Died: Tuesday, January 21, 2003
Age: 82

POMEROY -- Margaret Elizabeth Hysell, 82, of Pomeroy, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Pomeroy.

Born March 29, 1920, in Bradbury, she was the daughter of the late John and Sylvia Cox Spearhas. She is survived by sons James and John Hysell, and daughters Lena Napper and Bonnie Arnold. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Hysell.

Services will be Friday, 11 a.m., at Fisher Funeral Home, Pomeroy. Burial will be in Horner Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Samuel Lang
Died: Tuesday, January 21, 2003
Age: 78

CONGO -- Samuel "Peck" Lang, 78, of Congo, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Sunbridge Care, New Lexington.

Born Dec. 10, 1924, in New Straitsville, he was the son of the late Willard and Sarah Scurlock Lang. Mr. Lang was a self-employed truck driver and ran a cab service for the railroad. He worked for several coal mines and retired from Rockwell International in Newark.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Toth Lang; stepdaughters Charlotte (Dan) Hritz of Columbus and Linda (Arden) Nichols of Corning; sons Gary (Mary Jo) Lang of New Lexington and James (Jane) Lang of Corning; daughters Marjorie Lang of Athens, Lisa (Ernest) Eing Corning and Shiela White of Congo; 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Leona Mae Volk.

Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at J.E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Shawnee, with Pastor Brian Dutiel officiating. Interment will be in Millertown Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today anytime after 2 p.m., and Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.

Mary E.M. Gibbs
Died: Monday, January 20, 2003
Age: 86

COLUMBUS -- Mary E.M. Gibbs, 86, passed peacefully Monday, Jan. 20, 2003.

Born in Athens on April 16, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Edward R. and Mayme M. Carpenter Maxwell.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Georganne and William A. Porcelli; granddaughter Gena Marie Woodrow Horton; great-grandchildren Hannah, Karissa, Dakota and Leah; niece Nancy L. Maxwell; special friend Kim Powers; and many other dear friends.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, George I. Gibbs; grandson Paul Bernard Patterson; sister Helen L. Doolittle; brother William E. Maxwell; and brother-in-law Frank T. Gibbs.

Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Long Funeral Home, 5528 Cleveland Ave., Columbus, with Pastor Andrew Hoover presiding. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary Virgene Parsons
Died: Monday, January 20, 2003
Age: 93

STEWART -- Mary Virgene Parsons, 93, of Fort Myers, Fla., a long-time resident of Stewart, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, following a short illness.

Born Nov. 3, 1909, in Frost, she was the daughter of the late Richard E. and Minnie Brandeberry Linton. Mrs. Parsons lived most of her life in Rome Twp. before moving to Fort Myers in 1990. She retired from the Athens Mental Health Center, where she was employed as a psychiatric aide.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Garry and Juanita Parsons of Fort Myers; two grandchildren, Mrs. James (Jackie) Moore of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Samuel (Joan) Jones of Chapel Hill, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett H. Parsons; an infant son, Orland; five sisters, Lucille Caldwell Martin, Carrie Cunningham Beyler, Ceola Welch, Leida Frost and Wanda Hunter; and three brothers, Richard, Lenard and William "Bill" Linton.

Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville, with the Rev. Monty McCune officiating. Burial will be in Haga Cemetery, Stewart.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Following the interment on Saturday, the family will receive friends at South Canaan Baptist Church.

Elsie Lou Rowles Bobo
Died: Monday, December 30, 2002
Age: 78

ATHENS -- Elsie Lou Rowles Bobo, 78, of Lenoir City, Tenn., passed away on Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at her home.

She was a member of Lenoir City Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Athens Chapter Order of Eastern Star.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Jesse Hostetter Rowles; a sister, Jesse Marie Tom; and a son, Michael Howard Bobo.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Howard Bobo; daughters Cinda Beeler and husband, Paul, of Lenoir City, Judith McPherson and husband, Randy, of Kingston, Tenn., and Barbara Badger of Maryville, Tenn.; grandchildren Hilary and Jared McPherson, and Kristen and Michael Badger; a sister, Ann Ruth of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, 7 p.m., at Click Funeral Home, Lenoir City, with the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. until the time of service.

The family would like to thank Tawanna Akins, Patty Davis of Adventa Hospice and all their staff, Dr. Antonio Ramos and his nurse, Karen, and all the staff at Tennessee Center of Internal Medicine for all of the compassionate care they have given during this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Adventa Hospice, 1420 Dutch Valley Road, Knoxville, Tenn. 37918, or a charity of choice.

