Theresa A. McMullen
Died: Thursday, December 26, 2002
Age: 50

MURRAY CITY -- Theresa A. McMullen, 50, of Murray City, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Doctors Hospital West, Columbus.

Born June 1, 1952, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of Rita Smith Hanna of Murray City. A licensed practical nurse, she was a former employee of Athens Mental Health Center. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church of Glouster, a 1970 graduate of Nelsonville-York High School and attended Ohio University and Hocking Technical College.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Robert B. McMullen; and brothers James Eugene (Gale) Hanna of Mt. Sterling and William (Mary Jean) Hanna of Guysville.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Edward and Mary Smith, in whose home she was raised.

Memorial services will be held Monday, 10:30 a.m., at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Glouster, with the Rev. Fr. John Mucha officiating. Mrs. McMullen's cremains will be interred in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Murray City.

Betty J. Morgan Allen
Died: Thursday, December 26, 2002
Age: 78

HAMDEN -- Betty J. Morgan Allen, 78, of Hamden, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.

Born Nov. 30, 1924, in McArthur, she was the daughter of the late Russell D. and Gladys I. Ward Morgan. She did outreach work for the elderly in Vinton County for 17 years, operated Allen's Restaurant for several years and was a 1942 graduate of McArthur High School.

She is survived by a daughter, Brenda (Earl) Slavens of Hamden; grandsons, Earl Vint Slavens II of Hamden and Dustin Slavens of Newark; a sister, Carolyn (Carl) Sorrell of Hamden; special friends, Larry and Paula Lamb of Dundas, Michelle Dutcher and Gary Miller of Hamden.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur E. Allen, on Jan. 22, 1991; a son, Jeff Allen; and a brother, Robert Morgan.

Services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at Garrett Funeral Home in McArthur, with the Revs. Roger and Marilyn Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today, from 4 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to McArthur United Methodist Church, c/o Garrett Funeral Home.

Wilma M. Pierce
Died: Thursday, December 26, 2002
Age: 80

COOLVILLE -- Wilma M. Pierce, 80, of Coolville, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Arcadia Nursing Home of Coolville.

She was born May 3, 1922, in Slate, W.Va., daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Keller Sims. She was a member of Torch Baptist Church for the last 20 years and enjoyed sewing, crocheting and cooking.

She is survived by three daughters, Doris Welch and her husband Richard of Cutler, Janice Pierce of Coolville and Wanda Welch and her husband George of Coolville; one son, Gary Pierce and his wife, Dawn, of Duncan Falls; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mable Coleman of Bremen and Mary Sams of Wadesville; and two brothers, Charles Sims of Williamstown and Chester Sims of Marietta.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Thomas Pierce, in 1976; two sisters, Tessie McDonald and Ruth Roach; and one brother, Carl Sims.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Tatman Funeral Home, Belpre. Burial will be at Torch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday prior to the service.

Ariana R. Ulloa
Died: Thursday, December 26, 2002
Age: 61

ATHENS -- Ariana R. Ulloa, 61, of Athens, died unexpectedly late Thursday evening, Dec. 26, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, on July 10, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Alejandro Olavarrieta and Maria Luz Posadas. A graduate of high school in Tampico, Mexico, she received her bachelor of science in chemical engineering from the National University of Mexico in Mexico City. Ariana moved to Athens with her family in 1986 and quickly endeared herself to the church and the community. In 1990, she was hired by Hocking College's Department of International Programs, where she eventually became director.

Beloved wife of Sergio Ulloa; loving mother of Ariana Desiree, Cintia, Sergio and Tania; sister of Marcela Castillo and aunt of Paola Zamora, she is also survived and mourned by the thousands of current and former international students who loved her as a mother and friend.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund for International Students, which is to be administered through Christ the King Catholic Church in Athens.

Calling hours at Christ the King University Parish are today from 6 to 8 p.m. A vigil for the deceased will be held at 7:30 p.m.

The memorial mass will be on Monday at 11 a.m. at Christ the King.

Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home.

Douglas R. Lease
Died: Wednesday, December 25, 2002
Age: 48

GALLIPOLIS -- Douglas R. Lease, 48, of Waxhaw, N.C., formerly of Gallipolis, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Matthews Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, N.C.

Born Feb. 28, 1954, in Charleston, W.Va., he was the son of the late Richard S. and Agnes N. Graham Lease. He is survived by his wife, Julie Gibbs Lease, and children Carolyn Marie and Robert Scot Lease.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at Cremeens Funeral Home, Gallipolis. Calling hours are from noon to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elsie Lou Rowles Bobo
Died: Monday, December 30, 2002
Age: 78

ATHENS -- Elsie Lou Rowles Bobo, 78, of Lenoir City, Tenn., passed away on Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at her home.

