Laura Spiro

Laura Spiro, beloved wife and mother, former nursery school teacher and charter member of the Catskills Arts Society, died Sunday, October 10, 2004. She was 81.
Born February 10, 1923 to Herman Chester and Anne Rivkin Chester, Laura grew up in Woodbourne and Brooklyn as part of a large, loving extended family.
She was a nursery school teacher at The Tiny Tots Nursery School of Sullivan County where she taught for the next 20 plus years. She ended her career teaching the children of her first students. This was one of her greatest joys.
She had a lifelong gift for the arts both teaching and working in a variety of media including enamel, fabric, soft sculpture, and mixed media. Encouraged by noted art educator, Charles Beck, she joined him and others to create the Catskills Arts Society.
She will be remembered as a quintessential "people person" who used her gifts to help other cancer survivors understand and cope with their feelings and emotions. She, also, used these selfsame gifts to enrich the lives of those who came even in casual contact with her. If anything, surviving cancer in the early '60s gave her an appreciation and a zest for life that showed through in everything she did. She was blessed with friends whom she honored and loved as if they were family, and in truth they were.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Spiro, her sister Joan Lefkowitz and her children, Elizabeth Spiro of Binghamton, Chet Spiro of Schenectady, Walter Spiro of Albany and David Spiro of Boulder, CO, grandchildren, Adam Law- rence, Kara Spiro, Trystram Spiro-Costello, Anna Wilson-Spiro, Koren Spiro, Luke Wilson-Spiro and Max Spiro and great-grandchild Samuel Kramnick.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 13, 2004.
The family requests that anyone wanting to honor her life make donations in her name to the Catskill Art Society of Hurleyville, NY 12747 rather than send flowers.
