Age: 59

LOGAN - William Wilbur Chambers, 59, of Logan, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in the emergency room of Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan.

Born Aug. 5, 1943, in Logan, he was the son of Mabel Luetta Bailey Chambers of Logan and the late Willis Wilbur Chambers.

Services will be today, 2 p.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in New Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Mark Steven LaFrinere
Died: Monday, August 04, 2003
Age: 51

ATHENS - Mark Steven LaFrinere, 51, passed away on Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Licking Memorial Hospital, Newark after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Born Aug. 16, 1951, in Athens, he was the son of Raymond and Julia LaFrinere. Steve was a very loving and caring person and was deeply loved by all who knew him. He attended Athens High School and graduated in 1969. He was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1969 to 1972. He served one year in Vietnam with his brother, Eddie, with the 101st Airbourne Division. Steve received the National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.

Steve was a self-employed construction worker in Athens and later in San Antonio, Texas, for many years. He then was part owner of Optimal Construction Co. based in Nashville, Tenn. Most recently, Steve built and was co-owner of the Mid-America Dialysis Clinic in Columbus - an achievement of which he was very proud.

Steve enjoyed the outdoors - participating in hunting, deep sea fishing and golfing, and traveling to the beach with his family. He was a lifetime member of Athens VFW Post 3477.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his son, Christopher of Newark; his daughter, Christina of Baltimore, Md.; sisters and brothers-in-law Cindy and Mark Weidner of Athens, and Renee and Danny Evener of Deltona, Fla.; a brother, Eddie, of San Antonio, Texas; his father-in-law, Bill Minshall; a sister-in-law and her husband, Gwen and Mike Baurer; nephews Brad Weidner of Athens, and Kyle Evener, Eric LaFrinere, Jordan and Jacob Evener, all of Deltona; nieces Tanya LaFrinere and Tessie Evener of Deltona; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Andrew and Mary Brozak; paternal grandparents, Raymond and Marguerite LaFrinere; twin infant daughters; a nephew, Josh Evener; his mother-in-law, Vera Minshall; an aunt and two uncles.

He will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends.

At the request of the deceased, his body was cremated. A memorial service is scheduled for Aug. 16, at 1:30 p.m., at Athens Memory Gardens. A family gathering will follow the service.

Albert Washington Thompson Sr.
Died: Monday, August 04, 2003
Age: 81

CHAUNCEY - Albert Washington Thompson Sr., 81, of Chauncey, passed away on Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at his daughter’s home in Chauncey.

Born May 4, 1922, in New Straitsville, he was the son of the late Albert and Emaline Eggleston Thompson. He was a farmer and an Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by three daughters, Katryn (John) Allen of Chauncey, and Karen Thompson and Norma Jean (David) Thomas, both of New Straitsville; sons Albert W. Thompson Jr. of Chauncey and Leonard Thompson of St. Petersburg, Va.; a special nephew, William “Billy” Bell; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy E. Bell Thompson; a daughter, Helen Householder; a grandson, Galen Smith; three infant sons, Robert James, James Robert and Michael Andrew; five sisters, Maude, Mary, Bessy, Lucille and Anna; and four brothers, Granville, Lee, John and Richard.

Services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at J.E. Humphrey Funeral Home, 118 W. Walnut St., Shawnee, with Pastor Steven Bently officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday any time after 2 p.m.

At Mr. Thompson’s request, his body will be cremated. Full military honors will be conducted at a later date.

Ruth Lillian McCombs
Died: Monday, August 04, 2003
Age: 84

NELSONVILLE - Ruth Lillian McCombs, 84, of Columbus, formerly of Nelsonville, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Lutheran Village Care Center, Columbus.

Born Dec. 11, 1918, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of the last Asbury and Mae Wood McCombs.

Services will be Friday, 11:30 a.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Thomas Marvin Rowland
Died: Monday, August 04, 2003
Age: 52

CIRCLEVILLE - Thomas Marvin Rowland, 52, of Circleville, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at his residence.

