Samuel Elliott
Died: Monday, June 24, 2002

MARIETTA -- Samuel B. Elliott, 70, of 534 Fifth St., Marietta, died at 7:29 p.m. on Monday, June 24, 2002, at Camden-Clark Hospital in Parkersburg, W.Va., after an extended illness.

Born June 17, 1932, in Morgan County, he was the son of the late Walter J. and Eva Shilling Elliott. Mr. Elliott was a bridge superintendent and currently vice president of Precon Bridge Co. of Marietta. He was a graduate of M-M High School, and Ohio University as a civil engineer. He was a former member of Corinthian Lodge of McConnelsville and was a member of Sons of the American Legion. Mr. Elliott was a bridge builder his entire life.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Marge McMillen Elliott; two daughters and sons-in-law, Constance and Jim Bebout of Stockport, and Kristi and David Schefflar of Lancaster; three stepdaughters and a stepson-in-law, Barbara and Don Pendleton of Gahanna, Kathy Townsend of Baltimore, Md., and Harriett Wilson of Coshocton; a son, Sam and Barbara Elliott of McConnelsville; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William J. Elliott.

Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Miller-Huck Funeral Home, 62 S. 7th St., McConnelsville, with his son, Sam Elliott officiating. Burial will be in McConnelsville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Robert Roland Pierce
Died: Friday, June 21, 2002

NELSONVILLE -- Robert Roland Pierce, 56, of Nelsonville, passed away Friday, June 21, 2002 at the Ohio State University Medical Center.

He was born May 9, 1946, the son of Marjorie (Tom) Blair Pierce Riley of Nelsonville, and the late James Wesley Pierce. He was married to Margie Shuler Pierce of Nelsonville.

He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran; a member of the VFW Post 3467, Nelsonville, where he served as an officer for 30 years, post commander three times, and was on the District 12 staff. He was also a former Nelsonville volunteer fireman, and former general chairman and parade chairman for the Parade of the Hills Committee. He worked for AEP for 33 years.

He is also survived by a son, Wesley (Noelle Polley) Pierce of Nelsonville; a daughter, Bobbi Jo (Jesse Edwards) Pierce of Nelsonville; a brother, Jimmie (Billie Ann) Pierce of Ft. Pierce, Florida; two sisters, Marjorie (Steve) Mowery of Logan, and Lori Pierce and Anita Mondo of Nelsonville; mother and father-in-law, Mary and Ernest Shuler of Letart Falls; 15 nieces and nephews; and many caring friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with the Rev. Gary Carlson officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, where a military graveside service will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.

Friends may call on Monday, June 24, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Julia Potts
Died: Friday, June 21, 2002

NELSONVILLE -- Julia Anne Potts, 72, of Nelsonville, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus after suffering a heart attack at her home Thursday night.

Born on Nov. 9, 1929, in Columbus, she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Frieda Jones Slingluff. She was a graduate of Jackson High School and Ohio University in Athens, where she majored in music. Mrs. Potts retired, after more than 30 years of employment, from the Goodyear Plant in Logan. She was a member of the Logan Women of the Moose Lodge Chapter 997 since 1997. She was a life member of the Audubon Society and the Humane Society of the United States. She was also a member of the Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Laroy and Brenda McClain Potts of Madison, Ind.; a daughter and her special friend, Leeanna Joe Potts of The Plains and Vic Kallay of Athens; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Jerry (Doris) Matheny of Stockport and Mrs. Bill (Pat) James of Guysville; several cousins, including Mrs. Don (Bartha Jo Joie) Adams and her family, Bill, April and Brandon of Orlando, Fla., Susan Jones Oblinger and her family of Washington state, and Jim and Angie Jones of Colorado; and a special aunt, Sally Potts Gabriel of The Plains. She is also survived by a special friend, Corey Blackburn of Logan, whom she treated as a grandson, and by her loving dachshund, Sugar.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Kenneth Leroy Potts, who died May 18, 1998; an infant daughter; an infant son; a sister-in-law, Carol Petericonis; and her uncle and aunt, Kenneth and Verna Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. David L. Cogar officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Friends may call on Monday, June 24, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday, June 25, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial services will be conducted by the Women of the Moose Lodge of Logan at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Kathleen Roush
Died: Friday, June 21, 2002

LOGAN -- Kathleen M. Roush, 68, of Logan, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan.

Born May 4, 1934, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Jacob A. and Goldie Jordan Patterson. She was the widow of Curtis Roush.

Funeral services are Wednesday at 1 p.m. at First Christ Union Church in Henderson, W.Va. Burial will be in the Henderson Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan.

Ralph Gwilym
Died: Thursday, June 20, 2002

GLOUSTER -- Ralph H. Gwilym, 81, of Glouster, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at his residence.

