Gary Lee Hixson
Died: Sunday, September 28, 2003
Age: 48

ATHENS - Gary Lee Hixson, 48, of Athens, passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003.

He was born in Athens on Dec. 29, 1954. He was retired from Southern Ohio Coal Co., and a 1995 RN honors graduate of Hocking College School of Nursing.

Gary is survived by his parents, Fred and Beverly Hixson, and brothers Robert and Rick. He was a loving father to Jennifer, Richard, Hanna and Glynnis. Gary was known as a loyal friend and devoted son and brother.

His time was often spent with family and friends. Gary also enjoyed outdoor hobbies such as hunting, fishing, canoeing and camping.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, 7 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Bill O’Brien officiating.

Friends may call the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until time of service.

Emerson J. Ball
Died: Sunday, September 28, 2003
Age: 92

ATHENS - Emerson J. Ball, 92, of Delaware, Ohio, formerly of Athens, died Sunday morning, Sept. 28, at Delaware Court Health Care Center.

Born Feb. 27, 1911, in Athens Twp., Athens County, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Elizabeth Winona White Ball. Mr. Ball was a retired school teacher, insurance agent and real estate developer. A graduate of The Plains High School and Ohio State University, he taught vocational agriculture for 25 years at Chesterhill High School. He was a member of Christ Community Wesleyan Church and Paramuthia Lodge 25 F&AM. He had received recognition from Margaret Creek Conservancy District for his conservancy practices.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol (James) Duff of Delaware and Dr. Angela (Kim Herzinger) Ball of Hattiesburg, Miss.; stepgrandchildren Jessica and Caitlin Herzinger of Hattiesburg; a sister, Bernice Hanna of Corapolis, Pa.; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Rheinfrank Ball, in 1998; a daughter, Dr. Mary Miller; an infant son, Jerry Ball; a sister, Angie Christman; and six brothers, Harold, Everett, Virgil, Claude, Eldon and Claire Ball Sr.

Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Denver Dodrill officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday two hours prior to the service.

D. Shawn Wolfe
Died: Sunday, September 28, 2003
Age: 28

WELLSTON - D. Shawn Wolfe, 28, of Wellston, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Jackson.

Born Aug. 16, 1975, in Parkersburg, he was the son of Virginia Hope Bird Dodson of Point Pleasant, W.Va., and Dave Wolfe of Portland. He also is survived by his wife, Kathy J. Bernard Wolfe.

Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at Cremeens Funeral Home, Racine. Burial will be in Letart Falls Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.

Zoath Monroe Sr.
Died: Sunday, September 28, 2003

THE PLAINS - Zoath “Tobby” Monroe Sr. of The Plains passed away on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born May 14, 1952, in Nelsonville, he was the son of the late William Sr. and Roxanne Hammond Monroe.

He is survived by his wife, Patty Thompson Monroe; a son, Zoath “T.J.” (Sarah) Monroe Jr. of The Plains; three daughters, Renee (Brian) McKee of Glouster, Jessica Monroe and Jason Bise of The Plains, and Latoria Presnell of The Plains; four grandchildren, Klarissa McKee, Andrew Monroe, Derek Monroe and A.J. Monroe; two brothers, Jim Monroe of Nelsonville and Bill Monroe of The Plains; and a sister, Annabelle Gilbraith of Carbondale.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ed Monroe, and a sister, Sally Cooper.

Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville, with the Rev. Carl Radcliff officiating. Interment will be in New Marshfield Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Maybelle Bartlett
Died: Sunday, September 28, 2003
Age: 96

ATHENS - Maybelle Bartlett, 96, of Athens, died early Sunday morning, Sept. 28, 2003, at Kimes Convalescent Center, Athens.

Born Aug. 4, 1908, in Kenton, she was the daughter of the late William S. and Josephine Franklin Bartlett. She was a retired practical nurse and a former employee of Sheltering Arms Hospital, O’Bleness Memorial Hospital and Kimes Convalescent Center. She attended Bliss College, after which she continued her adult education by taking courses in journalism. She worked as a private nurse whenever she was needed. During World War II, she volunteered at the Red Cross and did civil defense work when she was not on private duty as a nurse. She was former executive director of the Athens County Unit of the American Cancer Society and served for eight years. She organized the Practical Nurses Association Division 14, which covered four counties, and served as its first president for two years. She served on the Ohio Board of Directors and Presidents for five years, served as a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile and opened the blood pressure clinic under the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She was honored with a plaque from AARP for 40 years of community service.

