Floyd Raymond Derby
Died: Monday, December 29, 2003
Age: 92

ATHENS - Floyd Raymond Derby, 92, of Athens, died early Monday afternoon at Holzer Medical Center in Jackson.

Born Jan. 28, 1911, in Freeport, Ill., he was the son of the late George and Sybilla Bender Derby. He was formerly employed as a draftsman with Beloit Corp. A graduate of Freeport High School, he was an avid track runner and football player in high school. He was also an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and gardener and volunteered at Beloit Memorial Hospital in Beloit, Wis., for many years.

He is survived by a daughter, Marsha (Allyn) Reilly of Athens; granddaughters, Caitlin Reilly-Schave of Austin, Texas, Megan Reilly of New Orleans, La., and Carolyn Reilly of Oak Ridge, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita, in 1999; and a sister, Yvonne Hoak.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Episcopal Church of Good Shepherd conducted by Fr. Michael Jupin. Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to National Audubon Society, 700 Broadway, New York, NY 10003 or www.audubon.org.

Robert Walter Carney
Died: Monday, December 29, 2003
Age: 50

ATHENS - Robert Walter Carney, 50, of Athens, died early Monday morning, Dec. 29, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.

Born in Takoma, Md., on July 5, 1953, he was the son of Grace Virginia Wilson Florio of Cuyahoga Falls and the late William Dale Carney. He was a 1971 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School and was employed in food service.

He is survived by a daughter, Jessica Marie Carney of New York City, N.Y.; a son, Max Wilson Carney of Stewart; sisters, Kathleen Goga of Kernersville, N.C., and Colleen Davis of Chandler, Ariz.; a brother, Michael Florio of Cuyahoga Falls; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Michael Florio.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, conducted by Fr. Michael Jupin. Burial of cremains will be in Stewart Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.

James E. Martin
Died: Sunday, December 28, 2003
Age: 60

ATHENS - James E. Martin, 60, of New London, Conn., died at his home Sunday morning, Dec. 28, 2003, after a long illness.

He was born April 23, 1943, in Athens, son of the late Myron and Mildred Christy Martin.

Until recently, Mr. Martin was a sonar transducer designer at the Kildare Corp. in New London. Prior to that, he worked for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, McLaughlin Research Corp. and Analysis and Technology, all in New London.

He is survived by a son, Scott Martin of St. Louis, Miss.; a daughter, Ann Piper of Roswell, N.M.; and a companion, Christina Stilphen of New London.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Fulton-Theroux Funeral Service of New London is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the donor’s favorite charity or to the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006.

Virginia Evelyn Likens Hollon
Died: Sunday, December 28, 2003
Age: 69

ALBANY - Virginia Evelyn Likens Hollon, 69, of Columbus, went to meet her lost loved ones on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003.

Virginia was a long-time resident of Albany before moving to Columbus. Born Nov. 6, 1934, in Gallia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Margarett Likens. In 1952, Virginia married the late Delmar Hollon. Her parents, her husband, her eldest son Thomas, her sister Margarett and seven brothers and numerous friends preceded Virginia in death.

Virginia attended both Rutland and Chester High Schools. After four children, she began a career in health care in 1964 at Athens Mental Health Center. Virginia’s health care career spanned 39 years. During those 39 years, Virginia obtained five college degrees with the highest being a Ph.D., while being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Before Virginia began her health care career, she helped operate a family farm. Virginia’s proudest professional accomplishments were: Her 10-plus years of volunteer services to the MAAD organization, in which she held a board position with the Columbus chapter, her volunteer service to the Rainbow Connection, being one of the original organizers of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Ohio and being one of the original organizers of the SEIU-1199, Columbus Chapter.

Virginia has three surviving children, Ron Hollon of Albany, Ann and husband Thomas Nicholson of Newcomerstown, and William of Columbus; eight grandchildren, Wayne and Lana Hollon, John and Dawn Deputy, Thomas and Jacinda Nicholson Jr., Amy Nicholson, Jerrod Hollon, Shawn Hollon, Sabrina and Brian Ennis, and Wesley Hollon; eight great-grandchildren and three brothers.

Services will be Saturday, 2 p.m., in Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, with the Rev. Edward Brown officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and two hours prior to services.

The family will receive friends after graveside services at Alexander Presbyterian Church, in the dining area, to celebrate Virginia’s life rather than her passing. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted. All who knew this lovely person will sadly miss her.

