbyterian Church, Route 17B, Bethel at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Coon officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Sullivan County, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550, or to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Kauneonga Lake.

Marion A. Durkin, 81
Ret. Cafeteria Worker

Marion A. Cross Durkin of Monticello and Orlando, Fla., died in Orlando on April 12, 2000, after a long battle with heart and lung disease. She was 81 years of age.
The daughter of the late James Hiram and Anna Marie Cross, she was born July 26, 1918, in Monticello.
A lifelong resident of Monticello, she graduated from Monticello High School in 1939. She was a longtime employee of the Monticello School District cafeteria. Mrs. Durkin was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Monticello. She spent her winters in Florida.
In a family statement, it was said, "She will be greatly missed by family and friends as she was kind, warm and loving to everyone she ever met."
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, John "Jack" Durkin of Monticello and Orlando, Fla.; a son, John Durkin of Oakland, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Terry and George Kinch of Monticello; four grandchildren, Richard Durkin of Kokomo, Ind., John Durkin of Palo Alto, Calif., Janeen Durkin of Park Ridge, N.J., and Nancy Hensley of Reading, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Richard Durkin, in 1979 and a brother, Stephen Cross in 1996.
A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date at St. John's Cemetery in Monticello with the Rev. Ninon Hutchinson named to officiate.

Stephen D. Solomon
Ret. Teacher, 61

Stephen D. Solomon of Woodbourne, a retired elementary school teacher with over 25 years of service at the Benjamin Cosor School in Fallsburg and a 40-year area resident, died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. He was 61 years of age.
The son of Helen Fefferblum Solomon and the late Abraham Solomon, he was born February 22, 1939, in Brooklyn. He was the widower of Nancy Karkota Solomon.
Mr. Solomon was a member of the Town of Fallsburg Golf Club, the Tuesday Night Golf League at Lochmor Golf Course; a member of the Fallsburg Teachers Association and editor of the Small Fry Flash.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Darcy and Lester Halper of Dix Hills; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Gina Solomon of Orange, Conn; a sister and brother-in-law, Judith and Raymond Gold of South Fallsburg; his mother of Liberty; his mother-in-law, Frances Karkota of Woodbourne; two grandchildren, Emily and Kayla Halper; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello with Rabbi Irwin Tanenbaum officiating.
Interment was made in the Temple Sholom Cemetery in Monticello.

Maynie ÎHelenâ Cobun
Homemaker, 92

Maynie "Helen" Cobun of Mountaindale, a homemaker, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at the Middletown Park Manor. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Georgia Lewis Spencer, she was born October 7, 1907, in West Virginia. She was the widow of Arthur Dale Cobun who died in February 1990.
Mrs. Cobun is survived by two daughters, Georgia Iu of Mountaindale and Vera Cobun of New Jersey; a son, Arthur Cobun Jr. of the state of Washington; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Rosedale Funeral Home, 245-01 Francis Lewis Blvd., Queens, on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
Interment will be made in Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale.

Sarah K. Hasbrouck, 89
Ret. Newspaper Woman

Sarah Knight Hasbrouck of Grahamsville, a lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 14, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 89 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Grace Slater Knight, she was born May 6, 1910. She was the widow of Theron W. Hasbrouck.
Mr. and Mrs. Hasbrouck were instrumental in the organization and early production of Grahamsville's newspaper, The Townsman, which was printed for many years in the garage of the Hasbrouck home. He ran the printer and she wrote the Grahamsville news column. Mrs. Hasbrouck was also the Grahamsville correspondent for the Liberty Register, the Monticello Republican Watchman and the Ellenville Journal.
She dedicated much of her life to her family and friends. She took great pride in her family and was a source of great pride for them. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a constant joy to her.
Assuming a pastime begun by her mother many years earlier, Mrs. Hasbrouck recorded and maintained a vast record of vital statistics of local residents for more than 40 years, many dating back to the mid-1800s.
She was a longtime member of the Claryville Reformed Church and a member of the Claryville Quilters. For many years she made quilts and other handsewn items to give as gifts to her family and friends.
Mrs. Hasbrouck is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas C. and Marilyn Hasbrouck of Glenmont; a daughter and son-in-law, June C. and Thomas Smith of Grahamsville; seven grandchildren, Laurie Mortensen and Janet Rathjens, both of Delmar, Kristine Strada of South Berwick, Me., Kurt Hasbrouck of Wynantskill, Wendy Hyndman of Colorado Springs, Colo., Scott T. Smith of Grahamsville and Matthew Smith of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to join her family in a gathering to celebrate her life on her birthdate, Saturday, May 6, at 11 a.m., in the Claryville Reformed Church. A luncheon will follow at the church hall.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.

John F. Armand
Ret. Contractor, 79

John F. Armand of Highland Lake, a contractor and longtime area resident, died Thursday, April 13, 2000, in Macungie, Pa. He was 79 years of age.
The son of the late Francis M. and Edna Colligan Armand, he was born December 3, 1920, in New York City. He was the widower of Regina M. Lynch Armand who died July 28, 1993.
Mr. Armand was president of the John F. Armand Construction Company in New York City. He was a member of St. Ann's R.C. Church in Shohola, Pa., and the Lackawaxen Mission Men's Club of the church; a member of the Highland Lake Fire Department and past president of the Lake Devenoge Property Owners Association.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Ann and Peter Schmidt of Montreal, Canada, and Jeanne-Marie and Nicholas Maiale of Emmaus, Pa.; and six grandchildren, Lisa, Anne and Christina Maiale and Matthew, Megan and William Schmidt.
Friends may call at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home, Route 97, Barryville, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's R.C. Church in Shohola, Pa., with the Rev. Michael Quinnan officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Eldred.