She is survived by nephews, William A. McCammon of Athens and Dr. Robert E. (Carol) McCammon of Tampa, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Luella McCammon, Ida Jeffers and Effie Bartlett, and brothers Elmer, William, Andrew and Lewis Bartlett.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

Cynthia Marie Moncrief
Died: Saturday, September 27, 2003
Age: 37

COOLVILLE - Cynthia Marie Moncrief, 37, of Sanford, Fla., died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, in Ormond Beach, Fla.

Cindy loved the outdoors, especially the beach and ocean. She was a very outgoing person, was always fun to be around and loved to make people laugh.

She is survived by special friend Rick Yokel of Sanford, Fla.; her father and stepmother, Ron and Linda Moncrief of Parkersburg, W.Va.; her mother and companion, Mary Moncrief and Duke Bates of Lubeck, W.Va.; three brothers, Ronald P. Moncrief of Charleston, W.Va., Erick Moncrief of Parkersburg and Eddie Lambert of Fredricksburg, Va.; two sisters, April S. Moncrief of Morgantown, W.Va., and Sheila G. Chapman of Coolville; a stepbrother, Frank Steed of Kimbolten; a stepsister, Theresa Steed of Parkersburg; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Lorie Ann Moncrief.

Services will be Friday, 11 a.m., at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Jerry Caplinger officiating. Interment will follow in Center Valley Cemetery, Wirt County.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Marleen Faye Leone
Died: Saturday, September 27, 2003
Age: 54

EWINGTON - Marleen Faye “Maggie” Leone, 54, of Ewington, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Wilkesville.

Born Oct. 17, 1948, in Middleport, she was the daughter of the late William B. Matheny Sr. and Eva E. Murphy Matheny-Klinedenst. She was a factory worker and a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 476 of Wilkesville.

She is survived by two sons, Joseph Wright of Beaver and Dominic Leone of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Karen L. Brown of Wilkesville and Billie J. Stith of Glen Burnie, Md.; two brothers, William B. Matheny Jr. of Enterprise, Ala., and Keith G. Matheny of Wilkesville; her fiance, Patrick K. Napper of Ewington; four grandchildren, Kayla M., Frankie N. and Todd J. Taylor, all of Wilkesville, and Andrew S. Able of Logan; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly A. Spires.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, 6 p.m., at Wilkesville United Methodist Church. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Birchfield Funeral Home, Rutland.

Carl Everett Dickens
Died: Tuesday, September 09, 2003
Age: 61

ATHENS - Carl Everett Dickens, 61, of Concord, N.C., a graduate of Chauncey High School, died Sept. 9, 2003.

He was born in Sandusky on Oct. 29, 1941, son of the late Carl and Maxine Dickens. Mr. Dickens was an Air Force veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Harville Dickens; and a daughter, Nicole.

Funeral services were held Sept. 16 at Kettering First Church of God, with burial in Miami Valley Memory Gardens, Centerville.

Arrangements were by Tobias-Conner & Koch Funeral Home in Bellbrook.

James David Henderson
Died: Friday, December 06, 2002
Age: 43

ATHENS -- James David Henderson, 43, of Townville, S.C., died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at St. Ann's Hospital, Columbus. He was in Columbus visiting his mother, Ruby Musser Henderson.

Born in Gallipolis on April 21, 1959, he was the son of Ruby Musser Henderson and the late James Dolan Henderson. A 1977 graduate of Northland High School in Columbus, he had a bachelor of science degree in avionics. He was a retired veteran of the Air Force, having served for 18 years. After his Air Force retirement, he was employed at Lockheed in Greenville, S.C. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and NASCAR fan.

