Kathryn Baird
Died: Wednesday, December 12, 2001

ATHENS -- Kathryn Katy Reed Baird, daughter of Russell N. and Cecelia S. Tate Baird of New Marshfield, passed away in Sacramento, Calif., on Dec. 12, 2001, of Hodgkin's lymphoma. She was 44 years old.

In addition to her parents, Katy is survived by her husband, Rick Byer of Sacramento, Calif.; two brothers, Michael (Kathy) Baird of Pickerington and Russell J. (Vanessa) Baird of Wharton, Texas; three sisters, Mary Ellen (Stanley S.) Shaw of Falls Church, Va., Margaret (John) Goodwin of Athens, and Jane Baird of Mankato, Minn.; five nieces and four nephews, Krin Goodwin of Gainesville, Fla., Matt Goodwin of Cincinnati, Megan Goodwin of Athens, Brant Baird of Houston, Texas, Greg Baird of College Station, Texas, Erin Baird of Austin, Texas, and Dane, Kristen and Kelsey Forsberg; and her parents-in-law, Bobbi and Byng Forsberg of Lodi, Calif.

Katy was graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor of fine arts degree. She received her Doctor of Jurisprudence from Northeastern University School of Law in 1987. Katy was the chief appellate attorney for the federal defender's office in Sacramento, Calif., until her retirement in 1995. She had previously worked as an attorney for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, and as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Lawrence Karlton, chief judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Athens. The family will visit with friends in the church hall following the service. A private family graveside service will be held at a later time.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the Lymphoma Research Foundation of America, 8800 Venice Blvd., No. 207, Los Angeles, Calif., 90034.

George Carter
Died: Tuesday, December 11, 2001

LOGAN -- George Rudolph Rudy Carter, 79, of Duncan, S.C., formerly of Logan, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at his residence.

Born July 26, 1922, in New Marshfield, he was the son of the late George W. and Mary E. McConaha Carter.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Stevens Carter; and sons Bruce, Richard and Curtis Carter.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Starr United Methodist Church.

No calling hours will be observed, and the family requests that flowers be omitted. Arrangements are by Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan.

Minnie McGrath
Died: Monday, December 17, 2001

THE PLAINS -- Minnie Elizabeth McGrath, 80, of First Street Village Apartments, The Plains, formerly of Harrisonville, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.

Born Aug. 15, 1921, in Meigs County, she was the daughter of the late Milton and Mary J. Jewell Bratton. She attended Scipio High School and Mount Union Church.

She is survived by sons Otis (Gloria) McGrath of The Plains and Larry (Barbara) McGrath of Guysville; granddaughters Sascha McGrath of The Plains, Hauna Dial of Texas, Cheryl McGrath of Guysville, and Rhonda McGrath and April McGrath of Pomeroy; and grandsons Terry McGrath of Nelsonville, Michael Morrow of Huntsville, Ala., Gary McGrath of Guysville, Charles McGrath and Tony McGrath of Pomeroy, and Jimmy McGrath and his mother, Pat Ellis, of Lake City, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; a son, Charles M. McGrath; a grandson, Steve McGrath; and an identical twin, Mollie McGrath.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, with Pastor Danny Jeffrey officiating. Burial will be in Shaw Cemetery, Logan.

Friends may call at the funeral home today, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Russell Cole
Died: Sunday, December 16, 2001

CHESTERHILL -- Russell V. Cole, 74, of Chesterhill, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

Born June 3, 1927, in Coolville, he was the son of the late Elmer and Viola Chute Cole.

Mr. Cole is survived by his wife, Macil Kenney Cole; a son, Jerry M. Cole; and a daughter, Vickie Armstrong.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Stone-Matheny Funeral Home in Chesterhill, with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Coolville.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with Masonic services beginning at 8:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chesterhill Fire Department.

Judith Critchfield
Died: Sunday, December 16, 2001

NEWARK -- Judith Ann Judi Ogle Critchfield, 59, of Newark, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Licking Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 28, 1942, in Marietta to the late Collins Bud and Alice Jacoby Critchfield.

Mrs. Critchfield was a graduate of the University of Rio Grande and was employed as a bookkeeper at Jones, Norpell, List, Miller and Howarth.

She is survived by her husband, Craig L. Critchfield of Newark; sisters Linda (Lowell) Russ of McArthur and Alice (Lynn) Blackburn of Columbus; a brother, Thomas (Judy) Ogle of Logan, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Jeannie Critchfield of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Winifred Ogle of Niantic, Conn.; 10 nephews, three great-nieces and two great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, David Jacoby Ogle.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Instead of a memorial service, friends are asked to send notes of remembrance and memories to the home.

Michael Fraley
Died: Sunday, December 16, 2001

ALBANY -- Michael Fraley, 48, of Sisson Road, Albany, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born June 3, 1953, in Beckley, W.Va., he was the son of Clarence E. and Jacqueline Hamilton Fraley of Albany. He was a timberman and owned and operated Fraley Logging Co. He was also an avid fisherman and social member of Albany VFW Post 9893.

Besides his parents, he is survived by three sons, Dana, Michael and David Fraley of Albany; a daughter, Katrina Fraley of Albany; and a sister, Carol (Roger) Escue of Orient.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother and an infant daughter.

Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with Roger Escue officiating. Burial will be in School Lot Cemetery.

Calling hours will be today from 3 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dennis Hixson
Died: Sunday, December 16, 2001

ATHENS -- Dennis E. Hixson, 88, of North Peach Ridge Road, Athens, died at his home late Sunday evening, Dec. 16, 2001.

