Evelyn Ayers
Died: Wednesday, December 26, 2001

CHAUNCEY -- C. Evelyn Ayers, 92, of Chauncey, formerly of Athens, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 26, 2001, at Smithville-Western Care Center, Wooster.

She was born Feb. 15, 1909, in Creston, Ohio, daughter of the late John Emmett and Mary Elizabeth High Steele.

Mrs. Ayers was employed for 17 years at Packaging Corp. of America. She was a member of Athens First Church of God and a life member of the Women of the Church of God.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Clinton Noble of Rittman; a daughter, Bettie Cline of Rittman; a son, Joe Ayers of Barberton; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Ayers, in 1992; a son, Eugene Edward Ayers; a son-in-law, Lawrence Buck Cline; nine sisters and five brothers.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, by the Rev. William Shepler, with burial in West Union Street Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Mary Dollsmatsch
Died: Wednesday, December 26, 2001

LOGAN -- Mary Alice Dollmatsch, 88, of Logan, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Logan Healthcare Center.

Born April 11, 1913, in New Straitsville, she was the daughter of the late William and Bridget Crow Auker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Warren Dollsmatsch.

A funeral Mass will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church, Logan. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., where a Christian vigil service will be held at 7:30.

Lydia Mayle
Died: Wednesday, December 26, 2001

CUTLER -- Lydia I. Mayle, 80, of Cutler, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at her residence.

Born July 19, 1921, in Cutler, she was the daughter of the late Emlin and Lillie Harris Kennedy.

She is survived four sons, William G., Errol K., Phillip O. and Terry L. Mayle; and two daughters, Lillie S. Mayle and Thelma R. Reed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy L. Mayle.

Services will be Saturday, 1 p.m., at Cutler Mission Church. Burial will be in Miller Cemetery.

Friends may call at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home, Chesterhill, on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Elaine Newman
Died: Wednesday, December 26, 2001

NELSONVILLE -- Elaine Newman, 85, of Nelsonville, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Pine Hills Continuing Care Center.

She was born Nov. 28, 1916, in Athens County, daughter of the late William and Verna Conley Dearing. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur Newman and John Korchok. She is survived by three daughters, Sonja Sis Smith, Nancy Newman and Lynn Bishop.

Graveside services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at Whitmore Cemetery, Buchtel.

Arrangements are by Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville.

Marvin Reed
Died: Tuesday, December 25, 2001

REEDSVILLE -- Marvin Wendell Reed, 70, of Reedsville, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, after a lengthy illness.

He was born March 9, 1931, in Port Homer, Ohio, but resided in Reedsville, Meigs County, his entire life.

Marvin served his country in the Korean War, from 1951 to 1953, as a corporal with two terms of frontline service. He was employed by the United States Postal Service at the age of 17 via boat across the Ohio River to West Virginia. Then he served in the Korean War. He worked at Union Carbide/Elkem Metals of Marietta, from where he retired in 1987 after 30 years. He was a member, church elder and deacon of Faith Full Gospel Church in Long Bottom, where his son, Steven, is pastor.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Darlene Smith Reed; three sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Steven and Susan Reed of Reedsville, Craig and Barbera Reed of Reedsville and James and Terry Reed of Marietta; his seven grandchildren, Angela Reed Devlin of Parkersburg, W.Va., Andrew Reed, Autumn Reed, Shawn Reed and Jennifer Reed of Reedsville, and Jaimie and Hunter Reed of Marietta; five brothers and two sisters, Ina Jean and Ray Weaver of Chillicothe, Dorhman and Phyllis Reed of Reedsville, Maxine and John Dupre of Fairborne, Robert and Carlotta Reed of Wheelersburg, Dennis Reed of Ferndale, Fla., Gary Reed of Reedsville, and David and Rowa Reed of Reedsville; and a sister-in-law, Frances Reed of Reedsville.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Rosemary Reed; his parents, Alvin and Roxie Reed; a brother, Maurice Reed; and a sister, Kathleen Reed Smith.

Funeral services will be private and will be held at Faith Full Gospel Church in Long Bottom on Friday, with the Rev. Charles Hall officiating. Interment will be in Reedsville Cemetery, with full military rites observed.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the church.

Arrangements are by White-Moquin Funeral Home, Coolville.

Donald Shahan II
Died: Tuesday, December 25, 2001

LOGAN -- Donald Eugene D.J. Shahan II, 22, of Logan, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in Buchtel.

He was born Nov. 8, 1979, in Fairfield County, son of Donald Eugene Shahan Jr. of Logan and Sheila Ann Fisher Shahan of Lancaster.

Services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Knollwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Margaret Irvin
Died: Monday, December 24, 2001

ATHENS -- Margaret Peggy Ann Irvin, 71, of Athens, died unexpectedly early Monday morning, Dec. 24, 2001, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 8, 1930, in Murray City, she was the daughter of the late Jabez and Faye Wein Hamer. A 1948 graduate of Athens High School, she was formerly employed with the Ohio State Highway Patrol where she was a dispatcher for 11 years and an exam clerk for the drivers exam station for 16 years. She was a member of The Plains United Methodist Church, Athens Chapter 175 Order of Eastern Star and K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, William; daughters Chris (Michael) Irvin-Brown of Worthington and Diane (Virgil) Reeves of Albany; a son, William M. (Joy) Irvin IV of Port Orchard, Wash.; grandchildren Lynda Irvin of Athens, Andrew Reeves of Albany, and Julia, Victoria and Olivia Irvin of Port Orchard; a sister, Patricia (Cleetus) Carsey of Caldwell; brothers William (Nancy) Hamer of Hillard and Wayne (Carolyn) Hamer of Aurora, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters Betty Wyant and Helen James; and brothers Gene and Jack Hamer.