He is survived by his wife, Diana Yates Henderson; sons Patrick and Steven Henderson, both of Townville, S.C.; a daughter, Monica; two grandchildren; a sister, Terri Strobel of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, Daniel and Jeff Henderson, both of Columbus; and his maternal grandmother, Ruth Musser of Athens.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, William Musser; and paternal grandparents Corp. Robert Henderson and Margaret Henderson.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, conducted by Pastor Chris Brown. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens, with military rites conducted by the Air Force Honor Guard.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Wells T. Bostic
Died: Friday, December 06, 2002
Age: 83

HAMDEN -- Wells T. Bostic, 83, of Hamden, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at his residence.

Born May 22, 1919, in Waverly, he was the son of the late Oliver W. and Myrtle Blake Bostic. He was a career Army-Air Force veteran with 30 years of service. He was a member of Vinton Chapel Church.

Mr. Bostic is survived by six sons, William (Gwen), Wells (Tillie), Clarence (Deborah), James (Diana) and Robert (Regina) Bostic, all of Columbus, and Harley (Don'ola) Bostic of Lancaster; three daughters, Irma (Harley) Varney and Janet (J.W.) Hawk of Columbus and Jo (Harrison) Clemons of Hamden; and 28 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gustava Kathryn Loar Bostic, on May 30, 1994; a daughter, Kathryn Bostic; stepson Harvey Young; a brother, Clarence Bostic; and sisters Goldie Rader and Jean Loar.

Funeral services are Monday at noon at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with the Rev. A.B. Maloy officiating. Burial will be in Beaver Union Cemetery, with military graveside services by Vinton County VFW Post 5299.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Bettye L. Swank
Died: Friday, December 06, 2002
Age: 70

MANSFIELD -- ÊBettye L. Swank, 70, of Woodville Road, Mansfield, died Friday morning, Dec. 6, 2002, at Oak Grove Manor following an extended illness.

Mrs. Swank was born July 24, 1932, in Locan, Ala., living in Mississippi for 25 years and moving to Mansfield in August 2002.

Bettye was a member of Baptist Oakland Church. She and her late husband, Richard R. Swank, owned and operated Village Inn in Corinth, Miss. Bettye was an energetic, independent woman and spent her time as a greeter at Wal-Mart in Corinth.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Gale Wemer of Millfield, Debbie and Duane Beckel of Mansfield and Stephanie and Charlie Clark of Clearwater, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Ben, Autumn, Jamie, Jason, Charlotte, Shelly and Tommy "T.T."; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorene Imon of Birmingham, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Herman and Liller "At" Morris Wood; a daughter, Patricia J. Stinson; and a sister, Isabelia Wood.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Wappner Funeral Directors assisted the family with arrangements.

Albert R. "Dick" King Jr.
Died: Thursday, December 05, 2002
Age: 77

WELLSTON -- Albert R. "Dick" King Jr., 77, of Finley Chapel Road, Wellston, passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at Adena Regional Medical Center, Chillicothe.

Born June 27, 1925, in Columbus, he was the son of Albert D. and Lillian Downing King. He was retired from the Goodyear Atomic Plant at Piketon, was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of DAV.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Claar King; a son, Richard S. (Charlene) King of Gallipolis; two daughters, Dixie L. (Mark) Douglas of Blacklick and Claar E. (Bill) Barbour of Canfield; and grandchildren Stacey Douglas Bigony, Leea Douglas Bennett, Elizabeth Barbour Wagner, Hillary L. Barbour, Margaret E. Barbour, Alexis E. Barbour, Leslie E. King, Joshua "Levi" King and Richard "Ellis" King; great-grandson Cannon Stewart; his mother, Lillian D. King of Wellston; a brother, David (Paula) King of Wellston; two sisters, Jane (Glenn) Chevalier of Wellston and Kathleen Jeffers of Columbus; and a brother-in-law, Stephen B. Claar of Wellston.

He was preceded in death by his father, Albert D. King; a brother who died in infancy; mother-in-law Ollie D. Claar; and sister-in-law Mary Ann Claar.

Funeral services will be today at 1 p.m. at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston, with the Rev. Kay Webb officiating. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, with military services conducted by American Legion Post 371 of Wellston.

Calling hours were Saturday.