Born June 2, 1913, on LaFollette Road, Ames Twp., he was the son of the late Amos Edwin and Iva Ellen Mingus Hixson. He was an avid outdoorsman, and was retired from Abex Corp., where he was a tool and die maker. He attended Carthage-Troy and McDougal Schools. Early in life he was a farmer and coal miner and was in the CCC. He was a member of South Canaan Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Cledythe Pauline; daughters Beverly (Tom) Danner and Lynda (John) Wachenschwanz of Athens; a sister, Marsha (Brad) King of Pataskala; a son-in-law, Joe Bartlett of Athens; a sister-in-law, Helen Hixson of Athens; a brother-in-law, George (Arlie) Halbirt of Athens; eight granddaughters and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Bartlett; a son, Larry Hixson; a sister, Maude Halbirt; and brothers Edwin and William Bill Hixson.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Monty McCune officiating. Burial will be in McDougal Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday beginning at noon.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Canaan Baptist Church, 17387 S. Canaan Road, Athens, or Appalachian Community Visiting Nurses, Hospice and Health Services, 30 Herrold Ave., Athens, 45701.

Glenna Kennedy
Died: Saturday, December 15, 2001

CHESTERHILL -- Glenna Kennedy, 62, a former resident of the Chesterhill area, went to be with the Lord late Saturday afternoon, Dec. 15, 2001, at Arbors Nursing Center of Marietta.

Daughter of the late Romanuas and Irma Mayle Kennedy, she was born May 31, 1938, in Athens County. Mrs. Kennedy was faithful to Lathrop Mission.

She is survived by sisters Marjorie (Eugene) Tabler of Chesterhill and Maxine Driggs of Stewart; brothers Tom (Pauline) Kennedy of Summit Station, Gillian (Margaret) Kennedy of Grove City, and a twin, Glenn (Sherry) Kennedy of Reynoldsburg; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Irma Mayle; and a brother, Russell Kennedy.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Mount Hermon Church, conducted by Pastor James Brown, with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, and Wednesday one hour prior to services at the church.

Curtis Mayle
Died: Saturday, December 15, 2001

FREDRICKTOWN -- Curtis G. Mayle, 63, of Fredricktown, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.

Born Feb. 23, 1938, in Marietta, he was the son of the late Jason E. Mayle and Jessie M. Mayle.

Mr. Mayle is survived by his wife, Linda Lyons Mayle; three sons, Curtis Mayle, Steve Mayle and Brian Mayle; and two daughters, Debby Norris and Michelle Tabler.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Stone-Matheny Funeral Home, Chesterhill, with burial in Mount Hermon Cemetery, Sharpsburg.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mildred Hooper
Died: Friday, December 14, 2001

ATHENS -- Mildred L. Hooper, 79, of Marion, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Morning View Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 6, 1922, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Nora Edna Dixon Fulton.

She was a cook for 10 years at Eagles Lodge 337 in Marion, where she was a member.

She is survived by her companion, James Barlow of Marion; a brother, Darrell Bud Fulton of Albany; four sisters, Louise Slater of Lancaster, Phyllis (Clyde) Pratt of Athens, Jean (James) Jordan of Glouster and Carol (Kenneth) Gabriel of Maryland.

She was preceded in death by her husband James T. Hooper, who died Dec. 12, 1980. They were married Nov. 24, 1962, in Athens. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Freda Masten; two brothers, Hubert Buck and Norman Bus Fulton; and a stepson, Garry L. Hooper.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Boyd Funeral Home, Marion, with the Rev. Howard Stroble officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Zella Ogier
Died: Thursday, December 13, 2001

WELLSTON -- Zella Burr Ogier, 94, of Chillicothe, formerly of Wellston, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Chillicothe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a short illness.

She was born Aug. 25, 1907, in Vinton County to the late Alvin and Flora Nichols Burr. She was married Dec. 24, 1929, to Theodore R. Ogier, who died Nov. 9, 1955.

Surviving are nieces and nephews Alvin Burr, William Burr, Marylou Joseph, Audrey Walding, Norma Wilson and Helen Ross, all of Washington Court House, Robert Burr of Delaware, Joanne Foster of Bonita Springs, Fla., Leland Hatfield of Newark, Betty Morris of Locust Grove, Va., and Gwendolyn Sams and Marie Stires of Jeffersonville; a great-niece, Donna Jean Lamson of Columbus; and a great-nephew, Henry Burr of McArthur.

Mrs. Ogier had been making her home with her friend and relative, Joyce Atwood. She was preceded in death by a sister and five brothers. She was a 56-year member of Winters United Methodist Church of Jackson County, a member of Washington Twp. Grange and Ray Senior Citizens, and had been a 4-H leader.

Funeral services will be today at 1:30 p.m. at Ware Funeral Home, Chillicothe, with Dr. Dennis Mohler officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgewood Cemetery, Wellston. Pallbearers will be Alvin Burr, Henry Burr, Robert Burr, Leland Hatfield, Thomas Hess and James Morrow. Honorary pallbearers will be William Burr, Maynard Joseph and Sam Wilson.

Calling hours were Saturday at the funeral home.

Hazel McNutt
Died: Wednesday, December 12, 2001

LOGAN -- Hazel McNutt, 82, of Logan, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at her residence.

Born April 30, 1919, in Floyd County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late John and Polly Perry Collins.

Mrs. McNutt was preceded in death by husbands Boyd Castle Sr., Alton Vickery and Jasper McNutt.

She is survived by sons Boyd Junior Castle and David Castle, and daughters Pauline Horn, Loretta Castle, Marie Christian, Pam Evans and Jackie Wildermuth.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in New Fairview Cemetery.

Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
