Donald Lee Alkire
Died: Tuesday, October 07, 2003
Age: 67

STEWART - Donald Lee Alkire, 67, of Stewart, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at his residence.

Born Dec. 14, 1936, in Parkersburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late J. Russell and Verna Kathryn Wiggens Alkire. He was an Army veteran and worked for Electric Motor Service in Athens until he retired on March 29, 2002. He was a member of Centennial Congregational Church and attended other churches.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Alkire; a daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Todd Bradford of Guysville; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Sharon Alkire of Stewart; and four grandchildren, Brannon Lee and Justin Allen Alkire of Stewart and Evan Crary and Mikayla Lynn Bradford of Guysville. He loved them all. He was from a family of 11, with four surviving brothers, Roy, Carl, John and Terry; and four sisters, Betty Coen, Peggy Clark, Janet Owens and Kathryn Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert; and a sister, Marie Taylor.

Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville, with Roger McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Coolville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Athens County Hospice.

Robert L. Carter
Died: Tuesday, October 07, 2003
Age: 78

NELSONVILLE - Robert L. Carter, 78, of South Zanesville, died early Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at his residence after a long illness.

Born July 13, 1925, in Nelsonville, he was the son of the late Edward R. and Edna B. Hartman Carter. He graduated from Nelsonville High School in 1943. Mr. Carter served in the Army Air Corps from November 1943 until November 1945, where he served as a mechanic on P-38 fighter bombers in Italy. He was a corporal when discharged.

He graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor of science degree in business administration and received his certified public accountant certificate in 1960. From 1951 to 1980, he was district director of the Internal Revenue Service in Zanesville. In 1981, he joined the CPA firm of Norman, Jones, Enlow and Co. in Zanesville, where he worked until 1992.

Mr. Carter was a member of Lafayette Lodge 79 F&AM, where he served as secretary from 1973 to 2003; Zanesville Chapter 9, where he was past high priest; Zanesville Council 12, past illustrious master; Cyrene Commandry 10 and Knights of the York Cross of Honour. He also was a member of South Zanesville United Methodist Church and was past commander of the Nelsonville American Legion Post.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Jo Daines Carter, whom he married on May 3, 1952; three children, Dennis L. (Linda) Carter of Xenia, Debra Jo (Larry) Burton of New Philadelphia and David (Rhonda) Carter of Zanesville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three sisters, June Watkins and Joan (Bill) Cox of Nelsonville, and Maxine (Elza) Sapp of Hamilton; a brother, Bernard (Roberta) Carter of Nelsonville; and a sister-in-law, Ramona Carter of Walkersville, Md.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Irene Carter, and a brother, William Carter.

Services will be held Friday, 10:30 a.m., at William Thompson and Son Chapel, 5765 Gladstone Drive, White Cottage, with the Revs. Joy French and Orlo Freshly officiating. Burial will be in Connett Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Richard E. Lusher Sr.
Died: Monday, October 06, 2003
Age: 59

SALEM CENTER - Richard E. Lusher Sr., 59, of Salem Center, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.

Born Oct. 18, 1943, in Huntington, W.Va., he was the son of Evelyn M. Lusher of Salem Center and Roy L. Lusher. He is survived by a son, Richard E. Lusher Jr.

Services will be Friday, 11 a.m., at Fisher Funeral Home, Pomeroy. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point.

Michael Allen Moody
Died: Monday, October 06, 2003
Age: 22

HOLLISTER - Michael Allen Moody, 22, of Hollister, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, in an auto accident in Ripley, W.Va.

Born Aug. 30, 1981, in Athens, he was the son of Terry G. Moody Sr. of Hollister and Debra K. Hook of Athens. He attended Glouster Mission, loved the outdoors and nature, and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Besides his parents, he is survived by brothers Terry G. (Katrina) Moody Jr. of Hollister and Bradley G. Moody of Trimble; sisters Thelma Faye (Langston) Harvey of Gallipolis and Melissa Jane Moody of New Marshfield; grandparents Carl H. and Thelma Moody of Hollister; great-grandmother Dorothy Hamilton of Athens; several aunts, uncles and cousins; three nieces, Emma, Anna and Gloria; a nephew, Carl Moody; and special friends Nathan Robinette and Earl Gilkey.

He was preceded in death by grandparents James Hook and Ethel Faye Hook.

Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Brown Funeral Home, Murray City, with the Rev. James Brown officiating. Burial will be in Hollister Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Homer Dwight Newman
Died: Monday, October 06, 2003
Age: 91

LOGAN - Homer Dwight Newman, 91, of Arcadia, Fla., formerly of Logan, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Charlotte Harbor Nursing Home, Port Charlotte, Fla., after an extended illness.

Born April 20, 1912, in New Lexington, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Anna Belle Ricketts Newman. Mr. Newman was a retired carpenter and formerly worked for Carpentry Local unions in Newark and Columbus, as well as Bradenton and Sarasota, Fla. Mr. Newman was a member of Hocking Hills Church of Christ.

