Gladys Zalenski
LOGAN - Gladys L. Zalenski, 82, of New Lexington, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at St. Ann's Hospital emergency room, Westerville.
Born Sept. 8, 1918, in Glouster, she was the daughter of the late John and Dominnika Trzaska Zglenicki. She was a retired banker, and was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, New Lexington..
She is survived by a sister, Dorothy H. Zglenicki Roman of Rocky River; a goddaughter and niece, Dorothy D. Roman of Rocky River; and several other nieces and nephews, including Patricia Roman Atkinson of Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Zalenski and Jean Sikora.
Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Glouster, with Father John Mucha officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Buchtel.
Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster. Wake services will be Thursday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

George Genheimer
POMEROY - George Chester Genheimer, 98, of 36759 Rocksprings Road, Pomeroy, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center, Pomeroy.
He was born Dec. 14, 1901, in Chester Twp., son of the late Wesley and Lucinda Heilman Genheimer. He is survived by a daughter, Betty Lou Dean of Chester. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary A. Genheimer, and a daughter, Marie Koblentz.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Home, Pomeroy, with burial in Chester Cemetery.
Friends may call Monday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Floyd Gabriel
ATHENS - Floyd D. "Red" Gabriel, 84, of Salem Road, Athens, died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at his home.
Born in Athens on April 9, 1916, he was the son of the late John and Goldie Lewis Gabriel. He was a retired carpenter and mason, having been employed in construction business. A veteran of World War II, he served with the SeaBees in the Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, where he had received two bronze stars. He was a lifetime member of The Plains VFW and a member of Golden Wings CB Club.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Walker Gabriel; daughters Cheryl Gabriel of Athens, Loretta Jeancola, Jackie Fleming and Linda Brooks of Vermilion, and Judy Slone of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Juanita Gabriel of Chillicothe; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Leola Shields of The Plains; and brothers Glen Gabriel of Athens and Jack (Virginia) Gabriel of The Plains.
He was preceded in death by sisters Ethelene "Faye" Jenner and Irene Wade, and brothers Elmer, Kenneth, Si and Russell Gabriel.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, by Pastor Ben Warner, with entombment in Athens Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The Combined VFW Honor Guard will hold military rites at the cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 .m.

Opal Ford
ATHENS - Opal Pauline Ford, 80, of Athens and Amesville, died Sunday afternoon, Oct. 22, 2000, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 17,1920, in Ames Twp., she was the daughter of the late Clinton and Nellie McDaniel Brown. A beautician for 50 years, she had owned and operated a beauty shop by herself and with her late sister, Odessa Howell. She was a 1938 graduate of Athens High School and a 1939 graduate of Lillian Johnson Academy, Columbus. Early in life, she was employed by Bennett Dairy of Athens and later in life by Murray Hotel on Mackinac Island, Mich. She was a member of K.T. Crossen Post 21 Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 3477 of Athens Auxiliary and Military Order of Cooties Auxiliary.
She is survived by a daughter, Lula Ford of Athens; and by special friends Betty Jo Wade, Betty Linscott, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sligo and Betsy Koon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1998; a sister, Odessa Howell; brothers Myron and Byron Brown; a son-in-law, James L. Davis; and a nephew, Daniel Brown Howell.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5812, Athens 45701; American Cancer Society, 138 Marietta Road, Suite D, Chillicothe, Ohio 45601; or Athens County Cat Shelter, 8500 Hoon Drive, Athens 45701.
A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

Erma Byers
CHAUNCEY - Erma F. Byers, 73, of Chauncey, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center, Pomeroy.
Born Dec. 31, 1926, in Jackson County, Ohio, she was daughter of the late Asa and Jennie Barber Canter.
She is survived by sons Bill Ray (Cheryl) Smith of Glouster, Dan (Phyllis) Koska of Logan, Charles (Barb) Koska of Alliance and Gary (Erlene) Koska of Springfield, Ind.; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Byers, who passed away on Dec. 12, 1978; a son, Bobby Lee Smith; and a brother, Wid Canter.
Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan, with the Rev. Ernie Perkins officiating. Burial will be in New Fairview Cemetery, Rockbridge.
Calling hours were Saturday.

