James Sellers
Died: Thursday, July 25, 2002
Age: 65

WELLSTON -- James Sellers, 65, formerly of Wellston, died July 25, 2002, at his home surrounded by loved ones, following a long battle with cancer.

He is survived by Janet Via Sellers; a son, Matthew Sellers; and daughters, Mary Anne Cowgill, Joan Esterline and Rachel Riggs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick "Hank" and Anna Sellers.

Graveside services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Ridgewood Cemetery, under the direction of McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston.

Arthur Simpson
Died: Tuesday, July 23, 2002

MILLFIELD -- Arthur L. Simpson, 85, of Boca Raton, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at his home.

Born May 17, 1917, in Millfield, he was the son of the late Hennery and Lillian Rice Simpson. He had lived in Boca Raton since the death of his wife, Mary Viola, in March of 2000.

Arthur lived most of his life in Newark, where he taught Sunday school at a church he helped build -- The First Church of the Nazarene on Williams Street. He later worshiped at The First Church of the Nazarene on Mill Street in Newark.

During World War II, Arthur taught riveting for the manufacture of military aircraft being built at Newark Stove. He enlisted in the Army and served in Korea during the end of World War II. Arthur was a self-employed contractor who built dozens of homes in the Newark, Heath and Buckeye Lake areas. He was a Licking County sheriff's deputy, one of the first three Heath police patrolmen, and also worked as a security guard at Arrow Department Store. Art is retired from the Newark Air Force Station, where he worked as a security guard and then as a machinist.

Loving family leadership distinguishes his exemplary Christian life. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Mary Viola McCoy Simpson; his sisters, Charlene Styers, Myrtle Craig and Anna Mae Collins; and his brothers, Kenneth, Forest, Virgil and Vernon.

Mourning his death and celebrating his life are his children, John and JoAnn Simpson of Boca Raton, James E. and Susan Simpson of Newark, David L. Simpson of Granville, Peggy A. and Dick Gilbert of South Carolina. His grandchildren are Michelle Turner, Brandi Garrett, Jeff and Chad Simpson, Sue Ashcraft, Bianca Marcuccino, Monique Pinkerton, Heidi Cain, Mary Linda Conner, William Smiraglia, Rick and Shanel Gilbert. His great-grandchildren are, Brent Wills, Conner and Kaleigh Simpson, Brittani Chavez, Tiffani Edwards, Tabitha and Blake Brown, Preston and Austin Layman, Jessica and Dillon Cain, Joshua, Candice and Dustin Thomas, Kayley Gilbert, Adam and Amber Driggers, Kyle and Karee Turner. Also mourning are his sisters-in-law, Anna Mae Warner, Betty Quick and Carol Ward.

Services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at Newark Eastside Nazarene Church, 24 Mill St., with the Rev. Ernest Atwood officiating. Burial and military graveside services will be held in Newark Memorial Gardens.

Anita Young
Died: Friday, July 12, 2002

ALBANY -- Anita Grace Hatch Young, 84, died Friday, July 12, 2002.

Born Nov. 11, 1917 in Tiffin, she was a 1935 graduate of Waterloo High School in New Marshfield, and was a member of Albany Baptist Church since 1950.

She is survived by two sons, Ken Young of Guysville and Kevin Young of Albany; two daughters, Andrea Hacker of Albany and Gail Gorden of Washington state; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joan Collins of Monroe, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Leslie Young, in 1961; her parents, Floyd Martin and Joanna Mae Davis Hatch; and two brothers, Wade Hatch and Lloyd Hatch of Akron.

At the request of Mrs. Young, a private family service will be held.

Norma Wilson
Died: Wednesday, July 10, 2002

LOGAN -- Norma Wilson, 71, of Logan, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in Logan.

Born Oct. 5, 1930, in Logan, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Velma Lama Harsh. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy E. LeClain.

Services will be Monday, 10 a.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Knollwood Cemetery.

Burgess Schirtzinger
Died: Tuesday, July 09, 2002

GLOUSTER -- Burgess L. Schirtzinger, 69, of Glouster, formerly of Columbus, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Zanesville.

Born May 1, 1933, in Columbus, he was the son of the late Aaron H. and Helen Barklow Schirtzinger. He is survived by his wife, Glenna Boley Shirtzinger.

Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at St. Joseph Cemetery, Columbus.

Martha J. Childs
Died: Monday, September 22, 2003
Age: 98

MIDDLEPORT - Martha J. Childs, 98, of Middleport, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at Overbrook Center, Middleport.

Born Oct. 19, 1904, in Bradbury, she was the daughter of the late Fred W. and Minnie Harden Gilmore.

She is survived by a son, Bill Childs; and daughters Dorothy Gibbs and Janis Falkner. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Childs.

Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Fisher Funeral Home, Middleport. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Frank Turner
Died: Monday, September 22, 2003
Age: 87

ALBANY - Frank Turner, 87, of Albany, passed away on Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.

Born Aug. 12, 1916, in Dyesville, Meigs County, he was the son of the late Delbert and Cora Hull Turner. He was a 1935 graduate of Columbia High School, an Army veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart in the Italian Campaign. He retired from the Athens Mental Health Center in 1983, and was a lifetime member of Albany AMVETS Post 93, Albany VFW Post 9893 and Athens DAV.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Stout Turner; children, Julia Young of Fort Wayne, Ind., Charles (Sue) Turner of Albany, Kathryn (Mic) Grubb of Athens, Betty (Terry) Harris of Ravenna, James (Debbie) Turner of Albany and Dr. Marsha (Mark) Turner Miley of Columbus; 13 grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jon Turner, Natalie Young, Carrie Hare, Melissa Turner, Rebecca and Susanna Grubb, Michael, James and David Harris, Taylor, Turner and Tanner Miley; five great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Scott, Morgan and Sara Turner, and Gwyneth Grubb; and a brother, Warren G. Turner of Columbus.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by eight brothers, Thomas, Robert, Joseph, Henry, Glenn, Wayne, Kenneth and Ralph Turner; and five sisters, Anna Kindell, Villa Swearingen, Hazel Slater, Alice Phillips, and twin sister Mabel Gibson.

Services will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with Pastor John Elswick officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens, with military graveside services conducted by Albany VFW Post 9893.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 4 to 6 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Thomas Sankey Williams Jr.
Died: Sunday, September 21, 2003
Age: 55

ATHENS - Thomas Sankey Williams Jr., 55, of Franklin County, formerly of Athens County, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at Mount Carmel West Hospital, Columbus. He was born Feb. 14, 1948.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Williams; sons Andrew, Jonathan, Tommy, Walter and Teddy Williams; and his mother, Dorthy Mayle.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary; and his stepfather, Okay Mayle.

Friends may call at Mount Hermon Cemetery in Bartlett on Friday from noon to 2 p.m. Graveside services and burial will follow.

Beverly Jean Lehman
Died: Sunday, September 21, 2003
Age: 66

LOGAN - Beverly Jean Lehman, 66, of Logan, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan.

Born Nov. 3, 1936, in Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late Vernon and Faye Farley Nixon. She is survived by her husband, Jerry M. Lehman of Logan.

Services will be Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Born Nov. 14, 1950, in Pomeroy, he was the son of Anna Mae Batey Lewis of Middleport and the late Robert Lee Lewis Sr.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Peggy Imboden Lewis; and children, Penny Smith, Ellen Coughendur and Cindy Docz.

Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Fisher Funeral Home in Middleport. Burial will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery.

ATHENS - George Edward Bean, 66, of West Milton, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at his residence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Thurman and Thelma I. Steele Bean. He was an Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy J. Wooley Bean; sons Gary and Kenneth Bean; a daughter, Joyce; and a brother, Richard Bean of Athens.

Services will be Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at Hale-Sarver Funeral Home, West Milton.

Barbara Stuart Fuller

Age: 59

NELSONVILLE - Barbara Stuart Fuller, 59, of Nelsonville, passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at her residence in Nelsonville.

Born Oct. 18, 1943, in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late John William and Gloria Jean Hoodlett Brooks. She was the wife of John Fuller for 42 years. He survives.

Barbara was retired from Rocky Shoes and Boots, where she was vice president of retail sales for more than 17 years. Her family founded and operated Rocky Shoes and Boots. She is a graduate of Nelsonville High School and attended Nelsonville First Presbyterian Church.

Barbara is survived by sons Brooks (Linda) Fuller of Logan, Brett (Nicole) Fuller of Plain City, and Brad Fuller and his fiancée, Jennifer Roe, of Nelsonville; a daughter, Barri (Andy) Kline of Loveland, Colo.; her father-in-law, John (Waveline) Fuller of Burr Oak; grandchildren John Clay Fuller, Travis Fuller, Mackenzie Fuller, Madeleine Fuller, Rebecca Fuller, Rachael Fuller, Drew Kline and Natalie Kline; brothers Mike (Pam) Brooks of Nelsonville, Jay (Miki) Brooks of Nelsonville and Stuart (Denise) Brooks of Nelsonville; a brother-in-law, Donald (Charlene) Fuller of New Plymouth; a sister, Patricia “Tee” (Bill) Robey of Nelsonville; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday, noon, at Nelsonville First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Harold McConnell officiating. Burial will be in Asbury Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Friends may call at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
