Mary Ragan
Died: Wednesday, January 30, 2002

WELLSTON -- Mary E. Ragan, 61, a former resident of Wellston, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Holzer Medical Center in Jackson.

Born Aug. 31, 1940, in Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late George and Anna DeBoard Kinder.

She is survived by a daughter, Pam Lindamond.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Ragan; and a daughter, Connie Ragan.

Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, South Central Area 20, 138 Marietta Road, Suite D, Chillicothe, 45601; or to a charity of choice.

Robert Crawford
Died: Tuesday, January 29, 2002

ATHENS -- Robert Paul Crawford, 59, of Kansas City, Mo., died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, in Kansas City.

Born Feb. 24, 1942, in Shreve, Ohio, he was the son of the late Paul and Marjorie Aylsworth Crawford. He was a graduate of Shreve High School, a sales manager for Tucker-Rocky Motorcycle Co. and former owner of Athens Sports Cycles.

He is survived by his wife, Kay Blauser Crawford; daughters Kimberly Ann (Park) Plank of St. Louis, Mo., and Jill (Phil) Perkins of Holland, Mich.; a son, Chris Crawford of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren Sam and Casey Plant of St. Louis, Caroline and Abby Perkins of Holland; a sister, Ellen (Gar) Compton of Massillon; a brother, Mark (Shirley) Crawford of Prospect; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Athens Church of Christ, with Pastor Willard Love officiating. Private burial will be held at a later time.

Friends may call at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church on Saturday one hour prior to services.

Virginia Scott
Died: Tuesday, January 29, 2002

GLOUSTER -- Virginia A. Scott, 89, of Glouster, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, in Logan.

Born April 19, 1912, in New Marshfield, she was the daughter of the late John Francis and Anna Hamilton Shannon.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Earl Scott.

Services will be held Friday, 10 a.m., at Brown Funeral Home in Murray City. Burial will be in South Canaanville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Lucille Smith
Died: Friday, September 7, 2001

HAYDENVILLE -- Lucille Edith Smith, 85, of Haydenville, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.

Born Nov. 18, 1915, in Delaware, she was the daughter of the late Rolla and Carrie Scully Barnett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Smith.

Services will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Kenneth Freeman
Died: Thursday, September 6, 2001

LOGAN -- Kenneth Ray Freeman, 70, of Logan, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.

Born Sept. 27, 1930, in Hocking County, he was the son of the late John and Goldie Pearl Freeman. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Mohler Freeman.

Services will be Sunday, 2 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Robert Herdman
Died: Thursday, September 6, 2001

GALLIPOLIS -- Robert D. Herdman, 63, of Gallipolis, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 17, 1937, in Athens County, son of the late James Herdman and Florence Persinger Herdman Wise.

He was an Air Force veteran, graduated from Buchtel High School in 1955 and attended Ohio University. He was retired and had worked at Johnson's Supermarket and at Womelldorf and Thomas Hardware, all in Gallipolis. He enjoyed the theater and was an avid history buff.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Calton Herdman of Gallipolis; a son, Robert D. Herdman II of Gallipolis; a daugher, Lynne (Mark) Griffin of Thurman; two grandchildren, Jessica and Alex Herdman of Gallipolis; three brothers, Jim Herdman of Columbus, Joe (Kay) Herdman of Mechanicsburg and Dick (Rona) Herdman of Reston, Va.; and two sisters, Joyce (Jerry) Juniper in Columbus and Joan (Paul Eddie) Newman of Logan.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Herbert Wise.

Funeral services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Ernie Perkins officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday one hour prior to services.

Leroy Holzer
Died: Thursday, September 6, 2001

LODI -- Leroy Glen Holzer, 79, of Wooster, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital, Evansville, Ind.

He was born in Wingeyille Twp., Wis. on June 26, 1922, the son of the late Charles Alexander and Nellie Belle Walker Holzer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Louise Bartholomai Holzer, and is survived by daughters Connie Rae Romine of Athens and Joyce Ann Burghard.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Lodi United Methodist Church.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Parker Funeral Home, Lodi, and Monday at 10 a.m. at the church.

Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, or the Lodi United Methodist Church.

James Whalen
Died: Thursday, September 6, 2001

ATHENS -- A memorial service will be held Oct. 12 for James J. Whalen, president emeritus of Ithaca College. Whalen, who led the college during a period of unprecedented growth, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, in Boston, after a brief illness. The memorial Mass will be held at 3 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca, with Fr. John DeSocio officiating. A campus reception will follow at the James J. Whalen Center for Music.

He is survived by his wife, Gillian Hamer Whalen; brothers Robert, Frank and Jerome; a sister, Mary Noel; and their families.

During Whalen's presidency, from 1975 to 1997, the college experienced increases in academic and co-curricular programs, in the size and caliber of the faculty, in the number and quality of the students, and in physical and fiscal resources. Upon his retirement, he was named president emeritus and was awarded the honorary degree of doctor of humane letters.

Born March 6, 1927, in Pottsville, Pa., he was a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College. He held masters and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from Pennsylvania State University and was a licensed clinical psychologist. Before coming to Ithaca College, he served as president of Newton College of the Sacred Heart, and held a variety of administrative positions at Ohio University and the University of Maryland.

In a 1986 Exxon Foundation study, he was named one of the nation's top 100 higher education chief executive officers. In 1997, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities gave him the Henry Paley Memorial Award for outstanding service. He also was awarded honorary doctor of law degrees from both Newton College and Ohio University. In 1999, the Ithaca College Alumni Association named in his honor the James J. Whalen Meritorious Service Award, which recognizes distinguished achievements and contributions to the college by non-graduates. The new home of the college's founding school, the School of Music, was dedicated as the James J. Whalen Center for Music in October 1999.

He had served as chairman of the boards of directors of the American Council on Education, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and New York's Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities. A champion of integrity in intercollegiate athletics, he was a charter member of the Presidents Commission of the NCAA and chairman of its Division III subcommission, co-chair of the NCAA Task Force on Gender Equity, and a member of the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.

For his contributions to higher education in the military, he received the Exceptional Service Award, the highest civilian honor given by the U.S. Air Force, and was named an honorary member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He had served as chairman of the boards of visitors of both Air University and the Army War College, and he was a member of the board of visitors of the Marine Corps University. He was technical adviser to the Process for Accreditation of Joint Education of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as educational consultant for the chairman of that endeavor.

He had most recently served on the board of advisers for the National Student Records Clearinghouse and as a member of the ACE fellows program.

Contributions in his name can be made to support the Turtle Bridge Scholarship, which was established by James and Gillian Whalen to honor academically outstanding seniors who are actively involved in the campus and/or local communities. Lee Herron
Died: Wednesday, September 5, 2001

McARTHUR -- Lee O. Herron, 88, of McArthur, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Adena Regional Medical Center, Chillicothe.

Born March 9, 1913, in Richland Twp., Vinton County, he was the son of the late Arch and Eva Brown Herron.

He was a retired Vinton County school bus driver and carpenter. He was a member of FOE Aerie 2279 and a World War II Navy veteran.

He is survived by sons Gary (Terri) Herron of Artesia, Calif., Ronald Herron of Pico Rivera, Calif., and Richard (Shirley) Herron of Lancaster; brothers Randall (Gladys) Herron of North Royalton and William (Ann) Herron of McArthur; sisters Shirley Allman of Clarksburg and Virginia (Gerald) Byers of Londonderry; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne, and a sister, Frances Herron.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with the Rev. James Barnett officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, with military graveside services by Vinton County VFW Post 5299.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.
