Chester R. Kanin
Painter, 80

Chester R. Kanin of Monticello, a painter and longtime area resident, died Saturday, September 23, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 80 years of age.
The son of the late Stanley and Ida Perkala Kanin, he was born August 20, 1920, in Scranton, Pa. He was the widower of Helen C. Kanin.
He is survived by a brother, Emil K. Kanin of Mount Holly, N.J.; and several nephews.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Newburgh.
Graveside services and burial of the cremains will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Cemetery in Monticello.
Funeral arrangements were made by the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.

Jeremy M. Lewis
Infant, 20 Days

Jeremy M. Lewis, the 20-day-old son of Christina Sweatt of Liberty and Branden M. Lewis Sr. of White Sulphur Springs, and twin brother of Branden M. Lewis Jr., died Friday, September 29, 2000.
He was born September 9, 2000, in Harris.
Jeremy is also survived by his grandparents, Teresa Connolly, Joan McGurrin and Theodore Lewis; great-grandparents, aunts, including Mallory Connolly and Danielle Lewis, grand-aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were private.

Howard L. Osterhout
Ret. Businessman, 74

Howard L. Osterhout of Loch Sheldrake, the retired owner of Osterhout Excavation, died Monday, October 2, 2000, at his home. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Eugene W. and Alva Krum Osterhout, he was born Octrober 26, 1926, in Bittersweet.
A U. S. Army veteran of World War II, with service in the Phillipines, Mr. Osterhout was a life member of the Loch Sheldrake Fire Department and a former member of the Loch Sheldrake and Hurleyville Rod and Gun Club.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was a very sweet, loving man. He will be greatly missed by all whom he loved."
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dorothy Osterhout, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Paula Osterhout and Earl and Suellen Osterhout, all of Loch Sheldrake; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Mike Ward of Loch Sheldrake and Marlene and C. Alton "Al" Dauch of Greensburg, Kty.; a sister, Amy Garber of Bradley; four grandchildren, Timothy and Casey Ward and Samantha and Brittney Osterhout; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Pauline Osterhout; three sisters, Florence Conklin, Marguerite Hotchkin and Dorothy Slater; and two brothers, Eugene and Vernon Osterhout.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.
Interment was made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Loch Sheldrake Fire Department, P.O. Box 1005, Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. 12759 or to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550.

Gerald E. Bair
Welder, 42

Gerald E. Bair of Thompsonville, a welder and lifelong area resident, died Sunday, October 1, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 42 years of age.
The son of Myrtle L. Brumbaugh Bair and the late Francis C. Bair Sr., he was born May 27, 1958, in Newburgh.
Mr. Bair attended Goshen High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1975. He was a big fan of NASCAR and auto racing.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Jorewicz Bair and a son, Christopher J. Bair, both at home; his mother of Goshen; a brother, Francis C. Bair Jr. of Youngsville; two sisters, Pamella Bair-Godfrey of Goshen and Alice Nuzzolese and her husband, Michael, of Goshen; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, William J. Bair.
Services were held Thursday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello with the Rev. Robert Pinto officiating.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Burial of the cremains will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 35 Orchard St., White Plains, N.Y. 10603.

Ethel F. Misner
Ret. SCCC Sec., 71

Ethel F. Misner of Neversink, a retired faculty secretary at Sullivan County Community College, died Monday, October 2, 2000, at the home of her sister. She was 71 years of age.
The daughter of the late Charles C. and Addie Wright Smith, she was born May 6, 1929, in Monticello.
Mrs. Misner was a member of Revonah-Lincoln Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in Liberty.
In a family statement, it was said, "Ethel will be sadly missed by all who knew her for she was a great person who loved all and had a very special place in her heart for animals."
She is survived by two sisters, Emily Bernhey of Landing, N.J., and her twin sister, Edith S. Porter of Hurleyville; two brothers, Alton Smith of Scranton, Pa., and Lewis B. Smith of Monticello; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Rev. Arthur Judson Smith and Roy C. Smith.
A memorial service was held Thursday at the Hurleyville Methodist Church with the Rev. Doris Tietjen officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Dr. Wachter, Old Route 17, Ferndale, N.Y. 12734.

