REEDSVILLE - Mary Jane Goebel, 94, of Reedsville, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, in Tuppers Plains.

Born Nov. 5, 1908, in Marietta, she was the daughter of the late Walter Clifford and Ethel Bradbury Armor Peters. She is survived by her husband, Frederick B. Goebel, and children Frederick W. Goebel, Martha Mead and Mary Rose.

A memorial Mass will be July 5, 11 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pomeroy. Burial was Thursday in the Goebel Family Cemetery, Coolville. Arrangements are by Ewing Funeral Home, Pomeroy.

Contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pomeroy.

Edwin Carlton Stephenson
Died: Wednesday, June 04, 2003
Age: 81

WELLSTON - Edwin Carlton “Cheezy” Stephenson Sr., 81, of Roaring Gap, N.C., and Ocala, Fla., died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston Salem, N.C.

Born in Wellston, he was the son of the late Austin F. and Eva Gensler Stephenson, and the stepson of the late Scott Schneck. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Sadler Stephenson, and three sons, Edwin, David and Scott.

Services will be Sunday, 2:30 p.m., at Ridgewood Cemeter, Wellston.

Friends may call at J.P. Rogers and Sons Funeral Home in Wellston on Sunday from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Guinavere Romine Fitch
Died: Wednesday, June 04, 2003

ATHENS - Guinavere Romine Fitch of Athens went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 4, 2003, while she and her husband were wintering in Florida.

Born in Parkersburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Ed and Grace Null. She was a graduate of Glenville State College and a retired teacher who taught fourth grade at Gihon School in South Parkersburg for 15 years.

She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Raymond Fitch; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Steve Workman of Washington, W.Va., and Phyllis and Dave Morehead of Parkersburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Vickey Romine of Parkersburg; a stepson, Mathew Fitch of Athens; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Null of Washington, W.Va; three nephews and a niece

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Louie Marshall Romine; her brother, Ed “Gene” Null; two nephews and a great-grandson.

Services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor David Easter officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., and on Monday before the serivce.

Lauretta Snyder Thacker Fortney
Died: Wednesday, June 04, 2003
Age: 77

EWINGTON - Lauretta Snyder Thacker Fortney, 77, of Ewington, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Adena Regional Medical Center, Chillicothe.

Born Dec. 4, 1925, in Alice, she was the daughter of the late Arnold and Mildred Pelphrey Snyder. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Faye Neiding; sons Donald Leo Thacker and David Lee Thacker; a stepson, Terry Fortney; and a stepdaughter, Patricia Fortney. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orrie Fortney.

Arrangements will be announced by McWilliams Funeral Home, Wellston.

Edward Francis Flood Jr.
Died: Monday, May 26, 2003

NELSONVILLE - Edward Francis Flood Jr. was born on May 26, 1959, and passed away on May 26, 2003. “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He leads me to waters where I may rest.” Edward Flood has passed from this life into everlasting life.

His passing is survived by his son, Christopher Jordan, of California; his parents, Queenda and Edward Flood of Florida; three sisters, Jackie Gorski and Peg Naparlo of New Jersey, and Dr. Diane Bargonetti of New York City. He also is survived by loving friends and family in Ohio.

Edward was known for his love of life, deep faith, great sense of humor, tremendous musical abilities and talents, and love and devotion to his son. Edward was a graduate of St. Cecelia’s School and John F. Kennedy High School of Iselin, N.J. He also attended the University of South Florida and Hocking College.

Edward was an employee of Athens Country Club over the past several years. He was an accomplished musician and played guitar in several bands throughout Nashville and the Midwest. He was a gifted composer and writer. Edward also excelled as a golfer and an athlete.

There will be a memorial service next Wednesday, at 7 p.m., at Richland United Methodist Church in Athens.

The family is asking that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Richland United Methodist Church, 60 Pomeroy Road, Athens, 45701-9475.

Joe Lee Riley
Died: Friday, March 06, 2020
Age: 63

McARTHUR - Joe Lee Riley, 63, of Columbus, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Mount Carmel East Hospital, Columbus.

Born Dec. 24, 1939, in Henderson, Tenn., he was the son of the late Richard Lee and Inez Riley.

Services were today at 11 a.m. at PawPaw Cemetery, Vinton County, under the direction of Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur.

David S. Fraedrich
Died: Saturday, June 14, 2003
Age: 54

NELSONVILLE - David S. Fraedrich, 54, of Nelsonville, passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, after a brief illness.