Elizabeth Lyons
TUPPERS PLAINS - Elizabeth Lyons, 78, of Tuppers Plains, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at the St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg.
She was born July 5, 1922, in Long Bottom, a daughter of the late Stanley and Ulah Smith Swan. She was a homemaker, and a member of Tuppers Plains Christian Church, Eastern Star of Guysville and the Rose Garden Club of Tuppers Plains.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lindsey Lyons; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lindsey and Carol Ann Lyons III of Mineral Wells, W.Va., and LaMar and Shirley Lyons of Tuppers Plains; a daughter and son-in-law, Lyndall and Lawrence Hasbargen of Parkersburg; six grandchildren, Kent Hasbargen, LaMar Lyons II, Chris Lyons, Lynnette Gainer, Kira Allen and Leann Lyons; two step-grandchildren, Kim Adams and Lisa McBride; and two great-grandsons, Byce and Devyn Gainer.
Services will be Tuesday, 1 p.m., at White-Moquin Funeral Home, Coolville, with Rev. Terry Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Sandhills Cemetery, Long Bottom.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Darlene Burdic
LOGAN - Darlene G. Burdic, 65, of Logan, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at her residence.
She was born on Sept. 24, 1935, in Boise, Idaho, the daughter of John West of Oregon and the late Wilma Stubbs West. She is survived by her children, Rick, Randy, Michael, Teresa, Anita, Molli, Patricia, Lisa and Lori. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Burdic.
Service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. Hilltop Cemetery, Nyssa, Ore. Calling hours will be held Tuesday at Lienkaemeer Chapel, Nyssa, Ore.

Cora Patton
LOGAN - Cora Patton, 83, of Logan, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.
Born Feb. 22, 1917, in Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late James and Cora Mohler Crane. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Patton.
Services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan, with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Barbara Travis
NEW STRAITSVILLE - Barbara Jean Travis, 36, of Logan, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, in the emergency room at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.
Born Sept. 9, 1964, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of Marshall Kelly and Nina Marie Malone Ward of Buchtel.
Mrs. Travis was a homemaker. She attended Free Pentecostal Church, Buchtel.
She is survived by her husband, Delmar G. Travis of New Straitsville; sons David, Timothy and Brian Travis, and daughters Melissa and Kayla Travis, all of the home; brothers Michael (Michelle) Ward and Shawn (Nicole) Ward of Nelsonville; and sisters Betty Mae (Bill) Gambill of New Marshfield, Annie (Van) Wright of Nelsonville and Janese (Nathan) Lax of Glouster.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Free Pentecostal Church, Buchtel, with the Rev. David Shafer officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.
Friends may call at the church today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Arrangements are by Roberts Funeral Home, Logan.

Arnold Mathena
NELSONVILLE - Arnold L. Mathena, 61, of Nelsonville, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born Nov. 20, 1938, in Nelsonville, he was the son of the late Wilbert and Clara Fidler Mathena.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley D. Glenaman Mathena; sons Arnold Ray Mathena of Nelsonville and William H. Mathena of Glouster; daughter Barbara Ann Leonard of Daytona Beach, Fla.; grandchildren who are being raised in the home, Jesse Sheets and Tiffany and Heather Mathena; other grandchildren Marissa Mathena of Huntington, W.Va.; Gregory Sheets of The Plains, LuAnn Leonard of Edgewater, Fla., William "B.L.," Derrick and Tabita Mathena of Glouster, and Carrie Mathena of Nelsonville; step-grandchildren Betty, Brent and Andy Monroe of Nelsonville; and a niece and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Mathena; and brothers Virgil and James Mathena.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Warren-Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with Brother Robert Beecher officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery, Perry County.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Margaret Ward
BUCHTEL - The Rev. Margaret Josephine Ward, 89, of Buchtel, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, Oct. 19, 2000, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.
Daughter of the late Tom and Katherine Windle Lowery, she was born in Haydenville. She had been a minister for 38 years and at the time of her death was the minister of Free Pentecostal Church of Buchtel. She was a former resident of The Plains.
She is survived by a daughter, Ruth Leal of Round Rock, Texas; sons and daughters-in-laws Marshall "Buddy" (Nina) Ward of Nelsonville, and Tom (Maxine) Ward of Lancaster; and 16 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Ward, in 1962; a daughter, Betty Shafer; a son, Dana Ward; sisters Sylvia Ward and Elizabeth Gregory; and a brother, Kelly Lowery.
Services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. at Free Pentecostal Church of Buchtel by Pastors Ronald Chunn and Buddy Muncey. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.
Friends may call at the church Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens

Virgil Walls
ATHENS - Virgil F. Walls, 72, of Lancaster, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at his residence.
He was born May 9, 1928, in Athens, son of the late James and Edna Davis Walls. He was a retired sub-contractor, a machinist for Diamond Electronics, a farmer, and owner of Wall Live Coon Traps. He was a World War II Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Dessie Walls; a son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Marlana Walls of Lancaster; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Dianna Hart of Lancaster, Barbara F. and Michael Lanning of Lancaster, Terry L. Headley of Sugar Grove, and Penny K. and Charles Riley of Lancaster; 21 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Gail Griffin, and Junie and Richard Coe, all of Athens; three brothers, Vernon Walls of Columbus, and Melvin Walls and Roger Walls, both of Athens; two aunts; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Wallace; and a brother, Millard Walls.
Funeral services will be held Monday, 10:30 a.m., at Frank E. Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Lancaster. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Fairfield County.