She was a member of Lenoir City Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Athens Chapter Order of Eastern Star.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Jesse Hostetter Rowles; a sister, Jesse Marie Tom; and a son, Michael Howard Bobo.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Howard Bobo; daughters Cinda Beeler and husband, Paul, of Lenoir City, Judith McPherson and husband, Randy, of Kingston, Tenn., and Barbara Badger of Maryville, Tenn.; grandchildren Hilary and Jared McPherson, and Kristen and Michael Badger; a sister, Ann Ruth of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, 7 p.m., at Click Funeral Home, Lenoir City, with the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. until the time of service.

The family would like to thank Tawanna Akins, Patty Davis of Adventa Hospice and all their staff, Dr. Antonio Ramos and his nurse, Karen, and all the staff at Tennessee Center of Internal Medicine for all of the compassionate care they have given during this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Adventa Hospice, 1420 Dutch Valley Road, Knoxville, Tenn. 37918, or a charity of choice.

Betty R. Legg Slattery
Died: Sunday, December 29, 2002
Age: 79

ATHENS -- Betty R. Legg Slattery, 79, of Athens, formerly of Columbus, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 29, 2002, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.

Born Oct. 19, 1923, in New Vienna, she was the daughter of the late John and Mabel Long Bedinghaus. She was a graduate of Zaleski High School, was employed by Ohio University in the treasurer's office and the purchasing and receiving departments, and was a former employee of the Department of Human Services in Columbus. Mrs. Slattery was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and Athens Emblem Club.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Ted Kalb of Newark; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. C. Alan and Jacqueline Legg of Athens; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Legg of Columbus, Matthew (Amy) Kalb of Dubuque, Iowa, Angela (Jim) Deygert of London, Ohio, and Tammi Woodburn of California; a great-grandchild, Elise Monet Deygert of London; and a sister, Mary Alice Rathburn of Zaleski.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Carl L. Legg, in 1968; her second husband, Donald Slattery, in 1982; and a sister, Margaret Tripp.

A memorial Mass will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Athens, by Msgr. Patrick Gaughan. Burial of ashes will be in Alexander Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours observed. Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Ohio Valley Affiliate, P.O. Box 182039, Dept. 013, Columbus 43218.

James Samuel Nibbio
Died: Sunday, December 29, 2002
Age: 95

LOGAN -- James Samuel Nibbio, 95, of Logan, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Logan Health Care Center

He was born June 20, 1907, in Sicily.

Funeral Mass will be Thursday, 10 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church, Logan, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

Joseph William Pullins
Died: Sunday, December 29, 2002
Age: 73

ALFRED -- Joseph William "Bill" Pullins, 73, of Alfred, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, W.Va.

Born Oct. 14, 1929, on Sumner Road in Meigs County, he was the son of the late Okey and Mattie Gillian Pullins. Bill was a farmer, logger, timber cutter and woodcrafter all his life. He was a member of Gospel Baptist Church and the Senior Saints Group in Torch.

He is survived by two daughters, Joann (Bob) Calaway of Chester and Patty (Dana) Aldridge of Reedsville; seven brothers, Theodore (Becky) Pullins of Long Bottom, James (Kay) Pullins, Robert (Janice) Pullins, Roger and Don Pullins, all of Coolville, Marvin (Rachel) Pullins of Bidwell, and Wilbur (Lisa) Pullins of Marietta; eight sisters, Inez Windland of Guysville, Bernice (Ray) Midkiff of Langsville, Mary Lou Fryar and Wilma (Marvin) Buckley of Coolville, Freda Carsey of Athens, Judy (Bill) Leach of Mineral Wells, W.Va., June (Jim) Ridenour of Chester, and Donna Sue (Leslie) Umensetter of Westerville; four grandchildren, Robbie and Jeromee Calaway of Chester, Anita (Tom) Morrissey of Virginia, and Janet Calaway of Reedsville; special mention, Judy Hart of Belpre, Jim Ashcraft of Guysville, Deanna (Chris) Reichdart of Vincent, Timba Ashcraft of Guysville, Arron Eldridge of Reedsville, and Samantha and Dalton Reichdart of Vincent; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Alma Jane Burke Pullins; his second wife, Faye Ashcraft Pullins; a brother, Cricket Pullins; and a sister, Lillie Randolph.

Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Gospel Baptist Church, Torch, with Pastor Jay Hubbard officiating. Interment will be in Meigs Memorial Gardens, Pomeroy.

Friends may call at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville, on Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m.
