Mary Ellen Gillespie
Died: Thursday, September 18, 2003

ATHENS - Mary Ellen Gillespie, a longtime resident of Pomeroy Road in Athens, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003.

Miss Gillespie was born Aug. 30, 1926, in Cadiz, the daughter of John W. and Mary Campbell Gillespie. She attended Cadiz schools, where she was active in the band, sports and school plays. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and choir.

She was a graduate of Ohio University, with a bachelors degree in education, and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha social sorority and the Varsity O club of the Women’s Recreation Association.

She taught elementary and high school physical education and health in the public schools of Miamisburg and Bay Village. She returned to Ohio University as a faculty member and completed a master of science degree. She retired from the university as an assistant professor of health, physical education and recreation.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lt. Jack Gillespie; and a half sister, Agnes G. Galloway.

She is survived by her stepmother, Lucille M. Gillespie of Cadiz; a half brother, John Gillespie of Newark, Del.; a half sister, Susan (Ray) Snyder of Garfield Heights; and a delightfully “motley crew of Campbell cousins,” Stuart, Ruth Ann, Ann, Margie, Chuck, Susan, Bob, Willadeen, Molly and families.

Ellen willed her body to the University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Burial will be in Cadiz Union Cemetery. Arrangements are by Borkoski Funeral Home.

Gwendolyn Pickett Roach
Died: Thursday, September 11, 2003
Age: 94

ATHENS - Gwendolyn Pickett Roach, 94, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, in Arlington, Texas.

Mrs. Roach was born Nov. 23, 1908, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a longtime resident of Athens and moved to Arlington in 1971. A graduate of Pomeroy High School, Mrs. Roach received a bachelor of science degree from Ohio University in 1930. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, and was active in the Arlington Chapter of ZTA Alumnae and the Arlington Women’s Club. She also was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church, in both Athens and Arlington.

For several years in the 1950s, she was an editor for The Athens Messenger and a member of Theta Sigma Phi, a journalism organization. She also was a science teacher in Athens.

Mrs. Roach is survived by her sister, Madolyn Markham of Plantation, Fla.; her brother, Charles Pickett of Gainesville, Fla., and Pomeroy; her daughter, Diana Ferguson of Arlington; her son, Bruce Roach of Nacogdoches, Texas; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held this Saturday, at 11:30 a.m., in Wells Cemetery.

Dedra Nicole Massie
Died: Sunday, July 27, 2003
Age: 13

GALLIPOLIS - Dedra Nicole Massie, 13, of Gallipolis, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, in Medina County.

Born Sept. 28, 1989, in Athens, she was the daughter of Timothy Miller of Dundas and Teresa Massie Becht of Gallipolis. She is survived by a brother, Joshua Massie, and grandparents Pam and Olan “Turtle” Wilt.

Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with burial in Zion Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Curtis E. Clifford
Died: Sunday, July 27, 2003
Age: 62

ATHENS - Curtis E. Clifford, 62, of Gainesville, Fla., died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Hospice Care Center, Gainesville.

Born Nov. 10, 1940, in Athens, he was the son of the late Carl and Bette Baker Clifford. He was a 1958 graduate of Athens High School, a graduate of Ohio University with a degree in fine arts, and pursued graduate studies at OU in 1968. He was a veteran of the Coast Guard, where he was a hospital corpsman from 1959-63.

He was a senior vice president at Coldwell Banker Commercial M.M. Parrish Realtors in Gainesville. He also held positions in commercial real estate at Hollywood Inc. in Hollywood, Fla., and in advertising at Campbell-Dickey Advertising Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Previously, he was an interiors photographer with Alderman Studios in High Point, N.C. He was an avid outdoorsman, former youth soccer coach and a member of the Episcopalian faith.

He is survived by a son, Colby (Tien) Clifford of Gainesville; a granddaughter, Asia Clifford of Gainesville; a sister, Christina (Dr. John) Ortman of Athens; nieces and nephews Kate Ortman, Phillip Ortman and Carl Ortman of Athens, Christopher Clifford of Hong Kong, China, and Cynthia Marsh and Derek Clifford of Starkville, Miss.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Clifford.

A funeral service will be held Aug. 8 at 4 p.m. at Athens Church of the Good Shepherd, with the Rev. Michael Jupin officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2119 S.W. 16th St., Gainesville, Fla. 32608; or Hospice of North Central Florida, 4200 N.W. 90th Blvd., Gainesville, Fla. 32606.

Cremains will be interred in West Union Street Cemetery, Athens.

Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

Roger D. Humphrey
Died: Sunday, July 27, 2003
Age: 86

LOGAN - Roger D. “Skip” Humphrey, 86, of Logan, died Sunday, July 27, 2003 at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan, after an extended illness.

Born Aug. 25, 1916, in The Plains, he was the son of the late Alonzo M. and Minnie C. Giesecke Humphrey.

Mr. Humphrey and his wife, Pauline, now deceased, owned and operated Humphrey’s Studio and Camera Shop in Logan for 30 years. The business was sold in 1975 and for several years thereafter, Skip operated an aerial photographic business. Skip and Pauline owned a cabin in Canada and vacationed there three times a year.

He attended grade and high schools in The Plains. He graduated from Ohio University in 1937, earning a bachelor of science degree in commerce. While attending OU, he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau, a Greek social fraternity. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the Air Corps and was assigned to a Celestial Navigational training unit.

He was a 30-year member of Rotary, serving as president in 1950. He headed the Crippled Childrens Society of Logan for three years, was president of the Izaac Walton League in 1959, and was a member of Hocking County Fish and Game Club.