Born Oct. 4, 1950, in Pickaway County, he was the son of Marvin and Marvene Marshall Rowland. He was a 1969 graduate of Circleville High School and worked for General Electric for 34 years. He was involved in 4-H and sports, and loved horse trading.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Marvin and Frances Rowland of McArthur; his mother, Marvene Rowland of Circleville; his wife, Jody Leasure Rowland; sons Ryan and Travis Rowland of Circleville; a daughter, Kimberly Breeze of Darby; three grandsons; sisters Connie (Ron) Archer of Springboro, Debbie (Larry) Richards of Logan, Yvonne Boone Rowland Dillon of McArthur and Vickie (Randy) Fullen-Hamilton of Circleville; a half brother, Benjamin Rowland of McArthur; 14 nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday, 8 p.m., at Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m.

Wanda L. Whitesel
Died: Monday, August 04, 2003
Age: 66

ATHENS - Wanda L. Whitesel, 66, of Athens, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.

Born Oct. 8, 1936, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Mary West Gillett. Wanda was formerly employed at Ambassador Laundry, and was a cook for Chi Omega sorority in Athens.

She is survived by her husband, George Whitesel; 10 sisters, Norma (Craig) Downey of Oregon, Virginia Ruth of Florida, Barbara Nicholes of Colorado, Sharon (Terry) Wingo of Albany, Lucy Gratham of West Virginia, Bonnie (Virgil) Reeder of Amesville, Frances (John) Tate of Pomeroy, Sue (George) Otten of Marietta, Sandra (Jerry) Evener of Athens and June (Ray) Haning of Albany; and a brother, Ted (Randi) Gillette of Shade.

Graveside services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Athens Memory Gardens, with Pastor Carl Radcliff officiating.

Friends may call at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Mary Lee Rittgers

LOGAN - Mary Lee Rittgers, 78, of Logan, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Logan Health Care Center.

Born April 24, 1925, in Lawrence, Kan., she was the daughter of the late Leo and Helen Julia Nicholson Applegate.

Services will be Thursday, 10 a.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fairfield County.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Michael Dale Stanley
Died: Sunday, August 03, 2003
Age: 50

NEW MARSHFIELD - Michael Dale Stanley, 50, of New Marshfield, passed away Sunday afternoon in the emergency room of O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 20, 1953, in Athens, he was the son of Julia Larch Stanley of Albany and the late Dale M. Stanley. He was a 1971 graduate of Alexander High School and attended Ohio University, was a U.S. Air Force veteran, and was employed as an instrument technician by the city of Athens.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Pamela Carsey Stanley; a daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Robert Horton; a son, Todd Stanley; a granddaughter, Taylor Horton; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Bettsy Stanley; and a sister and brother-in-law, Karen Sue and Arthur Smith.

Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with the Rev. Phillip Foster officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Charles W. Addis
Died: Monday, July 28, 2003
Age: 68

CLINTON - Charles W. Addis, 68, of Clinton, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at Hospice Care Center.

Born in Mineral, he was the son of the late Edith and Everett Addis. He is survived by his wife, Barb; sons, Craig Dana and Bryan Addis; and a daughter, Cindy Emerick.

Services were Thursday in Barberton.

Dale E. Shultz
Died: Sunday, August 03, 2003
Age: 76

THE PLAINS - Dale E. Shultz, 76, of The Plains, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.

Born Jan. 16, 1927, in Logan, he was the son of the late Harold and Cora Hutchins Shultz. Dale was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a former employee of GE in Logan, Logan Federal Savings and Loan, Athens County Savings and Loan, Cambridge Savings and Loan, Columbus Auto Parts Credit Union and Hocking Valley Credit Union, where he retired as president.

He was a member of The Plains United Methodist Church, Mingo Masonic Lodge 171, the Athens Chapter, Athens Council and Athens Commandery for 31 years, and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Shultz; two sons, Roger (Donna) of Bound Brook, N.J., and Randy Shultz of The Plains; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nathan Shultz; and a sister, Mariam Shriner of Logan.

Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at The Plains United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan, where military services will be conducted.

Friends may call at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, today from 5 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to services.