Born April 17, 1949, in Logan, he was the son of the late William “Bill” Fraedrich and Martha Sheppard Fraedrich.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jeanie West Fraedrich; a son, Michael William (Shonna) Fraedrich; a daughter, Angela Christine Fraedrich and her fiance, Justin Booth, all of Nelsonville; grandchildren Kristina Bycofski and Wyatt May; two special nephews, Tim Adams of Pataskala and Tony Adams of Reynoldsburg; and a host of friends.

David was a 1967 graduate of Nelsonville High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Miami University in Oxford in 1971. He was the current senior vice president/treasurer of Rocky Shoes and Boots, a member of the Board of Directors of Rocky Boots; chairman of the Board of Trustees of Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville/Ohio Health; was Nelsonville Person of the Year in 1999; was chairman of the “Be A Friend” fund drive for Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville; a member of the Baird Brothers Co. Foundation; a board member of Sunpower Inc.; a board member of the finance committee of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville; one of the founders of Five Star Enterprises in the Dominican Republic; a member of the Freeport Consortium; a member of Athens Country Club and Black Diamond Ranch Country Club of Lecanto, Fla.; a fundraiser for the Boy Scouts of America; a former Rotary Club member; past member of the 317 Board; a former member of Nelsonville City Council; and was an avid golfer, hunter and sportsman.

A celebration of the life of David S. Fraedrich will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Stuart’s Opera House, 52 Public Square, Nelsonville. Officiating will be the Rev. Harold McConnell and close friends of David S. Fraedrich. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Calling hours will be observed today from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Warren-Brown Funeral Home in Nelsonville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Stuart’s Opera House, 34 Public Square, Nelsonville, 45764.

David Harry Bell
Died: Saturday, June 14, 2003

LOGAN - David Harry Bell, 73, of Logan, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster.

Born Oct. 31, 1929, in Logan, he was the son of the late Harry Martin and Dorothy Elizabeth Walburn Bell.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret A. “Marty” Gumpf Bell.

A third-generation oil man, Mr. Bell had been active in the Ohio oil and gas industry for more than 50 years. He founded Bell Well Service in 1957 and was president of Bell Drilling and Producing Co. for more than 40 years.

He was involved in many civic associations, including Rotary Club (past president), American Cancer Society of Hocking County (past president), Logan Chamber of Commerce (past director) and Hocking County Republican Committee (past executive chairman). He was a member of Logan First Presbyterian Church, and was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Bell also is survived by his children, Mrs. Peter (Julie) Kaldis of Northville, Mich., Mrs. Kevin (Jennifer) Flowers of Powell and David C. Bell of Lancaster; six grandchildren; and a sister, Marjorie Spalsbury of Logan.

Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Logan First Presbyterian Church, 2 W. Hunter St., Logan, with the Rev. Lawrence R. Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home in Logan on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to services.

The family suggests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 151 Lake St., Lancaster; or to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd St., New York, N.Y., 10016.

Wesley Grounds Sr.
Died: Friday, June 13, 2003
Age: 64

GOSHEN, IND. - Wesley “Larry” Grounds Sr., 64, of Goshen, Ind., died Friday, June 13, 2003, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Jan. 28, 1939, in Decota, W.Va., he was the son of the late Henry and Bertha (Perry) Grounds. He was a retired mechanic for United Mine Workers of America, having worked at Bethlehem Steel in West Virginia, Southern Ohio Coal in Ohio, Goshen Rubber and Smoker Craft in Indiana.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 1957 and the United Church of God in Elkhart, Ind.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Hodge; three sons, Wesley Grounds Jr. of the home, Mark (Misty) Grounds of Goshen, Ind., and Jason (Krissy) Grounds of Dunlap, Ind.; two grandchildren; two brothers, George (Jan) Grounds of Albany and John (Connie) Grounds of Okeechobee, Fla.; and a sister, Ailene Estep of Gallipolis.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Herndon, Herbert and Dobbie Grounds; and seven sisters, Josephine Markin, Ellen Shiltz, Kathleen Johnson, Ester Stanley, Evelyn, Mae and Lee Grounds.

Funeral services will be held Monday at noon at the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, Ind., with Pastor Vernon Hargrove officiating. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen, Ind.

Calling hours will be held today at the funeral from 4 to 6 p.m. and on Monday from 11 a.m. to noon.

Memorial contributions may be made to his grandchildren, in care of Linda Grounds, or the Home/Hospice Program of Goshen General Hospital, 200 High Park Ave., Goshen, Ind., 46526.