In the late 1940s, Skip helped organize and was a charter member of the Professional Photographers of Ohio. In 1953, by invitation, he was elected to membership in the Ohio Society of Professional Photographers, a group limited to 50 members.

Skip was a member and former chairman of the Logan Metropolitan Housing Authority. He was pleased to say the authority operated within budget during his tenure. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Logan. He made the keynote speech for founding of the Logan Trade Club, now known as the Logan-Hocking Chamber of Commerce. As the result of a casual conversation between Skip and George C. Shaw, now deceased, the two made the initial move to form what is now the Citizens Bank of Logan. Skip served as director for several years.

Survivors include a daughter, Nicole Elizabeth Humphrey of Logan; two nieces, Cheryl Sinz of Billings, Mont., and Barbara Williams of Rockbridge; and a nephew, Bruce Humphrey of Newark.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Pauline A. Kimes Humphrey, in 1993; his brother, Herman W. Humphrey; and an infant sister, Nellie.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, 8 p.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, with the Rev. Paul L. Elhard officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6 p.m. until the time of service.

Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan.

Jean Dodd
Died: Sunday, July 27, 2003
Age: 79

NELSONVILLE - Jean Dodd, 79, of Williston, Fla., formerly of Nelsonville, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.

Born June 22, 1924, in Moxahala, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Benjamin and Rose Ramsey Bruce.

She is survived by sons William N. (Beth) Dodd Jr. of Nelsonville, Daniel Lee Dodd of Buchtel, Jerry L. (Linda) Dodd of Columbus, Ga., John Thomas Dodd and James P. (Debbie) Dodd of Williston; daughters, Keta (Roger) Warren of Nelsonville and Karen (Jim) Stewart of Williston; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Tommy Joe (Rita) Bruce of Nelsonville; and a sister, Joyce James of Athens.

Besides her parents, shew as preceded in death by twin son and daughter, Linda and Larry Dodd; her husband, William Neal Dodd, who passed away in 1999; and brothers, Jack and Jim Bruce.

The homemaker was a member of Church of the Latter Day Saints, Williston.

Services will be held Wednesday 4 p.m., at Warren-Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Byron E. Oney
Died: Saturday, July 26, 2003
Age: 75

NELSONVILLE - Byron E. Oney, 75, of Nelsonville, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.

Born Aug. 26, 1927, in Harveys Lake, Pa., he was the son of the late Elwood Emmanuel and Bertha Eunice Crispell Oney. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Mae Curtiss Oney.

He attended the Church of the Nazarene and was a self-employed painter and country musician. He served honorably in the United States Army, with a tour in Panama.

Byron is survived by four daughters, Julie (Steven) Horn of Boulder, Colo., Gaye (Dam) Price of Burley, Idaho, Karla (Jim) Hess of Oregon and Judy (Bruce) Stumbo of Nelsonville; an honorary daughter, Amy Anders of Nelsonville; special grandsons Nick and Tommy Anders of Nelsonville; eight other grandchildren, Holly, Heidi, Haley and Heather Price, Kristen Stumbo, and Brad, Blair and Bree Hess; three brothers, George L. (Alvina) Oney of Hillsboro, N.J., Frederick T. Oney of Denver, Colo., and Andrew D. (Claudine) Oney of Pittston, Pa; and seven sisters, June (J.R.) Stephens of Carterville, Ga., Betty J. Strzelczyk of Harveys Lake, Mable (Anthony) Matovsky of Deal, N.J., Lois M. Newbold of Denver, Janet J. (Ted) Andrews of West Chester, Pa., Rebecca S. (Thomas) Widdick of Largo, Fla., and Eunice C. (Claude) Sorber of Noxen, Pa.

Besides his wife and parents, Byron was preceded in death by sisters Pauline Gamrot, Elsie Petrillo, Jean Macri and Ruth Harrison.

A memorial service will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at Swanson Funeral Home, Routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek, Pa., with the Rev. L.D. Reed officiating. Inurnment will be at Kocher Cemetery, Lake Twp.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday one hour prior to the service.

Born April 25, 1947, in Roane County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Ayward and Pansy Mae Jones. She is survived by a daughter, Debra Holmes, and a son, Douglas McCoy.

Mary Faye Howard
Died: Thursday, February 20, 2003
Age: 76

NELSONVILLE - Mary Faye Howard, 76, of Nelsonville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 28, 1926, in Circle Hill, daughter of the late Russell and Emma Faye Robinson Childress. She was married to Carl Howard of Nelsonville.

Mary was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 229, Democrat Club, Nelsonville Wesleyan Church and Nelsonville Parade of the Hills Committee, decorating windows on the town square.

Mary was also the person of the year for the Nelsonville Sesquicentennial. She was involved in the Nelsonville Crime Watch, was a Tri-County Community Action volunteer and a Paul Bunyan Show Queens Committee member. She was a very community-minded individual.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Cindy (Jack) Boyer of Wauseon, Charlotte (Rick) Holland of Lowell, Mich., and Candy Howard and Crystal Howard of Nelsonville; three grandchildren, Sarah Faye Boyer of Columbus, and Melissa Ann Boyer and Cassandra Alice Boyer of Wauseon; four brothers, C. Gilbert (Irene) Childress of Maryville, Tenn., Dennis “Denny” (Doris) Childress of Chauncey, Harold (Gladys) Childress of Northwood and James (Betty) Childress of Detroit; a sister, Hazel Post of Nelsonville; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by a son, C.J. Howard; her twin brother Harry Childress; and two sisters, Shirley Childress and Alice Childress.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Nelsonville Wesleyan Church with Rev. Mike Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Friends may call at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and one hour prior to the services at the church.