Born May 28, 1921, in Glouster, he was the son of the late William and Elizabeth Stevens Gwilym. He was a teamster truck driver for A&P for 25 years and a member of Redtown Free Methodist Church.

He is survived by a son, Ralph Dana Gwilym of Brownsville; a stepson, William Wade of Ohio; a daughter, Jeanne Sylvester of Columbus; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; a nephew, Walter Gwilym of Rushville; and a niece, Marylin Gwilym of Jacksonville.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosezina C. Cripper Gwilym, who passed away on Dec. 30, 1993; twin infants; a stepdaughter, Jane Higginbotham; and five brothers.

Services will be held Sunday, 1 p.m., at Redtown Free Methodist Church, with the Revs. James Brown and Harry Thorton officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Hocking County.

Friends may call at Brown Funeral Home in Murray City today from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.; and at the church on Sunday one hour prior to services.

Vaughn Huffman
Died: Thursday, June 20, 2002

WELLSTON -- Vaughn H. Huffman, 73, of Wellston, died today, Thursday, June 20, 2002, at his home.

Born March 19, 1929, in Hamden, he was the son of the late Wayne and Inez Newman Huffman.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta Gettles Huffman; a daughter, Jill Kemp; and sons Jack Huffman and John Bethel.

Arrangements will be announced by Jenkins Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, Wellston.

Alma Wyskiver
Died: Thursday, June 20, 2002

UNION FURNACE -- Alma J. Wyskiver, 88, of Union Furnace, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital in Logan.

Born Sept. 24, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Bessie Clark Largent. She was valedictorian of the Starr Washington High School Class of 1933, was employed as secretary and treasurer of Union Furnace School District, and retired from Logan Hocking School District. She was a member of Union Furnace United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald "Buck" and Patricia Edgar of Logan; daughters and sons-in-law Phyllis and Leroy Danison of Maxville, Charlotte and Lynn Roberts of Logan, and Janice and Edward Zimmerman of Mount Pleasant; a son-in-law, Jack Ingram of Logan; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Myers of Avon Lake; a brother, Patrick Largent of McArthur; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Largent of New Plymouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold H. Wyskiver, who passed away on July 3, 1983; a daughter, Betty Lou Ingram, who passed away on Feb. 10, 2000; a grandson, Charles "Chuck" Zimmerman; and a brother, James Largent. She was also was preceded in death by Charles Edgar.

Services will be held Monday, 1 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home in Logan. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, from 7 to 9 p.m.; and on Sunday, after 10 a.m., with the family in attendance from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

William Addington
Died: Wednesday, June 19, 2002

ATHENS -- William "Bill" Addington, 56, of Higley, Ariz., died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Valley Lutheran Hospital, Mesa, Ariz., after a brief illness.

Born Dec. 30, 1945, in Athens, he was the son of the late Dennis E. and Betty Ann Johnson Addington. He was a 1964 graduate of Athens High School; retired from Delta Airlines after 30 years of service in Columbus, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Salt Lake City, Utah; and was a member of Trimble Lodge 557 F&AM.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca "Becky" Jenkins Addington; a daughter, Tammy (Michael) Soelberg of Higley; a grandson, Cody Soelberg of Higley; nephews Jack Addington of Columbus and Eric (Jan) Addington of Connecticut; great-nieces Erika and Cassie Addington of Columbus; a sister- and brother-in-law, Mary Jenkins Warman and John Warman of Clearwater, Fla.; a nephew, Jack (Chantel) Warman of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a great-niece, Kayleigh Warman of Chapel Hill.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Julia Fern Addington; and a brother, Dennis Earl Addington.

Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, with Pastor Willard Love officiating. Burial will be in West Union Street Cemetery.

There will be no public calling hours observed. Trimble Lodge 557 will conduct Masonic services at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Reva Verity
Died: Tuesday, June 18, 2002

ATHENS -- Reva Mae Verity, 85, of Athens, died early Tuesday morning, June 18, 2002, at Kimes Convalescent Center in Athens.

Born March 26, 1917, in Meigs County, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Lillie Kelley Douglas. She was a graduate of Olive-Orange High School.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Gordon; daughters Sue (Michael) Johnson of Newton Falls, Patricia Ducharme of North Ridgeville, and Kay Verity of Athens; sons Neal Verity of Akron and Michael Verity of Delaware, Ohio; grandchildren M.D. (Julie) Johnson of Martelle, Iowa, Richard (Elaine) Johnson of Aledo, Texas, Danielle (Gary) Ward of Craneberry, Pa., Andrea Verity of Dayton and Jacqui Verity of Columbus; a great-grandchild; and a brother, Avery (Opal) Douglas of Columbus Grove.

She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Flora Verity; sisters Mary Meeks and Josie Clouse; and brothers Vernon Sloan, Merle Sloan, Oden Sloan and Emerson Douglas.

Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, with minister Willard Love officiating. Burial will be in The Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.