Mathilde Gerber
Retired Baker, 91

Mathilde "Tillie" Gerber of Smallwood, a 45-year area resident and a winter resident of Jensen Beach, Fla., died Monday, October 2, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 91 years of age.
The daughter of the late August and Margaret Steinbach Baumgratz, she was born April 20, 1909, in Mannheim, Germany. She was the widow of George Gerber who died August 14, 1999, after 69 years of marriage.
She came to the U.S. in 1928 where she met and married her husband in 1930. Together they owned Gerber's Bakery in Cambria Heights for many years until they retired and moved to Sullivan County.
Mrs. Gerber was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Liberty; the Bethel Republican Club; AARP; Ladies Auxiliary of the Smallwood-Mongaup Valley Fire Department and was a volunteer at Hamilton Avenue Hospital for many years.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Joseph Serba of Jensen Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Lynne Dunmire of Elkins, W.Va., and Joseph Serba Jr. of East Meadow; and a great-granddaughter, Lacey Dunmire.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 3534 Route 55, Kauneonga Lake, with the Rev. Audrey Pedersen officiating.
Burial will be made in the Evergreen Cemetery, Route 17B, Bethel.

Irene F. Stephens
Homemaker, 69

Irene F. Stephens of Yeagerville, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, October 2, 2000, at the Ellenville Community Hospital. She was 69 years of age.
The daughter of the late Albert and Helen VanDermark Elliott, she was born April 5, 1931, in Middletown.
Mrs. Stephens was a member of North Congregational Church in Middletown and was the Drum Corps mother for the William Deakin American Legion Post #158 Drum and Bugle Corps in Walden.
She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Stephens Sr., at home; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert J. Jr. and Lynn Stephens of Walden, Stephen and Linda Stephens and David and Lori Stephens, all of Accord, Timothy Stephens of Yeagerville and Daniel Stephens of Ellenville; a daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Andre Hamon of Petaluma, Calif.; three brothers, James Elliott of Bloomingburg and Albert Elliott and Richard Elliott, both of Middletown; two sisters, Ann Spath of Florida and Margaret Knauff of Middletown; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation was private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ellenville First Aid Squad, Webster St., Ellenville, N.Y. 12428.

Nancy L. B. Wisher
Career Coordinator, 48

Nancy L. Broas Wisher of Monticello, an Employment and Training Coordinator of Career Development for Sullivan County, a seven-year Monticello resident and former lifelong resident of Middletown, died Tuesday, October 17, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 48 years of age.
The daughter of Bernice Weaver Broas and the late William H. Broas, she was born December 16, 1951, in Middletown.
Mrs. Wisher was a member of First Congregational Church in Middletown; the Teamsters Local #445 in Newburgh and a volunteer for Literacy Volunteers of America.
She is survived by her mother of Middletown; her husband, Dennis Wisher of Mount Vernon; a son, Scott E. Wisher of Mount Vernon; a daughter, Noelle Robinson of Monticello; a brother and sister-in-law, William H. III and Barbara Broas of Slate Hill; a sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne and Robert Mance of Pine Bush; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday at the Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home in Middletown with the Rev. Kevin Leach officiating.
Interment was made in the Wallkill Cemetery in Phillipsburg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Literacy Volunteers of America, 33 Lakewood Ave., Monticello, N.Y. 12701.

Domenica M. Renna
Ret. Med. Secy., 87

Domenica Montello Renna of Monticello, a retired medical secretary for the Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, died Thursday, October 19, 2000, at her home. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late Dominick and Anna Ribolono Bisignano, she was born July 20, 1913, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Jack Montello.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Lynn Montello of Staten Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth (Accomando) and George Gavaris of Monticello; a brother, John Bisignano of Staten Island; two sisters, Terry Costello of the state of Florida and Mary Mattero of Brooklyn; 13 grandchildren, Salvatore and Deborah Accomando, Jacqueline and Mike Dabbraccio and Elizabeth and Anthony Martinez, all of Monticello, Paul and Ann Accomando of Rock Hill, Jack and Deena Montello of New York City, Nicky Lynn Montello of Staten Island and Nicky and Diane Montello of Long Island; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday at St. Peter's R.C. Church in Monticello.
Burial was made in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn.
Funeral arrangements were made by the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.