Services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at The Plains United Methodist Church, with the Revs. David Roach and David Cogar officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Friends may call at Jagers and Sons Funeral Homer, Athens, on Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., where Athens Chapter Order of Eastern Star 175 will hold memorial services at 8:30.

Lillian Safran
Died: Monday, December 24, 2001

ATHENS -- Lillian F. Safran, 80, of The Lindley Inn, The Plains, died early Monday afternoon, Dec. 24, 2001, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born June 4, 1921, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Gussie Gittle Finkelstein. A graduate of Seward Park High School in New York, N.Y., she was a retired legal secretary.

She is survived by sons Barry Safran of New York, N.Y., and Steve (Joan) Safran of Athens; two grandchildren; and a brother, Louis (Ann) Finkelstein of New York, N.Y. She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

There will be no services held in Athens. Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

Frank Kinnison
Died: Sunday, December 23, 2001

LOGAN -- Frank D. Kinnison, 67, of Logan, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.

Born Dec. 30, 1933, in Murray City, he was the son of the late Leslie and Maude Hughes Kinnison. He worked as a press operator for 26 years at Carborundum in Logan.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ron and Kittie Kinnison of Logan and Paul Kinnison of New Straitsville; a daughter, Teresa Caroolof Lancaster; three grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and a great-grandchild; and a special friend, Delores Cauthon of Logan.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and six sisters.

Services will be Thursday, 10 a.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan, with the Rev. Filmore C. Ashcraft officiating. Burial will be in Knollwood Cemetery, Logan.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Jerry Steward
Died: Sunday, December 23, 2001

ATHENS -- Jerry Lee Steward, 64, of Athens, died late Sunday morning, Dec. 23, 2001, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 28, 1937, in Athens, he was the son of Marcella Henry Steward of Athens and the late Kenneth Steward. He was a pressman for Union Printing, a 1956 graduate of Athens High School, a member of Athens Fish and Game Club and Athens Elks Lodge, and a lifetime member of Graphics Communications International Union Athens Local 269-M. He had been a Scoutmaster for Troop 71 for several years, and was a member of Athens First Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ginny Neutzling Steward; a daughter, Amy (Kim) Pretzer of Orlando, Fla.; a son, Steven Steward of Athens; and a sister, Joy (Rev. Larry) Scriven of Springfield, Mo.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, 1:30 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. David Felty officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 937 N. High St., Worthington 43085; or the National Kidney Foundation of Ohio, 1373 Grandview Ave., Suite 200, Columbus 43212.

Edward Cox
Died: Saturday, December 22, 2001

LAURELVILLE -- Edward L. Cox, 55, of Laurelville, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at his residence.

Born Jan. 29, 1946, in Hocking County, he was the son of Dorothy Hildebrandt Cox Hannon of Logan and the late Francis Cox. He is survived by a son, Tim Cox, and daughters Christy Duell and Deanna Blair.

Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Logan.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Marjorie Price
Died: Saturday, December 22, 2001

POMEROY -- Marjorie Price, 75, of Route 33, Pomeroy, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, in the extended care unit of Veterans Memorial Memorial.

Born Jan. 4, 1926, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late James and Willie C. Tomlin Miller.

She is survived by children Marlyn Price, LaJean Armstrong, Jewel Neely, Allie Mitchell, Floranell Burney, Norman Price Jr., Floyd Burney Jr. and Frederick Burney II.

Graveside services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at Miles Cemetery, Rutland.

Friends may call at Ewing Funeral Home, Pomeroy, Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Rhonda Mathena
Died: Thursday, December 20, 2001

CHAUNCEY -- Rhonda D. Mathena, 35, of Chauncey, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at her residence.

She was born May 30, 1966, in Athens County and was employed by Athens City Schools.

She is survived by her husband, James E. Mathena of Chauncey; her father, Carroll Johnston of Columbus; two sons and a daughter, James L., Jeremy A. and Heather M. Mathena, all of the home; a brother, Ernest E. Johnston of Columbus; a sister, Annetta M. Johnston of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mathena was preceded in death by her mother, Joyce Nott Johnston.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Kenneth Donley officiating. Interment will be in Whitmore Cemetery, Buchtel.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday beginning at noon.

Kimberly Mathias
Died: Thursday, December 20, 2001

ATHENS -- Kimberly Mathias, 33, of Athens, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001.

Born July 8, 1968, she was the daughter of Jennie Evener of The Plains and the late Paul Evener.

She is survived by her husband, Ray Mathias; son Kolt and daughter Kayla; sisters Paulette Chalfant, Vicky (Charlie) Adkins and Joyce (Fred) Mathias, all of Athens; and a brother, Danny (Renee) Evener of Florida.

Besides her father, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Heath Brandon Mathias.

No services or calling hours will be observed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests prayers to help them overcome their loss.