Carmoleta Eldora Cagg Walton
Died: Sunday, December 28, 2003
Age: 94

NELSONVILLE - Carmoleta Eldora Cagg Walton, 13566 Kimberly Road, Nelsonville, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains. Born in Nelsonville on Oct. 16, 1909, she was 94 years, two months and 12 days old.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Edward and Elizabeth Ann Gilpin Cagg; brothers, Charles, Arthur and Edward Cagg; husband, George E. Walton Sr.; and a son, George E. Walton Jr.

She is survived by daughters, Jean Catherine Walton Sharp of Nelsonville; Jo Ellen Walton Fitzwater of Glenville, W.Va.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Walton willed her body to the basic sciences department at Ohio University in Athens. There will be no funeral service at this time, but a private memorial service is being planned for a later date.

Leland Maurice Turner
Died: Sunday, December 28, 2003
Age: 81

ALBANY - Leland Maurice Turner, 4930 Washington Road, Albany, passed away after an extended illness on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003. He was 81 years old.

Mr. Turner was born on April 10, 1922, in Dyesville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Winnifred Castor Turner; two half brothers, Wayne and Dale Caster; 12 uncles; and his beloved wife of many years, Bertine Ervin Turner, who passed away in 1983.

He is survived by a daughter, Karen Turner; two sisters, Myrtle (Les) Canode and Marcella (Ray) Ash; an uncle, Warren G. Turner; aunts, and several nieces and nephews, among others.

Mr. Turner worked at Athens Mental Health Center for almost 45 years as a nurse, caregiver and supervisor. In his younger days, he enjoyed motorcycling, gardening, collecting and socializing with family and friends. He was a kind and gentle man who will be missed by his family and those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Funeral arrangements are by Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home in Albany. A short memorial service will be held at the funeral home Wednesday, at 1 p.m. A visiting hour will occur immediately preceding the funeral service. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.

Charlotte V. Mitchell
Died: Sunday, December 28, 2003
Age: 79

MURRAY CITY - Charlotte V. “Sue” Mitchell, 79, of Murray City, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Pine Hills Continuing Care Center, Nelsonville.

Born Dec. 31, 1923, in Murray City, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Bernice M. Wright Spencer. She was a homemaker, a 1941 graduate of Murray City High School, a member of Murray City United Methodist Church and Murray City Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Walter Mitchell; sons, Michael (Sandy) Mitchell of Carroll, Dennis (Shirley) Mitchell of Wilmington, Jan (Jennifer) Mitchell of Lancaster, Steve (Janet) Mitchell of Nelsonville, Jeff Mitchell and Terri Jones of Shade, Rich (Heather) Mitchell of Murray City and Doug (Carmen) Mitchell of Bishopville; a daughter, Marsha (David) King of Baltimore; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ann Spencer of Murray City.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Robert and Curtiss L. Spencer.

Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Murray City United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Ernie Perkins and Michael Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Friends may call at Warren-Brown Funeral Home in Nelsonville today from 2 to 9 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service.

Kevin D. Thoma
Died: Saturday, December 27, 2003
Age: 36

RUTLAND - Kevin D. Thoma, 36, of Rutland, passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, near Pomeroy.

Born Aug. 5, 1967, in Pomeroy, he was the son of Guy and Ellen Thoma.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Thoma is survived by two children, Tesia and Alex.

Services will be today, 2 p.m., at Birchfield Funeral Home in Rutland. Burial will be in Carlton Cemetery in Pomeroy.

Patricia Coey Arnett
Died: Thursday, December 25, 2003

GLOUSTER - Patricia Coey Arnett, formerly of Glouster, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, in Georgia as a result of cancer.

She was born June 10, 1943 in Glouster to Willard and Juanita Coey.

She is survived by her husband, William Arnett; her children, James Shifflet Jr., Warren Irwin Jr. and Vivian (Penny) Kaschak; her mother, Juanita Pierce Coey; siblings, Wavelene Snyder, Jean Coey, John Coey and Linda (Joe) Spaulding; and 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial was held Monday by The Creation Society of the South in Smyrna, Ga. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations in her memory be made to the American Cancer Society, 1825 Barrett Lake Blvd., Suite 280, Kennesaw, GA 30144. Or call 1-800-227-2345. An account has been set up and the American Cancer Society will mail cards to the family.