Betty R. Legg Slattery
Died: Sunday, December 29, 2002
Age: 79

ATHENS -- Betty R. Legg Slattery, 79, of Athens, formerly of Columbus, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 29, 2002, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.

Born Oct. 19, 1923, in New Vienna, she was the daughter of the late John and Mabel Long Bedinghaus. She was a graduate of Zaleski High School, was employed by Ohio University in the treasurer's office and the purchasing and receiving departments, and was a former employee of the Department of Human Services in Columbus. Mrs. Slattery was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and Athens Emblem Club.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Ted Kalb of Newark; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. C. Alan and Jacqueline Legg of Athens; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Legg of Columbus, Matthew (Amy) Kalb of Dubuque, Iowa, Angela (Jim) Deygert of London, Ohio, and Tammi Woodburn of California; a great-grandchild, Elise Monet Deygert of London; and a sister, Mary Alice Rathburn of Zaleski.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Carl L. Legg, in 1968; her second husband, Donald Slattery, in 1982; and a sister, Margaret Tripp.

A memorial Mass will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Athens, by Msgr. Patrick Gaughan. Burial of ashes will be in Alexander Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours observed. Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

James Samuel Nibbio
Died: Sunday, December 29, 2002
Age: 95

LOGAN -- James Samuel Nibbio, 95, of Logan, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Logan Health Care Center

He was born June 20, 1907, in Sicily.

Funeral Mass will be Thursday, 10 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church, Logan, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

Joseph William Pullins
Died: Sunday, December 29, 2002
Age: 73

ALFRED -- Joseph William "Bill" Pullins, 73, of Alfred, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, W.Va.

Born Oct. 14, 1929, on Sumner Road in Meigs County, he was the son of the late Okey and Mattie Gillian Pullins. Bill was a farmer, logger, timber cutter and woodcrafter all his life. He was a member of Gospel Baptist Church and the Senior Saints Group in Torch.

He is survived by two daughters, Joann (Bob) Calaway of Chester and Patty (Dana) Aldridge of Reedsville; seven brothers, Theodore (Becky) Pullins of Long Bottom, James (Kay) Pullins, Robert (Janice) Pullins, Roger and Don Pullins, all of Coolville, Marvin (Rachel) Pullins of Bidwell, and Wilbur (Lisa) Pullins of Marietta; eight sisters, Inez Windland of Guysville, Bernice (Ray) Midkiff of Langsville, Mary Lou Fryar and Wilma (Marvin) Buckley of Coolville, Freda Carsey of Athens, Judy (Bill) Leach of Mineral Wells, W.Va., June (Jim) Ridenour of Chester, and Donna Sue (Leslie) Umensetter of Westerville; four grandchildren, Robbie and Jeromee Calaway of Chester, Anita (Tom) Morrissey of Virginia, and Janet Calaway of Reedsville; special mention, Judy Hart of Belpre, Jim Ashcraft of Guysville, Deanna (Chris) Reichdart of Vincent, Timba Ashcraft of Guysville, Arron Eldridge of Reedsville, and Samantha and Dalton Reichdart of Vincent; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Alma Jane Burke Pullins; his second wife, Faye Ashcraft Pullins; a brother, Cricket Pullins; and a sister, Lillie Randolph.

Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Gospel Baptist Church, Torch, with Pastor Jay Hubbard officiating. Interment will be in Meigs Memorial Gardens, Pomeroy.

Friends may call at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville, on Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m.

Boyd T. Spurlock
Died: Sunday, December 29, 2002
Age: 78

TUPPERS PLAINS -- Boyd T. "Pappy" Spurlock, 78, of Tuppers Plains, formerly of Hurricane, W.Va., died at his residence on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002.

Born Oct. 10, 1924, in Lincoln County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Alonzo and Georgia Alford Spurlock.

He is survived by a son, Boyd T. Jr.; two daughters, Elizabeth Spurlock and Patricia Kee; seven stepsons, Ronald, Daniel, David, Gary, Voyd Jr., Rodney and Don; and five stepdaughters, Barbara Bissell, Kay Lanham, Kathy Walker, Carol Dodge and Pam Boyd.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Harper Spurlock; and a stepson, C.L. Spurlock.

Services were today at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville. Burial was in Culloden Cemetery, Culloden, W.Va.
