Age: 70

LOGAN - Betty Jane Esters, 70, Logan, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, in the skilled nursing unit at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.

Born Jan. 26, 1933, in Union Furnace, she was the daughter of the late Carl William-Cecil and Geneva Alberta Stover Schultz.

She is survived by two sons, Jesse Earl Esters and Jonathan Earl Esters, and was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Earl Esters Sr.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Shaw Cemetery, Falls Twp.

Friends may call at the funeral home today and Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Emerson Houdashelt
Died: Thursday, July 03, 2003
Age: 72

POMEROY - Emerson Houdashelt, 72, of Pomeroy, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center in Pomeroy.

Morn March 31, 1931, he was the son of the late Walter Houdashelt and Gladys Conant Houdashelt Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Dailey Houdashelt, and children Becky Johnston and Randy Eugene Houdashelt.

Funeral services will be held at Ewing Funeral Home in Pomeroy on Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Meigs Memory Gardens.

Calling hours at the funeral home are today from 2 to 4 p.m., and 7 to 9 p.m.

Melvin M. Hook
Died: Thursday, July 03, 2003
Age: 69

McCONNELSVILLE - Melvin M. Hook, 69, of Big Botton Lane, Stockport, went home to be with the Lord early Thursday morning, July 3, 2003, at Genesis Morrison House Hospice in Zanesville.

Born Aug. 13, 1933, in Kimberly, he was the son of the late the Rev. Charles and Mae Sommers Hook. He was a retired maintenance worker for American Electric Power, where he worked for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Stockport United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Logan Moose Lodge and Webb Lodge 252 F&AM of Stockport.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Beth Goss Hook; three daughters, Teresa (John) Kalb of McConnelsville, Lori Beth (Bill) Campbell of Malta and Angie (Nat) Sherer of Ocala, Fla.; a son, Rick (Allyson) Hook of Malta; 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and two sisters, Evelyn Simonton of Lancaster and Garnet Sanborn of Clarksdale, Ariz.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rachel Parrish and Virgie Stutes, and a brother, Charles Hook Jr.

Services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at Stockport United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dan Evory officiating. Burial will be in Stockport Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Morgan County Veterans roup..

Friends may call at Miller-Huck Funeral Home, McConnelsville, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. Masonic services will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 8:30 p.m.

Floyd N. Hiles
Died: Thursday, July 03, 2003
Age: 90

LOGAN - Floyd N. Hiles, 90, of Logan, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, in Logan.

Born Feb. 21, 1913, in Logan, he was the son of the late John V. and Margaret K. Moser Hiles. He is survived by his wife, Marcella “Sally” Hiles; sons Gary and Jeffrey Hiles; and a daughter, Jennifer Gompf.

Services will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home. Logan. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, with military rites by the Combined Veterans of Hocking County.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Fonda Teufel Fry
Died: Tuesday, July 01, 2003
Age: 73

ATHENS - Fonda Teufel Fry, 73, of Wildwood, Fla., died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, of complications from a long battle with emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

She is survived by her husband, Z. Brent Fry; her sister, Julie Murphy, and husband, Walter, of Wildwood, Fla., and Hendersonville, N.C.; a sister, Charla Teufel of Freiburg, Germany; a brother-in-law, Bob Haldeman of Canton; three children, Christie Evans of Redmond, Wash., Judy Gendreau of Poway, Calif., and Karl Fry of Naples, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Fonda was born in Staunton, Va., and met her husband while working at the Pentagon in 1949. They recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary with all three children. Twenty-two of those years were spent in Athens. Fonda earned a bachelor of arts degree at Morehead State University in English and biology and a masters degree in linguistics at Ohio University, where she then taught English to foreign students for 19 years, before retiring to Wildwood in 1989.

A celebration of life was held on July 5 at Beyers Chapel, Leesburg, Fla. Fonda’s ashes will be buried at West Union Street Cemetery in Athens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.

Pearl Louise Summer
Died: Wednesday, July 02, 2003
Age: 67

LOGAN - Pearl “Peggy” Louise Summers, 67, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at her home in Columbus.

She was born Oct. 6, 1935, in Logan, the daughter of the late George and Florence Jones Summers.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan. Arrangements are by Cardaras Funeral Homes, Logan.

Douglas O. Cornog
Died: Tuesday, July 01, 2003
Age: 44

McARTHUR - Douglas O. Cornog, 44, of McArthur, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, in Columbus.