He is survived by a son, Joe (Linda) Newman of Arcadia; two sisters, Ida Crowe of Logan and Eleanor Bird of New Straitsville; three grandsons, Joseph D. Newman Jr. of Venice, Fla., John R. (Tammy) Newman of Arcadia and Josh A. (Amy) Newman of Tampa, Fla.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Mr. Newman was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Moulton Newman, in 1992; two brothers, John Newman and Harold Newman; and two sisters, Bertha Rea and Helen Hodgson.

Services will be held Friday, 10 a.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, with Pastor Paul Stebelton officiating. Entombment will be in the J.E. Newman Family Mausoleum, Good-Hope Twp., Hocking County.

Emmett Douglas
Died: Monday, October 06, 2003
Age: 83

ALBANY - Emmett Douglas, 83, of Albany, passed away at Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus early Monday, Oct. 6, 2003.

He was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Scipio Twp., Meigs County, son of the late George F. and Sylvia Mae Douglas. He was a retired farmer and sheep shearer. He was a former Republican Central Committeeman for Scipio Twp., a former Scipio/Harrisonville School Board member and a former Scipio Twp. Trustee.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Helen Marie and Ronnie Dale Scott of Albany; granddaughters Debbie (Jeff) Arnold of Albany, Dalene (David) Stafford of Bremen and Denise (Steven) McCauley of Bedford; great-grandchildren Rebecca Arnold of Bedford, Christina Arnold of Albany, and Timothy Sedlock, Trisha Sedlock and Lexi Stafford, all of Bremen; a sister, Martha M. Hodge of Thurston; two nieces, Judy Long and Jan Hodge; four nephews, David (Marilyn) Hodge, and George, Darrell and John Douglas; a great-nephew and great-niece, John and Jenny Long; and a cousin, Flora Mae Osborne.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Frances; infant twin brothers, Edward and Edwin Douglas; and a brother-in-law, Vinton D. Hodge.

At Mr. Douglas’ request, a private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Billy O’Brien officiating. Burial will be in Wells Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Ralph J. Sanders
Died: Sunday, October 05, 2003
Age: 80

MILLFIELD - Ralph J. Sanders, 80, of Millfield, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at his residence.

Born May 10, 1923, in Morgan County, he was the son of the late Fred and Mabel McPeak Sanders. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lavern Camel Sanders of Millfield.

He was a 1941 graduate of Ames-Bern High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army, who served in Europe during World War II with the 773rd Field Artillery and received the European Theater Ribbon with five Bronze Stars. He retired from Abex Corp. after 33 years of service. He was a member of Millfield Christian Church and American Legion Post 21, and was a life member of VFW Post 3477 of Athens.

He is survived by three sons, James (Judy) Sanders of Philo, Rodney Sanders of Blue Rock and Brent (Debbie) Sanders of Lancaster; a daughter, Rebecca (Glenn) Browning of Lewisburg; four brothers, Chester Sanders of Malta, Harold “Bill” Sanders of Glouster, Dow Sanders and Richard Sanders of Trimble; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Sanders.

Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster, with Pastor Mike Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens, where military services will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Thursday one hour prior to the services.

Georgia A. Wallace
Died: Sunday, October 05, 2003
Age: 89

McARTHUR - Georgia A. Wallace, 89, of Londonderry, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Adena Regional Medical Center, Chillicothe.

Born Oct. 21, 1913, in Marietta, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Ida Jewell Hursey. She is survived by sons Abram Estel Jr. and Kenneth Wallace, and a daughter, Barbara Coffey.

Services will be Wednesday, 2:30 p.m., at Walnut Hills Cemetery, Columbus.

Friends may call at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Contributions may be made to Corinth Church.

Esta Allen
Died: Friday, October 03, 2003
Age: 89

THE PLAINS - Esta Allen, 89, of The Plains, passed away Oct. 3, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.

Born Jan. 20, 1914 in Zaleski, she was the daughter of the late Martin Luther and Estella May Sisson Kimmey. She was an Athens High School graduate and a lifetime resident of Athens. Esta was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Ronald Dean and Charlotte Coury Long, of Oceanside, Calif., and David Arthur and Sandra Knowlton Allen of Albany; a sister, Freda Ann Kimmey Perry of Athens; grandchildren Charles, Steve, Michael and Michelle Long, Pamela Long (David) White and Angela Beth Allen; a step-granddaughter, Paula Trout Six; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and nieces Patty (Ernie) Kittel and Georgeanne (Kenny) Thomas.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands Dean Herman Long and Walter Arthur Allen, brother Charles William Kimmey, granddaughter Teresa Long and grandson Jon-David Martin Allen.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with Chaplain Paul VanHorn officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be Tuesday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