Born Dec. 19, 1958, in Lansing, Mich., he was the son of Dr. Ann B. Pratt of McArthur and the late Dr. Geoffrey Y. Cornog. He was an aerospace engineer and worked for 20 years at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He was a member of McArthur Freewill Baptist Church, was a 1977 graduate of Westerville High school and a graduate of Ohio State University, was an Air Force veteran and a member of American Legion Post 105 in Vandalia.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Pelfrey Cornog; children Sheri L. Amburgey of McArthur, and Tiffaney S., Rachel A. and Mitchel R. Reffett, all of McArthur; grandchildren Schylar Phouthanong and Ian Reffett, both of McArthur; his stepmother, Faye Cornog of Springfield, Ill.; his mother-in-law, Willena Pelfrey (Norman Peyton) of Middletown; his father-in-law, Donald (Sandy) Pelfrey of McArthur; his best friend, Phillip Priest and kids, of Columbus; stepsisters Cynthia and June of Juneau, Alaska; sisters-in-law Donna (Donald) Brashears of South Charleston, June (Jeffrey) of Herstein of London and Debbie (Kenny) Bledsoe of Ray; and brothers-in-law Shane and Bronson Berryman of McArthur.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clay Ian Cornog, and his stepfather, Richard F. Pratt.

Services will be held Sunday, 1 p.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with the Rev. James Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Pelfrey Family Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by Vinton County VFW Post 5299.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Evelyn Francis Cooper
Died: Tuesday, July 01, 2003
Age: 90

ATHENS - Evelyn Francis Cooper, 90, of Athens, died late Tuesday afternoon, July 1, 2003, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.

Born June 7, 1913, in New Marshfield, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Rena Pidcock Carter. She was a graduate of Akron High School.

She is survived by a grandson, Mark (Sarah) Story of Athens; great-grandchildren Brandy and Tracy Story of Athens; and a son-in-law, William “Bill” Story of New Marshfield.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luster, in 1991; a daughter, Gloria Story, in 1990; and a brother, Alfred (Lonnie) Carter.

Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, conducted by Pastor David Cogar. Burial will be in New Marshfield Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday two hours prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Adrian E. Morgan
Died: Tuesday, July 01, 2003
Age: 67

WELLSTON - Adrian E. Morgan, 67, of Thurman, passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at his home, after a short battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 2, 1935, he was the son of the late Lewis and Ruth Baxter. He retired from Applied Distribution of Columbus after 26 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Louise Tackett Morgan; sons David (Debbie) of Jackson, Jim (Jonette) of Wellston, Dwayne (Melody) of Wellston, and Mike and his fiancee Sherry Lewis of Jackson; daughters Kathy (Chuck) King of Wellston and Carol (Paul) Arthur of Jackson; 14 grandchildren, Darrin, Jeremy, Suzanna, Misty, Jesse, Nicholas, Dylon, Haley, Mikey, Justin, Christy, Jenny, Jody and Josh; two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Nathan; two brothers, Casey (Tootsie) and Milt (Dowlene) of Thurman; two sisters, Jean (Jerry) Ward of Frankfort and Helen (Leo) Cantrell of Wakeman; brothers-in-law Ray (Libby) Tackett, Moody (Virgie) Tackett and Harold (Sandy) Tackett; and sisters-in-law Nora (Jim) Derxson, Judy (Bob) Calder and Shirley (Kenny) Sharp. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Morgan was predeceased by brothers Duane, John, Lew, Bob, Bud and Wendall; his mother- and father-in-law, Kermit and Draxie Tackett; a brother-in-law, Wendal Tackett; and a grandson, Keith Denney, in 1999.

Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, 120 W. Broadway, Wellston, with the Rev. James Mullett officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today and Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Pall bearers will be J.R. Morgan, Kermit Tackett, Johnny Morgan, Leo Cantrell, Don Morgan and Sonny Ashton.

Thomas Grant Plummer
Died: Tuesday, July 01, 2003
Age: 46

WELLSTON - Thomas Grant Plummer, 46, of Wellston, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at his residence.

Born April 3, 1957, in Chillicothe, he was the son of James A. Plummer of Wellston and the late Martha Willis Plummer.

There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Mr. Plummer’s body will be cremated.

Contributions may be made to the Jackson County Fair harness races, in care of speed racing superintendent, P.O. Box 88, Jackson 45640.

Arrangements are under the direction of McWilliams Funeral Home, Wellston.
